fter discussion, and comments from many employees of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Monroe County Commission is going back to the drawing board. On Tuesday, July 25, the commission will consider how it can save more than $3.3 million on the group health insurance policy for county employees that is self-funded. “At our June 20 meeting we passed approximately 40 changes to our health insurance plan,” said Commissioner David Rice. “Since then, our staff and our actuaries have been involved in the mind-boggling task of computing what type of financial impact each and every one of those changes will have.” Rice said he expected the data to be available before the next meeting. The commission plans to reconsider some of those actions, but did not specify which.

At stake is the county’s promise to cover health care costs for employees not only while they are employed, but also after they retire and until they reach Medicare eligibility. It was a recruitment tool, many of the sheriff’s office employees said, that worked. Lt. Nancy Alvarez said she started in 1986 at a salary of $12,900. Donna Moore of the Human Resources department in the sheriff’s office echoed that statement. “I began in 1990 at a salary of $14,000 a year.” Both said the benefits package made up for the pay stub’s size. Tasked with informing staff about the recent changes to health insurance, Moore said, caused four corrections officers to resign on the spot. Commissioner George Neugent called into question the formality of the benefits agreement. “Any promises that were made to you,” he said, addressing the public at the Marathon Government Center on Wednesday, “only extended as far as the next budget year. If the money is not in the budget, there is no promise.” He also said this is the only issue in his

Tiny, Princess and Kona cavort at a foster family home for dogs. CONTRIBUTED
FOSTER FAMILIES A WAY TO KEEP PETS OUT OF SHELTERS JULIE BOTTERI
www.keysweekly.com
H
ere in the Keys, pet ownership gets complicated. Rentals don’t always allow animals, no matter the size. However, if you have a home, apartment or condo that IS approved, is it possible to find joy in pet ownership without a lifetime commitment or full financial responsibility? Yes! For my husband Randy and I, it filled the void after the consecutive loss of each of our three senior Labrador retrievers, and it influenced our decision to open our home for fostering. In August 2014, after some no-pet-guilt vacation time, we opened BTA (“Behind The Airport,” a pet-centric neighborhood) Big Dogs Foster Home. Since then, we have fostered 11 dogs for MarrVelous Pet Rescues, a no-shelter/foster-only model, and the Florida Keys SPCA.
We fostered two dogs immediately. Gabe, a young, high-strung mix lasted only a week in our foster care after several months in a shelter kennel; the adoptive family was in love with his boisterous spirit and Rottweiler colors. Wow, this is easy, we thought. We had Gunner for about a year. He was a senior American bulldog/boxer mix who languished at the shelter a shocking three years, though he spent his last days in happy foster retirement. His calm manner helped heal and socialize a tiny, newly vaccinated Chihuahua puppy, and teach Princess, an anxious and edgy shepherd mix, some common social skills she lacked. The BTA Home has also welcomed a lawless pair of male 100-plus-pound yellow Labs, black female shepherd mixes with extreme shyness or anxiety, and currently, Tiny, a white American bulldog/boxer mix. After three months with us, Tiny’s playful self has emerged. Princess is our “foster failure.” We adopted her after nine months during which there wasn’t a single call from an interested family. Then we adopted Kona, a black pocket Lab from FKSPCA in Key West. (Black dogs get overlooked in shelters, so we usually look at them first.) Is it hard to give up a dog you’ve been fostering? Sure. You get attached. But when they’ve found a family for good, who is going to love them, their faces are pure joy.
The Florida Keys SPCA assists foster families with pet food, medications and other special needs. Families also earn a tax deduction. More importantly, there is a huge need for foster families during the hurricane season, as a threatening storm forces the shelters to close and displace animals. To learn more about becoming a foster parent, contact the Florida Keys SPCA in Marathon at 305-743-4800 or email Tara Vickrey, Tara@fkspca.org. In Key West, contact Lindsey Thompson at 305-294-4857 or Lindsey@fkspca.org. Or, friend BTA Big Dogs Foster on Facebook or visit fkspca.org.

