PREPARATION

AS I’VE GROWN OLDER, I only get more grateful for the interesting life that I’ve had. It has been full of experiences and challenges, successes and failures. I have taken a detailed inventory as I’ve gone through life in an attempt to learn so that with each new experience, I am better prepared. I refer to this as my “Rolodex”—a figurative card file of data that I can refer to as I venture out into anything in life.

As we enter the fall season, this preparation is focused on one of my joys in life: hunting season. For me, it has become less about the prize and more about the “hunt.” It’s about getting away and getting back to the simpler things in life with the select few friends that are important enough to share this experience with. Being out in nature and encountering it on nature’s terms. We don’t use guides, or food plots, or tree stands or vehicles. Because of where I live, we almost always hunt out of state, which means a ton of research and pre-hunt intel gathering before we get on site. We essentially go in blind and use our “Rolodex” to find success.

Around the start of August, I usually catch the fever and the percentage of my daily brain power that daydreams about the hunt begins increasing. It begins with the particular area that we’ve targeted for this season. What will the weather be like—snowing and below zero or dried out and 70 degrees? Have there been fires and is water still plentiful? Is it a thick, dark timber, high-altitude hunt where we will set up base camp, but then hike in for a few days and survive only on what we pack in? Or is it more open, rolling plains where it will be a lot of long-range glassing with a different set of challenges to close in on our target?

By September, in spite of having a ton of gear from prior years, I am refining my pack out based on things I continue to learn from the prior year. Did I use this or that, or did it just weigh me down? What did I wish I had last year that I immediately placed on my “learned the hard way list” that is always just as far as my phone away at all times? Then of

course, there’s always the new gadget to try that proclaims it’s better, smarter, lighter or faster! Some are worth trying, most are not. I’m a fan of the “classics”—because to become a classic, you must survive over the long haul!

Once we just about hit October, everything is set. I’ve been to the range not just to confirm the equipment, but gone through several rounds of drills in “real world” conditions—low light, bad wind, countless shooting positions, and so on until I feel confident that the rust has been knocked off and the equipment is still reliable. Now I’m on to the pack out list and, especially, the mental rehearsal that I’ve learned from countless years and scenarios, is the most valuable part of preparation for any situation. Mentally walking through the scenario. Sketching out the primary plan, but also the secondary, and the back up to that, and the back up to that.

To me, this is fun and thankfully, my family understands that this is my “meditation”—what helps me find my center and balance. Although this is focused on hunting, I find business and life no different, and it is what I consider the biggest thing that has led to me being where I am in life. I try to plan for everything while being comfortable knowing that nothing goes according to plan. I try to prepare for anything I can imagine life throwing at me—physically, mentally and so on, yet knowing that I’m no longer 25 and that I have to balance my expectations so I win the “marathon” instead of focusing on the sprint.

I hope all of you are preparing for the next chapter in your journey, whether that is a Monday at the office, or the trip of a lifetime! Get out there, and get after it!

Thank you all for the honor of serving you, and this great industry!

POWER MOVES

TO CAPITALIZE on the potential sales opportunities, it is essential to employ effective merchandising strategies that attract customers, stimulate their interest, and ultimately drive purchase. Most merchandising howto’s focus on the four core principles of merchandising: product, placement, pricing, and promotion.

Because most owners and managers of home improvement and building supply stores know their product, their pricing, and their promotions, this article will focus on placement and how to maximize sales through retail shopability and providing a meaningful digital experience.

Shopability

Create a Visually Appealing Display: First impressions matter, and an eye-catching display will attract customers and encourage them to explore the wide range of tools available. Invest in good lighting and visually appealing shelving, racks, and display

EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES FOR MERCHANDISING POWER TOOLS

cases that showcase the tools in an organized and accessible manner. We recommend using thematic arrangements to demonstrate tool applications, such as a “Complete Tool Kit for Home Renovations,” a “Professional Contractor’s Toolbox,” or a “DIY Deck Build.”

Cross-promote Tools: Leverage the power of cross-promotion to increase sales. Place power tools alongside related products, such as building materials, hardware, or accessories. For example, extension cords near air compressors or drill sets next to shelves of appropriate screws and fasteners. Highlighting complementary products makes the shopping trip easier for your customers and encourages them to make additional purchases, increasing total spend. Because many tools can be used in multiple applications, consider utilizing icons to indicate appropriate job uses. That way, customers understand the full benefits of investing in a particular tool.

Color Coding: A color-coded system combined with cross-promoted tools helps customers easily identify which fastener goes with what tool. It also has the added benefit of visually breaking up color uniformity which catches the eye and draws shoppers into the display. Many fastener companies have transitioned their packaging to a universal color-coding system, so look to your suppliers for guidance.

Pro-Tip Make sure each tool is paired with the correct fastener. It’s critical to have the right nail or screw or staple for the job to optimize each tool’s performance. Making grab-andgo easy for customers helps avoid frustration and returns for everyone involved.

Encourage Hands-on Demos: When space allows, encourage customers to try out the tools with well-designed hands-on demo stations. This interactive experience will build confidence in their purchase decisions and foster a sense of trust in your store’s expertise.

------------| FEATURE STORY
SENCO’S new headquarters in Cincinnati, Oh., features a merchandising space where dealer partners can see and test merchandising configurations.

Regularly update these demo stations with new or popular models to keep customers engaged.

Digital Experience

Provide Informative Product Information: Customers value product knowledge, so ensure that your sales team is well-versed in the features, benefits, and applications of each power tool. This expertise allows them to guide customers effectively and make informed recommendations. Clearly labeled pricing and product information tags will help customers make quick comparisons and decisions.

Highlight Safety Features and Benefits: Safety is of the utmost importance when working with power tools. Emphasize the safety features of each tool and how they contribute to accident prevention. Engage with customers on potential hazards and provide guidance on best practices for safe tool usage. Consider placing safety tips or guidelines in prominent locations within the store to reinforce your commitment to customer safety.

Leverage Digital Marketing Strat egies: Utilize digital marketing to

extend your reach beyond the physical store. Maintain an informative website that showcases your power tool offerings, including detailed product descriptions, user reviews, informative blog posts and links to tool manufacturers’ sites. Engage with customers and tool brands through social media platforms, sharing tips, tutorials, and showcasing the latest power tool innovations. Consider offering online purchasing options with in-store pickup or delivery for added convenience.

ºPro-Tip Have QR codes that link to videos and product guides easily visible and accessible within your display. This helps potential customers get all the information they need while in the store rather than leaving to go home and do research. It’s also a great way to save space over using multiple fliers or infographics! Not sure what to

There are a lot of ways to partner from collaborating on exclusive offers or promotions to co-marketing initiatives that can include product bundling, limited-time discounts, or special edition tools. Aligning your brand with reputable manufacturers helps provide credibility and access to a wider customer base.

Consider providing training sessions and workshops to educate customers on different power tool applications. These programs could be facilitated by your staff or in collaboration with manufacturers or industry experts. Offering after-sales support, such as repair, maintenance, and warranty services, can also foster long-term customer loyalty. BP

HARDWOOD INDUSTRY ROLLS OUT FIRST LARGE-SCALE AD CAMPAIGN

TO REIGNITE the allure of hardwood and address a decline in sales, the Real American Hardwood Coalition (RAHC) has initiated a consumer-oriented campaign promoting hardwood’s inherent benefits.

