Exploring Manitoba, 2008

Heading North across the city of Winnipeg, I passed over

Kings Park,

The University of Manitoba,

and the downtown area.

My track took me over St Andrews airport (CYAV) North of the city

and on to the shores of Lake Winnipeg.

Dispelling a myth

The trip allowed me to demonstrate that Manitoba is not totally flat, as many would have you believe.

This is the horizon, as defined by the surface of Lake Winnipeg.
It is, of course, absolutely flat

Looking West from the same location,
one is immediately struck by the majestic terrain and the many vertical features that break up the horizon.

Continuing North I passed over the airport at Gimli (CYGM)
that is occasionally used by Air Canada flights.

There was not much to see as I continued West across the interlake region,
past the Shoal Lakes,

and over Lake Manitoba.

As the land finally rises above the 2000 foot level, the vegetation changes
and some fall colours appear.

I landed at Erikson Airport (CKQ6) to a friendly welcome, some gas, and a short ride into town for some coffee.
I could have walked it in five minutes, but why pass up the offer?

Flying back from Erikson towards Winnipeg,

the rugged uplands soon give way to open farmland,

and then a softer terrain appeared as I passed to the south of Lake Winnipeg.

This looks like good mosquito country...

My return track took me directly over Winnipeg International Airport (CYWG)

and the "The Forks" in downtown Winnipeg.

Parked at dusk on the ground at Lyncrest (CJL5).

I wasn't the last one home.