‘I love mixing PR and science’
Which TV, movie or superhero character is your alter ego? Monica Geller (Courtney Cox on “Friends”).
“I
like to talk about mosquitoes, not myself,” said Beth Ranson, seriously. Ranson’s job is pretty important nowadays, as the public relations officer for Florida Keys Mosquito Control District. She is a bit of an anomaly, with a background of journalism, public relations and pharmaceutical sales. A graduate of the University of Richmond, (Go Spiders!) in her home state of Virginia, Ranson worked as a journalist and producer for Fox TV. Coming to Key West years ago because “it was the Caribbean I could drive to,” she started her own PR firm and on a whim answered an ad for the mosquito control district three years ago. Now she is the voice we hear on the radio and the one keeping the public, and newspapers, in touch with all the correct info from Zika to GM mosquitoes. Ranson is one of the busiest PR reps in Florida, but she takes it in stride, saying, “I never in my life dreamed I would know this much about mosquitoes, but I love mixing PR and science.”
Full Name? Elizabeth B. Ranson
If you were invisible, what would you do in Key West? Explore all the homes and gardens of Key West – there are so many hidden oases in Key West. What is your nerdiest passion? The New York Times crossword puzzle. Favorite guilty pleasure? Massages.
NO BUGGING HER
Do you have a life credo or motto? Live each day as if it’s your last … this would be more of an aspiration.
What’s one thing you have yet to achieve on your “bucket” list? And one thing you did achieve? To do: Hot air balloon ride. Done: Hike the Inca trail. Weirdest question/or misconception anyone ever asked you about mosquito? If you got bit by a GM mosquito would you become a super mosquito along the lines of Spiderman?
If not with Mosquito Control, what would your secret dream job be? Host of my own travel show. For lunch with one famous person, whom would you choose? Betty White (I mean who wouldn’t want to have lunch with Betty White). Finish these sentences.. My friends and family would describe me as … sarcastic and friendly with occasional bouts of extreme “hanger.”
Worst nickname? Keebler.
What is something you never thought would happen in your life, and surprisingly changed everything? Live on a boat and reduce my world to 200 square feet. When you move into that small of a space, you realize how little you need to be happy.
If you could grant Key West one wish what would it be? That it will magically float and avoid any effects of sea level rise.
“I never in my life dreamed I would know this much about mosquitoes, but I love mixing PR and science.”
Do you guys use a lot of bug spray? Recommend a certain kind? I actually do not use any bug spray. However, we would recommend bug sprays that contain DEET. With the outbreak of Zika, Florida Keys Mosquito Control gained a lot of attention; how did it affect your job? One of my main jobs is community awareness of mosquitoes and the diseases they can/may carry. Zika sparked a renewed interest in mosquitoes and more community organizations were interested in having FKMCD make presentations on mosquitoes. One thing every Keys resident should know about mosquitoes (and would make your job easier) ... Go! The most dangerous mosquitoes we have in the Keys, the aedes aegypti, breeds in water that humans create by
My autobiography would be titled … “The Diary of a Traveling Renegade.” One secret I shall never tell … is what makes my father’s Dark n’ Stormy so tasty. When I go, I will go … hopefully with a broken body, a good mind and a lifetime of interesting stories.

