An investigation is underway after an airline worker in Texas was fatally "ingested" into a jet engine.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner ruled on Monday that the worker's death was ruled a suicide. The medical examiner's office said the doctor "saw signs that pointed to suicide."

The ground crew member was on the runway at San Antonio International Airport Friday when it happened.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the incident happened around 10:25 p.m. when Delta Flight 1111 arrived at the airport from Los Angeles. While the plane was taxiing to the gate on one engine, the 27-year-old man was ingested into the engine.

One of its engines was on at the time, and the crew member was "ingested" into it, the NTSB announced.

The San Antonio International Airport released the following statement:

An accident occurred on the ground at San Antonio International Airport (SAT) tonight that resulted in the fatality of an airline ground crew member. We are deeply saddened by this incident and are working with authorities as they begin their investigation. We will share more information as details become available.
