With the sunny weather becoming regular, the deadline to remove studded tires in Idaho is quickly approaching.

Idaho law states all studded snow tires must be removed, or drivers risk receiving a $67 fine by April 30. State transportation authorities say a deadline extension is not anticipated.

Studded tires are snow tires with small cleats embedded in the tread. Studded tires may be ideal for snow and ice, but they cause undue wear and tear on bare roads. Driving with studded tires in normal road conditions causes millions of dollars of damage each year.

Studded tires also provide weaker traction in dry and wet environments, making it less safe for yourself and other drivers on the road. Neighboring states like Oregon and Washington are setting the studded tire deadline for March 31, so take note if you have any travel plans driving through those areas.

Ensure your vehicles are properly equipped for safer roads.
