A little while ago I put some photo's on from my first Omaka Airshow in New Zealand in 2001. Here are some from the rest of my 3 weeks out there. My wife's family live in New Zealand and we stayed with her sister in Christchurch when we weren't traveling about. We flew from Manchester to Singapore via Mumbai on 747 9V-SML. This flight arrives early morning and the flight flight to Christchurch leaves around Midnight so a good day is spent at Changi. Our flight from Singapore to Christchurch was on A340 9V-SJD. We spent a few days around Christchurch before heading to Omaka, via Kaikoura and Picton. Eileen, my wife always expects me to go spotting whenever I can. So we visited Ferrymead Museum which houses an Aircraft Museum and a Steam Railway. There is a US Navy C-47 in this museum that was used in Antarctica and a New Zealand Airways Viscount. The Mosquito is being slowly restored to static display using another fuselage and parts from HR339. I haven't been to the museum for a while so I don't know what the progress is.

To not check out Nelson airfield would have been VERY wrong, so we had a quick look on the Sunday afternoon before visiting family and again on the Monday before leaving the area. The next day Thursday 19th April I flew from Christchurch to Auckland, leaving Eileen to have a weekend with her sister. I flew on Air New Zealand B737 ZK-NAB. ex G-BHWE of Britannia AW. There was in those days a very good viewing area in the international terminal at Auckland. Good views could be had of the small inter island aircraft and after a walk there is a viewing area on the approach to the east of the airfield. I didn't bother with a hire car on this trip, so didn't go to Ardmore. I finally got there in 2005. i used public transport to visit Auckland city, MOTAT Museum and the Auckland Institute on the Friday. I flew back to Christchurch on the Saturday afternoon on B737 ZK-NGF. I had a couple of days around Christchurch before Eileen & I headed off again, this time to the south. On the 23 April we left Christchurch heading south after a brief look over the fence at the airport where the only thing of interest was NZ7003 C-130H RNZAF my last one. First airfield stop was at Lake Tekapo where we had a flight booked around the Mount Cook area. This airfield is operated by Air Safaris, at that time operating Cessna 207's and GAF Nomads. This was Eileen's first flight in a small aircraft. The weather wasn't playing and Mount Cook was lost in cloud. A bonus was that we had to land at Glentanner to drop off some Japanese tourists Glentanner is about half way up the road to the Mount Cook settlement. ZK-SEW Cessna 207 was our aircraft for the flight ZK-SEW Cessna T207A NZTL 23Apr01 by Graham Taylor, on Flickr ZK-NMD GAF N24A Nomad NZTL 23Apr01 by Graham Taylor, on Flickr ZK-NMC GAF N24A Nomad NZTL 23Apr01 by Graham Taylor, on Flickr Glentanner ZK-HAW MBB-Kawasaki BK117A NZGT 23Apr01 by Graham Taylor, on Flickr The airfield at Twizel was empty but this AS350 was noted on a pad in the town ZK-HJY AS350BA Squirrel Twizel 23Apr01 by Graham Taylor, on Flickr WanakaThe next airfield stop was on the 24th at Wanaka. This was home to 2 museums /collections in 2001. The Alpine Fighter Collection, now closed and the Wanaka Toy Museum. This has expanded a lot recently and I have plans to revisit soon. It is also a very active GA field and hosts the bi-annual Warbirds show. We paid a quick visit to the airfield and booked a helicopter flight for the next day when the weather was forecast to improve, then into Queenstown and an afternoon trip on the steam ship Ernslaw across Lake Wakatipu to the Walter Peak Station. The helicopter flight the next day was Eileen's first in a helicopter. My job at that time was heading up a Wessex servicing team and I was also the Flight Test Observer, so got a lot of hours flying in helicopters. The busiest was Timaru ZK-BEZ Cessna 180 NZTU 26Apr01 by Graham Taylor, on Flickr ZK-NFD Cessna 441 NZTU 26Apr01 by Graham Taylor, on Flickr After that all we had was the long journey home on A340 9V-SJI to Singapore for a couple of hour stop arriving and leaving in the dark, and the flight to Manchester onboard 9V-SMT B747 which again routed via Mumbai. I hope you have enjoyed the photo's. I have been to NZ a few times since and hope to go again soon. Graham GTF4J2M

Great series Graham. Certainly whets the appetite as I've never been further than Oz but its on the list if/when we ever return to normality. The T28 (ZK-JGS) at Wanaka I noted in store on a MASDC (AMARC) tour back in 1980, then coded 2P-251 of training squadron VT6.

Great pictures Graham and some superb scenery as well, have a few friends who have like yourself visited New Zealand on a number of occasions and who also sing the praises of the country. It is somewhere I would like to visit as well as Australia and Japan and China, but despite suggesting to my beloved that we should go on holiday there, it falls on deaf ears, as she is not a great flyer, the USA is the best I have managed to get her to go too, albeit several times, usually for three weeks at a go. Heathrow to LAX nearly finished her off long flights. Great report though -thanks for sharing. Happy Days and Stay safe Bob

Brilliant report Graham.
I was lucky enough to visit NZ just over a year ago... If I ever get my PC to talk to Flickr I’ll load some of my photos...
But your trip looks fantastic mate. Thanks for sharing.

I will skip a visit and do 2007 next, the first year I had a digital camera with me. Just take me a while to put everything on flikr. I had problems with signing into Flikr, then I realised I was trying to sign on the wrong email address. I needed to use my yahoo email address.

Flickr totally changed their signing in process a while ago Graham, it had me going round in circles for ages and in the end, I had to contact their support to gain access.
