Mr Olayinka Adeniyi, a taxi operator under the Airport Car Hire Association of Nigeria (ACHAN), Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, has returned 2,400 US dollars, (about N888,000), and an international passport forgotten by a passenger.

Adeniyi told newsmen on Wednesday that he discovered the items in an envelope at the back seat of the car he was driving on July 29.

This was shortly after he returned from Ibese in Ikorodu where he dropped a passenger.

The cab driver said he never had it in mind to take someone’s belongings because it would put sorrow in another family’s life.

Adeniyi, who  had been operating at the airport for over 15 years, said: “At about 1:30 am on July 29, I met this passenger on arrival at the International airport.

“I negotiated with him and we agreed at N6,000 to transport him to his destination at Ikorodu.

“I returned to the airport immediately I dropped him at his house.

“But no sooner than I arrived and parked my car at the airport, I discovered an envelope had been left behind on the back seat of my car.

“I picked the envelope and opened it.

“What I saw was his international passport. I looked further into the envelope and discovered there was another white envelope inside.

I opened the second envelope only to discover that something was wrapped in it. It was dollars in $100 denomination. I counted and they were 24 in number,” he said.

Adeniyi said he reported the items to the officer- on- duty at the airport’s arrival car park and was instructed to drop the parcel at ACHAN’s secretariat.

Speaking on the recovery, the passenger, Mr Dele Ayeni said he was a living testimony to the advantages of taking cab from registered points at airports.

“I arrived Lagos from Cairo on July 29 at about 1:30 am on Monday. As I was coming out of the terminal, I met this polite driver who agreed to take me to my destination at Ikorodu.

“While on the way, I decided to drop my jacket on the floor of the car to avoid being noticed as an important man sitting in the rear seat of the car.”

He disclosed that after some times at home he discovered that some items were missing from his belongings.

“Immediately we got to my house in Ikorodu; I removed my jacket from where I had kept it and also my luggage, without noticing that the envelope in the jacket had dropped on the back seat of the car.

“Unfortunately, I did not open my luggage to bring out what I had for my family members until after I woke up in the noon. That was when I discovered that the envelope was missing in my jacket,’’ he said.

Ayeni said his wife then advised that he should go to the airport to inquire if it had been found.

He said due to her encouragement, he came to the airport and went to the car park where he had entered the cab.

Ayeni said immediately he approached and complained to one of the drivers on duty, he was informed that the driver had found the envelope and was taking it to his house.

“This is a living testimony that Nigeria has hope. We are not all bad people. I have started campaigning to people via social media to always patronise airport registered cabs.

“I want to thank ACHAN for having this type of arrangement in Nigerian airports. It is wonderful,” Ayeni said.

The Chairman of ACHAN MMIA, Mr Olubi Ojo, said Ayeni’s case was just one of the many cases the association handles on regular basis.

“This is a regular occurrence in this airport; passengers forget many things such as passports, money and other personal belongings in our cabs.

“But they are very sure of finding them if truly the items are left in any of our cabs.

“We give regular orientation to drivers on why they should return to the secretariat any item left behind by passengers in their vehicles,” Ojo said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adeniyi, the driver, is a commissioned driver because he has no car. (NAN)

Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi, says he will sign death warrant on any informant who is caught volunteering information to bandits in the state.

Idris gave this stern warning on Saturday during a sympathy visit to the inhabitants of Tudun Bichi in Wasagu Chiefdom of Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area to condole with them on the recurring attacks by bandits.

The governor, who was highly furious about the devilish act of informants, made it clear that he would append his signature to the death warrant of convicted informants.

“The activities of informants defied all norms and religious doctrines. Just for a pittance, some miscreants will provide valuable information to bandits to perpetrate mayhem against their own people.

“I will never condone or be lenient with such unscrupulous persons.

“Let it be known to the informants that whoever is convicted for volunteering information to bandits leading to the killing of innocent souls, I will sign his death warrant instantaneously,” he warned.

Idris gave an assurance that his administration would continue to provide the necessary support to the security agencies with emphasis on logistics, welfare of troops and other material requirements for combat readiness and operational successes.

He accepted the request for immediate rehabilitation of the three kilometre road linking the village with Wasagu that has become impassable due to bridge collapse.

Earlier, the Village Head of Tudun Bichi, Malam Muhammad Mika’ilu, thanked the governor for his kindness to pay condolence visit to the people.

He said that the governor was the first Chief Executive of the state to visit the town among all elected governors.

Mika’ilu in a voice full of emotion, told the governor that the bandits had prevented them from cultivating their farmlands for the past two consecutive seasons.

He added that the bandits had renewed their attacks on the advent of this year’s rainfall, attacking and killing anyone who dared to till the land.

The village head appealed to the governor to facilitate the deployment of security operatives with requisite fighting equipment to deal with the bandits to enable the community go back to normal uninterrupted farming of both food and cash crops.

He also appealed to the government to rehabilitate the major outlet linking the village to Wasagu, headquarters of Wasagu Chiefdom.

An elder of Tudun Bichi, Mallam Sani Manomi, said the bandits had killed a total of 86 people from the town in various attacks on farmlands.

The university’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Abdulkadir Dambazau, a statement in Kano urged the public to disregard the reported death of Yahaya Aisha Olabisi in the hall of residence

“It has come to our attention of a recent statement made by some media outlets regarding the discovery of a student’s corpse at the students’ hall of residence.

This is entirely false.

“We wish to address this matter promptly and unequivocally refute these claims.

“On April 23, 2024, we received news about the untimely passing of Yahaya Aishat Olabisi, a diligent and bright student of ADUSTECH, Wudil,” he said.

Dambazau explained that Olabisi spent her last evening engrossed in her studies, diligently preparing for upcoming examinations.

He said the following morning, after a shared breakfast with her roommate and a conversation with her father, the student expressed her intent to rest briefly before resuming her studies.

The dean said that, however, destiny had a different plan for her, as in the early afternoon of the same day, concerns arose when Olabisi did not respond to attempts to reach her.

He said that upon investigation, it was discovered that she had passed on in her sleep, in her off-campus residence.

According to him, immediate measures were taken, as she was swiftly taken to the university clinic, where her passing was confirmed by medical professionals.

“Given the circumstances, her remains were transferred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), for postmortem analysis to ascertain the cause of her sudden demise’’, he said.

Dambazau said that after honouring her memory and bidding her farewell, Olabisis was laid to rest on April 24.

“We urge everyone to refrain from spreading or engaging with misinformation that may harm our university’s reputation and create unnecessary panic,” he said. (NAN)
