Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (IATA: NBO, ICAO: HKJK), is an international airport located in Nairobi, the capital of and largest city in Kenya. Located in the Embakasi suburb 15 kilometers (9 miles) southeast of Nairobi's central business district, the airport has scheduled flights to destinations in over 50 countries. Originally named Embakasi Airport, the airport's name was changed in 1978 to honor Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first president and Prime minister. The Airport served over 7 million passengers in 2016, making it the seventh busiest airport in passenger traffic on the continent.
Terminal
There are two terminals. Terminal 1 is arranged in a semi-circular orientation and is divided into four parts: 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1E are used for international arrivals and departures while terminal 1D is used for domestic departures and arrivals.
Terminal 1A International Departures and Arrivals
Terminal 1A has a capacity of 2.5 million passengers a year and 3 levels, 30 check-in counters, 12 departure gates, ample seating and food & retail options. The Arrivals area houses 5 baggage carousels. This terminal is used primarily by Skyteam member airlines.
Terminal 1B International Departures
Terminal 1B houses common-use check-in counters, with security check points leading to the departure lounge on level 1. On level one is the Aspire lounge as well as duty free shopping outlets and cafe's.
Terminal 1C International Departures
This terminal houses common-use check-in counters, with security check points leading to the departure lounge on level 1. On level 1 are duty free shops, Kenya Airways Simba Lounge and the Turkish Airlines Lounge and a cafe.
Terminal 1D Domestic Flights
Serves departing and arriving passengers on domestic flights. Occupied only Kenya Airways and its subsidiary, Jambo jet.
Terminal 1E International Arrivals
Following the closure of the main International Arrivals and Departures terminal after a fire, a parking facility was converted into the temporary International Arrivals terminal. This terminal was subsequently opened to serve arriving passengers on airlines operating out of Terminals 1B and 1C.
NOTE:
Remodeling & extending Terminals 1B, 1C & 1D is scheduled for 2017, after which JKIA is predicted to be able to handle 12M passengers.
Lounges
In January 2015, The Simba Lounge and Pride Lounge which are situated on the second floor of Terminal 1A were opened. The two facilities, with a combined capacity of 350 people, were developed at a cost of KES 135 million ($1.35 Million), and are for the use of KQ's Premier World and SkyTeam's Sky Priority passengers. There is also a Turkish Airlines TAV Lounge (T1B), as well as the Swissport Aspire Lounge (T1C). Both are regular lounges, which can be accessed by elite status or a paid-pass.
Second runway
In January 2017, a new instrument landing system-equipped runway 5,500 meters (18,000 ft) in length was approved for construction at a cost of KES 37 Billion shillings (approximately US$370 million). According to KAA's managing director John Anderson, construction of the new runway which will be bigger than the existing one will begin this year (2017). It will also double aircraft movement from 25 to 45 per hour. The new runway will be a category 2 runway and will complement the older runway built in the 1970s. The proposed design of the project is a 4.8 kilometers long and 75 meters wide runway. The current runway is 60 meters wide and 4.2 kilometers long. This is an ICAO code F which can handle the new generation wide bodied aircraft like the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 747-8. The new runway will have fog lights, currently the present runway is only lit at the sides. The runway will also enable long haul flights to destinations like New York city carrying up to 32 tonnes of passengers and cargo.
Kenya Airways Launches Historic Nairobi to New York Flight
From Airline Geeks: https://www.airlinegeeks.com
Kenya Airways inaugurated its new longest flight on Monday from Nairobi to New York, becoming the first and only airline to connect East Africa and New York with a nonstop flight. The near-6,400 nautical mile long flight from Kenya’s capital city to New York touched down at sunrise on Monday, being greeted by a customary water cannon salute to congratulate the airline on its new service.
The ultra-long-haul service is operated by the airline’s newest wide body aircraft, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which Kenya uses as its primary long-haul aircraft after recently retiring its Boeing 777 fleet. Onboard the aircraft were numerous Kenyan dignitaries, including members of parliament, ambassadors and cabinet secretaries, Kenya Airways CEO Sebastian Mikosz, Kenya Airways Chairman Michael Joseph and the U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec.
The first flight, KQ2, departed Kenya Sunday night at 11:30 p.m. before making the 14-hour and 45-minute trek to New York, according to FlightRadar24, on what appeared to be a straight line from Nairobi to New York. Although thunderstorms had forced the aircraft to overfly Connecticut before heading into JFK, the airplane landed just as the sun was rising at 7:15 a.m., marking the dawn of a new era of U.S./East African connectivity.

Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is committed to positioning JKIA as the preferred regional aviation hub. In this regard, KAA has embarked on a renovation project to upgrade the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s Terminal 1B and 1C.
The 12-month airport development project which is estimated to cost KES. 963 million aims to refurbish the departure halls to improve the check-in, security screening, retail operations as well as passenger lounge experience.
Once completed, the newly renovated light-filled departure terminals will deliver modern concessions and amenities that will give travelers a friendly and memorable experience. It will also ease passenger flow and increase efficiency due to the centralization of security screening procedures and the reallocation of available floor spaces to international departure gates.
“The refurbishment and facelift of the T1B & 1C aims to align the passenger experience in these terminals to match what is offered at T1A. Said KAA Ag. MD/CEO Alex Gitari. “The remodeling project is an integral part of the ongoing JKIA Customer Service Improvement Plan (CSIP) which was formulated from feedback from our stakeholders and customers”, he added.
To expedite the implementation of this project, Airlines that have been operating from Terminal 1B and 1C are being temporarily relocated to Terminal 1A and Terminal 2. To minimize inconveniences, passengers are requested to arrive at the airport at least 4 hours before their flight departures. The original article can be found here :

Hi Pilots!
Wishing you all well, am glad and humbled to announce to you about the new and updated version 6 of HKJK_Airport scenery. as an upcoming X-Plane11 Airports Scenery developer and with a background in Architectural design, my main objectives and goals are to assist the community by contributing my skills and knowledge in developing high quality 3D Airport Sceneries for X-plane 11, as much as possible. I design 3D Airports…etc as a hobby, during my free time for the love of X-Plane 11, Architectural design and Aviation in general.
If perhaps you would like to follow up on the real-World design process and or any other additional renovations and upgrades regarding to HKJK, you can do so on the official ADP INGENIERIE Consulting, Design and Engineering website here: https://www.adp-i.com/en/projects/design-new-passenger-terminal-jomo-kenyatta-international-airport-nairobi or https://www.kaa.go.ke/press_release/
Also, if you would like to check out for real live air traffic radar for HKJK Airport or any other Airport here is the link https://www.radarbox24.com/data/airports/NBO This Scenery, will help in simulating and showcasing the future upcoming new look of HKJK Airport, that is Terminal 1B & 1C including the existing Terminal 1A. I therefore decided to completely re-build and model all the Terminals in one semi-circle, however I do not claim that am 100% as design may change on site, but will make sure that I will update and include any other facility that will be added once the actual real World renovations are completed in about one year from now.
FEATURES
· Custom made high-quality 3D modelling of the new upcoming Terminal 1B & 1C including the existing Terminal 1A and texture mapped using 4K DDS textures, for the best visual graphics and performance. This will ensure that the GPU is not overloaded when processing graphics details. For best experience, I recommend setting HDR settings to high and above depending with your GPU type when loading X-Plane 11.
· Added ground vehicles and Aircraft's traffic routes for more immersive.
· Dynamic night lighting effects like seen in the real-World actual Airport, if you enjoy night flights be assured that I took that into consideration and enhanced the night lighting details as seen on my screenshots.
· Super realistic 3D modelling of the actual main Terminals using real World textures for both day and night. However, I do not claim to be 100% perfect but it’s close enough.
· Added SAM Animation manager, for a realistic jetways and docking system movement’s.
· Custom made Terminal liveries using different types of textures, just like in the previous version but this time much more improved and enhanced. The liveries include some preview photos in each given folder apart from the default backup folder.
· Highly detailed overall 3D scenery to match real World placement on the map.
· Compactible with Live traffic addon that displays real world Aircraft’s traffic, and parking in real time Continuously.
· I have included some custom Terminal livery textures, that will enable you to change the look of Terminal 1B & 1C respectively. Simply locate and open the livery folder located in the main HKJK Scenery folder and select the livery folder volume. No. of your choice, copy the DDS textures, then go back to Custom objects folder located inside HKJK main folder, open the Terminal folder and paste over-writing the existing textures. There is an included backup livery folder of the default textures in case you would like to switch back to the default textures. For the effects to take place, I highly recommend you load a different type of scenery Airport, then switch back and load HKJK scenery that way, X-Plane 11 will be able to refresh all the textures correctly.
