Kumiankka
link to fly-in index thread Quote Next Sunday, September 2nd, it's time to head once again for Southeast Asia, more specifically Nội Bài International Airport (VVNB), serving Hanoi, Vietnam. As this is a modern airport with two long, parallel runways, it'll be a welcome change from all those tricky places we've visited lately. But don't get too complacent, as the proximity of mountainous terrain as well as the possibility of rainy and foggy weather this time of the year may still put your instrument flying skills to the test! Custom scenery is available, incredibly enough still based on the same package we were using for our previous visit to Hanoi, back in 2009. Note that this time you should install both packages linked below, not just one. Have a good journey - lên đường bình an! ostkamp
For those of us who are interested in scenery: I found the additional Vietnam scenery packages listed below. Ho Chi Minh City was formerly named "Saigon" and was the capital of former South Vietnam). Hai Long Bay should be somewhere about 140 km / 87 miles east of Hanoi at the coast. Skylark2992
Welcome back @MIKE-G. I am still watching closely, with a new ISP now so soon when I have time to join, I will try to rejoin and to stay connected. Fingers crossed! This is a nice location and the airport looks even better with orthos from what I recall (I flew there, uhm, maybe 2 years ago in the x737-800). Good journeys everybody, I'll check back soon. ostkamp
Hello Pilots, I started my flight with a B737-800X "Zibo mod" from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City, VVTS) to Danang (VVDN) and then had a second leg from there to Hanoi (VVNB). The flight got caculated using Simbrief this time and I also used it´s fuel calculations with some extra reserve. The time was tweaked by 2 hours, I turned the clock back because on initial load it became clear darkness would kick in very soon. Requesting the better pushback service ... and had an engine start while being pushed. Taking off Saigon. Din05 had joined a bit late and thus took an F35 fighter to catch up later. Danang in sight! Due to wind conditions I had to land from the "wrong" side, meaning I had to overfly the airport first, then kind of an U-turn and come back which required extra time. After only a short break and refueling I took off again for the second leg to Hanoi. As can be seen here already sunset was kicking in. Since I departed South due to the wind conditions, I had to turn around and overfly the airport once more. The cloud plugin became creative here. The clouds became even thicker and I came into a thunderstorm with lightning and rain on approach to Hanoi. Even had to activate the wipers. I was aiming for runway 11R. The FMC had turned me so closely that I could not setup ILS in time, so I went for a visual night landing. Visibility was ok. The landing went not too well since I had trouble to activate the reverser. On first try I applied regular throttle and the aircraft lifted off again a bit causing us to land on the nosewheel at 2nd touchdown. But no one was hurt. Got parked. JohnBray
Bit of a nostalgia trip to start with: took a British Army Westland Scout from Shek Kong airfield down to the old Kai Tak airport. Heading up Route Twisk but the screeching death bus coming over from Tsuen Wan doesn't seem to run any more. Islands coming into view as Tai Mo Shan is cleared Long leisurely dim-sum in stinkies market area before the next leg Took the Concorde to Hanoi, . . followed by a Vietnamese Air Force Su-27. available for crowd control - but not needed because everyone was behaving themselves 😊
Skylark2992
Thanks for sharing PIREPs so far pilots, good to read. I have two small questions as I am now back to flying X-Plane 10 a bit (away with work, hiatus, and other things): In the X-Plane 11 demo, can you fly other aircraft that are X-Plane 11 compatible? Also, can you try other plugins during the demo to see if they they work. I am aware of the 30-minute time limit and location restrictions, but I really want to try a specific X-Plane 11 aircraft during that demo to get a better 'feel' for the sim. Any help is greatly appreciated, as always! Thank you.
Kumiankka
Just one flight this time, 787 Dreamliner from Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi. Departure from KLIA Somewhere around the border of Cambodia and Laos, the FMS was missing a waypoint and started looping me around back south. I got back on course by switching to radio navigation for the rest of the flight. On arrival in Hanoi, there were thunderclouds everywhere, and with very frequent lightning strikes too. Naturally this made for quite an exciting approach. As I emerged from the clouds on short final, it became apparent that the ILS for runway 11L was quite a bit misaligned. I made some quick course corrections to avoid landing on the wrong runway. Touching down, a bit further down the runway than intended due to the last minute maneuvering. Made it down nonetheless, thanks to a long runway and reverse thrust. As I headed for the ramp, constant lightning strikes were still going off in every direction. cyl8
@skylark2992 I believe so. It’s full functioning demo that will stop accepting inputs after timeout. I seem to recall that it would pop up and ask for license key once demo is timed out. Everything worked normally before that. For example I was testing a mod for DF as350 and downloaded xp11 to test. Thanks cyl8, I will give it a go this week. I wish the demo gave more than 30 minutes, as this is very little time to actually test anything but oh well.
