Students from Canadian universities, families among plane crash victims in Iran Newlyweds, a toddler and university students returning to their studies were among 138 people travelling to Canada who died Wednesday morning when a Ukrainian passenger plane crashed shortly after taking off from Iran’s capital, Tehran. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said 138 of the 176 passengers aboard the Kyiv-bound plane had connecting flights to Canada. “A Ukrainian Airlines plane just landed in Toronto from Kyiv,” he said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. “According to the airline, there were 138 passengers who weren’t on that flight.” A portrait of the people who should have filled those seats began to emerge in the hours following the crash. Arsalani, her husband Hiva and their one-yearold child all died in the crash. More than a dozen students from Canadian universities as well as professors and alumni were confirmed among the crash victims. University of Alberta president David Turpin said several of the school’s students were on the plane. “This is a devastating loss for the University of Alberta,” he said. “Ours is a closely interconnected community, and we grieve with everyone touched by this terrible loss.” Payman Paseyan, a member of the Iranian-Canadian community in Edmonton, said his friend Pedram Mousavi died along with his wife Mojgan Daneshmand and their daughters Daria

Mousavi and Dorina Mousavi. The parents were engineering professors at the University of Alberta. “They had two young girls with them. I can’t imagine what was going through their mind,” said Paseyan. Hossein Saghlitooin, who did his PhD and post-doctorate under Mousavi, said he has known the family for about six years. “I was crying my eyes out. I am not an emotional person, but I know them so much,” he said. “It’s not just that I was working with them or that he was my boss, he was a friend. He was like a father to me.” Several other Canadian schools went through the heartbreaking task Wednesday of determining whether any of their students were aboard the plane. Continued on page 7

B.C. Greens set rules, money, details to replace Andrew Weaver

Adam Olsen

Victoria: The British Columbia Green party has announced more details about its leadership contest as Andrew Weaver officially leaves the post. The party says voting will take place, primarily online, from June 15 to 26, and it will use ranked ballots for three or more candidates or first-past-the-post for a

contest of two. The party announced last month that Green legislature member Adam Olsen would be its interim leader and he stepped into the job on Monday. It also said voters aged 16 and up can vote for a candidate even if they’re not a member of the party, although membership is free

for those aged 25 and younger. There will be debates in three regions of the province after April 30. Leadership candidates have until April 15 to enter the race and they will have a spending limit of $300,000, excluding the $16,000 entrance fee paid to take part. The Canadian Press

During the morning and afternoon rush hours, the new R1 King George Blvd RapidBus will come every 8 minutes. The R1 King George Blvd RapidBus service will also result in a 20 per cent increase in rider capacity compared to the 96 B-Line which it replaces. “I want to congratulate

TransLink for bringing in the RapidBus at a fraction of the cost and time it would have taken to build LRT on this exact same route,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “The service connecting Guildford, Surrey Cen-

B.C. Lottery Corp. executive denied standing in money laundering inquiry Vancouver: A senior executive at British Columbia Lottery Corp. has been denied standing in the province’s money laundering inquiry although he could still be called as a witness. The inquiry’s commissioner, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Austin Cullen, issued a written decision Monday denying Brad Desmarais participant status in the probe. Desmarais is the vice-president of casino and community gam-

ing and the interim vice president of legal compliance and security at BCLC. Desmarais, who is also a former RCMP and Vancouver police officer, argued that he has considerable expertise in money laundering investigations and has played a significant role in the regulation of gaming and casinos. However, Cullen writes in his decision that it’s not apparent that the executive’s interests are sufficiently distinct from those of the lot-

tery corporation, which already has standing in the inquiry. Cullen has previously granted standing to B.C. Lottery Corp. president James Lightbody while denying standing to Fred Pinnock, a former RCMP officer whose lawyer described him as a ``whistleblower’’ on the issue of money laundering in casinos. Others with standing in the inquiry include the B.C. Ministry of Finance, federal government, Canadian Gam-

ing Association and the B.C. Real Estate Association. The B.C. government called the inquiry last May following three independent reviews that concluded crime groups were funnelling billions of dollars through real estate, luxury cars and other parts of the province’s economy. Cullen is required to deliver an interim report by November and a final report by May 2021. The Canadian Press

New leader to be chosen by federal Conservative members on June 27 Ottawa: The Conservative Party’s Leadership Election Organizing Committee (LEOC) have decided the party’s leadership race will end on June 27, with the new leader to be announced that day in Toronto at the Toronto Congress Centre. “The LEOC has heard from members from across Canada that wanted a shorter leadership election, and this date provides the right amount of time we need to successfully administer this election, while ensuring we recognize the realities of a minority Parliament,” said Dan Nowlan, Co-Chair of LEOC. “With this timeline, and when our eventual rules come into place, leadership candidates are going to have their organizational abilities tested, and be given the opportunity to show how they’re ready to take on the tough job of being Prime Minister. This is going to be an exciting and competitive race,” said Lisa Raitt, Co-Chair of LEOC. In order to vote in the Conservative Party of Canada’s leadership election, you must hold a valid Conservative Party membership. The Party encourages anyone interested in voting in the leadership election to purchase or renew their membership now to ensure they are eligible to vote when voting opens. Other decisions surrounding the rules, the candidate application, and other items will be discussed amongst the LEOC in the coming weeks, and announcements will be made accordingly when these decisions are known.

