There’s a new shop in town! Two months ago – in late April 2020 – EDF Duty Free Paradise opened its doors on Helgoland, Germany’s only island in the high sea. Due to its location near the harbor, it is the first store you will pass when you walk inland from the pier to the town. Inside the spacious, modern building you find a rich assortment of products: chocolate and other sweets, perfumes, tobacco goods and, of course, alcohol. The whisky selection is plentiful and absorbing, spanning from an entry level Jack Daniel’s No. 7 to a luxury class The Macallan Oscuro and everything in between. Since EDF Duty Free Paradise purchases its wares from a different source than most of the other duty free shops on the island, they also have several exclusives on their shelves. Another great feature: At the tasting bar next to the counter, the friendly staff is happy to let you try a dram or two. During my visit, the open bottles included many highlights such as Octomore 10.2 Masterclass, The Macallan Concept Number 2 or Highland Park 12yo Single Cask for Arlanda Airport. As you can imagine, sipping such exquisite drops on the side totally amplifies the shopping experience. (When I was there, the corona regulations rendered the tasting a bit more constrained than usual. But that did not lessen the fun, of course.) So when you take course for Helgoland again, be sure to pop in on EDF Duty Free Paradise and say hi to Wim and the team from me while checking out their top-class whiskies.

Atmosphere: The shop area spans across ~250 square meters. It is big, clean, structured, inviting and bright.
Selection: There is plenty to choose from! Besides all kinds of blended and single malt Scotch, you also find many international whiskies at EDF: Yamazaki and Hibiki from Japan, Mackmyra from Sweden, Teeling from Ireland and so on.
Price: Prepare yourself to hunt for bargains. When I was there, I bought an Octomore 10.2 Masterclass for 102,50 Euro, for example. Another incredible offer: The Macallan Concept Number 2 for 75 Euro!
Service: Wim and his team welcome you with open arms, helping you wherever they can – a perfect example of Helgoland’s much lauded hospitality.