The Real American Hardwood Coalition’s goal is to educate consumers about the merits of authentic hardwood products, emphasizing their visual appeal, durability, longterm value, and sustainability.

RAHC recently launched a campaign called “Build Your World” on the Magnolia Network, led by former HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines. The venture offers a unique opportunity to educate the public on the advantages of Real American Hardwoods to a targeted audience of home renovation enthusiasts.

“An advertising campaign on this scale is a first for the American hardwood industry,” says Michael Martin, president and CEO of the National Wood Flooring Association. “For decades, misinformation has spread and the industry has seen market share slip away to alternative products that offer the wood look, without any of the benefits of real wood. Through the Build Your World campaign, our industry is showing how Real American Hardwood products offer unmatched aesthetics, natural durability, and lasting value—as well as why they are healthier for our homes and environment. And Magnolia Network is the perfect partner to share these stories.”

Developed by CANVAS United, the campaign relates the authenticity and attributes of Real American Hardwood products to the uniqueness and lifestyles of consumers. Five different vignettes capture the spirit of individuality in real-life settings, encouraging consumers

to envision how they can build their world with hardwood.

“As long-time partners to the RAHC, we’re excited to see the Build Your World campaign launch. We’re particularly proud of this campaign’s capacity to highlight both the emotional and rational benefits of hardwood,” said Mark Lainas, president of CANVAS United. “Leveraging entertaining yet poignant storytelling in the creative will feel relatable to consumers across the country, and allows us to showcase not just the beauty of American hardwoods, but the lasting value of the products.”

The integrated digital campaign, in partnership with the Magnolia Network, started July 29 and will run through Jan. 29, 2024, and is expected to reach 93 million consumers. It will run on the Magnolia Network TV channel, as well as on Magnolia and Discovery+ streaming platforms, plus digital and social media components.

Promoted will be domestically sourced and produced hardwood flooring, cabinetry, furniture and millwork.

The entire campaign is a significant step forward for the American hardwood industry, marking its first largescale advertising campaign, encompassing television, streaming platforms, digital outlets, and social media.

“This campaign is important to our industry’s future as customers are confronted with a range of fake wood products, such as vinyl plank flooring and laminated cabinets, that use plastics and coated paper products to try to mimic the authentic beauty of hardwoods,” noted Keith A. Christman, president of the Decorative Hardwoods Association. “Distinguishing Real American Hardwood from fakes helps protect customers while promoting the enduring value and beauty of real wood.” BP

TRUSS WORTHINESS

“This project wasn’t like a normal house,” explains Lenauer, who spent three years of his youth in Shriner’s Hospital. “You didn’t just design it and then build it. It was one of those

kind of projects. You can look back at everything you’ve ever done in your career and that’s the one thing that sticks out to me.”

When Pioneer Truss, Owensville, Mo., won the bid for the Ronald McDonald House job through BSI Contracting, St. Louis, Mo., lumber was selling for $1,500-$1,700 per thousand board feet. By the time construction began, however, lumber costs had dropped to $500-$600, a difference of $100,000.

In addition, Randy Carman, the president of Ambassador Supply, which purchased Pioneer Truss in 2021, instructed Lenauer to “donate $50,000 back on that project.”

Instead of keeping to the original bid, Pioneer Truss reduced their cost to the charity. “It just wouldn’t have been right. I don’t know if any of the other suppliers did that, but we saved them $150,000 on a $550,000 package of trusses. It’s just the right thing to do,” says Lenauer, who serves as Pioneer Truss’ GM.

Yet, what truly impressed Lenauer about this particular project were the constant improvements made all the way until it was complete. He adds that the truss designer on the job, Darin Fuchs, was very meticulous—the “kind of person you want on that project,” and pulled off the project without any problems.

“For someone like me and Darin, you can hang your hat on that, saying, ‘Hey I was part of that project!’ That project—72 rooms—is going to take care of 72 families and that’s gonna do a lot of good for our community in the St. Louis area,” adds Lenauer.

14 • building products digest • october 2023 building-products.com ------------| COMPETITIVE INTELLIGENCE
WHEN CHRIS LENAUER speaks about Pioneer Truss Co.’s 21 years of building trusses for multiple Ronald McDonald houses, it’s the latest project that sticks with him the most. PIONEER TRUSS owner Chris Lenauer (hard-hatless in center) recently visited the construction site of the newest Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis, Mo., calling on managers from BSI construction and the two female architects. His company has been a supporter of the charity for 21 years.

St. Jude is another charity that is important to Pioneer Truss. In fact, Pioneer has delivered to eight St. Jude homes in the past 10 years, “not accepting a penny for their work,” Lenauer shares. Instead, the $1.1-$1.3 million needed for each home was raised by Payne Family Homes who orchestrated a raffle for each project. In addition, most of the materials and labor that went into each home were donated.

“Everybody knows somebody or multiple people that have children that have some kind of disease that go through St. Jude,” Lenauer adds, “They may be at St. Jude, but they’re probably staying at the Ronald McDonald House or something similar to that too. So, it’s a great connection between those two.”

In addition to its work with Ronald McDonald Charities and St. Jude, the company has hosted Fort Leonard Wood’s U.S. Army engineer classes two to three times a year, 30 days at a time for 22 years. The engineers, who go around the world building bridges and other structures, are stationed at the Army base, which is located approximately 85 miles from Pioneer Truss.

And when one of Pioneer Truss’ longtime employees, Rita Medlock, was diagnosed with cancer this spring, the 120 Pioneer Truss employees, 80% who have been with the company more than five years, raised $30,000 with a barbecue and various fundraisers in one day to assist her with her cancer treatment.

It’s not surprising that Pioneer Truss would rally behind its employee, since it has always been a value-oriented company, Lenauer says. In fact, the company motto is “God, Family, Work Hard.”

It’s those same values that led Lenauer and his brothers Matt and Paul to leave their printing industry careers behind in California’s Bay Area in 2000 to return to their hometown of Owensville to buy Pioneer Truss and lead its then 40 employees.

Over time, the brothers grew the company four times in size by investing in equipment, people and property, Lenauer recollects. Paul passed away in 2005 and Matt retired after Ambassador Supply purchased the company.

Today, the company, which is locat-

ed 80 miles west of St. Louis, delivers roof and floor trusses and wall panels to an average of eight to 10 homes a day as well as large commercial projects, including hotels or condominiums at Lake of the Ozarks, and apartment complexes in Branson, Mo. The company averages $25 million annually from its one location.

“We’ve got a pretty good swath,” says Lenauer, who adds this year alone, they have shipped to projects as far away as Grand Rapids, Mi.; Nashville, Tn.; and Florida. “We just did a big set of trusses that went to the Kansas City Chiefs this spring.”

Currently, the company purchases much of its $10-$12 million annual allotment of lumber—mainly primarily southern yellow pine (trusses) and spruce (wall panels)—through Do it Best and several lumber brokers.

