With just one entry for the special Diwali week of the fly-in lottery, the obvious winner for Sunday, November 12th is @Vega66, whose choice was a revisit to Gilgit, Pakistan (OPGT) after more than 12 years. Judging from his screenshot up there, we have some vastly improved scenery since last time, and I'm hoping to get to enjoy it on a new Mac too, barring any last-minute shipping or setup delays. See Vega's intro below for more info:

 

 
 

The city of Gilgit is at the heart of Pakistan mountain adventures. This small domestic airport is surronded by mountains, and the shortage of NAVAIDS (only one NDB available on the airport) adds even more challenge, and also big fun for VFR lovers. It provides a 5.393 ft long Asphalt runway, not suited for big airliners.  I believe this airport has been visited on Fly-In around 2011.

The 2015 custom scenery available by @myb still provides great enhancement. XP12 users however should not install the custom Mesh, since it doesn't work right. Instead, the Ortho Tile for coordinates +35+074 will enhance the experience. Zoom Level BI 16 should be enough.

The new Mac is finally here! The X-Plane install is taking a bit longer than expected, but I hope to have everything set up in time for a quick test flight tomorrow, followed by my first fly-in on XP12 this Sunday.

You have to be patient and be sure the plain install works well before the next step of trying out scenery and planes. My advice is to move scenery in steps not link to all your existing scenery at once.

Thanks for the good advice @ghun1, that's what I plan on doing. Better start from scratch with the add-ons, especially since some of the old custom scenery may have been made obsolete by the XP12 improvements, and a lot of the older aircraft models might have flight model issues so I'll need to try them on a case by case basis.

Update:
Looks like I'm now all set for the fly-in on Sunday! The biggest hurdle was getting the Swift client to cooperate with the M3 Mac, the trick was that you need to run XP12 through Rosetta if you want legacy plug-ins to work. Also, the GoFlight plug-in wasn't cooperating even with the Rosetta checkbox enabled, and kept crashing X-Plane on startup, so I may have to go without that one extra switch panel for now. I think I will also update the "getting started" guide with what I learned, it certainly took me long enough even though this wasn't nearly my first time setting up Swift.

@Kumiankka Welcome to XP12 and the new M3 iMac 🍺

I can´t give much hints wrt. MacOS issues, so here are just some general ones:

The plugins I have working under XP12 are xswiftbus, Avitab, BetterPushback, Xfseconnect, Little XpConnect and xgs for landings.
For most of them I had to look for XP12 updates, e.g.

If you have been using the Skunkcrafts updater plugin then note that this is no longer required since there is now a standalone Skunkcraft updater available which is much easier to handle and also faster. If you are not already using it, it can be found at

For scenery I recommend to get the XP12 version of Simheaven stuff like X-Europe, etc. and also the Germany VFR addons by Günther have new special XP12 versions.

Some custom sceneries which accidentally used "private" general LR objects no longer work since LR removed several of those objects in XP12. As workaround you can pick those missing objects from XP11 and put them into an additional library.

Generally speaking old scenery worked very well except for some missing exclusion zones or mesh issues.

Wrt. aircraft:

I bought an upgrade from Toliss for XP12 for the A319 if I remember correctly. Don´t know about other models.

The X-Crafts Embraer Family (for smaller aircraft) works partially (start with engines enabled etc.). I don´t have the Embraer Jets Family with the larger models, but they are new and should work right away.

For the Zibo B737 you definitely need newest XP12 compatible version.

Aerobask Phenom 300 has a XP12 version and works excellent. Unfortunately many older aircraft have no update option if they were largely based on SASL 2, e.g. the Eclipse 550NG and Pipistrel Panthera.

Carenado models made by Thranda are not expected to work anymore, I miss my PC-12. The STMA guys with their PC-12 have not published anything yet.

The new LR Cessna Citation X is really worth it. I use it a lot for my FS-Economy stuff (as well as the Phenom 300). Large range and low fuel consumption. System depth seems to be ok.

If you are adventurous you may also want to consider to use the new XP12 Beta which has improved handling for props and turboprops on landing.

