Xbox Series X review: Orbx's Mackay YBMK

Aircraft used: default & LVFR 320s, AT7, PMDG 738
Live weather: on

DETAIL

The terminal building is beautiful. We don’t get an interior but we do get the open-plan courtyard between the terminal and apron, which features an incredible amount of detail: covered walkways, custom foliage, billboards, paving slabs, bins, fences… and an outdoor bar with seating area! We don’t, unfortunately, get any static passengers. The terminal landside is similarly detailed and the trussed arch midway along the building — both airside and landside — is fantastically modelled.

Ground textures are excellent, both airside and landside. The runway is grooved, as so many in Australia are, and the textures that represent these grooves are very well done.

We get a good amount of peripheral detail around the airfield, including FBO hangars, utility buildings, etc.

PERFORMANCE

Flawless, as is stability. This airport reminds me at lot of Orbx’s own Rockhampton (a similar size and layout), which I reviewed previously — however that airport isn’t quite as stable and I’m convinced it’s the omission of a terminal interior at Mackay that’s made the difference.

VERDICT

Like Rockhampton, Mackay is a small regional airport in the midst of some very striking scenery. It’s surrounded by photogrammetry, which further enhances the landscape, and flying into here is a real pleasure for the eyes. Performance and stability being top-notch is just the cherry on top!

I definitely recommend this scenery. Like Rockhampton it’s one of many third-party regional airports available in the area and so a valuable addition for those who like to hop around Oz’s east coast.

I just wish someone would make a study-level Dash 8…

Oh we need a high quality Dash 8 for sure. And a Fokker 100.

I’ve flown in and out of Mackay but I don’t remember the airport at all. It was not many years ago, must have been average.

I do love self manoeuvring stands though, especially the angled ones like this, it makes the parking into a fun challenge.
