The Manufacturers Tour continues on next Sunday, January 29th, and our destination then is Linköping/Saab Airport, Sweden (ESSL). As the name implies, this is the home base of the Swedish aircraft manufacturer Saab, known for the Saab 340 and Saab 2000 turboprops as well as various military aircraft including the Draken, Viggen and Gripen. No custom scenery is required this time, the default Gateway stuff is probably the most up to date version you can find, but if you haven't upgraded to XP12 yet with its built-in winter effects, then a winter add-on such as the SAM Seasons plug-in is recommended to get the best and most authentic winter experience. If you're continuing the tour in a heavier aircraft, also take note of the runway length: at only 7000 feet combined with the possibility of icy runways, you may need to consider the possibility of diverting to a nearby larger airport such as Skavsta (ESKN) or Arlanda (ESSA).

As for the following week's stop on the tour, it'll be a BAE Systems testing facility in the UK, again a little under 700 nautical miles away. Those in light aircraft requiring refueling may find EKEB Esbjerg, Denmark a convenient rest stop.

Updated tour schedule:

January 8th: HAL Airport, Bengaluru, India (VOBG)
Optional refueling stop: Mary International Airport, Turkmenistan (UTAM)
January 15th: Zhukovsky International Airport, Moscow, Russia (UUBW)
Optional refueling stop: Bryansk, Russia (UUBP)
January 22nd: Hostomel "Antonov-2" Airport, Kyiv, Ukraine (UKKM)
Optional refueling stop: Kaunas, Lithuania (EYKA)
January 29th: Linköping/Saab Airport, Sweden (ESSL)
Optional refueling stop: Esbjerg, Denmark (EKEB)
February 5th: ????

Have a nice trip - trevlig resa!

Greetings, all

Started today from Kaunas, exactly where I left last week, to perform the next leg of this awesome plane factory tour.

 1624282051_X-PlaneScreenshot2023_01.29-11_03_10_39.thumb.jpg.63f7fd3248760dc18b187335de74b470.jpg

The weather was cold and snowy, which required a 20 minute Ground de-icing. Also the number of passangers and luggage was limited due to the runway constraints at destination, the boarding was quick.
image.thumb.jpeg.e10fc85b0991539c1b9bb569c56a9844.jpeg

Taxied and departed without delays.

image.thumb.jpeg.1c4e8c98284e11a8a43f5e6c2b0a9c78.jpeg

Picked some turbulence and strong headwinds, but aside from a small delay, it was an uneventful ride.

image.thumb.jpeg.3739285f3c4795e1bd5b04eec02988da.jpeg

Catching strong headwinds at Linköping/Saab, but the visibility was good and the absence of ice expedited a butter landing, with the aircraft stopping even before the first exit. Nevertheless, proceeded taxing to the end of the runway, parking at the Western Apron.

image.thumb.jpeg.934e4a8ad24f264595aa93925d49b466.jpeg

Then, a switch to a Heli, to perform a tour around the premises. Hailed @ghun1, parking at the Eatern apron

And @gordoxproenca touching down.an a A321 Neo

Many pilots were close to the short final at our destination, so expedited the return to join them for some group photos.

Here overing around Gordo and @Quintao just before touching down.

image.thumb.jpeg.51896490bfc30092c4f406854a009a23.jpeg

Shortly after many pilots were filling all the slots and even further... Here a Pan from the tower, with @Big-IN AkA Dino5, Gordo, Quintao, @MerlinEng, @rajo, @ostkamp and @CHASMAN2014

 image.thumb.jpeg.0a4b8115b215fcda04e2eb2d207e6bd5.jpeg

And another at the apron, this time with Rajo, Chas and @Kumiankka

image.thumb.jpeg.33cb1601dffcab9f4a7388ae239bf257.jpeg

Finally time to perform the leg to Esbjerg. The A321 so far has performed flawless. The IAE 2533 smaller engines of the older A321 standard configuration are more responsive than bigger ones of the NEO XLR version, which I find easier to get used to especially on the approaches and landings in smaller runways. That led to another smooth flight, safely ending at Esbjerg.

image.thumb.jpeg.7c0d68eb18548abc5c4aeb898316011f.jpeg

And that's all for today, looking forward to join next sunday. Until then, wish you all an awesome week.

