Our hubs
Our VA operates out of several airports in Greece and Cyprus. Due to passenger traffic being spread widely across Greece, we have various hubs and focus cities, which are all listed below, along with some descriptions of these beautiful Greek cities and why you should visit them.
Athens
The city which is widely known as the ancient cradle of western democracy, Athens is located on the southern part of the Greek mainland. With sights including the Parthenon, Piraeus, the largest port in Europe, the beautiful beaches and various ancient Greek artifacts, Athens is a popular holiday destination. Its airport, Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (ATH/LGAV) is the largest airport in Greece by passenger traffic and undoubtedly the most modern airport in Greece. It serves as Aegean Virtual's primary hub.
Thessaloniki
The largest city in the Greek province of Macedonia, Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece and one of the most beautiful cities on the Mediterranean, known for being the birthplace of Alexander the Great. With its pretty quays and coast, it has the charm of a small town. Its airport, Macedonia Airport (SKG/LGTS), is the third most busy in Greece and is flown to by various known European airlines. This is Aegean Virtual's secondary hub.
Heraklion
Heraklion is located in Crete, an island south of the Greek mainland. Crete is a very popular holiday destination, and Heraklion, a beautiful little city by the ocean, is a common tourist magnet. Known as the home of the famous artist El Greco, the ancient home of the Minoans and the Minotaur, this city boasts a historic past. No wonder its airport, Nikos Kazantzakis Airport (HER/LGIR), is always full capacity during the summer! This is the second busiest airport in Greece and the tertiary hub of Aegean Virtual.
Rhodes
Rhodes is an island located in the southeast of Greece and quite close to the Turkish mainland. It is also a very popular tourist destination due to its pretty beaches and numerous holiday resorts. Historically, it was known for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven World Wonders. Additionally, the medieval city of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage site. The U.S.'s Rhode Island state is originally named after Rhodes. Its airport, Diagoras Airport (RHO/LGRP), is very busy in the summer. Our Deputy President's second cousin is one of the controllers at LGRP! This is Aegean Virtual's quaternary hub.
Kalamata
Kalamata is located on the half-island of the Peloponnese and the island's second most populous city. Known for its endless beaches but also beautiful hikes in the nearby mountains, it boasts no end of things to do. Historically, it was the capital of the Messenian province and under Sparta's control. Its airport, Vassilis Konstantakopoulos Airport (KLX/LGKL), is a small airport that is mainly used in the summer by touristic airlines, as well as Aegean. It is Aegean Virtual's smallest hub.