How does the company stay competitive against the half of dozen companies between St. Louis and the Lake of the Ozarks? Lenauer says it comes down to price and relationship. With a 48-hour turnaround on their quotes, and a delivery time of no more than 48 hours once the trusses have been built (they have a two- to four-week total turnaround on their projects), Lenauer asserts they are able to stay a step ahead of their competitors.

Looking forward, Lenauer says the company is on the move. With the “exciting group of people and quality people Ambassador attracts that have their priorities right,” one key to the

company’s future success in the next five to 10 years will be taking advantage of new technologies, such as 3D printing of homes.

“There’s just so many exciting things that are coming to this type of business that we haven’t seen in a long time,” Lenauer says, adding that innovations in truss building and 3D printing of walls will change how they build in the future.

“You can do curved walls; you can do whatever you want. You’re not hemmed into just square walls,” he adds. “3D printing can do pretty much anything you want it to do.”

And despite the company’s strong focus on innovation and advancement, it’s obvious that it will never lose sight of those in need. “It’s important to Ambassador and to us here at Pioneer to give back,” Lenauer says.

“I feel the need to give back,” he adds. “When you help people, it makes you want to be a better person. It makes you grateful. You’ve got your health... you just feel very fortunate, grateful and thankful.” BP

ACTING “AS IF”

SALES IS A TRANSFER of emotion, not information. Of course, there is a transfer of information, but the crucial part of any sales transaction is how we make our customer feel. Salespeople can say brilliant things and still not get the order because they sound terrible saying them. Master Sellers sometimes say things that taken out of context can sound stupid or crazy but in the moment of the sales call they say them with such confidence that their customer believes them and feels right about making the purchase.

Confidence is key. I tell my students all the time, “Your customer doesn’t know the difference between you and the best salesperson on your team unless you let them know.” This is not to say that we lie; we don’t say, “I am the number one salesperson at my company,” but we act and speak with the confidence of the Master Seller. This is called acting “As If” we are killing it even when we are on a cold streak or just starting in our career.

Is there a delicate balance between confidence and arrogance? Yes, but most sellers are so concerned with sounding arrogant that they bend over backwards to not sound so and sound timid and uncertain, transferring this emotion to their customer. It is difficult, if not impossible to give our money, time, and attention to someone who sounds “as if” they don’t believe in what they are promoting.

Prospecting

Looking for new business is arguably the most challenging thing we do as salespeople. How we deal with

the objections we get when trying to get someone who doesn’t know us to take us into their rotation of suppliers is daunting.

“I’m happy with my current suppliers,” “I buy direct,” “Your company burned me in the past” are some of the many objections we face when prospecting.

Most sellers are not ready to overcome these objections. They are not prepared and so they “wing” their responses off the top of their head and sound like it. The Master Seller, on the other hand, is ready. They know what they are going to say and thus can concentrate on how they sound—confident—and transfer this feeling to their potential customers. Does the Master Seller convert every new customer they try to sell? No, but their percentage of conversion is much higher.

“You’re Too High”

This is easily the most common objection we get in sales. Most sellers sound defeated by this objection. “When we get beat, get curious” is what I tell my students. We don’t sound defeated or aggressive, but curious. Ask questions. Often customers are talking about a product that is only vaguely similar to what we are promoting. The tally, quality, shipment might not be of the same value. In up markets customers could be giving us a price they heard three weeks ago.

Most sellers’ next move is to say, “Well is there anything else you are buying?” This question is fine but if, after thorough questioning we realize that our customer has made a better purchase, we ask (with confidence), “If I could get you a couple of trucks

with a similar tally and the same price, would you buy a couple from me?” You will be surprised how often they say yes.

Closing

Most sellers don’t ask for the order. Shocking but true. The majority of sellers present product and wait for the customer to decide.

Quotron: “I’ve got a truck of 2x4 14’s I can get into you for $550/MBF.” Then silently wait for the customer to decide.

Or even worse,

Quotron: “I’ve got a truck of 2x4 14’s I can get into you for $550/MBF, Whaddya think of that price?”

Master Sellers, on the other hand, have convinced themselves before they make the call that what they are offering is a good/great deal and is ready to promote their deal and ask for the order, again, with confidence.

Master Seller: “Susan, I’ve got a great deal on three trucks of 2x4 16’s. The market is moving, they are out of a mill you love, and they get into you at $570/MBF, which is a great price in this market. Do you want to put on all three?”

Sales is a transfer of emotion. Be confident and sell more.

3 QUESTIONS: SPECIALTY BUILDING PRODUCTS’ JEFF McLENDON

JEFF McLENDON is the president and CEO of Specialty Building Products, a leading distributor of specialty building products headquartered in Atlanta and operating 50 distribution centers including the U.S. Lumber, Reeb, DW Distribution, Millwork Sales, Amerhart and Alexandria Moulding brands. He serves on the boards of the National Association of Wholesalers, the National Association of Wholesalers Institute for Distribution Excellence, and Athletes in Action. He shares the challenges of his organization’s meteoric growth.

1 What drew you to the lumber/building materials business?

McLendon: I spent some time working in the technology space prior to joining U.S. Lumber in 2003.

The biggest attraction to this industry for me was and continues to be the people I get to work with. In contrast to some other industries, our industry is filled with real people doing real work.

To be in an industry where your word means something and where relationships last a whole career and beyond is rare. I’m so glad that I’ve had the privilege to become a part of this.

2 Was there any person or event in your career that has had an outsized effect in your journey?

McLendon: The great recession of 15 years ago certainly had a huge effect on my career. That was a galvanizing period for our company and, more specifically, for our core leadership team. Having to fight through such a tough time brought our team together a way that would not have been possible without crisis and set us up for all the growth we have experienced in recent years. The same team is running the company together today.

The downstream impact of our coming together during that tough period has served our organization very well. I’m constantly amazed that I get to lead every day alongside such a great team.

3 U.S. Lumber has made some significant acquisitions over the years. What is the biggest challenge in combining—or keeping separate—two major companies?

McLendon: While there are plenty of strategic and tactical challenges to bringing companies together, the main challenge is aligning people’s hearts and minds. We have acquired great companies with great cultures. While the cultures have been compatible, they are not the same. In order to move together and to be all we can be, we have to get to a common culture and a common way of seeing the world. As we have gotten larger, we spend more and more time on things that go to culture—training, leadership development, group dynamics, coaching, etc.

Anything that gets to hearts and minds is the hardest and the most rewarding thing that we can work on. This is the main job of leadership in a growing business.

WHERE DID ALL THE WORKERS GO?

RECENTLY I WAS sharing a cab with a client on my way to speak at a conference. He turned to me and said that he was interested to hear what I had to say about the state of the U.S. labor market. When I asked him what specifically he was hoping to hear in my talk, he said, “Well, I’m hoping you’re going to tell us where the workers went and when they’re going to come back. When are they going to get off the sofa and back to work? We’re dying out here and people just don’t seem to want to work anymore.”

If only I had a dollar for every time someone asked me this exact same question: where all the workers went and when they were going to come back. The truth: Everyone IS back to work. They’ve been back to work for a long time. The problem is, there just aren’t as many of them as there used to be. And when I explain this to people like my client, they seem surprised. And that, in turn, surprises me because these labor trends have been on the horizon for a long time. I think business owners have been ignoring the reality that there aren’t enough workers for all the jobs that are out there. In fact, as of August 1, there were almost 4 million more jobs than there were workers available to fill them. And what’s worse is that we don’t anticipate this changing anytime soon.