My route for this fly-in was over 700nm long, which meant almost 2h from take off at UKBB to touch down in ESSL aboard the C750 Citation X. From the picture below, I counted 12 callsigns, great participation! @Kumiankka was taking a different route, over Poland, likely more realistic given the present situation.

AF-chrome-GEp-Sw-CCLT2.jpg

Taxied to RWY 18L at UKBB for an immediate take-off.

Climbed to a cruising altitude of FL420.

 AD-A8d-Flx-J6vu.jpg

Some interesting cloud formation mid-flight, seems like a bug in the algorithm in my opinion.

AE-1cz9-Re-NNUX.jpg

The approach was via instruments given the limited visibility.

AH-CMp0b503b1.jpg

The visibility improved once below 2,500ft. @ghun1 had just taken off for a scenic flight around the vicinity while I was on my 5nm final.

AI-v-Mzrba-Bfo-F.jpg

Something didn't look right, too many antennae in the ILS path! I disengaged the autopilot and held altitude until after them, forcing me to land further on the runway than planned.

AJ-Io-Kp8-NZ5n7.jpg

AK-Pa9kvva-Ix-U.jpg

My CSL for @Vega66 looked a lot different from his great pictures above!

AL-vk2e-NSW0-Bz.jpg

With many arrivals in a short period, I went to the RWY 29 to check the scenery feature.

AM-z-Gx-Zvonoa-H.jpg

Meanwhile many landed, including @rajo on a heavy bird.

Group picture with @ostkamp on final, @Big-IN Dino 5 clearing the RWY and @CHASMAN2014 holding short at a distance. Rajo, Merlin, Vega and @gordoxproenca on the ramp. It was getting crowded!

Looking forward to continue with the tour!

Looks like Kaunas was a popular starting point, probably should have started from there myself too: while the Saab 340 was quite capable of flying direct (even on the more realistic route around Belarusian airspace like @Quintao noted), this made for a flight of over 3 hours and put me well behind most of the pack!

SF34 - 2023-01-29 13.52.08.jpg

Ran into some initial engine troubles during my first departure attempt from Hostomel, something always tends to go wrong with the cold start routine in the Carenado S340 (or I'm not doing it right) but reloading the aircraft file seemed to fix this.

SF34 - 2023-01-29 17.04.57.jpg

The sun was just setting as I descended through the cloud deck for the ILS approach to Linköping.

SF34 - 2023-01-29 17.15.29.jpg

Vacating the runway for @rajo and @gordoxproenca, and taxiing to join the others on the ramp

se-fim - 2023-01-29 17.33.59.jpg

Having spent all the daylight hours on the first flight, I used the usual cheat of turning the clock ahead to next morning, before taking off in the tiny Saab Safari. If the aircraft model looks simple, that's because it's an ancient X-Plane 7 model run through various converters!

Entering the pattern at Linköping Malmen

se-fim - 2023-01-29 17.38.53.jpg

The runway 26 approach featured some power lines to watch out for, and a convenient highway for any last minute emergency landings (maybe in case you forget the carb heat)

safir - 2023-01-29 17.48.30.jpg

Heading back in the Saab Safir, another ancient X-Plane 7 model - and buzzing the "Tornet" apartment building on the way

Circling above the city center…

safir - 2023-01-29 17.52.47.jpg

…and returning to ESSL runway 29 again

J35 - 2023-01-29 18.05.32.jpg

Next on the list were the various Saab fighter jets, starting with the good old J35 Draken.

