Born from a heartfelt collaboration between Joe Elkerton of Toronto City Mission and David Han, the lead pastor of New Hope Fellowship, Ekklesia Ministries International (EMI) began modestly but with a mighty vision. It all started in the warmth of a borrowed Anglican church kitchen, where a group of dedicated university students came together each Saturday to serve hot breakfasts to the homeless.
“Those early mornings were about more than just food; they were about sharing hope and community,” recalls Elkerton, his eyes lighting up at the memory. The initiative quickly became a beacon of light for many, symbolizing physical and spiritual nourishment.
As the original volunteers graduated and ventured out, they carried the mission with them, spreading EMI’s outreach across Western Canada. Vancouver soon saw the establishment of its own chapter of the Saturday Breakfast Club, marking the beginning of a national and eventually international mission-sending agency. Today, EMI operates across North America, Asia, and Southeast Asia, including in the USA, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Cambodia, and the Philippines.

The organization’s impact is profound, particularly in urban centres where it advocates for social justice and supports the urban poor and AIDS-affected populations.

This wasn’t just a trip; it was the start of a groundbreaking initiative by Ekklesia Ministries International (EMI) to engage with Indigenous communities through a lens of solidarity and mutual respect.
As their small boat approached the mist-covered shores of Ahousaht, the volunteers felt a mix of excitement and uncertainty. The landscape was breathtaking—towering cedars and rugged coastlines, a stark contrast to the sunny suburbs of Southern California. What awaited them was a cultural experience that would change their lives and the lives of the Ahousaht youth they came to meet.