In fact, this has become my

personal and professional mission it seems—to travel the country speaking to business leaders, making them aware of what they should already know: there simply aren’t enough workers to satisfy all of the promises companies have made to their customers, let alone to support their growth projections.

And here’s why:

Eight Million Missing Workers –Since the COVID 19 pandemic, we have lost approximately eight million workers from the workplace. There are a number of places those workers went:

• According to Fed chairman Jerome Powell, close to 500,000 workers died from COVID.

• The Brookings Institute reports that 1.6 million full-time workers have left the workforce due to long COVID.

• Goldman Sachs reports that 2.5 million older workers retired earlier than anticipated and are not returning to the workforce.

• According to the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), there are nearly 2 million fewer women in the labor force due to childcare and familial needs, and

• JP Morgan Chase reports that there are 1 million fewer legal immigrant and non-native born workers than before COVID.

These 8 million workers represent approximately 5% of the overall workforce, a sizeable and noticeable number to be sure.

An Aging Workforce – Let’s face it, just like you and me, the United States is getting older. According to recent U.S. Census Bureau data, the nation’s median age is pushing 40 years old, and we’re aging faster than at any other time in our history. On average, 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 each and every day and by 2031, the number of people age 65 and over will number an estimated 75 million, almost double what it was just 15 years ago. As these workers age and retire, the number of Generation Z and following Alpha workers are not sizeable enough to replace exiting baby boomers.

Lower Birth Rate – The current U.S. birth rate is among the lowest it has ever been historically and projected to decrease over the rest of the century. We’re simply not giving birth to enough future workers to replace the workers that currently are and will retire. Unlike their older counterparts, Millennials are putting off marriage and childbirth until later in life and are having fewer children than at any time in our history.

Decreased Immigration & Refugee Resettlement – So if we’re not

20 • building products digest • october 2023 building-products.com
------------| TRANSFORMING TEAMS

giving birth to enough future workers, the strategy used historically and by other industrialized nations facing a similar aging workforce and low birthrate is to increase immigration. However, the U.S. has done the opposite. Between the years of 2013 and 2018, the annual net immigration stood at just under 1 million workers per year. Since COVID, immigration has largely dried up, with only 241,000 workers joining the workforce in 2021.

Employment Projections – According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, from 2021 to 2031, the U.S. economy is projected to add 8.3 million jobs. But we’re already 8 million workers short. And this shortage is anticipated to persist for the foreseeable future. And because of this, the unemployment rate is stuck below 4.2%, what economists say is full employment.

See what I mean? It’s kind of scary. It’s definitely something business leaders should be staying up at night thinking about. Or at least having some conversations with their best and brightest internal and external advisors discussing. Yet, I don’t see this happening. I get the sense that business owners are mistakenly believing that there is a pool of workers waiting on the

If this comes as a surprise to you, you’re not alone. And it’s not too late. What’s required is simply a mindset shift. And most business leaders that we work with have all of the tools to get ahead of the game: they are investing in retention and employee engagement initiatives, they are looking for technology and outsourced/offshore labor alternatives, they are upskilling their existing workers and they are investing in soft-skill training for their managers and supervisors who are the frontline defense for employee turnover and attrition.

The good news is that most of these initiatives cost little to no money to implement and to do well. And all of our clients are well-prepared for the task at hand, and of course we’re here to help them along the way. All it takes is a mindset shift. All it takes is dedication and commitment to do one and only one thing: to value employees for the valuable asset that they are. BP

Q. Can I restrict employees from using their smartphones while working? Or when in the workplace?

A. Yes, you can restrict most cell phone or smartphone access/usage even though the reason behind doing so may vary from situation to situation. This restriction can only be during work times so employees will usually need to be able to access and use their phones during breaks.

Employees’ phones and their usage can cause several issues. They can keep employees from properly and efficiently completing their job duties. They can distract others in the same space through the conversation or alert tones. If used for streaming music or videos, they can disrupt the environment as well as slow down internet speed. They can bring safety concerns by being a distraction or by their physical presence in some work areas.

If employees do not need their phones for work purposes, you can establish clear policy that they must be kept out of sight, perhaps locked in a drawer, locker, or vehicle except when used during an approved break period. If there is an emergency situation (i.e., the employee is waiting for a call from a doctor), then allow them to have it on a limited basis with approval.

CLAUDIA ST. JOHN

If employees use their phones for work, you can limit the usage to business purposes and prohibit distractions during work time. This can

CMPC BUYING KENTUCKY MILLWORK FACILITY

To enhance its presence in the U.S., Chilean-based Empresas CMPC SA has agreed to acquire Heritage Millworks (dba Powell Valley Millwork), Lexington, Ky.

“This is a fundamental step in the history of CMPC,” said chairman of the board Luis Felipe Gazitúa. “Although our products have been marketed in the United States for decades, we will now be able to produce them here, drawing on the experience and know-how of a specialist company like Powell Valley.”

A global corporation with more than 100 years of providing sustainable solutions, CMPC has long been an innovator in the marketing of wood, cellulose, packaging products, sanitary products, non-home products, and tissue paper.

“This investment decision is an important step in our strategic growth plan in the United States and brings us closer to our customers in North America, which is a fundamental pillar of our strategic plan,” said CEO Francisco Ruiz-Tagle.

Radiata pine holds a significant position as one of the most consumed millwork products in the U.S. The Powell Valley facilities have the capacity to supply volume programs across North America, as well as streamlined logistics with robust customer service.

“As the market continues to evolve, we recognize the need to adapt and seize opportunities to thrive in the dynamic landscape of our business,” said Juan Pablo Pereira Sutil, managing director, CMPC Wood Products. “By combining our production capabilities, we aim to secure a larger market share and introduce a broader range of products, including radiata pine and poplar offerings, while serving our customers with a much stronger value proposition.”

“The decision to partner with CMPC marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Powell Valley family,” said Jimmy Thornberry, president of Powell Valley Millwork.

Powell Valley has a strong history in manufacturing dating back to the early 1990s when Jimmy and his father, Jim Thornberry, began at their Jeffersonville, Ky., location. With nearly three decades of industry experience, the company has maintained growth in market share and profitability by introducing new programs while keeping a commitment to customer service.

CMPC and Powell Valley have aggressive growth plans in the U.S. and will begin expanding the assets at both production sites to maintain their existing poplar programs and facilitate the introduction of radiata pine manufacturing and distribution from Kentucky. Powell Valley currently employs more than 200 personnel with immediate demand for hiring skilled positions.

NATION’S BEST ENTERS GEORGIA WITH ADAMS

Nation’s Best, Dallas, Tx., has acquired two-unit Adams Building Supplies, Inc. of Georgia.

Founded in 1917, Adams is a fourth-generation business that caters to the high-end custom home builder segment with a heavy mix of premium lumber and building material products. With locations in Hartwell and Toccoa, Ga., they’re also strategically located midway between Nation’s Best locations in the Carolinas.