Do you already have an idea about how much your framerates have improved?

Can you run with settings max´ed out?

@Kumiankka Welcome to XP12 and the new M3 iMac. And many thanks to @ostkamp for the valuable XP12 advice. However, my Bombardier Challenger 650 from Hotstart (the most expensive of all airplanes) crashes (CTD) under 12.0.8beta1, so I went back to 12.0.7. Today's destination airport is fantastic! I also saw a great bridge challenge.

Here I am just bringing a rented Epic Victory to Gilgit, which I want to change to tomorrow when I land with the Challenger 650 coming from Jammu. However, there is no Epic Victory in FSE, I now use it as a replacement for the Ellipse 550, which doesn't really work well in XP12, both excellent work by Aerobask.

Greeting fellow pilots, this was a challenging, but fun flight. I started from  Islamabad, Pakistan (OPIS) Runway 28R.  I departed just after Merlin and before Chaser.  I was flying the EV-55 turboprop.

Would love to hear how m3 iMac works for xp12! a lot people are asking the same question on the Mac thread. 

I did a brief survey of the area, its am amazing and certainly challenging location for sure. It's a great find! :)

Hi fellow pilots,

this week I had a lot of FSE flights before finally coming to Gilgit.

I plan to maybe buy a King Air 350 (or Phenom 300) in FSE (for approx. 750-800k FSE dollars wrt. King Air 350) and hopefully a King Air 350 model for XP12 at reduced price at the next Black Friday Sale in the org-store. The 350er can transport a reasonable number of passengers and even some cargo between smaller airports. The problem of the business jets in FSE is that they cannot transport more than 500kg cargo (which renders them nearly useless for cargo transport), while the King Air can transport 2000 kg.

The FSE flights with Gilgit as destination had no suitable aircraft at the departure airport so that I started with a flight from Gilgit to a Chinese town named Hotan (ZWTN) officially in a Piaggio Avanti 180 parked at Gilgit which I substituted with the King Air C90 which is available as stock aircraft in X-Plane 12.

My first attempt unfortunately failed since I had setup the pressuring system incorrectly and then hypoxia started at some point over 14000 ft. @Big-IN gave me some hints (I shared screen via Discord) but when I finally got it settled, I crashed into some mountain due to emergency descent invoked earlier, and had to restart.

The 2nd attempt went much better. We had to climb up to 23000 ft to pass the mountain tops.

While enroute I by chance found this document at https://www.theairlinepilots.com/forumarchive/airfield-area-procedures/gilgit/gilgit-ops.pdf which described a illustrated tour to Gilgit including the full approach procedures.

On approach to runway 25 one has to stay in close touch with the mountains.

The landing itself was however not good. The aircraft touched down and then turned around and slipped through the dirt after diverting from the runway (replay strangely showed the aircraft floating in the air, thus there are no images for that, sorry). But no tyres got blown up and I made it to terminal with no injuries. @Big-IN had already landed and since he was using standard scenery it looks like he destructed some flower bed. @CHASMAN2014 can be seen next to him.

I hope the new iMac M3 worked well for you @Kumiankka - please let us know the details about settings and framerate achieved for Gilgit and other more complex environments. Maybe that gives us some impressions about whether the regular M3 and 24 GB is sufficient.

First fly-in and PIREP on the M3 iMac! Thanks to everyone for the great advice, it certainly came in very handy. Even so, I ran into plenty of little glitches throughout the evening, hopefully just temporary annoyances until I get better used to XP12 and/or some of the relevant bugs actually get fixed.

Started out from Lahore's Allama Iqbal Int'l, flying @henkfix's XP12 update of the ATR-42 originally made by C. Riviere. @loumper88 had made a PIA livery which was still compatible with the updated version.

Decided to fly non real time since the sun had already set in Pakistan by the time I logged on. With the clock set to early morning instead, I got to admire the improved sunrise effects and sky colors in XP12.

Another strange autopilot issue cropped up this week - the altitude hold which was supposed to keep me at FL220 somehow got ignored, sending me up to over 30000 feet, way above the ATR-42's intended service ceiling.

