About This File

Kumamoto Airport (Aso Kumamoto to its friends) is Kumamoto prefecture’s main access point, handling domestic flights to and from Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Okinawa, and the nearby island of Amakusa. Its international terminal connects Kumamoto to Seoul, with seasonal flights to Taipei and charter flights to Myanmar and Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The route between Kumamoto and Tokyo-Haneda was Japan’s sixth busiest in 2013. The airport got spiffy remodeling job in 2012 which updated the domestic terminal with lush-looking wood appointments. RJFT is nestled in a high valley at the foot of the Mt. Aso volcano, one of the largest active volcanoes in the world. Approaches to RWY25 afford dramatic views of Mt. Aso’s vast caldera.

Features:

  • Layout, ATC routing, custom roads by jomni
  • Custom models by krogerfoot (terminals, tower, local buses and taxis, animated ground service vehicles, hillside wind turbines)
  • Jonathan “Marginal” Harris’s Autogate animated objects (see included documentation for required plugin)
  • Vehicles running all over the apron thanks to Marginal's marvelous Ground Traffic plugin
  • Custom library adding Japanese and Kyūshū-specific vehicles to area roads
  • English airport charts (pdf) from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation
  • Eerily depopulated airport environment
  • Tons of custom lighting

Designed for X-Plane 10

The airport should be usable for XP9, but needs XP10 for ground traffic animation and HDR lighting. The sheer amount of custom lighting may impact your performance, especially if you have a Mac, as I do. Fiddle with your texture-resolution settings for best results.

About the screenshots:

The screenshots show some add-ons to the stock X-Plane 10 product. The underlying terrain mesh has been greatly improved by Andras Fabian’s donationware HD Mesh Scenery V2, which is highly recommended for flying in Japan. The surrounding landscape scenery is augmented with John Spahn’s UrbanMAXX, and the clouds come from SkyMAXX Pro V2. The darker and more detailed pavements are thanks to FlyJSim’s free Enhanced Runways HD files. The Japan Transoceanic Air livery on FlyJSim’s 737-200 is courtesy of young Camjay7. The Fokker F27-600 is a beautiful freeware plane by atgcab, sporting a 1960s ANA livery lovingly recreated by X-Plane user Ru-Ski. Some vehicles on the roads come from Vehicle Library Extension v1.2, adapted by chris k with vehicles from joyfulsongster, Cami de Bellis, and uwespeed.

UPDATE

Pending tests with XP9, we'll specify that this file is compatible with XP10 only.

UPDATE 2

We are vying for Best Scenery for January 2015. Remember our motto: "We are not ashamed to vote for ourselves."

UPDATE 3

The library.txt was modified to limit the range of the local vehicles on the roads. A small modification, but this will prevent you from seeing airport coaches heading to Kumamoto wandering around the rest of Japan, a thousand kilometers away.

UPDATE 4

Replaced some static vehicle objects and library vehicle objects with versions that do not animate.

UPDATE 5

Added numerous improved animated and static objects, updated library for better selection of Japanese vehicles on area roads.
