Snowfall Warning

Snowfall warning for parts of northern Saskatchewan

Apr 26, 2021 | 3:00 PM

Winter hasn’t loosened its grips on the far north just yet.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the far north east portion of the province including Wollaston Lake and Collins Bay.

Meteorologist Terri Lang said a low-pressure system is strengthening on its way from northern Saskatchewan into northern Manitoba.

“We do have snow falling across a fair number of places in northern Saskatchewan but the heaviest of the snow accumulation will be in that northeast corner because there’s where the low is tracking through, so we could see 10 to 15 centimetres before all is said and done there.”

Lang said it’s not unusual to see snowfall well into May, especially for those northern regions. Automatic weather stations with snow sensors show there is still a fair amount of snow on the ground.

“At Southend, there is 25 centimetres of snow still on the ground and in Collins Bay there is still 35 to 38 centimetres on the ground there.”

And there’s a chance places like Prince Albert and Meadow Lake could see some flurries in the future too, although not enough to really accumulate.

“Our forecast is indicating a bit of a cool pattern for the next week or so,” Lang said. “With a lot of ups and downs [in temperatures] as the systems move through and there will be some snow flurry activity.”

As for the far north west, Environment Canada is predicting the heavy snow will end this evening.
