Manchester City’s chief of football operations Omar Berrada has departed the club to move to Manchester United. He will take up the role as United’s CEO in the summer. While it’s a blow for the treble winners to lose such an important part of the off-field department it does highlight City’s status in the game.
Omar Berrada has been a part of Manchester City for the past 9 seasons. During his time at the club, he has seen City become the most successful club in England. He has played a key role off the pitch as City have risen to become world champions.
Manchester City released a statement yesterday confirming the departure of Berrada. It said: “Manchester City can confirm Omar Berrada has resigned from his role as chief football operations officer at City Football Group. The club understands his decision to look for a new challenge and he leaves with our thanks and best wishes.”
It is a blow for the treble winners to see Berrada depart for their bitter rivals. There are however two key items that can be taken from the departure of Omar Berrada. The first is that it speaks volumes of how well-run Manchester City is as a club. To have their fierce rivals headhunt their chief of football operations shows how coveted people within the City organization are.
It may also indicate that City’s fierce rivals have no concerns over the champion’s current Premier League case. Given Berrada’s role at Manchester City for the past 9 years, he would likely have had a key role in the club’s sponsorship deals. Given the nature of the charges City face, it is unlikely that their rivals would give someone such as role if he could be implicated in such a scandal.