Suspect charged in North Delta break and enters Delta: A recent call about a possible medical event led to Delta police to arresting a break and enter suspect. Delta Police were contacted on January 4 just after 6 pm, about a man on the porch of a nearby residence, who was potentially overdosing. Police arrived and located a man in the Nordel neighbourhood of North Delta, who stated he required medical attention. While an officer attended to the man another officer checked the area and determined there appeared to have been a break-in nearby. Emergency health services were called to assess the man, and based on the evidence, the man was arrested. “The investigation led police to believe the man had just committed break-ins in the area,” says Cris Leykauf, spokesperson for Delta Police. The Lower Mainland District Forensic Identification Services assisted with the investigation. Jason William Deisting, age 43, of no fixed address faces three charges in connection with this incident. He is facing charges of Break and Enter a dwelling with intent, and Break and Enter and commit, as well as possess Break and Enter instrument. Deisting is considered a prolific property crime offender. He has been remanded into custody.

More support to meet demand for early childhood educators Victoria: To meet the demand for early childhood educators (ECE) in British Columbia, the Province is reallocating $4 million within the Canada-BC Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) Agreement to provide additional bursaries through the ECE Education Support Fund. This will allow more students to pursue their education goals and an ECE career. “Passionate and nurturing child care workers are essential to ensuring all Canadian children have the best possible start in life,” said Ahmed Hussen, federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. “The Government of Canada is

pleased to work with the Government of British Columbia to help train more qualified early childhood educators.” The B.C. government launched the enhanced ECE Education Support Fund in September 2018, with a target of supporting 4,000 students by the end of March 2020. To date, this program has provided more than 5,400 bursaries to students pursuing their ECE education goals. This was done by adding an additional $1.9 million in 2019 to the initial $10-million investment. “For too long, child care providers have struggled to find qualified staff and as a result, parents ha-

New conflict of interest commissioner appointed

Victoria: Former B.C. Supreme Court justice Victoria Gray, QC, has been appointed as the conflict of interest commissioner for British Columbia’s legislative assembly. The commissioner is a non-partisan, independent officer of the legislative assembly. The commissioner’s mandate includes re-

viewing members’ confidential disclosure statements, providing advice to members regarding their financial interests, and conducting investigations and inquiries when required. A special legislative committee unanimously recommended appointing Gray, who served as a B.C. Supreme Court jus-

tice for 16 years until her retirement in 2017. After receiving her bachelor of laws degree from the University of Toronto, she practised law as a commercial litigator in Vancouver for 19 years and taught civil litigation at the Peter A. Allard school of law at the University of British Columbia. She has chaired several

boards, including the Law Foundation of B.C., YWCA Metro Vancouver and West Coast LEAF Society. The position of conflict of interest commissioner became vacant with the passing of Paul D.K. Fraser, QC, in March 2019. Lynn Smith, QC, was appointed acting commissioner in June 2019.

Project Cargo Corridor permits simplify trucking trip approvals

Still no ride-hailing in 2020; new year, same old broken NDP promises

Vancouver: Commercial truck drivers will experience significant time savings on their journeys, thanks to a new streamlined provincial and municipal trip permitting process. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, together with several Lower Mainland municipalities and the commercial transport industry, are making Project Cargo Corridor permits available. This streamlines the provincial and municipal trip permitting process for travel to and from Lower Mainland ports and the Alberta border. This is expected to save the trucking industry time and increase confidence for carriers and shippers in order to attract more specialized products through B.C. ports. Project Cargo Corridor permits pre-approve travel for commercial trucks between two major Lower Mainland ports (Fraser Surrey Docks and Lynnterm East Gate) and the Alberta border via Highway 16. The trucks are no longer required to complete the traditional extraordinary-load

Vancouver: Following years of broken promises, John Horgan and the NDP’s ride-hailing roll-out continues to stumble, with only one company in the province approved to operate, which is already struggling to launch under the NDP government’s burdensome regulations. “John Horgan and the NDP promised ride-hailing by Christmas 2017, then 2018, and finally Christmas 2019. Here we are in 2020 with just one small ride-hailing company approved in the entire province, and they’re already struggling to find drivers due to burdensome NDP regulations, said Jas Johal, MLA for Richmond-Queensborough. “Ride-hailing manages

approval process. It applies to commercial vehicles with the following specifications: • configuration: eightto 13-axle superloads • gross combined vehicle weight: up to 125,000 kilograms • overall height: up to 4.88 metres • overall width: up to five metres • overall length: up to 50 metres Other loads of this size require an extraordinary-load approval, which can take up to 12 business days. This is because of the analysis required to ensure the vehicle’s weight and dimensions will not damage infrastructure along the trip route. By having pre-approved vehicle specifications and routing in place, trip approvals on these

Project Cargo Corridors can occur within two business days. To make this happen, the ministry has signed information-sharing agreements with municipalities along the corridor, including the District of North Vancouver, the City of Vancouver, the City of Burnaby, the City of Langley, the Township of Langley, the City of Abbotsford and the City of Surrey. The BC Trucking Association and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority also contributed to the development of Project Cargo Corridor permits. The new permit process will be evaluated throughout the first year of operation, with potential to expand to other highway corridors in the future.

