Experts seek support against socio-cultural stereotypes against girl child
Nigerians have been urged to support the fight against the socio-cultural stereotypes of gender abuse and discrimination against the female gender in the country.
Experts, who made the appeal through an online (WhatsApp) celebration of the 2023 International Day of the Girl Child, convened by Mr. Babatunde Sanyaolu, with the theme, ‘Invest In Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being’, advocated for humane treatment of the female gender.
“The United Nations came up with the International Women’s Day and the International Day of the Girl Child to consciously fight against the socio-cultural stereotypes of gender abuse and gender discrimination against the female gender across the globe. Equitable humane treatment of the female gender, not superiority over the male gender, is the centre-piece of the advocacy.
“One striking point is that the celebration of Women’s and Girls’ Days have brought both girls and boys together in a win-win situation. Boys had actively participated in the celebrations, and this had resultantly led to constructive collaborations and mutual gender courtesy,” he said.
Aside various speeches, poems and articles, the participants, which included Mrs. Grace Afanu, Mrs. Mutiat Sadiq, Mrs. Titi Aderibigbe, Mrs. Olusakin, Mrs. Funke Madandola, Sister Anita Okoeko, Mrs. Yemisi Aina, Sister Adijat Akinyode, Mrs. Tosin Obadimu, Mrs Iyabo Akintola, Sister Inioluwa Sanyaolu (Techsters Volunteer), Mr. Mark Desmond and Sister Aminat Olaiya (Techsters Associate), among others, said all hands must be on deck to ensure that the girl child is always protected. Guided by the theme, the resource persons and other members of the group conveyed messages that made the celebration unique.
