This upcoming Sunday, December 18th our destination is none other than Hamad International Airport (OTHH) in Doha, Qatar, coinciding not only with Qatar's National Day celebrations but also the finals of the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup. In a bit of morbid irony, the date is further shared with International Migrants Day, commemorating a UN convention on the rights of migrant workers - in stark contrast to allegations of forced labor and various other human rights violations leveled at the football tournament and its organizers. That being said, the fly-ins have never been limited to places with excellent human rights records, although I guess this is one of the clearest examples of that policy in recent history. Free custom scenery is available in the download manager courtesy of @Renair2, and features a lot of impressive scenery detail around the surrounding city, although opinions may vary on the larger-than-usual quantity of static aircraft placed on the taxiways: you may need to go and clean them up in WED if you find them particularly intrusive.

Neat to get some desert flying in this week! I started in Riyadh (OERK) with the ZIBO Boeing 737 eager to see what higher altitude flight looks like in X-Plane 12. Before today the highest altitude I reached was FL240 with the Q400 on my flight into Yellowknife a few weeks ago.

For today's flight SimBrief suggested a cruise at FL350. Skies were clear as a bell although mildly turbulent for most of the trip. I came across a few small clouds towards my top of descent south of Bahrain.

The lighting in 12 seems to have changed slightly since 12.00r4. I'm noticing the eye adaptation more when changing between light and dark scenes and so far I'm liking it. The sky looked particularly spectacular while I was on approach over Doha, just a little past golden hour. The ZIBO seems a little slippery in 12 and required much more time to descend than the FMC and I expected. I took a couple laps around a holding pattern at LADSO to setup for the ILS approach runway 34R. @Quintao and I passed each other at one point and I joined the final right behind him.

The airport is so large you could get lost trying to find your way to parking. Unfortunately I forgot to check the custom scenery and it did not load properly so I got the default scenery instead. From what I could see in the dark it looked pretty good. I followed Quintao since he looked like he knew where to go, haha! It was nice to put the world cup to a location on the map with all of you today. Thanks @Kumiankka for putting it together!

See you next week!

Great match today, one of the best I whatched, congrats to Argentina, who had the skill and determination to win it.

I started today from the other side, Paris, taking some fans that were overbooked from the previous flights. The QTR3046 was the last available flight to get just in time to the show.

Boarding at CDG Terminal 1, recently reopened. This flight usually boards at Gate 22.

image.thumb.jpeg.5738d3638b45c1d65bac57a995a7e7a1.jpeg

Start pushback at exactly 0700z, linning up and taking off at 0714z, for a 06h15m flight towards Doha.

image.thumb.jpeg.ae261828045066e96491654528e8f443.jpeg

First half of the flight caught heavy head winds, being compensated by opposite 60kts tailwinds for the second half.

image.thumb.jpeg.a10e2ec603606c937620d22db22bf558.jpeg

The STAR assigned took several turns, adding around an 100 extra miles to the flight, but in the end everybody managed to get just in time for the match.

@rajo arrived a few minutes later.

image.thumb.jpeg.410c1ddbc097f9848ccba8f54f13ccd7.jpeg

Left the A350 with the maintenance crews, who were preparing the flight for the winning team. and took the long break, up to the end of the first part.

Then returned for a brief helicopter flight around Doha. @Kumiankka was departing on a C17 to the nearby Al Udeid AB. So I made a brief tour around the citiy and also headed there to meet him. The city scenery is very detailed, providing a nice tour.

Landed briefly next to Kumi....

image.thumb.jpeg.b2050a99019f8454b977f7cbe612b3ce.jpeg

... and expedited the return to Doha Hamad, to get in time to follow the final part of the match.  image.thumb.jpeg.1ba9ac1114b03582190caca5be92ea4b.jpeg

Kumi was also returning on a PC12, so we coincided once again for a final snap.

image.thumb.jpeg.00843baf7d1d32206d4c8e0635b16e19.jpeg

Back at the gate, the maintenance crew was still uncertain about what colors to dress for the returning flight. The match had to be decided on the penalty score. In the end... hurrah for Argentina :)

image.thumb.jpeg.6e492111ec047a69627510a7ff7ccf1e.jpeg

And so, for the final flight nothing less than a 7500nm flight to Buenos Aires.... if all goes well, hope to reach SEAZ tomorrow.

Wish you all a great week ahead and a wonderful christmas eve.

My PIREP today will be short, almost as short as my flight. I started from Muscat OOMS aboard the Diamond DA-62 by Aerobask on X-Plane 12.

AA-X-Plane-afc-Lj4-Nalh.jpg

Taxied to RWY 08-R for departure.

AB-X-Plane-Q8-Ww3-MNydj.jpg

AC-X-Plane-l-BN3c-Qr-Wr-A.jpg

Took off and performed a 180 turn while climbing over the airport to head West towards Doha.

AD-X-Plane-1t-Z1if-Gmoe.jpg

Climbing was very slow on the Diamond DA-62 and since I was experiencing 60+ knots head wind, I decided to abort the flight and return to Muscat and change planes.

