Kumiankka
link to fly-in index thread Quote On Sunday, October 4th it's time to head for yet another different corner of the world, specifically Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, served by Julius Nyerere International Airport (HTDA). This will be our second visit to Tanzania, following an earlier one to Kilimanjaro Int'l in 2016 - well worth (re)visiting as well. Two runways are available, but only the main runway 05/23 is capable of accommodating heavy airliners, with ILS available for the 05 approach alone. Have a nice trip - safari njema! New pilots are always welcome, read the guide below by @bootsie to get started: How to connect to X-FlightServer Be considerate towards your fellow pilots, and above all, have fun! Quintao
I haven't tried the sceneries below yet, but the pictures look promising and both are at a good distance from HTDA (less than 400nm for the first and less than 200nm for the second )
ghun1
I was going to fly from Addis Ababa, HAAB, but now I might choose one of the above. I hope I now have Swift working, but difficult to test. One question - how do you get the airline logo onto your call sign on the map? Is that related to swift or not?
cyl8
HKJK is one of past fly in location! no wonder it looked familiar

Hi Gary, Where did you find the swift instructions for connecting to x-flightserver.net? In there I could only find the xlvap client for download. Thanks! smad
Went on the server map by chance and was surprised to see such a crowd doing the fly-in after all these years! I did join in but left many holes in the ground on final approach to HTDA....🤫 Bit rusty now on XP11 and not getting on well with the 738...
Kumiankka
Welcome back @smad, long time no see! Indeed we did have a surprisingly big crowd this time, and almost everyone arriving at the same time too! Actually had to fly an entire circuit round a holding pattern this time. My starting point was Kilimanjaro International Airport (the eponymous mountain visible in the background) Flying Riviere's freeware Dash 8, it took me only about 10 minutes from logging on to get airborne, these simpler freeware planes don't require so much work to get them started, and the runway wasn't so busy at HTKJ either compared to the more popular starting point of Nairobi. Mount Kilimanjaro was still visible from quite a distance away as I headed south for Dar es Salaam. I was still ahead of most of the pack at this point, but the faster jets were catching up quickly. I was #4 in line for landing as I arrived above HTDA. The holding pattern gave me some nice views of the landings, including Dino and Quintao here. Next in line was CS110, seen here vacating the runway, followed by myself. Although I tried to keep my speed up during the approach, the Dash 8 was still slow compared to Chaser's larger jet, seen in the background circling to increase separation. I logged back on a few minutes later in the DC-3, and the airport was still just as busy. Dino and Ostkamp were just taking off for a short hop to nearby Zanzibar, coincidentally my filed destination too. I spent a few minutes holding short for more traffic, and then took off to join them. Although the city center was filled with just generic X-Plane buildings, these have been getting better in recent sim versions. I arrived in Zanzibar just behind Dino and Ostkamp, close enough to watch their landings while flying my visual circuit. There was a lot of crosswind, leading to some tricky rudder work in the old taildragger. I made it down safely, but used up plenty of runway.
Quintao
This weekend's fly in allowed for some nice close by freeware scenery. Chas and I agree to fly our of Moi International airport in Mombasa HKMO for this short flight to Dar Es Salaam HTDA. My choice of aircraft was the PC-12, starting the day from the GA ramp at the airport, which had Mombasa skyline as background. @CHASMAN2014 was flying a 737-800, which can be seen on the picture above, at Gate 1 of the main terminal, or in more detail in the picture below. Took off from RWY 15 at HKMO which flies right about Mombasa's port. Was cruising at 15,500ft when flew over Zanzibar, a popular destination during this weekend. After passing Zanzibar, started to plan my arrival. From the map it was becoming clear that it would be a busy fly in. Even though we didn't have an ATC, we were able to coordinate, thank you all for allowing me to land first! Followed by Dino5, Chas and then Kumi. Dar Es Salaam, DV 112.7 VOR can be seen below right in front of the RWY05. Landed and proceeded to the GA Ramp to watch everyone's arrival. As I was close to my reserved parking on the VIP area, Dino5 was making into the ramp on a 737. As I parked he was taxing towards the main terminal. This scenery had, by coincidence, another PC-12 also parked in the same area, not as detailed as the Carenado's. Watched from this location as @CHASMAN2014 landed on his 737-800 and @Kumiankka on his Dash 8. Both had great landings! Could also see other's on the final for RWY 05. Great turn out! Have a great week all!
ghun1
I set off mfor a long flight from Adis Ababa (HAAB), Ethiopia in the magknight 787-900. It seems like a nice aircraft but certainly needs some work to get everything working. I decided to fill it up to full, but that turned out to be my undoing eventually (see later). Good weather, and some interesting cloud layers along the way. Not so much to see scenery-wise though as its all default tiles. descended into misty conditions and found it hard to spot the runway (I did have the ILS tuned in but for some reason did not use it very well). My first attempt saw me too high too fast so I went around. My second attempt was better but I still should have gone around, as I might have made it were it not for being overweight for a landing, where I needed around -200 fpm for a safe landing. The gear did not hold and I splattered myself on the runway with engines burning. I was trying out Swift for the first real trial online, and was pleased it worked. Especially as I had live traffic and traffic global running too (you can tell on the first screenshot though I was careful to disable their TCAS reports). Chaser showed up as the correct CSL - a B767. However we both tried to re-file flightplans with different aircraft and even tried logging out and back into the flightserver, to no effect. Chaser remained a 767 and I apparently looked like an ERJ. So Swift is working, but CSL problems still arise and seem worse than ever as it does not seem easy to file as another aircraft from the same session. We will have to work out how to do it. And I still do not know how airline logos show up on the map when you click on an aircraft (mine refuses to do so).
cyl8
@ghun1 was there instruction about making LiveTraffic to work with Swift? They are exclusive on mine... Thanks!

No Never found instructions describing this I just gave it a go knowing the limitations that I had found on line. Rather than mutually exclusive operation per se, I think it is only TCAS that is affected. So I disabled TCAS in Traffic Global, and selected something like "TCAS only when asked" in live traffic. There was no live traffic at the time I flew into HTDA. Now I have installed an update to live traffic so I will see what happens this week. You see traffic around you but not on TCAS. If you must have a TCAS representation of aircraft in your own cockpit instrumentation I think you have to choose: AI, live traffic, traffic global or X-IvAp (or swift or other on line server). Well, thats my understanding anyway. I'd be happy to know more or be corrected.
ostkamp
Hi guys, I was flying out of Nairobi Airport (HKJK) with an X-Crafts Embraer ERJ-145 XR jet. Here is a total of the airport: It is a bit difficult to find a suitable livery with the X-Crafts jets since they are all located in the same folder, however the liveries often only fit for a specific model although they are generally listed in the overview even if they do not fit for the currently selected model. Lining up for runway 06. Applying full throttle ... The weather was a bit cloudy, but ok. I used to fly via VOR KV (Kilimanjaro) and then VORDME DV (Dar es Salaam), after passing it turning right for crosswind and then heading back for an ILS approach into runway 05. Had no issues and an acceptable landing according to the plugin. A couple of other pilots already were parked there. Nice scenery even with some larger building in the background. 49TE landing a single engine (turbo?) prop here. Merlin coming in here in his 4 engine jet. Dino5 and I were heading out again for a visit to Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume Intl. (HTZA) airport with the Aerobask Pipistrel Panthera. Landed ok there and got parked. Shortly thereafter @Kumiankka landed. Called it a day here. See you on next Sunday. I will most likely join either super early or very late because of Formula 1 at 12 UTC.