Deputy Prime Minister Freeland meets with Kenney, Nenshi in Calgary

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland with Jason Kenney Calgary: Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says he hopes to see concrete action in short order after meeting today with Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland.¬ Before the two headed into their meeting in Calgary, Kenney wished Freeland, who is of Ukrainian background, a happy Eastern Ortho-

dox Christmas. He then said he appreciates her openness to listen. Kenney says his government has identified some urgent measures to help kick-start Alberta’s economy and wants to find common ground on the province’s role in Confederation. The meeting comes as

the United Conservative government consults on ways for Alberta to have more autonomy from Ottawa, potentially with its own pension plan and police force. Freeland says she expects the two would talk about the provincial carbon tax on large emitters, methane regulations and the new

NAFTA. “We’ve really started to roll up our sleeves and get some concrete things done,” said Freeland, who met with Edmonton Mayor Don Ivison on Monday and was to meet with Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi later Tuesday. Kenney said he would convey to Freeland that he appreciates the continued outreach by the federal government. “However, Albertans do want to see some concrete action early in 2020 to demonstrate that we can find common ground in the federation.” The Liberals managed to hold on to power during October’s election, but were reduced to a minority mandate and were shut out of Alberta and Saskatchewan. There is anger in the oil-producing Prai-

rie provinces over what some believe is their outsized contribution to Confederation and a lack of federal support for the petroleum sector. Freeland, who has Al-

berta roots and is also the new minister of intergovernmental affairs, has been tasked with helping smooth Ottawa’s relationship with the West. The Canadian Press

Canada relocating some troops from Iraq to Kuwait due to safety concerns: Vance Ottawa: The Canadian military is temporarily relocating some soldiers from Iraq to Kuwait due to security concerns, chief of the defence staff Gen. Jonathan Vance said Tuesday. The move, which Vance announced in an open letter to the families of Canadian soldiers in Iraq that was posted to Twitter, follows the lead of Germany and several other allies who have withdrawn some of their troops. “Over the coming days, and as a result of Coalition and NATO planning, some of our people will be moved temporarily from Iraq to Kuwait,” Vance wrote. “Simply put, we are doing this to ensure their safety and security.” Canada has about 500 soldiers in Iraq, most of whom are there to help train local forces to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, including about 200 with a NATO mission in the south of the country and upwards of 200 special-forces soldiers in the north. Vance did not specify how

many Canadian troops were being pulled out of Iraq. “Naturally, the work we are doing on these missions, and the future of operations in Iraq, remain conditional on maintaining a sufficiently secure and

productive operational environment,” he said. Western troops in Iraq have been on high alert since the killing of an Iranian general by a U.S. drone at the Baghdad airport on Friday night. The Canadian Press

Students from Canadian universities, families among plane crash victims in Iran

The University of Toronto confirmed six of its students appeared on the passenger manifest, while the University of Windsor said at least five names on the list were members of its student or research community. Western University, Carleton, York, Waterloo, the University of Guelph, the University of British Columbia, Langara College in Vancouver, the University of Manitoba, Dalhousie University in Halifax and Montreal’s Concordia University and Ecole de Technologie Superieure all confirmed students, alumni or faculty were among the dead. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko said the plane was carrying 63 Canadians, 82 Iranians, 11 Ukrainian passengers and crew, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans and three Britons. Gounash Pirniya, a close friend, said the pair had just gotten married in Iran and had recently bought a house together. “They were successful, kind, honest and hardworking people, Pirniya said. “They were enjoying their life as Canadian citizens. Fareed Arasteh, who was studying biology at Ottawa’s Carleton University, had also just gotten married on Sunday, a family member confirmed. Shayesteh Majdnia, a past president of the Iranian Heritage Society of Edmonton, said she was close friends with Shekoufeh Choupannejad, a gynecologist who died along with her two daughters, Saba Saadat and Sara Saadat. Majdnia said she had spoken to Choupannejad’s husband, who is still in Iran, for confirmation. “She was the kindest person I had ever met, said Majdnia, speaking about Choupannejad. Several of the victims were on their way home to British Columbia, including a North Vancouver couple in their mid-50s. nian general near Baghdad and retaliatory missile attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq. Ukrainian authorities initially said it appeared mechanical failure was to blame for the crash, but later walked that back, saying nothing has been ruled out. Global Affairs Canada warned against any non-essential travel to Iran “due to the

Videos show fires lighting up the darkened fields before dawn and rows of body bags laid out along the side of a road. The plane had been delayed from taking off from Imam Khomeini International Airport by almost an hour. It never made it higher than 2,400 metres, data from the flight-tracking website FlightRadar24 indicates. It is one of the deadliest air disasters involving Canadians. Nearly 2,000 houses destroyed by Australia bushfires

Sydney: Nearly 2,000 houses have been destroyed in Australia’s months-long bushfire crisis, officials said on Tuesday, as crews prepare frantically for worsening conditions. Besides the destruction of the 1,588 houses, the New South Wales (NSW) officials said that the fires had damaged 653 more, the BBC reported. About 200 homes have been destroyed in neighbouring Victoria state, adding to more than 100 lost in other states. The Insurance Council of Australia has estimated that the damage bill had reached A$700 million ($485 million), but said it was expected the cost to rise significantly. After ferocious conditions last week, firefighters were using the milder weather to boost containment lines around fires engulfing

south-eastern Australia. But temperatures were likely to soar again on Friday, prompting fears that two fires in NSW and Victoria could form a new “mega blaze”. With smoke tormenting cities including Canberra, Sydney and now Melbourne, doctors have warned of increased respiratory dangers - especially to vulnerable people, including pregnant women. On Monday, the Bureau of Meteorology warned that visibility in Melbourne was less than 1 km in many parts of the city and its surroundings. Since the bushfires started in September, at least 25 people and millions of animals have died in the blazes fuelled by record temperatures and widespread drought, the BBC reported.