Sister and brother owners Andrea A. Anderegg and Julian Adams are excited for the future of their family business. “It takes a lot of dedicated people to run a successful business and we’ve been blessed to have a team of trusted managers and associates over the years. We’re thrilled to know that Adams Building Supplies will now be in the hands of an experienced home improvement company like Nation’s Best and that our valued team will continue to be there every day to serve our community.”

The Adams yards are the first Georgia-based businesses for Nation’s Best, now with 51 locations in 15 states. As part of Nation’s Best’s strategy, Adams will lease the real estate from the owners, maintain operations under its existing name, and retain the core team overseeing operations alongside Nation’s Best.

NWH, Frisco, Tx.-based manufacturer and supplier of hardwood lumber to North America, Europe and Asia, has acquired Post Hardwoods, Hamilton, Mi.

Post Hardwoods, established in 1980 by brothers Bob and Junior Post, is renowned for delivering high-quality and diverse hardwood lumber and logs from the Glacial region to their customers. The company’s 13,500-sq. ft. sawmill facility is situated on 20 acres, approximately 35 miles south of Grand Rapids.

“The acquisition of Post Hardwoods marks an important milestone in NWH’s growth,” said Nathan Jeppson, CEO of NWH. “Their impressive operations complement our customer commitment to reinforce and expand our position as a global leader in hardwood supply.”

Post Hardwoods’ extensive log sales business enhances NWH’s product range and flexibility, offering customers greater variety. NAWLA TRADERS MARKET PREVIEW 2023

Traders Market is here

NAWLA is back again this year, and we are proud to host Traders Market in Columbus, Ohio. Traders Market will be held November 8-10, 2023 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, in a city that is experiencing economic growth and a resurgence of retail, including many great restaurants for Traders Market attendees.

While the convenient and centralized location was a major factor in the committee’s decision to host this event in Columbus, the committee was also excited with the city’s incredible offerings to attendees—offerings that focus on Columbus’ accessibility, community feel and entrepreneurial spirit.

Each year, the NAWLA Traders Market continues to evolve and develop new experiences for the 1,000 to 1,500 professionals that make the decision to attend. Over the three-day event, attendees will have eight hours of show floor time to buy, sell and network with exhibitors and fellow attendees. This year will also include additional meeting rooms on the show floor, allowing attendees the opportunity to conduct business with current and new business partners without leaving the exhibit hall.

The Traders Market and Education Committees at NAWLA are also excited to bring forward a more direct and impactful

networking experience with our Birds of a Feather groups geared towards tenured professionals as well as those somewhat newer to the industry.

For decades, Traders Market has held a unique position among lumber and building material tradeshows as the only one focused almost exclusively on the lumber supply chain. Unlike other shows, the exhibitors are almost always manufacturers of lumber and lumber-related products, not machinery or other equipment providers.

Traders Market is unlike any other tradeshow and we are excited to welcome you to Columbus to experience that for yourself!

Meet & Greet with Archie Griffin

During the first two hours of the show, football great Archie Griffin will be on hand to greet attendees.

In the hometown of Ohio State University and just two hours south of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the North American Wholesale Lumber Association is excited to get the ball rolling with its annual NAWLA Traders Market Nov. 8-10 at the Columbus Convention Center this fall.

The gameplan: three days of learning, exhibitions and networking opportunities with fellow lumber professionals from all over the country Among the highlights you won’t want to miss:

Lumber Construction Outlook: Rotation or Retreat?

Presented by Ken Simonson

On the show’s opening morning, Thursday, Nov. 9, Ken Simonson will size up the lumber construction market.

Simonson has been chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America since 2001. He provides insight into the economy and what it implies for construction and related industries through frequent media

interviews, presentations, and the Data DIGest, his weekly one-page e-newsletter that goes to more than 20,000 subscribers.

Ken has more than 40 years of experience analyzing, advocating, and communicating about economic and tax issues. He is a Fellow and past president of the National Association for Business Economics, and he is co-director of the Tax Economists Forum, a professional meeting group he co-founded in 1982. After serving for 11 years as president and CEO of The Ohio State University Alumni Association, Griffin stepped back in 2015 to a consultant role as senior advisor in the Office of Advancement at Ohio State. During his tenure leading the OSUAA, Griffin led an expanded effort to embrace young alumni and began initiatives focusing on career assistance and establishing an Office of Volunteer Relations.

Known to the world as the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy, Griffin is also one of select group of Buckeyes to be named a three-time All American during his playing days from 1972-1975. Keynote Luncheon: Learn How to Motivate Like a Pro Presented by Ashley Fox

Ashley Fox is one of the NFL’s most well-respected journalists and a trailblazer in the ego-infused world of sports media. During her 24-year career, including seven years as a lead NFL reporter and analyst for ESPN, Ashley covered the United States’ most popular sport for the largest sports media network in the world. By being fair, honest and accountable, with unwavering professionalism and boundless optimism, Ashley earned the trust of professional athletes, coaches, owners, team

executives and league commissioners.

To Ashley, professional athletes by nature are some of the most highly motivated people on the planet. But developing high-performing individuals into a cohesive, championship team takes skill, consistency and patience. In the National Football League, there is on average a 22-percent annual turnover rate among head coaches. Time, therefore, is of the essence. During the keynote luncheon, Ashley will share stories from her experience as one of the only female on-air NFL analysts at ESPN and what she has learned from NFL coaches about how to extract peak performance through motivation.

Associations & Exhibitions

Association (CLA) Convention, first held in 1908, was revamped and restarted in 2013 by four industry associations in Eastern Canada: the Maritime Lumber Bureau (MLB), the Ontario Forest Industry Association (OFIA), the Québec Forest Industry Council (QFIC) and the Québec Wood Export Bureau (QWEB).

We hope to see you in Montréal next year!

Established in 1933, the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NELMA) is the rules writing agency for eastern white pine lumber and the grading authority for the SPFs-grouping of species that includes the Eastern Spruces, Balsam Fir, and Red Pine.

The next Montréal Wood Convention will take place on April 9-11, 2024 at the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth in Montréal.

After a record-breaking year of participation in 2023, the MWC team is looking forward to seeing you again next year for an actionpacked three-day event in the beautiful city of Montréal.

As always, the MWC provides a rich program including the trade show, conferences on key topics, and tons of networking opportunities. The detailed program will be announced later this fall.

The Montréal Wood Convention is the largest event in Canada for the wood products industry, with a typical attendance of around 1,000 delegates from North America and overseas.

The Montréal Wood Convention has continued to grow in popularity since its inception, despite a hiatus due to the global pandemic of COVID-19. Each year, the varied program and the quality of participating companies reflect the latest market trends and the many changes in the industry.

The event, which has its roots in the Canadian Lumbermen’s

NELMA is one of six agencies in the U.S. and Canada that publishes rules for lumber grading used by the industry. The association is a non-profit organization with member mills located in the Great Lakes and Northeastern regions that manufacture over 1.5 billion bd. ft. of lumber in construction and appearance product grades. NELMA’s staff includes 12 inspectors that provide quality control assistance to help ensure on-grade lumber is being sold in the marketplace. NELMA is a leading agency for export wood packaging certification and the marketing voice for the wood products industry in the Northeast and Great Lakes.

