Kumiankka
link to fly-in index thread Quote Next week's destination, on Sunday, May 6th, takes us far across the Pacific, for our second visit to Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Manila, Philippines (RPLL). It's been 10 years since our last visit, and the scenery looks quite different now, the main difference being the large numbers of skyscrapers now around. Similarly to last week's destination, most of the tall buildings are recent constructions, so it's not entirely just a matter of X-Plane getting more accurate - the skyline has actually changed quite a bit in real life too! Be careful with your approaches, as the airport is surrounded by densely-populated urban area on all sides, and the surrounding volcanic terrain may present challenges as well. Have a nice trip - maligayang paglalakbáy! ostkamp
Hi all, here is a list of more scenery packages for the Philippines if someone needs to add stuff for some short hops or sightseeing. Some of the stuff is already a bit old but may still be better than just a 2D airport with just runways - however I did not check whether XP 11 might have better solutions already included in the meantime. I added included star rating, ICAO and name of author to the list. Approx. star rating was given only if significant amount of ratings was present and excluding any self-ratings. Buckyjunior
Can't make it today. We have a toddler granddaughter for the weekend. Exhausting! Looks like there are plenty of opportunities for both long and short flights.
cyl8
I was "a little" later than usual and I think most have gone home when I started. A packed Saturday with 5 am start and didn't get to sleep till 1am, waking up early was just not happening Anyways, with Kumi, Rajo, ostkamp still online, I decided i was just going to explore the location in my AS350. ostkamp touched down in a short while after I lifted up, while Kumi was spotted approaching in a Philippines A320 from a different runway. Kumi went into the terminal for a coffee break, so I went around to explore Manila and nearby towns. I spotted a double-decker when I made a rooftop stop. I couldn't make the CS, either Rajo or perhaps Ghun1? The next stop was going to be Mount Banahao, I was trying to take some pictures while crossing Laguna de Bay, unfortunately i wasn't able to maintain balance while looking from outside of craft... Once beamed back to RPLL, I explored the airport itself and found many interesting features. @tdg 's sceneries are always very enjoyable to fly with I found Ghun1 in v22 sitting toward the end of airport and stopped by, but I think he was still in the break room while warming up the engines. I wonder who came out with the 7 days a week system, all work and little time left for fun! I call it a bad design!
ostkamp
Hi all, PIREP time again ... @cyl8 Yeah, @tdg sceneries are really great, he gets the job done in just a few kilobytes sizes with good performance using all those great libraries around. I just wished we had a global library system where everyone could easily add his / her stuff instead of constantly having to watch out for upgrades of a few dozens of different libraries. For the fly-in I did two legs, the first one leading from Francisco Bangoy (Davao) Intl. (RPMD) at the Southern end of the islands to Tacloban Daniel Z Romualdez (RPVA) in the Aerobask Pipistrel Panthera. Charging the battery with external GPU while checking the aircraft: This time I didn´t cheat and called in the push back truck from Better Pushback module. At first attempt I got told they could not do a pushback for this kind of aircraft when engines were running ... and they were right. That would have destroyed my propeller ... The front tyre got fixed for transport. Off we go ... Ready for takeoff ... I tried flying VOR based, first on outbound radial from Davao VOR, then via VOR Butuan (BN). On my way I also passed along an island which has a town named "San Francisco". I wonder how many of them exist on the planet? Tacloban airport is on that small peninsula right ahead of the plane. On appraoch After landing I had the usual cake break. Here are some totals ... After refueling (myself ) and changing to a faster aircraft (here the flower power version of the Aerobask Eclipse 550 v3) I prepared for the next and final leg to take us to destination Manila. On my way I passed this large mountain, maybe a volcano. @Kumiankka and myself were the last aircraft coming in for landing at this time, he was a little more far out, but faster and aiming for the ILS equipped runway while I had decided to use runway 13 due to wind conditions. Since I came in frome the opposite side, I had to overfly the airport first. I was curious who of us would touch down first since the two runways cross each other at some point. On final, after a 180 degree turn over the ocean. Gear down, Flaps set to full landing position, Landing speed achieved. Cleared to land runway one-three! When zooming in, X-Plane unrealistically seems to close up on distant objects. Got parked. Here we can see @Kumiankka´s aircraft on the left side taxiing to Philippines airways terminal. Don´t know about next week yet (have to check for Formula 1), but hope to be around before taking a break for some weeks. Have a nice week, Captains! Kumiankka
Started out with a medium-haul flight from Singapore in an old A321 model, departing before sunrise (not real time, as usual for these time zones) The sun came up towards the end of the cruise to the Philippines. There were patches of clear sky here and there between the low clouds, still a vast improvement over the past few fly-ins. On ILS final to runway 06, with @ostkamp approaching the other runway Great view of the city on short final Parked at the Philippine Airlines terminal after landing Most of the traffic was already gone when I got back from coffee break. I took off in the SF-260 and set course for nearby Subic Bay. A left turn after takeoff set me up well for a tour of the city center. Turning west for Manila Bay, staying below the clouds to remain VFR Passing the island of Corregidor Flying north along the volcanic coastline Arriving at Subic Bay