Key suspect involved in Nankana Sahib attack arrested Islamabad: Police in Pakistan’s Punjab province on Monday arrested a key suspect who was involved in the attack on the Nankana Sahib Gurdwara carried out by a Muslim mob, trapping Sikh devotees inside the shrine. District Police Officer Ismailur Rehman said that suspect Imran projected personal dispute as a religious issue and used it to deliver hate speech, The Express Tribune said in a report. Nirbhaya case: Independent India to see first multiple execution

New Delhi: The horrendous December 16, 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case will lead to free India seeing its first multiple execution with the four convicts due to be hanged in the gallows site in Jail No. 3 of the capital’s Tihar Jail complex on January 22. As a Delhi court issued death warrants for the four convicts on Tuesday, the question arises

whether India, after Independence, saw death penalty being executed on so many people together. Experts say no. Talking to IANS, former IPS officer R.K. Chaturvedi, who retired in 2018 as Uttar Pradesh’s Inspector General of Police (Intelligence), said that in his over 60 years of life in which more than 35 years were spent in the police, including postings in prisons, he had never come across a case in which four people went to the gallows at one time. “If this is done, it will be a new entry in the annals of criminal punishment in India,” he said. Chaturvedi, who was Additional Jail Superintendent in Allahabad’s Naini Jail between 1984 and 1987, said that during his time there, he had seen the execution of two convicts at a time but never thought that four would climb up the gal-

lows at one go. In his time, army deserter and dacoit Vikram Singh and a school teacher convicted of murdering five people were sent to the gallows. Tihar Jail’s retired Law Officer Sunil Gupta, whose book “Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer” recounts his service in the capital’s jail, particularly his witnessing the executions of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination conspirator Kehar Singh, and Kashmiri militant Maqbool Bhatt, is also of similar opinion. Both Chaturvedi and Gupta said that a mass execution may have been carried out during the British rule, but no one can be sure of it. However, both agreed that the death sentence to the four convicts is justified.

Top Iranian commander killed in attack ordered by Trump Tehran: Gen Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’’ (IRGC) elite Quds Force, was killed in a US attack ordered by President Donald Trump, the Pentagon said in a statement. “At the direction of the (US) President, the US military has taken decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad by killing Qassem Soleimani,” Efe news reported citing the statement as saying on

Friday. “The strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans... The US will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world,” it added. Following the development, President Trump posted a picture of an American flag on his Twitter account, without any comment. In a statement issued on Friday, the IRGC said that Abu Mahdi

al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of the Hashd Shaabi or the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), was also killed along with Soleimani in the strike that targeted their vehicle on the Baghdad International Airport road, the Tehran-based Press TV reported. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called the US attack as “extremely dangerous and a foolish escalation”. “The US’’ act of inter-

Gen Qassem Soleimani national terrorism, targeting and assassinating General Soleimani, the most effective force fighting IS, Al Nusrah, Al Qaeda, is extremely dangerous and a foolish escalation.

Indian-American Muslim group demands Adityanath’s dismissal

Yogi Adityanath Washington: An Indian-American Muslim group has demanded the dismissal of the Yogi Adityanath-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh over the deaths of anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters in the state. The Association of Indian Muslims of America has appealed to Indian President Ram Nath Kovind to dismiss the incumbent government led by Chief Minister Adityanath and proclaim the President’s rule in the state, The American Bazaar said in a report on Sunday. Kaleem Kawaja, the Executive Director of the organization, also called for imposing “special control”

on the Delhi Police, bringing the Indian capital city under the control of paramilitary forces, and monitoring the police in Karnataka to ensure that they “do not commit brutalities”. “In the last three weeks Indian citizens, students and young people have held numerous peaceful public protests in over 50 cities all across India, against the unconstitutional CAA and National Registry of Citizens (NRC) that were recently promulgated by the BJP government in India,” Kawaja said in a statement. “They are demanding the repeal of both Acts that may result in huge hardship to a very large number of citizens belonging to the economically disadvantaged citizens and Muslim citizens, and may result in many (losing) their citizenship.” He blamed the police in BJP-ruled states of using violence against the protesters.

Ukraine plane crashes in Iran, 179 killed Tehran: A Kiev-bound Ukrainian Boeing 737 passenger plane with 179 people on board crashed on Wednesday shortly after taking off from the Iranian capital of Tehran, killing all those aboard. The number of people on board had differed and also the toll was initially said to be 176. But the head of Iran’s Emergency Medical Services, Pir-Hossein Koulivand, confirmed the latest toll saying that there had been 170 passengers, including 147 Iranians, and nine crew members on the Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 that went down in the vicinity of Parand, a city in Robat Karim county, reports Press TV. Some 40 rescue teams have been dispatched to the crash site and an investigation into the cause of the accident was underway, deputy head of Iran Red Crescent Society Ebrahim Tajik said. Qassem Biniaz, an official at the Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, told IRNA news agency that the plane crashed after its engine caught fire.

The pilot made an unsuccessful attempt to control the plane when the fire erupted, he said. In a statement, Ukraine’s embassy in Tehran said engine failure caused the crash and there was no link to terrorism, reports the BBC. “According to preliminary information, the plane crashed as a result of an engine failure for technical reasons. Currently, the version of a terrorist attack is ruled out,” the statement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered the creation of a crisis team to handle the accident, including top ministers and managed by the country’s national security agency. “We have prepared emergency planes to send to Tehran... to fly out the bodies of the victims, we are waiting a confirmation by Iran for their departure,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko said that the victims were 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians including all the crew, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Britons and three Germans.

