The more rapid the weight loss, the bigger the conflict and the smaller the likelihood of successful and lasting weight loss. By aligning the different areas of the brain, the Hamster-Brain-Method will help you reach your goals of health and lifelong weight maintenance.

Felix Kreier & Maarten Biezeveld Felix Kreier published in 2020 a scientific study on the hypothalamus, in the series Handbook of Clinical Neurology. In 2017, he and his colleague Maarten Biezeveld have founded the Haus of Hamster. Together, they developed a unique method for sustainable weight loss, based on Felix’ previous findings during and after he conducted his brain research studies. Maarten Biezeveld’s scientific research centered on the Kawasaki disease (an illness that affects the immune system) resulted in articles published in prominent scientific journals, such as The Lancet, and later on in a thesis, titled Genes and Proteins in Kawasaki Disease.

The Genie out of the Bottle Philosophy is Everywhere How did we become the self-assured and at the same time insecure people that we are today?

Ever since Descartes let the genie out of the bottle, by ushering in the era of radical doubt, God ceased to be an anchor in our existence. Human beings have had to decide for themselves what kind of creatures they are and we can trace back the various results of this quest not only in philosophy, but in western culture as a whole.

Ger Groot argues that modern self-awareness, as articulated by Locke, Rousseau, Schopenhauer and Heidegger, is as likely to be found in the music of Bach and Stravinsky as it is in black metal and Monty Python.

Ger Groot Ger Groot (1954) has taught Philosophy at the universities of Amsterdam, Nijmegen and Rotterdam. undermines the meaning of democracy. This book describes these historical changes and links together works by established economists and management gurus with works by contemporary historians and philosophers. Illustrative European case studies provide very recognisable examples, making the material easy to grasp. The book states that the dominance of management in our society explains why we are incapable of dealing effectively with current challenges such as expensive yet often ineffective health care, increasing inequality, environmental problems and climate change. It proposes that issues caused by thinking as a manager cannot be solved by thinking as a manager. With help from authors like Hannah Arendt and Susan Neiman,

For readers of Hendrik Groen’s bestselling titles

At first the life of this midlifer seems not very exciting: every Friday she drinks beer in her favourite bar De Pels, every Sunday she loyally visits her retired parents, and walks through the Jordaan, a neighborhood in Amsterdam, with its typical inhabitants. However, Hoetmer describes these everyday situations with so much humor, melancholy and love that they almost adopt epical perspectives. In this way she creates a life which is both airy and gloomy, where fears and issues sometimes are laughed off and sometimes are tackled. Briefly, life as we all know it. Van Oorschot is Holland’s oldest surviving independent publisher. Ever since its foundation in 1945, by the legendary publisher G.A. van Oorschot, it has been building a list of the most renowned and respected Dutch literary authors, such as A. Alberts, M. Vasalis, Rutger Kopland, W.F. Hermans, Gerard Reve, and J.J. Voskuil. Over recent years the company, still proudly independent, has been publishing a new generation of talented writers like Nico Dros, Ester Naomi Perquin, Miek Zwamborn, Otto de Kat, Stephan Enter, Marijke Schermer, Gilles van der Loo, Martin Michael Driessen, Maria Barnas, Nicolien Mizee, Erik Lindner, Sander Kollaard, all of which were published to great acclaim.

Introducing a New Series: Van Oorschot By The Way In every book in the series, the reader tags along with a writer on one of their favourite walks. Bestselling authors Gerbrand Bakker, Bregje Hofstede, Nelleke Noordervliet, Thomas Rosenboom and Marjoleine de Vos will take on the first installments. Gerbrand Bakker describes a hike in his beloved Eifel and De Vos starts her walk from her house in the Dutch province Groningen. We follow Hofstede on her journey through the Dolomites; Noordervliet follows the Beara Way in Ireland. Rosenboom shows us his daily walk in Amsterdam. The books will be filled with maps, drawings, photo’s and dried vegetation. And last but not least: the books fit into your coat pocket, so your own tour is always within reach.

In her unparalleled, precise style, she describes how everything she sees, incites reflections on symbiosis and realism, motherhood and self-development, finding happiness in the small things and the vastness of life itself.

Bergje Hofstede Bregje Hofstede’s (1988) first novel The Sky above Paris was nominated for the Libris Literature Prize. The Rediscovery of the Body appeared in 2016, followed by Drift in 2017 which was highly acclaimed and was placed on the shortlist of the Libris Literature Prize. She also writes for various magazines and newspapers.

You Looked Too Far Every day, Marjoleine de Vos goes for a walk, starting from her house in Zeerijp. Beneath a bright blue sky, heavy clouds or in merciless rain, they are always there: the fields, in bloom or bare, the crows, the trees with or without their foliage, the little church in Eenum. Everything is always the same and always different. What is it about hiking that makes it so appealing? She reflects on the difference between the city and the countryside, the position of cultural landscape in the Netherlands, about the art of loss, a course on landscape reading.

First, he goes towards the IJ, where he marvels at the vastness of the water, and then continues via the Prinsengracht, circling back to his home. Along the way, he comes across the strangest characters, such as the nudist reader or the bubble woman. In his exceptionally meticulous style, Rosenboom reveals how walking with Amsterdam as his background shaped him, as a writer and as a human being.

Thomas Rosenboom Thomas Rosenboom (1956) published his first novel, Bedenkingen, in 1982. The novels Washed Flesh (1994) and Public Works (1999) were his big break for the Dutch public and both novels won the Libris Literature Prize. Publieke werken was also successfully adapted for film. His most recent novel The Red Carpet, was published in 2012.

The Lamb Clarissa’s son, Joris, is a toddler when he marvels at a dead lamb left in the market square. How is it possible that something so young can die? Not long after, Joris pees blood. Powerless, Clarissa sees how her son undergoes gruelling treatments and loses his rosy cheeks and blonde hair. It changes her perception of the world around her; tacitly and gradually, all color and life disappear, all that remains is decay and finiteness. In an attempt to defeat fate, Clarissa forces herself into vitality and life. She indulges in classical painting and every day, she and Joris go to the woods. To convince Joris and herself that not all wounded lambs die, they travel to Ghent to see the Ghent Altarpiece (or Adoration of the Mystic Lamb) by the Van Eyck brothers. Orig. The Hunt for the Amber Room It might very well be the biggest missing piece of art in history: the amber room. A room made of valuable amber which sovereign Frederick I of Prussia had built in the eighteenth century.

His son inherited the room, who gave the artwork to the Russian tsar Peter the Great, after which it continued to amaze two centuries worth of visitors of the Russian Empire.

After 1945, the room disappeared without a trace. How it is possible that a whole room Orig. Title: Jacht op de barnsteenkamer Orig. Language: Dutch Orig. Publisher: Van Oorschot 240 pp. | August 2020 Territory: World excl. Dutch M AT ERI A L AVA I L A B LE Dutch MS

Jerker Spits brings the answer to this question closer to the surface. He writes about treasure hunter’s hopes and illusions, their love for art and the cruelty of history itself.

The Hunt for the Amber Room is about a quest set against the backdrop of defining events in twentieth-century European history: the Russian Revolution, the rise of the Third Reich, the end of the Second World War and the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

Jerker Spits Jerker Spits (1977) studied German language and literature. At Uitgeverij Van Oorschot, he published a book on German culture: Steel Helmets and Currywurst (Staalhelmen en curryworst, 2016).
