Cargolux B747 Miami – Amsterdam declares emergency

A Cargolux Boeing 747 freighter en route from Miami to Amsterdam has declared an emergency enroute and is diverting to Shannon, Ireland.

Cargolux flight CLX94K, a Boeing 747 freighter conducting the transatlantic service from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), declared an emergency with squawk code 7700 and is now on diversion to Shannon.

Diversion to Shannon

Having declared an emergency in the latter stages of the transatlantic crossing, approaching the west coast of Ireland, the flight elected to divert to nearby Shannon and is currently on descent.

The nature of the emergency which prompted the unscheduled diversion is not known. Data for the flight shows that the aircraft declared the emergency from the cruise at FL370 (37,000 feet) at 06:25 UTC.

The flight subsequently initiated an immediate descent and altered course for Shannon Airport (SNN).

The flight is now vectoring for an approach to RWY24 Shannon Airport (SNN), passing through 2,500 feet on descent.

Current weather for the flight’s arrival to Shannon this morning is Marginal VFR (MVFR) with visibility 10 kilometres or more and cloud ceiling 2,900 feet, with RWY24 active.

Flight CLX94K now landed Shannon (SNN). The aircraft conducting this morning’s long haul service from MIA to AMS was a Boeing 747-4EVERF registered LX-NCL; a 17-year old converted widebody freighter aircraft belonging to the carrier Cargolux.

It is understood that flight crew are evacuation the aircraft on runway. The nature of the emergency is still unclear.

Cargolux Airlines International S.A., also known simply as Cargolux, is a Luxembourg cargo airline headquartered in Sandweiler, Luxembourg.

It is among the world’s largest all-cargo airlines, operating scheduled, charter, and third-party maintenance services. Operating from its main hub in Luxembourg, it currently operates a fleet of 30 Boeing 747-400 and 747-8 freighter aircraft on international cargo operations.

Cargolux have provided an update on this morning’s unscheduled diversion to Shannon. A main cargo deck fire warning triggered on the flightdeck, resulting in the emergency declaration and precautionary diversion to SNN.

On landing, the three crew members evacuated the aircraft via emergency slides. It was finally confirmed that there was no evidence of a fire on the main deck.