Rules for Labour leadership race to be decided London: The UK’s main opposition Labour’s ruling body is slated to meet on Monday to agree the timetable for the party’s leadership race and the rules for the forthcoming contest. Labour’s National Executive Committee, the party’s governing body, will meet to determine how the contest will be conducted, the day before Parliament returns from its Christmas recess, reports the BBC. In order to qualify to take part, candidates

need the support of at least 21 MPs, as well as the backing of 5 per cent of constituency parties or three affiliated bodies - two of which must be trade unions. The five official contenders that have entered the race are Indian-origin Wigan MP Lisa Nandy, Birmingham MP Jess Phillips, Shadow First Secretary of State Emily Thornberry, Shadow Minister for Sustainable Economics Clive Lewis and Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the

European Union Keir Starmer. During Monday’s meeting, one of the key issues to be decided is the “cut-off” period for people who are not currently full members of the party and who want to vote. Under the current rules, anyone in this position would have at least two

A final chapter in the story of Mewa Singh By Balraj S. Kahlon In 1915, the Government of B.C. killed Mewa Singh but also set his legacy in stone. Today, for B.C. Sikhs, Mewa Singh is a folk hero and a symbol against oppression. He has been honoured and commemorated in the community, but now the NGO SAF International is adding the final chapter to his story by taking him back to his ancestral village: Lopoke, Amritsar. The story of Mewa Singh begins with the birth of the Ghadar Party. In 1913, when the Ghadar Party was created, B.C. quickly became a major base of operations. Some Ghadar Party leaders were also members of the Khalsa Diwan Society (KDS) including KDS president Bhai Bhag Singh Bhikhiwind and granthi Balwant Singh. The concern for a revolt against the crown prompted the government to call Anglo-Indian William Hopkinson to monitor political activity in the Indian community. Hopkinson used his position to create divisions and chaos. He recruited some Sikhs to be in-

formants and even used them to intimidate others through violence. The most notable informant was Bela Singh Jian. On September 5, 1914 Bela Singh entered the gurdwara on West 2nd street and assassinated Bhag Singh and injured several bystanders. Local Ghadar leaders realized that Hopkinson, the source of all the violence, had to be stopped. It was then on October 21, 1914, at Bela Singh’s trial at the Vancouver Courthouse (present day Vancouver Art Gallery), where Mewa Singh walked up to Hopkinson and shot and killed him on the spot. Mewa then handed over his revolver and offered himself to police. At trial, Mewa Singh stated that his religion teaches him to not have enmity towards anybody, and he has no enmity towards Hopkinson, but he had to take his life because he was oppressing poor people. On January 11, 1915 Bhai Mewa Singh was executed. Although a folk hero in B.C., Mewa Singh is unknown in his ancestral village of Lopoke.

This will change thanks to SAF International, a local NGO that has been supporting poverty alleviation in India since 2014. SAF will honour Bhai Mewa Singh in launching their new initiative to improve rural primary schools. The improvements will include creating a better facility and providing education resources to give children a better learning environment. Quality public education is vital for both economic and social development. However, in India, middle and high-income class families are sending their children to private schools given the inferior quality of public education. This trend has resulted in great reliance on the private education system and the stigma that public schools are only for the poor. Moreover, many parents are raising concerns of private schools continually raising fees and gouging families. The Punjab Government has been seeking support from NGOs and NRIs to improve public school infrastructure. The SAF school develop project

will exemplify the benefits of investing in public education; and make children feel proud not shame - in attending their village school. The SAF team decided the first school project to be in honour of Bhai Mewa Singh in his ancestral village of Lopoke. The Lopoke village primary school will be rebuilt and renamed Bhai Mewa Singh Primary School and will include a plaque telling his story. This school project will be funded with the support of Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar in New Westminster. SAF International’s first school

is not only meant to honour Mewa Singh but also help the children appreciate their connection to history, and the struggles and sacrifices made before them. As Maya Angelou said, “if you don’t know where you come from, you don’t know where you’re going.” Mewa Singh was not among the prominent Ghadar leaders but instead a simple and humble man. He offered to sacrifice himself because he had no wife and no children; but now, the children of Lopoke can say Mewa Singh is ours, and we are his children.

Health By Klaus Ferlow, HMH, HA Eczema is besides acne and psoriasis one of the leading skin disease and is a non-contagious skin condition that can be present in several different forms, but most common forms include: • atopic (an inherited type in children) • contact (caused by a chemical irritant) • seborrhoeic (effects the scalp, face and torso) • dyshidrotic (blisters on hand and feet) Eczema generally causes inflammation resulting in scaly patches of red, cracked and painful skin. Over time the microscopic cracks and fissures can allow bacteria, viruses, and fungi into the skin to set up a secondary infection. The severity of this disease can vary; in mild forms the skin is dry, hot and itchy. More severe forms involve weeping blisters where the skin becomes broken, raw, bleeding and crusty. Some contributory factors include: genetics, emotional stress, dietary insufficiency of omega fatty acids and exposure to harsh chemical products or chlorinated water.

What should you know about eczema?