As I descended back to my intended altitude, @rajo pointed out the nearby peak of Nanga Parbat.

After entering the valley and starting the approach, I noticed something else wrong. The Swift client wasn't displaying anyone else correctly, with all the models getting mapped to a tiny Stinson L-5 impossible to see from a distance.

Couldn't exactly troubleshoot the issue while still airborne, so I had to get down to Gilgit Airport first. This turned out about as tricky as expected, this first try ending in a go-around and a near miss with a mountainside.

After parking at the airport, I had to spend some time copying over CSLs from my old Mac and figuring out which button I forgot to press when setting up the Swift install on my new one.

The next plane I picked wasn't exactly eye candy worthy of all this new hardware... an old converted MFI-17 Mushshak from the days of X-Plane 7, still somehow flyable in XP12! @Fatherofsam arrived and vacated the runway just as I logged back on.

Holding short of runway 07 gave me a good vantage point to watch @Big-IN try to land what looked like a King Air from my point of view. It took him two attempts but I believe he made it down, even though the Swift client made the landing look more like a nose-dive.

The bare-bones aircraft model had no navigation instruments, so I had to pay close attention to my surroundings to find my way to Skardu.

...but with two extra runways compared to what I remembered being there! At first I wondered whether some sim glitch had duplicated the airport somehow, but a look at Google Maps confirmed that the layout is close enough to the real world, the newer airbase on the left side is apparently very recently constructed and just wasn't there the last time we went to Skardu.

In fact, one of the runways (14R) was still half-finished in my scenery, so I ended up switching to 14L at the last minute.

For the return trip to Gilgit, I started out from one of the helipads in a Pakistani Mi-17 helicopter.

The model looked quite nice but the handling was atrocious. Part of this may be due to the low framerates caused by the detailed 3D model, with everything else I was getting between 40 and 60 FPS but barely 20 on the Mi-8/Mi-17.

Following the river valleys back to Gilgit was a bit easier now that I had been through the route once in the MFI-17 already.

Switching to the JF-17 Thunder, I took off to look for @Vega66 who was inbound from the Indian side of the border in his F-16.

With some tweaking the JF-17 was what you could call barely flyable in XP12. Stable enough if you avoid sharp moves and don't use the flaps (which due to some strange glitch showed up as fully extended on the 3D model despite definitely being retracted all the time)

Spent quite a while trying to get a visual on Vega but the best I could do was see his callsign fly by. The camera controls in XP12 are far worse (particularly the mousewheel zoom) so I wasn't able to keep the camera focused on him long enough.

As Vega headed back for his base, low on fuel, I got lucky and managed to line up these two shots.

Seconds afterwards, the JF-17 departed controlled flight and went into a spin. Had to pop the brake chute to be able to pull out, luckily I still had plenty of altitude left!

Likewise low on fuel after all that time on afterburner, I set course for Lahore hoping to find a longer runway than the one at Gilgit.

On second thought I probably should've headed for Islamabad closer by - the last of the fuel ran dry and I turned into an expensive glider long before reaching OPLA

There was an airbase just within gliding distance near Hafizabad - certainly better than nothing!

Slammed the fighter jet down onto the runway and called for a tow truck before logging off.

 

Seems there's a lot of variability in framerates from one scenery or aircraft model to another, but so far the M3 seems at least usable enough for XP12, although not on anything near the maximum rendering options. I might still experiment with the screen resolution too, right now I am running at 2240x1260 (half the iMac's native screen resolution) but I wonder if reducing that might allow me to increase some of the other rendering options instead. Hopefully I will also get a better idea of which planes are still flyable on XP12 and which ones are too buggy to bother with!

I am usually running fine with XP12 and the settings shown below. I think key is the reduction wrt. shadows, turning off 3d vegetation and maybe reducing cloud quality. Rendering distance and Objects density are still maxed out whenever possible. This is using an Nvidia 2080 with 8 GB and a 9 year old Core i7 4770k overclocked to 4.2 Ghz, Screensize 1920 x 1080 pixel.

