- Chez Janot
Chez Janot is a tour company that runs from Saint-Pierre to the islands of Miqeulon and Langlade (prounounced long-lad). The gentleman who runs it is Monsieur Jean Cloony. He is very patient and quiet. You need to buy your ticket at the Tourism office in Saint-Pierre in advance (even if you reserve online, it's best to purchase your ticket as soon as you get to Saint-Pierre). The day of your tour you meet Monsieur Cloony down by the ferry terminal. He will outfit you with water gear - both to stay warm and dry - as it is about an hour's crossing on a zodiac. This is a full day tour, leaving Saint-Pierre at 8:30 am and arriving back at 5:30 pm. Monsieur Cloony takes you past some beautiful islands on the journey so be sure to keep an eye out and your camera ready for puffins, whales, sea lions and other wild life. Once you get to Langlade you get a croissant and either tea, coffee or hot chocolate to drink at Chez Janot restaurant. Then it's into the van for a trip around the islands. Monsieur Cloony plays a recording that talks about the islands in both french and english. He also stops at several locations so you can get out and take pictures, walk up the isthmus and stroll along the beach. When you get to Miquelon you have some time to look in the shops and wander around the village before heading to a restaurant for a French style meal. On our trip, the restaurant was owned by a couple from France who were in the process of opening a hotel on the island. The food was unbelievable! We had pork with seasonal vegetables, a brownie cupcake with dessert that had some chocolate ganache in the middle, and wine. Then you get back in the van for another drive, again stopping along the way, before going for a little walk/hike in Langlade and visiting a local garden. - Ile aux Marins
Take a 10 minute boat ride from Saint-Pierre to Ile aux Marins. There are no amenities there so be sure to pack a lunch. Depending on your travel style and preference you could easily spend from an afternoon to whole day here relaxing and walking around. The island used to be inhabited but has been abandoned for some time. Recently people have started to build summer cottages on the island so you will see some newer buildings and people. Go see the remains of the fort, the shipwreck of the Pacific, the church, cemetery and lighthouse. There are several places to have a picnic or stop for a rest while walking around.
- L'Atelier Gourmand (restaurant)
This was a great restaurant. The maitre'd was very friendly and spoke excellent english. Our server wasn't as friendly, but I think that was because he wasn't very comfortable with english and we don't speak very much french. The food was delicious. We had a sampler appetizer that was all things duck: duck confit, duck pate, roasted duck etc. For dinner I had more duck with seasonal vegetables that was super delicious as well.
- Le Feu de Braise (restaurant)
Out of the three restaurants we tried, this by far had the best service. Even the waiters who weren't looking after our table would stop and check to see if we needed anything else (we were asked 3 times if we wanted dessert), would stop and chat about our visit to the islands and made sure our water glasses were never empty. This was also a great little place because instead of bringing us bottled water that we had to pay for (a very European tradition) we were brought tap water in recycled wine bottles. This was a beautiful compromise between European tradition, North American norms and art form. We had a brie and "red" berry appetizer. it was a crispy crepe-like shell filled with creamy brie cheese and red berries such as raspberries, blackberries and strawberries. I had scallops with a seasonal coleslaw, rice and what I think was either a squash or polenta type potato-wedge. For the service alone, I would recommend this restaurant, the delicious food was icing on the cake.
- Doris (restaurant)
The service at this restaurant wasn't as good as it was at the other two. However, this could have been because we were in a hidden corner, as the other tables seemed to have excellent service. The food was amazing. I kind of wish I had tried the guacamole tabbouleh as an appetizer but I was saving room for dessert. For dinner I had cod on a bed of zucchini with sun-dried tomatoes on top. The meal was my favourite out of the three restaurants as sundried tomatoes make everything taste better. For dessert we had creme brulee. It was good, but I really wish they hadn't ran out of the goat cheese mousse because THAT sounded amazing.
- Bus Tour
This is a must for all first time visitors to the islands. We did it at the end of our trip and learned so much. I would recommend doing it at the beginning as it will give you lots of ideas what else you can do while visiting the islands (some of which the Toursim office didn't mention) and will give you more options if you plan for staying at least a week in Saint-Pierre. The driver is a native to Saint-Pierre and speaks limited english but his co-pilot is a vivacious Newfoundlander who has been living in Saint-Pierre for over 20 years. He drives while she narrates the tour in both english and french.
- Walking around town
Be sure to take a wander around Saint-Pierre to see the cemetery the Calvary, Fort Lorraine and war memorial. These are all located in the more residential part of Saint-Pierre and it's worth the walk to see what it would be like to live on the island. Some parts are a bit steep uphill but if you have good shoes and take your time it's definitely worth it
