CIAA goes back on the road seeking public views
(CNS): As the Cayman Islands Airports Authority continues working on its plans for all three of its facilities, it is holding another series of meetings next week on each of the three islands to discuss the development of Owen Roberts International Airport (ORIA) on Grand Cayman, the Charles Kirkconnell International Airport (CKIA) on Cayman Brac and the more controversial situation on Little Cayman at the Edward Bodden Airfield.
The CIAA is in the process of finalising the long-term sustainable development of these facilities, officials said. During the sessions attendees will learn about the findings of the Community Outreach Survey conducted in July and the CIAA’s proposed approach to the developments.
“Our vision is to deliver an excellent airport experience and we achieved extraordinary milestones in a relatively short space of time under the 2012 master plan. But there is still much more work to be done,” said CIAA CEO Albert Anderson. “We have all experienced the pandemic era, and airports around the world have had major impacts to their operations which continue today. The Cayman Islands is no exception. This new master plan will provide us with a fresh new approach and outlook to what is required today to take our airports to even greater heights.“
All three meetings begin at 5:30pm and last until 7:30pm. The first is on Monday, 21 November, at the Little Cayman Beach Resort, Little Cayman, followed by a meeting at the Aston Rutty Centre, Cayman Brac, on Tuesday, 22 November. Finally, on Wednesday, 23 November, the meeting on Grand Cayman will be held at the John Gray High School Hall (old George Hicks site). Refreshments will be provided.
The presentation coverage of the sessions will be recorded and posted to the CIAA’s official Facebook page following each session.

They should have moved the thing to east end and built some roads in George Town.

OPEN THE EXISTING SECOND DEPARTURE LOUNGE IN CAYMAN BRAC.
My understanding is that a new terminal, at least twice the size of the existing one has already been designed, or at least specced out and drawn/positioned and is to be placed between the current one and North Sound. It’s already a done deal.
Respectfully, there is lengthy process and the public meetings are a part of the process. Persons are entitled to their opinions but to misrepresent the facts is unhelpful.
At this stage, no formal decisions have been made. Ultimately, it is a government decision subject to many factors and competing priorities.
No decisions have been made and there is no deal struck on anything regarding the airports in the Cayman Islands. Please note any decision is driven by numerous factors and the elected government policies. To misrepresent the facts is mischievous at best and factually incorrect.
As Chairperson of CIAA, I feel compelled to share the facts as a person aware of the process in order to avoid any further complications or falsehoods escalating as nothing has been decided or confirmed to date.
If there are any legitimate concerns or questions I suggest they are communicated directly to the Ministry of Tourism and Transportation.

That is certainly not we were told 5 years ago. The new terminal that is built was suppose to last for decades like the new one in Bermuda.
We went cheap and now we are paying the price. So stupid.
can we please have some decent food and beverage offerings. It is a disgrace. and $16 KYD for a cocktail is a joke. Talk about leaving with a bad taste in your mouth.
Make Cayman Brac a non towered airport.
This has Kenneth written all over it! He loves a good survey! Don’t we have enough information to get on with the work ? Little Cayman needs and airport upgrade and has needed it for decades, Grand Cayman needs the Jetways get in with it Kenneth because you won’t get more than those two done before the next election and I suspect you won’t be back after that!
Don’t leave the Little Cayman airport to CIAA and their consultants. For many years CIAA has been trying to downgrade it out of existence.
Little Cayman’s STOL runway constraints have kicked the can from a morning dew grass strip, all the way to to the era of drone-quiet electric eVTOL aircraft that don’t even need a runway….or a pilot. That’s the future that is upon us. Meanwhile, we have Caymanian pilots that could fly a third Twin Otter, which we could buy for $2.5mln. and then use that third plane as extra airlift capacity to run weekend resident trips to Tulum/Cancun/Cost Rica and such.
Why are we developing the current airport when in 10 years it will be under water from the North Sound. Come on guys, stop wasting the peoples money and starting creating opportunities for Caymanians. Sea levels are rising and it’s not just on the seven mile beach!!!
How about: we have been a Cayman Airways Sir Turtle Members for over 30 years, yet this the first time their most loyal customers are hearing about a “Community Outreach Survey” from July? Who did those go to? You can’t make this stuff up.
jet bridges must be part of any upgrades as we need to be a bit more visitor friendly weather wise etc.