Maybe @rajo can also share his settings, since he is actually on Apple Silicon MacBook Pro even if he might have more RAM then your iMac.

Maybe @rajo can also share his settings, since he is actually on Apple Silicon MacBook Pro even if he might have more RAM then your iMac.

fps 50-65 on MacBookPro 14" M2max 64GBmem 2TBssd + 5K Studio Display + HD Cinema Display. XP12 runs under rosetta.

With this settings fps even on very heavy scenery together with very heavy Airplane don't go under 25. Pirep later ...

This is my setting, m2max studio driving two displays. One Cinema 30 at 2560x1600 and 2nd at 1920x1200. 2nd monitor is only used for flying aids ( map, teamspeak, swift, etc. ) Usually 40-60 fps, rarely dipping below 40. I keep right side more of medium setting because of single core performance is still somewhat limited.

Gilgit was an opportunity to put my Bombardier Challenger 650, the most expensive of all XP aircraft, to use, as I had last parked it in Bhubaneshwar, India. As I was embarking on a series of flights, I familiarized myself for the first time with the "Permanent" mode, where all settings are saved so that you can pick up exactly where you last left off. Previously, I had always started from scratch. AThat's how I made it to Jammu (VIJU), filling up somewhere where it was particularly cheap.

I had created a flight plan in Little Navmap with self-set GPS points to get through the mountains automatically and without any problems

Thanks guys, I think I've got my settings adjusted a bit better for the next one, here they are. I ended up reducing the screen res back to the same 1600x900 I ran on the old Mac, since any higher makes those yellow text callsigns in the Swift client impossible to see. Saves a couple frames per sec too and lets me increase some of the other settings respectively.

Interestingly on the M3, shadow quality and 3D vegetation make no noticeable difference. The single biggest difference was antialiasing, the M3 can't really handle the MSAA settings so that one should be the first to go. After that, higher cloud quality also costs a few frames that could be spent someplace more efficient. I also have the sim set to run four flight model frames per each rendered frame, this helps a lot with the helicopters and fighter jets and makes the occasional slowdown not quite so disastrous.

Choice of aircraft, scenery and weather conditions makes a big difference as you'd expect. With these settings at the new XP12 default airport KPDX and its quite detailed scenery, and the default Laminar Cessna 172 loaded, I got about 30 FPS even with rain and overcast. Tried my own Oulu VFR scenery too, and got 35-50 FPS there depending on viewpoint, still overcast. And 60 FPS in Gilgit with clear skies and the relatively basic fly-in scenery.

Most other aircraft I tried were surprisingly easier on the system than the default Cessna... with the exception of the Mi-8 helicopter in my PIREP, no matter which rendering options I tried I couldn't get the framerates above 20, even in Gilgit! Even removing the librain plug-in which some have blamed for low framerates did nothing, so I guess I'll just need to watch the autodisconnect in Swift if I ever fly that one again.

For this one chose to start from Peshawar snd stick to the Cessna Caravan with the Original Thranda livery for most of the journey.

First stop at Thoise. There, the old orthos weren't working greatly on XP12, causing funny glitches, and for that decided to take some minutes to rebuild them on the most recent Ortho4XP.

I set off from Peshawar in an ATR-72 (aerosoft model) and all went well, followed river valley for the final approach, overflew the airfield and turned back for landing. Approach went fine, touchdown went fine. Then I selected reverse thrust and took off again ! 😟 My reverser selection was not the program I thought it was controlling my throttle quadrant. And I was not too sure what was on my second attempt. Eventually stopped just off the runway by turning off the engines after touchdown. Taxied back, partly on the grass and watched arrivals. Unfortunately no time to do much else.

Hello everyone,

I also departed from Islamabad (OPIS) this week. A medium turboprop seemed like the right choice for getting in to Gilgit with high altitude and a short runway. An out of memory crash set me back about 20 minutes during startup.

Daylight time was necessary for the visual approach but fortunately there was no need to change the real weather with clear skies the whole way.

And the landing rate plugin was not happy with my landing techniques. Although it was better to be landed early than risk a runway overrun or go around.
