About This File

La Tuque Airport, (IATA: YLQ, ICAO: CYLQ), is a registered aerodrome located adjacent to La Tuque, Quebec, Canada.
La Tuque is a city located in north-central Quebec, Canada, on the Saint-Maurice River, between Trois-Rivières and Chambord. The population was 11,227 at the Canada 2011 Census, most of which live within the urban area. While the urban area of La Tuque is relatively small, as of 2012, its entire territory is the largest municipality in Canada.
The name, which dates to the eighteenth century, originates from a nearby rock formation which resembles the well-known French-Canadian hat known as the tuque.

La Tuque Airport
Town of La Tuque

A brief personal note here which explains the care I've taken with this small Quebec airport. Right after graduating from McGill university in the late 70's, I took a teaching job with the Commission Scolaire de Nouveau Quebec and for the next 5 years my wife and myself taught English as a Second Language to Inuits in Northern Quebec (now Nunavik). In one of the settlements (Povungnituk) we were good friends with a delightful Quebecois couple, Denis and Armande Dumais who often spoke longingly for their home town, La Tuque. Eventually, when we returned "down south" and were living in Montreal, we took a bus to La Tuque and went to visit the Dumais. I modelled this airport more out of a tribute to this couple than anything else. Compared to other airports in Quebec, CYLQ is of average size and has a decent 5,000 ft X 150 ft runway; a few structures which seem to be in good working order, on the West edge of a seemingly bustling small town.
My time was largely spent modelling the lumber mill where Denis took me for a tour (if it's the same one) and the shopping center North of the town (which I don't remember seeing in the early 80's). There is also apparently a small leisure center by the mall which I also included in the scenery. Oh.. for the purists among you: There is a large Antenna tower at the airport but not the kind I had access to, so I had to make do with a different one. My apologies..:)

CYLQ is at an elevation of 548 ft / 167 m and there is a single Asphalt runway, 01/19  at 5,000 feet (1,524 m). Using every inch of the runway, AI jets were able to take off but it's up to you if you want to try this in your favorite 737. Choose a day when it's not raining. Straight North, at around 120 km is Roberval, CYRJ which is on the shores of the  pretty Lac Saint-Jean. Quebec city, the capital of this lovely province is at around the same distance but to the SE.  If you are coming in with a small GA aircraft, you may wish to land at CSG5, St. Jean Chrysostome  which is on the other side of the St. Lawrence river from Quebec City. In the same series but further South you can visit CYFJ (Mount Tremblant's Federal prison modelled), Trois Rivieres, CYRQ and CYJN, Ville de Saint-Jean.

Enjoy your flight.

Installation:

Put unzipped folder, Canada_QC_CYLQ in X-Plane, Custom Scenery folder. Restart X-Plane. If scenery does not show up, make sure that it is above Global airports and any Mesh Scenery you may be using,  in the scenery_packs.ini file. Remember to disable other sceneries of the same airport, if you have any. If the scenery does not look like the pictures, then you must have picked up another scenery in your Custom Scenery folder.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  1. I upload these sceneries to this site even though they are normally approved and later included in future versions of X-Plane so that users will have a jump start on these airports until they are in fact included in the default X-Plane version. Also, I occasionally update these sceneries and unless the update is big, then I only submit the update on this site. So, if you download any of my Canada_XX_XXXX sceneries and find that they are not different from the default, it is because this scenery has already been approved and included in X-Plane. If you receive any error messages during loading, please update X-Plane to the latest version.
  2. If you notice trees growing where they shouldn't or other autogen incursions, try disabling your Mesh to see if this is the problem. Please write to me if this happens. This scenery like all the others (I've updated quite a few) should be compatible with HD Mesh V4.
  3. Do not be misled by the tiny size (Less than 30 kb)of the file. This is a LEGO-BRICK scenery and uses the megabytes of art assets  already included in your installation of X-Plane. It will compare favourably, at times better, to other (much larger sized) sceneries of this area and will probably exceed your expectations. I believe that in order to enjoy a flight simulator you shouldn’t need to fill up your computer with gigabytes of data or  rely on many third party libraries unless of course you fly exclusively in one small area.
  4. Even though there is no tower at this airport and all traffic is CTAF (Common traffic advisory frequency), I did put in a tower in order to animate AI aircraft. Without it there would be no traffic. In all other details and placement of buildings etc. I have tried to keep this as realistic as possible. Note: The version I have submitted for future releases of X-Plane on the Gateway site will only have CTAF frequency but in all other respects, the scenery is identical.

Equally Important

Please take the time to rate and leave a short comment or constructive criticism so that I'd know I am on the right track with these sceneries. I understand that one normally doesn't return to the download page after you've installed the scenery but try anyway. Comments do motivate scenery designers!

Also please report any bugs or problems you come across while using this particular scenery.

Thank You and  Enjoy the scenery!

Hello prospero246,

Thank you for sharing your great work on small airport scenes in Quebec!

I share your views on the fact of perpetuating your sceneries by using the X-Plane basic libraries, which saves hard disk space, RAM, video memory and promote their integration into the current X-Plane basic sceneries!

Thank you for taking the time to put in interior and exterior lighting for evening or night flights, there is never too much, but often, too little!

Thank you for being exemplary in your way of working and in your objectives, you are a precursor of the world of tomorrow that is coming ! c| : )

Bravo !

Several buildings seem to me to be duplicates of different models and merged together. In the pictures I point with red arrows what looks unnatural to me, like a fusion of disparate building construction.

But I'm amazed that your presentation images of the scene include these oddities, is this your Lego design or is it unintentional?

Here's in pictures:

In my X-Plane-11 scenery folder management file "scenery_packs.ini", your scenery is on top of everything, as you will see in the attached compressed archive "scenery_packs.ini.zip".

Thank you for your generosity!

I landed here at night! It was the first time I experiencex the black hole effect! Had trouble getting the aircraft radio control of aerodrome lighting (ARCAL) working!

Response from the author:

Good to know that these sceneries may  be somewhat useful to real pilots.

Wow! This is a great airport.

Always flying 5-10 miles east of it when heading north.

I have been to the Town of La Tuque several times and it is great to see it more alike in X-Plane.

It would be cool if we could implement "Canadian Tire", "Mc Donald" and groceries stores like "IGA" "Metro" "Maxi"... in X-Plane lego bricks because it is easy to spot them up in the air in Quebec.

Thanks again

Response from the author:

Thanks for the comments. I did model the MacDonald at the lower corner of the shopping mall but my alternative was using an autogen art asset which can randomly change to any other fast food outlet. Also unfortunately, no Canadian Tire or other big stores signs in my arsenal.