They should have done consultations with the public before they built the current airport project. Everybody wanted jet bridges 10 years ago but they ignored the public.
CIAA should be fired for total incompetence.
It is ludicrous that after all the money spent we have an out of date airport on weekends in the high tourist season.
Please have jet bridges. I always feel that I am going to fall down those stairs and ruin my entire trip (and I am only in my 50’s), but lifting luggage down metal stairs after getting up in the middle of the night and flying for 7 hours gives me palpitations. Carrying the luggage back up those stairs at the end of the trip is not really pleasurable either.
How far behind are CAL on relaying landing fees and taxes to CIAA? What will the delinquent accounts receivable tab be this time, and then – wait for it – surprise budgetary cup reshuffle! You can set your watch to these.
Leave Little Cayman alone!

The new Bermuda Airport built by the Canadians is magnificent and is good for the next 20 years.
Here in Cayman we are starting all over again with another new plan and millions more to spend to bring it up to standard. Lots of jobs and pockets to fill $$$$ for the local boys. “Still much more work to be done”. What a friggin joke Albert.
Why didn’t we do it right once and for all years ago?
We messed up when we decided to go cheap with the piece by piece model of airport development for years to come.
DUMB and a disgrace. Do we know what the final cost for our airport ended up being? Tell me Albert?
Have you seen the cost overruns and debt load associated with that project? If you think Cayman is expensive now, go ahead and design and try to build a $200 million dollar terminal we can’t afford. See what happens. On top of that, give it to the Canadians to run at a minimum return on investment. We already dodged that bullet once.
9:14, You don’t know what you are talking about. The Canadian Commercial Corporation which is the Canadian Government, GUARANTEED all the cost overruns.
The same offer was made for our airport.
There were no cost overruns. Spent time in Bermuda earlier this year and local Bermudians are thrilled with the project.

There was no return on investment for our airport except all the locals who fed at the public trough with all the contracts they received.
Why are we the only major airport in the Caribbean without jet bridges?
Just find out who has the contract for the stairs that go out to all the planes. That’s not an investment but just stupid.
Next year we will begin another round of airport development. What a joke.
Maybe we finally can get jet bridges? Cannot be a world class location when people have to climb down slippery stairs because a certain company needs to keep the contract!

The decision was taken years ago that we will never have jet bridges. The original Canadian proposal had jet bridges like the new Bermuda Airport, but we were not prepared to spend the additional millions at the time for jet bridges.
Another stupid long term mistake on our airport development however, the local company responsible for the stairs has a big influence on things.
Money and Caymanian interests first over the greater good. That is the way we do things here.
Returning home to Owen Roberts today, I went to retrieve my car from the car park. As usual the payment machine – which accepts only CI$ cash and not cards – refused to accept any of the cash I had. This seems to hold true for about 90% of notes in my experience. Outside, the exit barrier machine was out of order, again a frequent occurrence.
It begs the question. Given that the airport management are incapable of even running a car park, why is anyone surprised that the last renovation was so badly managed, and why is Kenneth even thinking about entrusting them with another?
Maybe that lady in the booth should be in the OUT instead of the IN and actually do some sort of work. Like maybe accepting the money for parking since the machines don’t. Why do we need someone monitoring the IN anyway???
Public still doesn’t have a clear view on how many tens of millions the last upgrade went over budget. One which included a 20% over-budget allotment buffer. That takes determination and intention.
Such an uninformed comment. The final costing is public record and came within 3% of the Outline Business Case estimate which is an estimate of all in costs over the life of the project. There is a big difference in elemental contract values and the final project cost which includes all contracts adjusted for construction inflation over the life of the project.

Several drafts of an OBC exist. I bet 9:11’s BS assertions might be near correct for one of those drafts but not for the final, approved OBC!