Go to www.nelma.org for an extensive library of resources that will assist in the sale and use of wood products manufactured by NELMA’s mills.

logo and have created versions that combine the two, which will be portrayed most often in our marketing materials.

We have implemented a handful of major capital improvement upgrades within the last year to help maximize our efficiencies. Two of the most significant projects have been installed in our plywood plant: a new auto plugger and veneer dryer. Pacific Wood Laminates is the first mill in the world to have artificial intelligence in its scanning systems within both the veneer and plywood plants. This technology provides greater accuracy and consistency for clipping solutions on the green end with repetitive scanning at the dryer.

Along with our continued reinvestment in our technology and equipment, we are making the same investments in our people, our top priority. We have implemented the largest wage increase we have seen across the board to stay competitive and ensure that our employees can take care of themselves and their family members. We have also revisited our job bidding procedures to emphasize the importance we place on promoting within the company. This allows employees to advance into higher-paying roles, gain new skills, and even move to a different department if they want to learn a new product line.

Stop by our booth at NAWLA this year, where our plywood sales manager, Rob Rowe (robr@socomi.com), and a few other team members will proudly answer any additional questions about our company. For more information, visit www.socomi.com.

Under the reputable SOCOMI brand, we proudly provide over 500 reliable family-wage jobs for our local communities. To shed light on all that we do, we have reconfigured our branding to communicate that South Coast Lumber and Pacific Wood Laminates are under the same ownership. We have incorporated the SOCOMI text into each primary

Western Forest Products [Booth 524]

West Bay Forest Products has been big on cedar since 1988. In fact, for the past 35 years, we’ve focused nearly entirely on western red cedar. Our business is built on it.

From the very beginning, we’ve prioritized honesty, loyalty and communication with our customers, all while delivering high-quality cedar products. While we’ve had to adapt to the market, that commitment will never change.

Over the years, West Bay has underwent transformative changes to better position ourselves in the market, but cedar remains our cornerstone. We now control our own fiber supply—namely owning our own sawmills and remanufacturing facilities. This comprehensive approach allows us to oversee the entire manufacturing process from log to lumber, paving the way for timely order fulfillment and unmatched consistency in cuts and finishes. This level of control also allows us to offer tailored patterns and dimensions, giving customers improved flexibility in their sales programs.

West Bay has also complemented our offering of top-quality solid cedar by introducing West Bay NextGen Cedar to our product lineup. NextGen Cedar is an engineered cedar product crafted by fingerjoint-

Western Forest Products is emerging as a leader in the branded wood products sector. Wood building material is, typically, an unbranded product category. Piles of manufactured wood often sit facelessly next to each other, with little obvious distinction between quality, sourcing or company reputation. Western has introduced a new branding approach which makes it easy for professionals to confidently identify and choose products they trust when purchasing through their valued distribution partners.

WFP TRUESTYLE: The premier brand for natural wood siding, soffits, decking, trim & fascia and outdoor living products, TRUESTYLE is ideal for the customer requiring uncompromising appearance and quality while staying true to their individual style.

WFP COAST TIMBERS: As the leading brand in pacific softwood appearance grade timbers, customers rely on COAST TIMBERS for outdoor living, interior architecture and industrial projects.

Builders, architects, homeowners and other customers across the globe have been choosing Western’s specialty wood products for their beauty, durability and environmental benefits.

Bennett Lumber Products’ production of quality dimension lumber—Douglas fir, white fir, Engelmann spruce, lodgepole pine, Idaho white pine, inland red cedar, and ponderosa pine—reaches 180 MMBF annually. Based in Princeton, Id., the company has approximately 70,000 acres of forestland in northern Idaho and eastern Washington.

A producer of dimensional lumber, industrial lumber and lumber patterns, Bennett is committed to providing quality products and sound environmental practices every day. The family-owned company has two mills—one in Princeton, Id., and one in Clarkston, Wa., both designed for efficiency, safety and production. The company works to provide high-quality lumber products while practicing sustainable land management principles with its main forestry goal that aims to meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Established in 1999 by Jeff and Cheryll Bowers, Bowers Forest Products, Beavercreek, Or., fulfilled a need in lumber remanufacturing, and for more than 20 years has produced and distributed specialty wood products across the United States. We operate our company with honesty and integrity, and our customers see the difference.

Bowers Forest Products offers a variety of products. Our primary offering includes cedar planter boxes for the nursery industry, construction/survey lath, tile-battens, furring strips, pallet/crating material, blocks for the wood truss industry, lattice panels, garden trellis, post caps, tongue and groove boards, and deck balusters. To produce such a diverse product line, we purchase between 600-800 truckloads of lumber annually. Other services include custom remanufacturing, kiln drying, planing, trimming, and ripping and resawing.

Bowers Forest Products is also excited to continue expanding the Woodway line of products. “Woodway Products is known to be high-end and has a great following. We are excited to expand this line into other

if left untreated. C&D’s decking is available S4S, as 2x4s, 2x6s, 2x8s and various lengths and grades, including Appearance.

Larger incense cedar logs are used to mill C&D’s precision-milled timbers. Gorgeous for inside or out, these timbers are a hit for architectural features signature homes and buildings. The timbers are available in various sizes in a rough band-sawn texture for exposed applications.

C&D also produces 2” lumber in dimensional grades that buyers repeatedly choose because of its low shrinkage and workability, plus all the reasons it wins other product categories. These types of products are ideal for remanufacturing and low-cost decking as well.

Those looking for a distinct outdoor product for steps, raised beds and features love the pecky landscape timbers C&D produces from incense cedar. These 100% natural timbers are an environment friendly alternative to toxic pressure-treated timbers, particularly in locations for children, pets or food production.

Beyond its products, C&D is a valued supplier because of its endurance in the industry, and diligent customer service and competitive pricing.

At C&D Lumber Co., incense cedar has been an instrumental part of our century old history. At times supply can be limited, but fortunately we currently have an ample supply that will carry you into the 2024 building season. Incense cedar boasts dimensional stability, extreme durability and earns top marks in checking, warping, insulation value and even paint-holding (though trust us, it’s too pretty to paint). It grows slowly and in limited locations, making it a unique species to the West Coast and thanks to sustainable harvesting in partnership with its sister timber company, Silver Butte Timber, and other log suppliers, C&D Lumber has been able to offer incense cedar products for many years.

Because of its durability and aesthetic appeal, the vast majority of the incense cedar that C&D secures is cut into decking. Its fine, uniform grain makes it a crowd-pleaser, and its price remains competitive with western red cedar. The oils that give incense cedar its trademark clean scent serve as all-natural preservatives, helping it stand up for years even

perform forest restoration work at scale within the national forests of northern Arizona.

Arizona has experienced multiple catastrophic wildfires and over the last two decades with more that 1.47 million acres of natural forests having been destroyed, roughly the size of the entire Grand Canyon National Park.

Wildfires are fueled by understory such as brush and smaller trees. The fires have become more destructive and dangerous to fight as forests have become increasingly overgrown. Restoration Forest Products’ forest restoration process can safely and responsibly thin the forest floors which creates a healthier ecosystem and mitigates wildfire threats and post-wildfire destruction. Ultimately, it also makes room for larger, healthier trees to thrive.

