ST Engineering Marine Singapore conducted the inaugural steel-cutting ceremony for the first Multirole Combat Vessel (MRCV) of the Singapore Navy on Friday (Mar. 8). The ceremony involved small plates being cut, attended by Singapore Navy Commander Admiral Sean Wat and a delegation from the Defense Science and Technology Agency (DSTA).
Scheduled to be integrated into the service’s fleet by 2028, the forthcoming MRCV warship is designed to function as a mother ship, with the capability to oversee various unmanned systems across aerial, surface, and underwater dimensions, as stated in a brief announcement by the Singapore Navy.
In March 2023, Singapore’s Ministry of Defense awarded ST Engineering Marine a contract to design and construct six MRCV warships. This announcement follows an earlier revelation by DSTA Singapore about signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Saab of Sweden to collaboratively design and develop the project.
The MOU announcement highlighted that the ships will incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analysis, enhancing its digital capabilities. European companies Thales and Leonardo were disclosed as the appointed suppliers for the MRCV’s combat systems, although specific details remain undisclosed.
During the IMDEX 2023 naval exhibition in Changi, Singapore, computer-generated images were released, indicating that the MRCV is slightly larger than a frigate but smaller than a large Landing Ship Tank (LST) vessel. With a length of between 110m-130m, it features a flight deck and aft hangar for rotary wing UAVs, two large aft ramp doors for USVs, and port and starboard side doors for RHIB hard-bottomed rubber boats.