AE-X-Plane-WULUNYJQxp.jpg

Switched to the Phenom 300 also by Aerobask, this plane had a lot better performance climbing and face the headwinds getting to Doha.

Cruised at FL340 inbound to OOTH.

Descended during the sunset.

While I followed the ILS 34R into OOTH, I performed a visual landing since the weather permitted.

Taxied to the gates on the opposite side of the airport where @Vega66 was already parked on his lunch break.

It was already night when @F5Chaser landed and parked as per the group picture below.

Next was Merlin exiting the runway on this last airfield picture with the skyline in the background.

The year is coming to an end, next fly-in will be the last in 2022. What a fantastic year!

My Citation X, which I bought a few weeks ago for 1 million, was in Nagpur, India, when Kumi announced the target. I thought: This is possible!

image.thumb.jpeg.09a4c80869dea0a73fbb8003a44c6d4e.jpeg

Shayba, Saudi Arabia: ready for takeoff. I had unfortunately only 3 passengers, but fueled for twice the distance, therefore earned nothing. OTHH still does not exist in FSE, I had to enter the old airport OTBD

then I went by helicopter in search of the soccer stadium where in a few minutes the final would be kicked offimage.thumb.jpeg.c54841bea6596ed8911eea7de9024515.jpeg

I found it and landed in the middle of the lawn. Then, when the game started, which was really quite remarkable and possibly not a simulation, I had to go offline. Congratulations Argentina, congratulations Messi! Happy landings!

Nice FIFA livery @Vega66, thought you might have been flying that one! Great last minute edit too 😄

777-300ER - 2022-12-18 14.02.59.jpg

I flew a similar-looking livery but a different plane for my first flight, the FlightFactor 777-300 from Lahore, Pakistan. Apparently the FIFA special livery had been originally planned for the A350 that Vega flew, but due to some kind of legal dispute with Airbus over maintenance issues the special livery ended up on a 777 instead.

777-300ER - 2022-12-18 14.05.08.jpg

The sun was already setting in Pakistan when I took off, so this was going to be a mostly night flight.

777-300ER - 2022-12-18 14.15.51.jpg

Cruising at FL390 and staying up there for about three hours

777-300ER - 2022-12-18 17.29.44.jpg

Trying to get the 777's autopilot to cooperate with the ILS approach was an adventure in itself, especially since the newer Hamad Airport was missing from its database. I ended up switching to a different runway after overshooting the turn to 34R, and falling back on hand-flying the plane down while the autopilot disconnect alarm refused to shut up.

777-300ER - 2022-12-18 17.40.33.jpg

Finally I made it to the terminal, where @Quintao, @Vega66 and @CHASMAN2014 were parked. With almost all the other gates taken up by static aircraft, I had to circle around a while to find an empty spot.

C-17_Globemaster_III - 2022-12-18 18.05.46.jpg

Taking off again from 34R in the Virtavia C-17

Climbing out past the Doha skyline…

…and turning south again to set up for an approach to the nearby Al Udaid airbase

Landing at OTBH

C-17_Globemaster_III - 2022-12-18 18.24.46.jpg

Vega dropped by in a helicopter to say hi

PC21 - 2022-12-18 18.31.26.jpg

Another Qatar Emiri Air Force plane available for X-Plane was the Pilatus PC-21 here.

PC21 - 2022-12-18 18.37.54.jpg

Vega was still buzzing around Hamad Airport in his helo when I got back there for a flyby

PC21 - 2022-12-18 18.39.30.jpg

In the circuit for 34L…

PC21 - 2022-12-18 18.42.35.jpg

…and touching down

PC21 - 2022-12-18 18.46.17.jpg

Vega again landed his helicopter close by.

VertiCopter - 2022-12-18 18.54.30.jpg

A VTOL tour of the city sounded like a good idea, so I switched to the fictional Verticopter to embark on one of my own. No local livery for this one so one of the default liveries would have to do.

VertiCopter - 2022-12-18 18.58.04.jpg

Passing the old Doha Airport and the harbor

VertiCopter - 2022-12-18 19.02.54.jpg

A quick stop at a waterfront helipad - went looking for the Lusail football stadium further north afterwards, but the scenery detail didn't seem to extend that far

VertiCopter - 2022-12-18 19.13.19.jpg

On the way back to the airport, I made sure to perform this week's stunt challenge at the harbor

VertiCopter - 2022-12-18 19.16.15.jpg

Landing back on the ramp at OTHH

A380 - 2022-12-18 19.39.51.jpg

Starting one last flight for the evening, a short hop to Dubai in the A380

A380 - 2022-12-18 19.40.31.jpg

Taking off from the 34R direction was basically the only option, since the other way was blocked by many more static planes on the taxiways. Luckily the winds were favorable this time.

A380 - 2022-12-18 19.45.09.jpg

Climbing out of Doha and setting course for Dubai across the gulf

Starting the approach just over half an hour later (with the big football match just having ended)

My final landing of the evening at Dubai Int'l

Merry Christmas to everyone, and see you, if not next week, then next year!