Over the last number of years, Restoration Forest has developed a vertically integrated approach to restoring forests at scale by converting the unique log diet into a wide variety of board products. The approach has been necessary to first and foremost create a business model that could effectively combat the effects of frequent wildfires while still converting the available resources into environmentally sustainable wood products.

Solid lumber as well as fingerjointed and edge-glued stock will be offered in S4S, pattern stock and a variety of surface textures. Common products include trim, fascia, siding and paneling.

At Neiman’s, we’re proud to be a fourth-generation family-owned business, established in 1936 in Upton, Wyoming. We are committed to maintaining a healthy forest and integrate sustainability throughout all of our production practices, products and stewardship services—leaving forests in better condition for future generations.

We put the same thought and care into all of our products. Neiman Premium Studs are sustainable and stable and are an essential component of any construction project, providing a strong framework for walls, ceilings and other structures. Made from high-quality lumber, they are carefully graded to ensure they meet or exceed industry standards for strength and durability. We proudly specialize in pine boards providing versatility and durability for all projects. They add warmth and character to any space. New! The Combi-CB15-5E

The materials handling specialist Combilift is marking 25 years in business by introducing a number of new models in 2023. The CombiCB15-5E is a further addition to Combilift’s ever-growing range of electric models which offer powerful performance, extensive battery life and unrivalled ergonomics.

It boasts the distinction of being the shortest 15,500-lb. capacity counterbalance truck on the market whilst also featuring multidirectional ability and excellent maneuverability. This will be of particular benefit for companies that deal with long and bulky products such as those in the lumber sector, as it enables the versatile, safer and space saving handling of these loads, even in very confined spaces.

RoyOMartin announces $30 million in capital expenditures for modernization projects at the Oakdale and Chopin, Louisiana, manufacturing plants.

RoyOMartin facilities experience no reductions in force or production curtailments throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Giving back to the state, President and COO E. Scott Poole serves on the Louisiana Legislative Advisory Task Force on Economic Recovery.

Expansion of our Texas subsidiary Corrigan OSB, L.L.C., begins with the construction of a second oriented strand board facility near the original site. 2021 was the safest year in RoyOMartin history, even as the company continued full-time operations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Going Strong Through the Pandemic 2020 2019 2021 2022

Last year, the company announced a $95M investment in modernizing its plywood facility. The Land and Timber department marked 15 years of safety and the timberland management operations celebrated 20 years of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) (FSC-C009079) certification. RoyOMartin and its team members meet annually to plan for another century of quality products and sustainable growth.

latest generation of models is kitted out with top quality components that ensure sophisticated ergonomics for a stress-free in-cab environment. The Combi-CB15-5E is no exception: features in the spacious cab include generous glazing for excellent all-round visibility, the tilting steering column, hydraulic steering and the Grammer MSG65 seat.

The newly developed Auto Swivel Seat is also available as an option. This automatically engages and swivels the seat and armrest 15° to the right or left to accord with the direction of travel selected by the operator—reducing driver strain, particularly when travelling in reverse.

What sets the Combi-CB15-5E apart from other forklifts is its gas strut suspension cab, which uses components such as those found in large-scale industrial machinery with cab suspension. Combined with the super-elastic tires this guarantees the smoothest of rides over uneven or less than perfect ground conditions such as those often encountered in lumberyards.

The internationally patented and Red Dot awarded independent electric traction provides all front and rear drive wheels with 100% traction control. This negates the need for differential lock on slippery surfaces and significantly reduces long load momentum twisting when travelling sideways.

Combilift CEO and co-founder Martin McVicar said: “The increased capacities that we are offering in our electric range will answer the demand for ever more powerful products which at the same time help companies to achieve their aims for more sustainable operations.”

ning, design, and construction of both LBM facilities and retail buildings, as well as site renovations. They work as a general contractor and have provided more rack systems and pre-engineered steel buildings in more lumberyards across the U.S. than any other supplier.

Some examples of efficiencies:

• Jennings Builders Supply & Hardware went from pole barns to T-sheds and in the first year, labor costs decreased by 35%, while sales increased by 20%.

• Southern Lumber & Millwork lost two of their seven acres to a highway expansion but wanted to keep the same number of SKUs. Drive-thru buildings, sheds, and racking systems enabled them to utilize vertical space and retain their inventory.

• Griffin Lumber and Hardware’s new location was not very large, but it needed to function as a lumberyard, a retail store, and a door manufacturing shop. Stack racks minimize the footprint of the door shop and provided efficient handling of the finished products. The layout of the yard, including wide aisles between lumber sheds, keeps materials and shipments moving efficiently.

When a lumberyard is designed well and outfitted with the right buildings and storage solutions, there are numerous operational gains, or wins, achieved: better flow, better handling, and a better customer experience, along with reduced cull and labor costs.

Yet, many owners don’t realize how much more efficient their yards could be or they assume improvements would be cost-prohibitive. Often, it’s not until circumstances force them to make changes, or they build a yard at a new location, that they appreciate the limitations of their old facilities.

CT Darnell/Sunbelt Rack has built close to 1,500 buildings and worked on over 1,000 lumberyards. Their offerings include site plan-

An American Classic

It’s been 90 years since brothers Elbert and Hinton began producing Southern Yellow Pine timbers for their new company, Boozer Lumber. Along the way, William Owsley joined the family business and the first BOOZERBEAM was born. A lot has changed since then, but we haven’t. Today, BOOZERBEAM is still crafting high-quality glulams in Anniston, Alabama, where it all began. As we move into the future, we continue to offer a five-star customer experience and an American classic glulam with a significant history from the beginnings of Engineered Wood. products, symbolizing excellence in manufacturing through state-ofthe-art technology. Our products come from our own plantations of radiata pine that have been cultivated to achieve the highest quality fiber. CMPC’s 2 million+ acres of forest assets, located in Chile, Brazil, and Argentina, are certified by FSC and CERTFOR-PEFC, which guarantees the protection of the native forest and biodiversity; thus, ensuring the highest standards of sustainable forest management.

Powell Valley Millwork, with two manufacturing sites located east of Lexington, Kentucky, is CMPC’s first acquisition in the U.S., serving as the foundation of our expanding presence in the American market. This makes CMPC the first manufacturer to offer both poplar and radiata pine to the U.S. market with a commitment to customer service and partnerships across North America.

With over three decades of industry experience, Powell Valley has consistently excelled in crafting top-tier poplar mouldings and millwork for a diverse customer. By harnessing CMPC’s extensive manufacturing capabilities and synergizing them with Powell Valley’s domestic production capacity, we can offer a broader range of products, accompanied by strategic proximity to ensure streamlined logistics and exceptional customer service.

Hardel Mutual Plywood Corp. [Booth 307]

Hardel Mutual Plywood Corp. is celebrating 70 years as a cooperative in the plywood industry—the only cooperative plywood mill in the U.S. Since opening in 1952, Hardel has grown from the capability of making 12 different types of panels to now carrying over 1,000 different plywood products.

Its production is more than eight times of what it was then, and has more than doubled in the last seven years.