PIGEON KEY IS MOVING
(Not the island, silly)
T
he Pigeon Key Foundation of the Florida Keys now has new Marathon-based headquarters. It’s moved from Knight’s Key to the location of the former Pancho’s restaurant. The visibility from the highway, and its proximity to the Hyatt Place at Faro Blanco docks and historic lighthouse, make for a perfect fit, according to the foundation’s director. “The Spottswood family and Hyatt Place have really gone out of their way to make this partnership a reality,” said Kelly McKinnon, director of Pigeon Key Foundation. “They recognize the importance of keeping the island open for all to enjoy.” For visitors, the trip over to Pigeon Key in the middle of the Seven Mile Bridge span can only be accomplished by private boat or the foundation’s ferry, as the Old Seven Mile Bridge is closed to foot traffic during construction. The $12 ticket ($9 for locals) leaves from the Hyatt Place docks and includes a tour and museum access. “We are all very excited about having the Pigeon Key Foundation base their operations here at Faro Blanco,” said Karen Thurman of Hyatt Place. “We think starting their tours here at our historic lighthouse will be great for their passengers and, of course, having the excursions out to Pigeon
Key departing from right here on property will be ideal for our hotel guests — and surely a highlight of their vacation.” For now, the Pigeon Key Visitor’s Center is a temporary structure, as the foundation and Hyatt work on plans for a permanent structure. McKinnon said he envisions a “wrap” on the building — an aerial image of Pigeon Key — to advertise the headquarters sooner rather than later. Right now, the little island is alive with activity during the peak of its “education season,” teaching summer campers all about the Keys ecosystem and watersports. Capital projects for the coming year include additions to the shark pool and new roofs. In other words, there’s lots to see and do while at the same time it’s a great place to relax on the outer edges of civilization. “Visitors are welcome to come and stay all day, taking the last ferry home,” McKinnon said. The former headquarters for the organization, the red caboose from Flagler’s Railroad, is moving to Crane Point Museum in Marathon where it will serve as an attraction and office space. The move makes way for construction of a new resort on Knight’s Key. — Weekly Staff report

M
arathon has its first food truck. Nenis Mobile Food operates lunch hours in front of Ivan Tile at 6465 Overseas Hwy. In the afternoon, it moves to Produce Paradise, the fruit stand across from The Home Depot. Find it at either location Monday through Friday. According to truck operators Jose Soto (cook) and Eylen (cashier) the best sellers in the first month have been the steak sandwich and the philly cheesesteak. It also makes a really great “Cuban” pizza. For now, the menu is pretty simple — sandwiches and personal-size pizzas. And Jarritos — a Mexican soft drink that’s pretty hip by anyone’s standards. They look forward to offering a more complicated menu including “chiviricos” — a Cuban dessert delicacy of fried dough sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. That has to wait on changes to the city’s food truck law (see sidebar). The Cuban-born couple has lived in Marathon for seven years and is raising two young children. The truck is owned by local Pedro Rodriguez, a cousin.
Food trucks & the law Marathon City Councilman Steve Cook raised the food truck issue recently at a council meeting. Current law complies with all state and federal regulations, but limits food trucks to two consecutive hours of operation on private property (with owner permission) and just 10 minutes on a public right-of-way. Cook said he fielded a couple calls on the issue, but thinks it will be a simple matter to tweak the ordinance. “I think our current law was cut and pasted from a rule for ice cream trucks. Food trucks need to be able to sit down and stay somewhere. I’m thinking at least four, maybe eight hours, in one spot makes sense,” he said. “Two hours is insane, that’s not enough to make the nut.” He said he’s in favor of issuing reasonably priced license fees for annual permits to operate in Marathon. Even at peak season, he doesn’t think this will mean more than five trucks operating. As for Nenis Mobile Food he says, “I haven’t been yet, but I plan to grab a bite soon. I’m just happy to see them doing their thing.”

