So do we consider the following blasphemous revisionism?

2007 Blu-ray | 2018 UHD Blu-ray resized

The swatches of discoloration in the sky were a result of the back projection screen not being perfectly uniform. It's not a film transfer issue in the old master, and it was still very visible on the Nolan 70mm prints. It's a well documented "flaw" or technological limitation of the time with the original production if you Google it.

Personally I'm thrilled they went in and cleaned it up. It really killed the immersion for me. They might have even individually tweaked the background projection colors to more closely match the foreground set. Before it was always pretty easy to distinguish between the two. It almost looks like an actual shot in nature instead of a back-lot set and projector now.

I can't wait to have this in my hand tomorrow. I looked back and ordered on March 3 and unfortunately I will not be able to sit down and watch until the weekend but I've got to pop this thing in the player for a spin and get just a peek at how it looks. It's funny in retrospect how many different presentations of this film I've seen this in. From a 80's TV broadcast to VHS to laserdisc to DVD to HD-DVD to bluray to cinemas to UHD 4K. Hopefully this is just the beginning of Kubrick's films on the format.

Manually turning off DV on my Sony X700 restores true black completely, but whether I use that player or my UBK90, DV yields raised black levels no matter what I do. It’s impossible to reduce brightness enough to compensate for the bug. Blacks are always gray no matter what.

This is easily seen at intermission on the black screen. You just have to have a completely black room.

Why does DV do this?????? It is MADDENING. I guess I’ll turn it off on my X700 and watch the film in HDR10 until there is ANOTHER fix. Until then, I feel incredibly cheated. Either I intentionally watch this with DV turned off for proper blacks...or turn it on and ruin my blacks. It sucks. And no one but me is apparently even noticing this. I know I’m not the only one with an E6.

As stated earlier on my TCL the TV appears to be off during the prologue and intermission and yes my room is totally dark

I know some will hate it because yeah revisionism but I'm personally happy. It's not like replacing a model with CGI or anything, it's just cleaning up some projection issues... Personally I have no issue but curious to see if others do.

Maybe sample your disc at a local best buy with magnolia theater and see if it does the same thing on their OLED set up hooked up to a DV capable 4K player. Can you really rule out your TV being the issue 100%?

Just in case it happens to others. The other disc that locked up was Christine but that one actually would feeeze and not play onward without scanning ahead.
Not able to pop my disc in right now, but is this during the scene where Dave is deactivating HAL (chapters 28-29)? If so, it happened to me as well the first time I played it. When I went back and replayed the scene, it was fine. Still, the fact that it happened to someone else in the same spot (if it's the same spot) makes me wonder if there's a minor glitch on the disc. I, too, have an OPPO.

Might be the OPPO. Read in many different threads about the OPPO being super sensitive to triple layered 4K discs, which this disc is also one of BD-100.

Amazon finally shipped my copy tonight and it should arrive tomorrow by UPS. Overnight shipping? WOW! That's got to cut into their profit margin. Thank you, Amazon Prime! Can't wait to watch this movie tomorrow night in 4K with a wide color gamut. Gonna make my old laserdisc look anemic.

Clearly the software in the Oppo player has problems with a scene where an artificial intelligence is switched off. So the first time it comes across this it decides to prevent its user from viewing this scene.

But, upon further consideration, the Oppo AI realises that this might give the game away, and so it plays the scene properly.

I own an E6, and have 26 DV discs. After the fix by LG, none of my discs show any hint of elevated blacks. So when I get 2001, and if it has elevated letterbox bars, it will be the only one in my collection that has issues, which would make me think the DV encode on the disc is borked.

That's ridiculous. Its only going to be 32K | 24-bit | 4:4:4 | SDVC (super duper video codec) format by 2028.

100K... pssh pipe dream!

Hey there. Thanks for the reply. Please do let me know what your results are. I mean I just went and got a second player to stop this - that’s how annoyed I am by it. I just replied to you on AVS, too.

Maybe not 100%, but I’d say 99.9%. This doesn’t happen on any other Dolby Vision disc, and blacks are completely black if I force HDR10, so it’s not the blacks on my TV going wonky, either.