J35 - 2023-01-29 18.07.24.jpg

Unfortunately the Draken was barely flyable anymore, and the combination of gusty winds and low framerates made matters even worse. In fact, I didn't even make it off the ground on my first try, what you're seeing here is the second one…

J35 - 2023-01-29 18.11.38.jpg

The landing didn't go too well either, the plane turned into the wind at an almost 90 degree angle before smacking onto the runway hard and collapsing the landing gear.

VIGGEN37 - 2023-01-29 18.18.51.jpg

The JA37 Viggen was luckily far more stable in XP11.

VIGGEN37 - 2023-01-29 18.22.57.jpg

Dropping some fireworks…

VIGGEN37 - 2023-01-29 18.28.50.jpg

…and visiting the nearby E4 highway as an improvised landing spot

SAAB_39E_Gripen - 2023-01-29 18.43.32.jpg

Next, I loaded up the even newer JAS 39 Gripen just as @ManofMac arrived to perform an impressive crosswind landing

Visiting the Stockholm city center and the famous Ericsson Globe

SAAB_39E_Gripen - 2023-01-29 19.20.06.jpg

Overran the icy runway on return to ESSL… that reverse thrust capability on the Viggen would've been handy here!

T-7A - 2023-01-29 19.40.42.jpg

Final flight for the evening, dumping some more flares in the Boeing-Saab T-X Red Hawk prototype

T-7A - 2023-01-29 19.41.50.jpg

Joining downwind once more…

…and landing (in one piece this time) to call it a day

Hi,

since i had done the tour to Kaunas (ESSL) already last time, I could start from here for a tour distance quite suitable for the Saab 340. I was using the LES Saab 340 model with great system depth. Also found a nice livery for the Swedish Airforce somewhere.

Weather conditions had some snow blowing over the apron ...

ximage001.jpg

The auto-start system is quite helpful and really executes the steps in the right way step by step. So there is no sudden "start with running" engines, it engages everything smoothly from cold & dark. I should finally learn to do it on my own one day ...
ximage002.jpg

The FMC plan got imported from Little Navmap into the GNS 530, altitude got setup for 24000 ft which is near the service ceiling.
ximage003.jpg

Took off from runway 26, then turned right onto track via TOTRA and GELDA. For safety de-icing was activated.
ximage004.jpg

ximage005.jpg

Reaching the Swedish coastline.
ximage006.jpg

Some fog started to kick in, but nothing serious.
ximage007.jpg

Landing got done using ILS for runway 29.
ximage008.jpg

It was a hard landing but don´t know the exact reasons for it.
ximage009.jpg

Quite a lot of the group was present at nearly the same time, I was counting at least 8 with @ghun1, @CHASMAN2014, @Big-IN aka Din05, @Quintao, KLM321RA, @MerlinEng, @Vega66 and SAS7126. @Kumiankka was missing out while still on long-haul with the slow Saab 340 and arrived a lot later.
ximage010.jpg

After cake break I departed again now using my most flown aircraft, the Aerobask Embraer Legacy 650.
ximage011.jpg

It was really a nice sunset trip to the South and then North East via ESSL ABAMA N850 RASMU M736 SIMEG L987 MALIV M611 CDA M602 ROBUS L983 SIVSU EKEB.
ximage012.jpg

ximage013.jpg

ximage014.jpg

Here as well some haze kicked in.
ximage015.jpg

ximage016.jpg

Thanks to the warning systems I could lower the gears just in time.
ximage017.jpg

ILS fully aligned for runway 26, Esbjerg (EKEB).
ximage018.jpg

ximage019.jpg

ximage020.jpg

Managed to get a "Butter" landing this time.
ximage021.jpg

ximage022.jpg

Got parked next to @Big-INs Tu-444.
ximage023.jpg

After some 4 hours of flying I called it a day here.

Meanwhile I also managed to get the new FS-Economy software to work and updated my Swift-Client to the latest Alpha version. Seems to working ok, so far.

I shall meet you in the UK, next Sunday. Have a nice week and happy landings! 🍺

Hello fellow sim pilots, wishing everyone a good week.