The company recently installed a new state-of-the-art press for Medium Density and High Density Overlays. The chrome platen overlay press is capable of producing the smoothest possible finishes in MDO and HDO, helping Hardel to maximize its product line.

Offering such a vast product line of over 1,000 different plywood product makes it easier for customers to mix loads. This saves them time and money by being able to buy all their plywood needs in one place. The company is like a “Super Market” for plywood. It also has the capability to build and customize panels specific to a customer’s needs.

As the country’s only cooperative plywood mill, Hardel has 124 working shareholders and consequently experiences very little turnover. Most employees have more than 15 to 20 years of experience. Hardel employees are highly experienced in the mill and have a strong sense of pride in the work they perform. They literally take ownership in their work.

Hardel continues to look to future growth and adapt where there is need in the plywood industry. That’s why Hardel has grown and evolved into one of the most diverse and state-of-the-art plywood mills in the U.S.

Software

DMSi is a leading provider of business software to the building materials industry.

Our Agility ERP is a complete inventory and order-management system for lumber businesses. It handles everything from sales and eCommerce through purchasing, delivery, and invoicing. Integrated apps for sales, CRM, proof of delivery, and warehouse management bring all your processes and data into one centralized system.

Agility is designed around the unique products and processes of building materials businesses. For instance, it uses a single item code to track multiple lengths of a product, simplifying and streamlining your catalog. A completely integrated General Ledger with drill-down reporting makes it easy for your staff to email invoices, research issues, and process payments.

At DMSi, we focus exclusively on building materials businesses.

Here’s a breakdown of a few key features:

1. Project Management: Efficiently manage complex projects, increasing your ability to handle more projects simultaneously or take on larger projects.

2. Material Status (Take Off): Track the status of materials from when they’re ordered to when they’re shipped to when they’re invoiced. This helps ensure accurate billing and prevents overbilling or underbilling.

3. RFPs to Multiple Suppliers: Send Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to

CABLE RAIL CLIPS

New RailFX Express Mount Brackets make installing cable railing faster and easier for professional installers, eliminating the need to drill holes through wood deck posts.

To install cable railing, contractors simply install the appropriate bracket on the exterior of all wood deck posts, feed the cable through the brackets, and tighten the cables to secure it. The brackets are only viewable from the outside of the deck, creating the illusion of “floating” cables and improving sightlines to the scenery beyond.

SELF-ADHERED & UV-RESISTANT

Benjamin Obdyke has launched a self-adhered version of its popular InvisiWrap UV-resistant housewrap.

Like the original, InvisiWrap SA is specially designed for projects with open-joint cladding. It offers enhanced UV protection to accommodate increased exposure, and its black, non-printed facer ensures an ideal aesthetic and shadows between the gaps. The addition of a continuous, 100% acrylic adhesive provides further protection by sealing around cladding fasteners to help maintain the integrity of the air barrier.

It has a split-release liner for easy application and positioning. The acrylic adhesive is repositionable during installation; once an installer is satisfied with the wrap placement, they apply pressure to fully activate the bond. No seam tape is required.

A polyester non-woven housewrap with a polyester coating, InvisiWrap SA is reportedly tougher than standard housewraps.

DECK INSTALL COMBO KIT

Simpson Strong-Tie has introduced a new, lowercost combo kit for its popular Quik Drive Cordless PRO300SG2 auto-feed screw driving system.

Powered by a DeWalt cordless driver motor, the system is designed for stand-up operation to make deck and subfloor installations fast and easy, and it’s now available without having to purchase the duplicative charger and 5-amp batteries that most contractors already own.

A powerful 2,000-rpm, 20V brushless driver motor matched with a lightweight extension arm make the system more ergonomic than corded and pneumatic systems. With improved low-torque designs to Strong-Tie’s collated Deck-Drive DSV Wood screws and Strong-Drive WSV Subfloor screws, contractors can now drive more screws per battery charge than ever before.

FLASHBACK: VARIABLE PRICING

TODAY, variable pricing is everywhere—from entertainment venues that charge different admissions for each day calculated by predicted demand to retailer websites that “customize” prices based on how much they think each individual customer can afford.

Three decades back, Building Products Digest was fortunate to have as an occasional contributor the hardware merchandising pioneer Joe Samulin, co-founder of Handy Dan and Handy City-turnedhome center consultant. In our October 1993 issue he brought dealers up to speed on the then-novel concept:

“Variable pricing, which I prefer to call visual merchandising, is not new. For years, merchants have used it to increase profits. I will lay claim to bringing the technique, which can add up to more margin dollars to the attention of many large and small operations.

“It all began in the early ‘70s when I was part of the training team in the Handy Dan chain. While we were on a routine tour of a store, some idiotic pricing jumped out at me. The 2” and 3” mending plates were priced the same. The 2” and 2-1/2” barrel bolts were priced the same. Zinc and brass in the same sizes were priced the same.

“This kind of stupid pricing went on and on because we were mechanically applying a set departmental margin to the manufacturer’s cost. After I convinced management that large should cost more than small and that because customers prefer brass they will pay more for it, the pricing policy became ‘what is the value in the eye of

the beholder—the customer.’

“Because we eyeballed items for increased margin, I gave the system the handle ‘visual merchandising.’

“Some years later, someone latched onto it as their idea with the ‘variable pricing’ tag. The rule of thumb was anything under $5 was fair game. Above that level we used extreme caution on any competitively shopped item.

“I used this approach to great advantage when I took over a troubled division. We took mark-ups of over $100,000, then for the next three months gave it all back in strong lead ad items. By the end of the year we were in the black in sales and profits with a strong, low-price competitive image.

“I didn’t think any other chain could be as dumb as we were, but I found lots of others following the same pricing policy. I went to K-Mart to buy a molly bolt and discovered the 1/2” and 1” priced the same. I went to Sears. The same idiocy existed. Not only was Sears making the same mistake, they were the lowest price in town and neither they nor the public were aware of it.

“I took some pictures with the Sears price tickets in full view and used them in an article published in 1979.

“Three weeks later, Sears and K-Mart made price adjustments and never even thanked me. In my travels I began to take pictures and slides of major chains using the same idiotic pricing and showed them in my seminars.

“Now, more than 10 years later, I find that most companies have forgotten this important avenue to more margins

Just as for this month’s issue, 30 years ago the front cover of the October 1993 edition of Building Products Digest highlighted Wolmanized preserved wood.

and profits. They have become too involved in putting out fires. Variable pricing has been relegated to ‘when we have time’ and forgotten. Because it is a grueling process, it’s easy to put on the back burner.

“If you are in a non-competitive area, variable pricing will go right down to the bottom line. If you face tough competition, it can be used in a strong loss leader program to create a competitive image.

“Another important point: all my business life the controller’s office has come out with ‘at a 2% net profit, you need 50 times that in sales.’ An additional $5,000 in sales will generate $100 in net profits.

“Nonsense. If you are profitable, $5,000 in additional sales at a 30% margin will put $1,500 on the bottom line. If you are profitable, you have already covered all your expenses, rent, utilities, salaries and other costs.

“Adding sales by using plus margins will put more dollars on the bottom line and at a lot larger amount than 2% of the additional sales.

“Variable pricing works for both large and small chains. Many stay alive because they practice it.”
