TOKYO -- Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced on Tuesday upgraded safety measures for air traffic control operations at Japanese airports following the deadly Haneda Airport runway collision on Jan. 2.

The accident occurred at the Tokyo airport, one of the world's busiest airports, when a landing Japan Airlines passenger plane collided with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft on a runway, killing five of the coast guard plane's six crew members, while all 379 crew and passengers aboard the JAL plane managed to escape before the plane was engulfed in flames.
