The airport was named after Léopold Sédar Senghor, a well-known poet who served as president of Senegal from 1960 to 1980, and died in 2001.
In 2004, the airport served 1,394,351 passengers.
The airport is quite possibly the most important in this part of West Africa with frequent service to major centers in West Africa, Europe and, begining in late 2006, the US. During the golden age of commercial avaition, Dakar was the gateway to Africa for Pan Am and often used by European carriers as an enroute refuling stop on services to South America.