Treatment suggestions: Avoid harsh chemicals; try adding omega fatty acid supplements to your diet and Himalayan crystal salt or sea salt to bathwater. You should consult a certified Nutritionist about a diet change and might want to detoxify your body for example with Milk Thistle tablets, capsules, gel caps or tincture. Neem (Azadirachta indica), part of AYURVEDA, the oldest botanicals medicine system in the world with over 5000 years history from India, has been found effective in the treatment of eczema. The condition can be treated topically with Neem cream, shampoo, soap, and systemically in adults with

neem tincture, tea or capsules. Best results are achieved when eczema is treated at the the same time internally and externally! For the treatment of adult eczema, it is best to first use the neem oil on the affected area for a few days, followed by the neem cream to relieve the intense itching and redness. Wash the affected area with neem soap, on the scalp with neem shampoo. In severe cases adults can supplement by drinking neem leaf tea twice a daily or taking a course of neem capsules as directed. For extra topical relief, grind neem leaves and turmeric together with a mortar and pestle and apply topically to the rash. Neem leaves can also be used in the bath

Workers, families, dignitaries gather at Bentall memorial to honour men killed Vancouver: Thirty-nine years ago, four men went to work building one of Downtown Vancouver’s most iconic highrises: the Bentall Centre Tower IV. Those men never came home. “Every year on this day, we gather to remember the lives of carpenters Gunther Couvreux, Brian Stevenson, Donald Davis and Yrjo Mitrunen, who plunged 36 floors to their deaths when the fly form they were standing on collapsed,” said Andrew Mercier, executive director of the BC Building Trades. “And every year, we are reminded that construction workers continue to die as a result of workplace trauma and exposure. “We must do better.” In the years since the Bentall tragedy, more than 1,000 construction

workers have died in B.C. due to workplace trauma or disease. There were 27 work-related deaths in the construction industry to the end of November last year. Of those, nine were due to traumatic injury while 14 were due to asbestos-related disease and four were due to

other disease (caused by silica dust and ammonia). Construction workers continue to sustain an occupational fatality rate that is three times the provincial average. “We can prevent worker deaths and injuries with proper emphasis on

workplace safety, training and enforcement,” said Mercier. Every year, representatives from the BC Building Trades, the labour movement, WorkSafeBC, the business community and local leaders join family members and the public to mark the deaths of the four construction workers who died on Jan. 7, 1981.

The memorial is an opportunity to remember the men who are so deeply missed, and to renew the call for stronger safety measures in the construction industry. Participants placed wreaths at the Bentall Memorial plaque: nine red roses for workers who died from trauma, and 18 white roses for workers who died

from exposure and disease. The import, sale and use of asbestos, and the manufacture, import, sale and use of products containing asbestos were banned in Canada as of Dec. 30, 2018, with some exceptions. Although a long time coming, these new regulations will save lives, said Mercier.

Third annual event organized by the Facebook groups, World Tamil Women and its sister groups

Delta: What a fabulous and colourful night it was on December 28. It was the third annual event organized by the Facebook groups, World Tamil Women (WTW), the first of its kind created in Vancouver just for women and its sister groups Queens of Home Kitchen (QHK) and Dream Sarees and Salwars (DSS). The meet took place in Delta and was attended by nearly 100 women. These groups were created by Brindha Suresh for women. Along with her, Niranjani Sekar, Pushpalatha Seenappa and Kavitha Krishnan, are the Groups’ Admins from Vancouver. A few other admins from India and USA offer their support to the groups globally. There were contests and programmes for women of all ages in the event like fun games, 50/50 lottery, lucky draws

with Mega prizes not to mention the surprise gifts taped under 20+ chairs and return gifts to all the attendees. The visiting Mothers from India were paid homage with gifts of beautiful shawls. Event concluded with delicious Indian Dinner. “With these exclusive events, the women of our community get their well-deserved breather from their busy and demanding routine. If the focus of this event was towards promoting community solicitude, then it is apt to mention that it would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors.” “Our future goal is to register WTW group as a non-profit organization, create more opportunities of social networking, provide info sessions and organize activities for women.”

More health-care specialists, better care for British Columbians Burnaby: New investments in the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) for sonography and cardiovascular perfusion programs will mean more graduates and better health care for people in

British Columbia. “Students, health-care workers and patients have been calling on government to increase sonography training across the province for years, and we are answering that call with new and expanded programs in Northern B.C., Vancouver Island and now the Lower Mainland,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. “We’re investing in BCIT so more students can train for dynamic and rewarding health-care careers and deliver the high-quality care British Columbians rely upon.” Government is investing a total of $2.5 million. Funding of $880,000 will support the expansion of BCIT’s diagnostic medical sonography and cardiovascular perfusion programs. Eight first-year seats were added to the existing 32 sonography seats in September 2019. Another eight first-year seats will be added in 2020 for a total of 48 firstyear seats. Capital funding of $1.6 million will allow purchase of the necessary

sonography equipment. Beginning in 2020, the cardiovascular perfusion program will expand by three seats - by moving the program intake from seven students every two years to an annual intake of five students.

