853rd fly-in: SESC Pantanal Airport, Brazil (SIPK)

Next Sunday, May 16th it's time for another visit to Brazil, more specifically to the famous wetlands of the Pantanal, and SESC Pantanal Airport (SIPK) which will be our gateway to this unique area. In addition to this already smallish airport with a single runway of just under 5000 feet, the linked scenery package by @ruifo contains 11 other, smaller bush airfields around the Pantanal region waiting to be explored.

Great choice! 

I'd suggest the following scenery to complement the Pantanal one, also made available by @ruifo.

Campo Grande being the largest city in the 'vincinity' of the Pantanal which as the name suggests is a large swamp half of the year, from November 'til about May.

Another memorable Fly-In today, among an amazing scenery for bush flight. I apologize for the above the average number of photos, due to such a variety of nice sites. 

Since I was staying at SBBE - Belém, I had to consider a somewhat tight plan to reach our destination, and for first leg I had to speed up things, with the help of a somewhat fictional but very beautiful bird from Varig, to perform around 850 miles towards Brasilia .

Cleared at Belém as scheduled.

The scenery I choosen for Brasilia wasn't working properly, and for obvious reasons had no time to troubleshoot, so I went to another one from the ,org, this time with success. And also changed to the freeware D328, with the colours of ONE - Avianca Brasil, to perform the second leg towards SIPK - Hotel Sesc Pantanal.

Since I was cleared to RWY29, almost on the opposite side, had the chance to watch some nice details of this scenery, made available by @axmiha (share the link below if someone wants to give a try).

After a lunch brake, returned to perform the scenery walk around the very nice sceneries available on this wonderful package

Started with the Thranda Kodiak with the local "correios" colors. Great aircraft for the dirt and grass destinations presented today.

The clock was moving faster, so despite the good performance of this bird, had to speed up a bit, so a change to one of my favourites, the Carenado DO228 with Sevenair colours. This aircraft is also very capable on tight and bumpy runways.

And for the return flight, took the C-47 Skytrain. To lift it from the bumpy runway sure was a challenge, but the aircraft deserve the effort, it is a real beauty.

Started cold and dark on the Mooney Ovation 2 out of the General Aviation apron of Campo Grande SBCG, on the scenery mentioned above, which just shy of 300nm from SIPK.

Taxied to RWY 06 on SBCG and could see the main terminal at a distance and some Latam planes on it, courtesy of TrafficGlobal. The skyline of Camp Grande could also be seen at a distance during the taxi.

Took off from RWY 06 and flew runway heading over Campo Grande before heading to SIPK. Once at cruise altitude of 12,500ft the flight was over the farm lands of west Brazil.

After about 90 minutes, it was easy to spot the SESC Pantanal Hotel RWY 01 given the bright colors of the airfield on a sea of green. I was arriving behind @ghun1, but Gary decided to fly around the runway once before landing, so I ended up landing first. Visual approach and landing were as expected on the Mooney with the speed breaks deployed to bleed speed. Finding a place to park on the busy apron was more of an issue.

After parking, group picture with @CHASMAN2014, @Kumiankka, @Vega66, @rajo and Merlin among others at SIPK. Although the rendering were not ideal, I need to dedicate some time to install the proper CSLs.

Had a short break and changed to the PC-12 for a flight to Sao Paulo Congonhas airport, taking off from RWY 19 flying over the Cuiaba river and the main hotel building with wind turbines from the great scenery by @ruifo.

By this time everyone was visiting the many  fields available on the scenery.

Indeed, Pantanal is a water-rich environment with lots of resorts and recreation facilities, and many of the landing sites are side by side with the water, including some spots with water-landing facilities. Here some previews available from the scenery.

For me this fly-in was an experiment that luckily went well, as I had finally updated to X-Plane 11.5 to try out some new payware aircraft. After all this time I figured maybe the bugs have been worked out from the new version already, plus staying back on 11.4 would've meant missing out on a lot of other future add-ons too. And this turned out to be the case, at least for now, with no sim crashes or compatibility issues.

My starting point was the Embraer factory airfield at Gavião Peixoto, flying the Aerobask Phenom 300.

Brazil is a huge country and the distances were long enough even for this closer starting point, a little over an hour and a half away. If I had picked our last Brazilian fly-in airport in Recife instead, I might still be enroute! Although there were no navaids around SESC Pantanal Airport to assist with the approach, the square patch of photo scenery made the airport easy to spot even if this felt a little cheaty.

The runway length here was not that far from the minimums of the Phenom 300, but my first landing in the aircraft went smoothly. I parked on the tarmac for a coffee break before starting my VFR tour of the region.

By the time I got back, there was quite a line forming up for the single runway! I believe this was Chas in front of me, Vega66 on the other taxiway, and Rajo taxiing to join us third in line. My choice of aircraft was another first try for a new payware plane, the JustFlight Cessna 152.

