Dublin EIDW to Waterford EIWF in the Cessna c172r

Postby Sealbhach » Tue Dec 07, 2010 5:18 am

This is my home-rolled landcover scenery made from Corine data, plus OSM data for the roads and rivers. There's also a view of the new terminal for EIDW done by eag1e, and scighera's wonderful rendering of Poolbeg Power Station.

I'm hoping to be able to make my scenery available for download for anybody who wants it on the forums, I'm just waiting for permission from reptile so that I can include the bog textures which I think are kind of necessary to display the landscape of Ireland properly.

So anyway, first off a view of the terminal at EIDW (click on any of the images to see it in full size):

Image

Passing over Dublin Bay, we get a view of Poolbeg Power Station, Bull Island, Howth Head and in the distance the EIDW terminal buildings.

Image

Heading south towards Wicklow. One of these mountains is called The Sugarloaf, I'm not sure which one. Bray Head is also visible:

Image

Now heading West Southwest over the Wicklow Mountains:

Image

After turning south again, we eventually find this river, which enters the sea at Waterford:

Image

Yes indeed, following the river along, eventually we can see the sea in the distance:

Image

This is the view behind us. A slight downside to using these summer textures is that there is a noticeable tiling effect in some areas, though at least with the Corine landcover, the different land cover shapes usually break up the pattern:

Image

Descending towards Waterford EIWF now. I can see the PAPI lights in the distance.

If you look in the foreground, you can see some deformities in the landcover, this is a known problem with terragear and I've tried to mimimize it as much as I can. It's limited to a few small areas and I'm so sick of rebuilding the same tiles over and over again and getting the same result that I'm just going to leave it for now. Maybe I'll try to fix it later, but you won't often notice it. It usually happens near large urban areas, but only in small areas of the scenery.

Image

Descending some more, again see the glazed look of parts of the landcover. The train line goes straight across the water. Somebody recently suggested trying to automatically build a standard bridge type every time this happens, with some algorithm or something. That would be nice.

This is a representation of Waterford City:

Landing at EIWF:

When I get to make the scenery available for anyone that wants to try it out, I will be including also a new terminal for Knock Ireland West Airport EIKN. It was made by an X-Plane user and I converted it in Blender so it can be used in Flightgear. He has given his permission to release it under the GPL and to add it to the Flightgear world scenery. It's a small building really, but EIKN has a good long runway that can accomodate 747s. Sometimes a 747 lands there. Here's how it looks:

And finally, three screenshots I thought turned out really nice. These are from County Kerry, near EIKY:

Those shots are beautiful.

The problems with the textures are likely data issues, and FlightGear not being designed to handle really top drawer geographic data (at least for now).

Great looking scenery. Did you include roads?

Hi ot-666. Yes it's got roads from Open Street Map. Probably too many roads really. What's cool though is that you can see which ones are motorways, and in some areas of the scenery there is a landclass specifically for land associated with major roads. I like how there's a tree in the middle of one of the roundabouts there:

But by far the best feature of this scenery, I think, is the coastline. The entire coastline of the Republic of Ireland is made from Corine shapes, so it much nicer than the default coastline. Here is an example video of the coastline in North Mayo:

I loved the video, except the music kept making me expect something bad to happen to the F-16 ;)

This does look stunning, really can't wait to try this out in a hop across the Irish Sea!

Thanks Algernon. I was intending to make a post on the UK&I forum once it was ready for download.

I'm just waiting to hear from the guy who made the Alternate Textures, because I think people would need them with my slight colour adjustment for the bogs (moorlands) to get a more realistic looking landscape.

I've emailed him three times in the last week, but got no response. When he originally released those textures he said we can do what we like with them, but that if we want to alter them to contact him.

If I don't hear from him soon I'll have to make a decision. I'm sure he wouldn't mind very much that I've altered the colour of one of his textures... at least I hope not.

It's a pity the Corine land cover project was not done in the UK, but there must be similar data around. It's not actually all that difficult to build this kind of scenery once you figure out how it fits together.

I think it's a very minor adjustment, and you've made a perfectly decent attempt at contact. I'm sure there won't be an argument.

This is one of the things the UK doesn't seem to be investing a lot in, and that doesn't surprise me. The closest thing so far - I think - is the Open Ordnance Survey thing, which at least offers highly accurate terrain and road details if not actual aerial photography.