“Our government wants to make sure people have even greater access to health care in B.C. We need even more caring, compassionate and welltrained people to make our health system work - from health sciences professionals to physicians and nurse practitioners,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Our announcement today will address the need for more healthcare workers, which is one of the biggest challenges facing the health system.” In fiscal 2020-21, the Province will provide $640,000 in operating funding toward northern B.C.’s first sonography program at the College of New Caledonia (CNC). In addition, capital funding of $1.5 million has been provided for equipment and renovations at CNC. In October 2019, the Province also announced Vancouver Island’s first Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Camosun College with one-time funding of $1.4 million. “BCIT was the first post-secondary to offer diagnostic sonography

in B.C. and is one of only three institutions in Canada to teach cardiovascular profusion, both of which are critically important specialties in our growing health-care system,” said Kathy Kinloch, president, BCIT. “We are proud of the increasing number of graduates providing quality care to British Columbians, thanks to ongoing support from the provincial government. This funding helps ensure that we continue to provide state-of-the-art equip-

ment and training to more skilled professionals essential to B.C.’s health-care workforce.” As B.C.’s population continues to age, health professionals are in increasingly high demand - the 2018 BC Labour Market Outlook projected 82,100 job openings in the health professions by 2028. Cardiovascular perfusionists and sonographers are two of the top 13 health professions identified as in high demand. Quick Facts:

• BCIT was the first public-sector institution in B.C. to offer a diagnostic medical sonography program. • Medical sonographers operate ultrasound equipment to capture images to aid physicians in diagnosis and treatment of medical disorders, and to monitor pregnancies. • Demand for ultrasounds has increased dramatically due to B.C.’s aging population and improvements to the technology and its capabilities. Increasing

the number of training seats will help address that need and expand the capacity of health-service providers. • Cardiovascular perfusionists are key members of highly specialized surgical teams. They provide life-saving support to patients undergoing heart and lung surgery by operating complex specialized equipment, such as a cardiopulmonary bypass machine (heart-lung machine), during surgery.

Kids’ diet improves after watching cooking show on healthy food London: While exposure to television advertisements about fast foods is often linked to unhealthy eating habits among children, a new research has revealed that TV programmes featuring healthy foods can influence children to make healthier food choices now and in adulthood. Kids who watched a child-oriented cooking show featuring healthy food were 2.7 times more likely to make a healthy food choice than those who watched a different episode of the same show featuring unhealthy food, said the study published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behaviour. “The findings from this study indicate cooking programmes can be a promising tool for promoting positive changes in children’s food-related preferences, attitudes, and behaviours,” said lead author Frans Folkvord of Tilburg University in the Netherlands. For the study, the researchers asked 125 children between 10 to 12 years of age at five schools in the Netherlands to watch 10 minutes of a Dutch public television cooking programme designed for children, and then offered them a snack as a reward for participating. Children who watched the healthy programme were far more likely to choose one of the healthy snack options -- an apple or a few pieces of cucumber -- than one of the unhealthy

options -- a handful of chips or a handful of salted mini-pretzels. This study was conducted at the children’s schools, which could represent a promising alternative for children learning healthy eating behaviours. Prior research has found youth are more likely to eat nutrient-rich foods including fruits and vegetables if they were involved in preparing the dish, but modern reliance on ready-prepared foods and a lack of modelling by parents in preparing fresh foods have led to a drop in cooking skills among kids. “Providing nutritional education in school environments instead may have an important positive influence on the knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviours of children,” Folkvord said. This study suggests the visual prominence of healthier options in both food choice and portion size on TV cooking programmes leads young viewers to crave those healthier choices then act on those cravings. But the effect that exposure to healthier options has on children is strongly influenced by personality traits. For example, children who don’t like new foods are less likely to show a stronger desire for healthier choices after watching a TV programme featuring healthier foods than a child who does enjoy trying new foods. Trudeau government spending hits all-time high, including years of war and recession Vancouver: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has now recorded the highest ever per-person spending level of any federal government, including those that fought wars or faced recessions, finds a new study released by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank. “This high level of spend-

ing could lead to a rapid deterioration of federal finances should the economy continue to slow, or worse, enter into a recession,” commented Jake Fuss, a senior policy analyst with the Fraser Institute and co-author of Prime Ministers and Government Spending, 2020. The study, which tracks annual per person program spending (adjusted for inflation) by prime

ministers since Confederation, finds that spending in 2019 ($9,066 per Canadian) tops the previous all-time record of $8,811 (in 2019 dollars) set by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2009 during the global recession. In fact, three of the four highest-spending years on record—2017, 2018 and 2019–are all in the current government’s tenure. By comparison, at the

height of World War Two in 1943, per person spending (in 2019 dollars) reached $7,582 before dropping back down to $1,766 by 1948. Another spending spike as a re-

sult of the 1981 recession saw per person spending reach $7,557 in 1982. “Wars and recessions clearly affect government finances, but high levels of spending without

those same external pressures raises legitimate questions about fiscal discipline in Ottawa,” said Jason Clemens, executive vice-president of the Fraser Institute.

KPU instructor discusses how mythology is very much a part of Bollywood sci-fi Vancouver: It’s the largest film industry in the world, producing over 1200 movies a year. Yet, the Indian movie industry doesn’t have significant representation in the world of science fiction. Kwantlen Polytechnic University English instructor, Dr. Asma Sayed, will be discussing this and the overall culture of Bollywood (Hindi language cinema) films at the next KPU Science World Speaker Series event. “Talks such as this are a good opportunity for those who may not be much exposed to India’s film industry to capture a few glimpses, but also to think about how cultural texts impact our society,” says Sayed. Sayed’s research focuses on South Asian literary and cultural studies. Her work intersects with postcolonial, feminist and critical race theories. She brings these elements of her research to this talk. “Science fiction film has not been a very popular genre in India, but it is becoming more appealing; however, this genre also follows the tropes of mainstream Bollywood films which

tend to take much of their inspiration from mythology and classical Indian literature. It thus leads to an interesting mix of the traditional and the modern.” To appeal to the masses, Indian cinema continues to use classic staples and themes that the industry is known for but with modern twists. “For instance, in science fiction films, we see robots dancing to popular songs, or aliens challenging the existence of gods.” Sayed will use Bollywood sci-fi examples such as Ra One and PK. She says while some films push boundaries and shed light on social justice

issues, the movies still have existing stereotypes. “For instance, popular culture can perpetuate misogyny, toxic masculinity, and rape culture. Thus, it is important for us to have a critical eye when consuming these products generated for masses.” Sayed hopes to introduce people who may not be familiar with Bollywood to a little glimpse into the industry. Between Science and Mythology: The World of Bollywood Science Fiction Film takes place on Monday, January 20 at 7 p.m. Learn more here and register for the free event. Seats are limited.

