Pisco Airport – SPSO

South of Lima, on Peru’s desert coast, is the town of Pisco, namesake of the famous Pisco Sour drink. Pisco is also the nearest alternate airport to Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport (SPIM).

The Pisco airport (SPSO) is a shared military / civilian use airport, with a full-time control tower, instrument approaches and a long (9,908 feet) runway. There’s a small but very nice airport terminal and an AIS facility (airport information) at the ground level of the control tower. Both jet fuel and avgas 100LL are available at Pisco.

Years ago the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) was one of the premier air forces in Latin America. Nowadays the FAP has been scaled down a lot, and I think Pisco now is mostly a training base for the FAP. I believe the old bombers in the picture are Canberras.

There are several oil and gas installations near Pisco, as well as a relatively large seaport and other industrial installations. There are some nice beaches as well as the Paracas reserve nearby.