Stated my flight from Hostomel Airport in Kyiv, Ukraine in the Cessna Citation X. Taxied to Runway 33 for the trip to Linköping/Saab Airport, Sweden.

My preflight took longer than expected this week, and I ended up just behind the main pack on departure. Real weather was still to cold for my Phenom, even without that I still encountered some icing conditions during climb.Initially I planned on cruising at FL390. However, there was an 80 knot headwind at FL390. It seemed less at FL430 so I initiated two step climbs, first to FL410, where the wind was 75 knots, and then to FL430 where it dropped to 73 knots. Taking lessons from last week, I planned for more fuel and a higher throttle setting, allowing me to reach M.77 during the flight. I may have to try the Citation X though after reading @Quintao and @CHASMAN2014's PIREPs.

1268700973_phenom300-2023-01-2907_53_43.png.thumb.JPEG.a7e5aac8a33c7d174939801f76608320.JPEG71626060_phenom300-2023-01-2908_45_36.png.thumb.JPEG.c71f5b0b82c2411c2537679286fa3ec8.JPEG

@rajo taxiing to runway 26 for departure at Kaunas. And @Big-IN passing me at Mach 2 in his TU-444.

Nearing top of descent the winds increased again to 80 knots at FL430. As others noted, you could not see much of the descent with clouds from FL100 down to about 2500. Which made the tight spacing tricky for those ahead I imagine. There were 5 on final at one time from what I could tell on the map!

442987192_phenom300-2023-01-2909_32_32.png.thumb.JPEG.c80c970f004776c813cce66e04fae669.JPEG140855024_phenom300-2023-01-2909_32_58.png.thumb.JPEG.3953d57c36425377f22a4eee5f11f900.JPEG

For some reason there was a forest of radio towers on short of the threshold. Combined with the strong surface gusts, my zig-zag approach was let's say "unconventional," haha! Still got a smooth landing out of it and rolled to the end for parking with the group.

784844852_phenom300-2023-01-2909_33_09.png.thumb.JPEG.2895ceac231b40bc957e77cd3882c7d2.JPEG387332834_phenom300-2023-01-2909_30_32.png.thumb.JPEG.3d3892c51ca960445ae65e76a57b9af8.JPEG

Looks like we had a good turn out for this one! I love how these tours create traffic at the departure and along the route as well as the destination.

See you next week in the UK!

Well done @ostkamp, I also wanted to put the LES SAAB 34 to use, went back XP11 for this purpose, it started well until I realized I can not control the nose wheel. I pressed the button provided for this purpose, I switched the hydraulics off and on, tried restart aircraft, restart XP11, after 1h I gave up and switched back to XP12.

Hi @rajo that feels strange.

Could you try again after loading aircraft cold & dark and then running auto start from the menu which pops up when moving to right edge of screen (via Gizmo I suppose)?
Just to exclude potential errors on manual startup. It should be one of the lower buttons displayed which starts it.

I am using the LES Saab 340 version 1.6.5 (but have also tested with earlier 1.6.3) on XP 11 Windows 10 based.

The nose wheel stuff is not so well described in the documents but it states that you need to push down the wheel on the left side panel of the pilot and possibly also rotate it after pushing it. For me the push was sufficient although rotate arrows are shown as well for it. There is no visible indication for rotating wheel from inside cockpit however. Maybe rotating is used in real aircraft to actually turn the nose wheels.

I can turn them with my joystick (via the axis which controls rudder, I have to twist my joystick for that).

Here you can find a video where I first try without pushed wheel (rudder moves, without effect on nose wheel) and then after push.
You may need to download video and play locally since Google still reports it is still processing - it´s about 100 MB screen recording.

I loaded aircraft cold & dark and then running auto start, pushed that button, and tried also rotate, but maybe, when I rotate, the button was not pushed. I will try that later ... Of course I am using the latest version 1.6.5