No place for sexual violence on campus Victoria: A renewed awareness campaign to help keep students safe from sexual violence has launched. Timed to coincide with back-to-class Frost Week 2020 activities, the campaign is aimed at students, both on campus and in the community. As with previous campaigns, social media ads will remind students that sex without consent is rape and that consent must be voluntary – otherwise it is assault. “Our government is responding to a call to action from students to ensure that our campuses are safer for everyone, regardless of gender expression, identity or sexual orientation,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. “Any form of sexual violence or misconduct will not be tolerated. Frost Week is a time when students gather to socialize and have fun. It’s a good opportunity for renewed dialogue about what constitutes sexual violence and misconduct, and personal responsibilities and choices.” The provincewide campaign will engage students where they are most likely to see it – on digital platforms including Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. In June 2019, the Province announced $760,000 to support a number of initiatives, including a plain-language review of policies and processes regarding sexual violence and misconduct to ensure they are clear and easy to understand. The funding is also being used to co-ordinate resources, so that post-secondary institutions can learn from each other, share best practices and access training resources. All 25 of B.C.’s public post-secondary institutions are required to have sexual violence and misconduct policies. The Sexual Violence and Misconduct Policy Act also requires institutions to make their policies publicly available.

Melanie Mark Provincial regulations require private institutions with student residences to have policies in place. Quick Facts: • The Frost Week 2020 campaign follows the Province’s Frosh Week 2019 Sexual Violence Prevention campaign that launched Aug. 29, 2019, and ran until Oct. 21, 2019. • The fall 2019 campaign included outreach through a student-climate survey to better understand lived experience and evaluate needs on campus going forward. • Student feedback that informed both campaigns was also collected from a forum in June 2019 called Moving Forward Together: Building Capacity to Prevent and Respond to Sexual Violence on Campus.

The couple had flown to Dubai during the New Year’s where Hardik popped the question. The cricketer took his Instagram handle to reveal pictures of them announcing the engagement. Hardik spoke about the same when he attended an event hosted by India Today. “We as cricketers did not know what

was going to happen. The ball was not in my court, it was in some else’s court where they had to take the shot and that’s a very vulnerable place you don’t want to be,” he said. In early 2019, Hardik Pandya and K.L Rahul graced Karan Johar’s chat show Koffee With Karan. However, the sexist comments passed by the cricketers did not go down well with the audience. Owing to the outrage, the cricketers were issued notices by the BCCI. They were suspended from the team due to which they could not play India’s ODI series against Australia.

Christian Bale to star in ‘’Thor: Love and Thunder’’? Los Angeles: Actor Christian Bale is in negotiations to join Marvel Studios “Thor: Love and Thunder”. If the deal is sealed, it would be Bale’s first big franchise movie since his final performance as Bruce Wayne (Batman) in 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises”, reports variety.com. The fourth film in the “Thor” franchise, which is slated to open on November 5, 2021, will be directed by “Thor: Ragnarok” filmmaker Taika Waititi, with Chris Hemsworth playing the titular superhero. Actress Tessa Thompson will also be reprising her role from “Ragnarok” as Valkyrie.

Natalie Portman will be returning to the franchise for the first time since 2013’’s “Thor: The Dark World”. It’s unclear what role Bale would be playing in the film. At the San Diego Comic Con last year, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said that Portman’s Jane Foster will take up Thor’s hammer Mjolnir in “Love and Thunder”, and take up the persona of the Mighty Thor. If the film follows the comics, Foster could end up battling Cul, aka the God of Fear, and also Thor’s uncle. Cul is expected to be a strong villain for “Love and Thunder” and Bale could be a prime candidate to play him.

Lady Luck! Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Especially if it’s another woman doing the dirty deed. Sparks fly as the ladies let loose in Like A Boss. Get ready for a take no prisoners comedy from Paramount Pictures now serving up mild laughs at Landmark Theatres and Cineplex Cinemas around B.C. Out to replicate the mayhem a la Bridesmaids this time the

setting is the business world. Two up and comers learn the hard way that getting to the top in the cutthroat world of business is fraught with danger. Lifelong friends Mel Carter and Mia have been best pals from childhood. Leave it to Rose Byrne and Tiffany Haddish to set the world of beauty on fire with their small store and unique brands. Watch out Revlon and L’Oreil. Or in this case a mega cosmetics con-

Like A Boss (PG) *** glomerate headed by Claire Luna. Dynamic Salma Hayek breathes fire as this lunatic corporate exec who has the small beauty upstart in her sights. Can you spell takeover makeover? Well, not so fast. Bad behavior, salty dialogue and the raunchy picks up as the three lasses engage in a bitter battle for company

control. Along the way hearts will be broken and friendships fray as the trio engage in a battle of psychological warfare against their family, friends and colleagues. Made with good intentions by director Miguel Arteta Like A Boss is flighty fun over its 2 hours and 23 minute course.