 I had planned a little circuit tour of some of the smaller bush airfields, some of which were too small and obscure to even be on Skyvector. The first of them in line was the gravel strip of Hotel Baiazinha (SWWF) where I made the silly mistake of landing on a bumpy dirt road rather than the actual runway, and what's more didn't even notice my mistake until I had taken off again! Notice how that's NOT the runway ahead of me, the actual runway is partly hidden behind the jungle, connecting to that yellowish forest trail on the left.

Unsurprisingly it was a very bumpy landing, and the Cessna slid around on the muddy road surface quite a bit.

It wasn't until I took off again to head for my next waypoint, that I spotted the actual runway here!

My next stop was the gravel airfield of Porto Indio near the Bolivian border. Meanwhile I was learning to adjust the throttle and mixture on the C152 correctly, as my first hop over from SESC Pantanal had burned an incredible amount of fuel, forcing me to refuel early. I had no GPS on this plane either, and no navaids nearby enough to be usable, so this was good practice for visual navigation as well.

For Porto Indio I decided to only make a touch 'n go rather than land to a full stop. There was plenty of crosswind, and once I corrected for it using the rudder the impressive audio simulation in the C152 treated me to a nice wind effect caused by the sideslip. The control surfaces also had these faint little sound effects they made when moving, something I noticed while making the control check initially.

My route further south took me past another location with custom scenery, Fazenda Diamandore I believe.

My next stop was the southernmost of the airfields covered in Ruifo's custom scenery, Fazenda Jatobazinho (SIJO). The place resembled a zoo rather than an airfield with all the animals around!

After filling up the fuel tanks once more, I set course back for SESC Pantanal Airport.

It was already getting late, so I headed back for SESC Pantanal, following the river as long as it took me in the right direction before striking out across the marshland.

The skies had been mostly clear up until now, but low clouds were gathering, forcing me lower to stay VFR and lowering the effective visibility too. Luckily the VOR signal from Cuiaba came into range at this point, so I had something other than the Mk.1 eyeball with which to locate the airport.

it was too bumpy for me, I scrapped the propeller. I don't remember, was it too bumpy or did I forget to extend the landing gear? Immediate repair cost 4000$, REP also has a small economic simulation built in

I set off from Pantanal Fazenda Jatobazinho, SIJO, in the relatively newly transformed Mu-2 from X-Aviation (wha.... 😱 ?). Some people with all their pets were around to give me a good send off (or maybe just to see if I could get airborne before hitting the trees, which were plentiful all round).

Lift off went fine despite some peculiarities with torque, throttle and prop control.

My flight plan was to fly over many of the small airfields included in the recommended download as possible. I may not have gotten these in quite the right order!

sometime around now I tried talk to Quintao and discovered my press-to-talk key doubled as the go to beta range for the props in the Mu-2. An exciting few seconds but soon back in control and on track. Good acceleration and control response in this version makes it a joy to fly.

very pink scenery makes me wonder what it is - flowers? SOme of it extends into the water ways so maybe not?

passed over the filed at 3000 feet and made a circuit to land, watching quintao come in ahead of me.

On landing I got the usual vision of large airliners due to some odd CSL mapping. Thanks to the instructions from Ostkamp earlier, I soon changed them to give the correct aircraft making a huge difference. That's Kumi's C152 (OK for the CSL), CHAS in a Kodiak (had to change it) and RAJO in an SF260 (had to change that too). DO not understand why, when they give the correct code for CSL and I have the CSL, it is not mapped correctly.

Another nice  place to fly. Given the jungle of trees everywhere I am not too surprised there are so many small airfields, or else there would be nowhere to go with any emergency no matter how small.

PS still no idea why I got a graphics problem last week. I have done nothing but take quintao's advice and turned down the objects for fly-ins. Maybe because for fly-ins I also run Swift and teamspeak (as well as Active Sky)? No problems when I am not on line.

Hi guys,

you made the most out of this fly-in, great reports and shots 🙂

I was out of luck on last Sunday, I had to fight against my PC for about an hour or so since X-Plane refused to load and just got stuck multiple times on load. I tried a lot from choosing other aircraft, other location, killing the process via TaskManager etc. Finally I rebooted the whole box.

Once I got it up and running I started a few flights with FS-Economy, first from Pocone (SWPL) to Jaciara (SWJC). Due to bad job planning I took only one of the 2 passengers for that tour with me, instead FS-Economy loaded other passengers to another far more distant airport where I had reserved some flights for. 😞

At least in the week before the fly-in I could fly a lot with the Bombardier Challenger 300. This seems to be the best option to make money in FS Economy in order to create savings for purchasing an own virtual aircraft. I tend to check for airports where this aircraft type is available for rent and have a closer look at the available flights. Flights with $20000 or above are the good ones and allow to earn a lot, up to 14000-16000 per flight. I takes about 2-2.5 hours to fly them. Cessna 172 are priced about v$160-170k, Baron 58 at v$330k and Pilatus PC-12 at a whopping v$700k not to speak of jets like Embraer ERJ 145 at v$5.5 millions or better to just give an impression.

Nice airport, but I still have no explanation for the pink colors all around this airport. Is this a bug? Are there flower fields nearby?