IS THE SKY FALLING? NO FED HEADS FOR HURRICANE AGENCIES HAYS BLINCKMANN hays@keysweekly.com
A
lmost two months into the 2017 hurricane season and there is no appointed director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, no head of the National Hurricane Center and only as of late June was Brock Long named head of FEMA, organizations instrumental in the Keys’ hurricane preparedness and recovery. Where does that leave residents of the Keys? Fortunately, the sky isn’t falling. The National Hurricane Center’s acting deputy director, Ed Rappaport, is highly qualified according to Jon Rizzo, warning coordination meteorologist for NOAA/National Weather Service. “Rappaport is no stranger to this (he has been with the NHC for 30 years) and has served as director before,” Rizzo said. “While it’s always good to have one leader for continuity, Rappaport has been acting director before and has the experience. And we do expect an announcement soon on a NOAA head.” Benjamin Friedman is acting director of NOAA. All three federal agencies work closely together because state governments lack the resources and budgets before and after a storm. But disaster response starts at a local level and Rizzo is confident in Keys’ procedures. The Key West Weather Station’s administration is all in place and fully staffed to work 24/7 in the event of an approaching storm. Key West City Manager Jim Scholl also feels confident at the local level of preparedness. “We are fully integrated with the county and the state emergency management organizations,” said Scholl. “Our EM staff is trained, current and participates in all the state and local disaster preparation drills.” Fortunately the 2017 federal budget is in place for emergencies, but looking ahead, President Trump’s proposed 2018 budget would reduce NOAA’s $514 million budget to $400 million and decrease FEMA by $667 million. It would take Congress to approve such budget cuts, but if enacted they could affect our defenses against mother nature.
For the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30, forecasters predict a 45 percent chance of an above-normal season, a 35 percent chance of a nearnormal season, and only a 20 percent chance of a belownormal season. The result could be 5-9 Atlantic hurricanes. — National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, May 25

MINI – SEASON SPECIALS “We have a long history of improvements but predicting the intensity of a hurricane is a tough nut to crack; it’s still going to take many more years of research,” said Rizzo, who is relying on Congress to take a close look at the reality of those budget cuts. “Public safety remains the number one priority,” said Scholl. “Have a plan at home. Have a plan at work. Have a plan to stay when appropriate and have a plan to evacuate when told to do so by local authorities. We also need our business community and visitors to follow the local directed actions during a storm event. The EM team will communicate county wide. Please pay attention. MARATHON
MARATHON WEEKLY / JULY 21, 2017
ON A NORMAL DAY
I GEORGE GARRETT is the deputy city manager and planning director of Marathon. He recently took part in a ride along with Marathon Fire Rescue.
had the opportunity to ride along with the Marathon Fire Rescue team this past Saturday. There weren’t a large number of call-outs, only three, but nonetheless a day to remember and a day hard to forget. It was a day that made me appreciate all of the days that these guys work for us. For the team, it is normally a 24-hour shift. For me, it was only 18. Early in the day, it was a call from a mother concerned for the well-being of her newborn son. Just a new mother being a new mom – learning new skills and being protective of her seven-week-old child. After a quick assessment and a bit of reassurance from our guys, all was well. In the early afternoon, it was a potential suicide which turned out to be painkillers for a broken leg and a little too much imbibing. Not a good combination. Off to the Emergency Room for patient rest and recuperation and we were off, back to Station 14 at the center of the city. In between it all, the team worked about the station keeping things in order. It is a facility to be proud of, having recently won highest honors in a state audit.
Dinnertime came around 6 p.m. and the standing acknowledgement is that calls always come during meals. As predicted, we were called to a drowning in Key Colony Beach, a 3-year-old child. Under the circumstance, movement was instantaneous. All were on the run to the city’s rescue vehicles. What came in the next three and a half hours were a series of intense, focused and expert actions on the part of our rescue professionals to save a very young life – taking over from sheriff’s officers on the scene to make an assessment, patient stabilization, reassurance of distraught parents, a trip to the Trauma Star helicopter, a “code” (loss of vital signs), an attempt at patient stabilization once again, and a trip to the ER as Trauma Star was no longer an option. Once in the ER came a nearly two-hour battle to save this child’s life, re-establishment of vital signs, another “code,” and finally, resignation. Marathon Fire Rescue staff worked side by side with ER nurses and staff and the attending ER physician. They would all argue that the child in this case fought as hard as they did for the most positive of outcomes, ultimately to no avail.
As I was present, I watched eyes. I saw intensity and unwavering focus among attending emergency professionals, paramedics, nursing staff and doctors. The parents were present, where I saw hope, tears, anguish and personal anger. When the call was made and activity ceased, I saw an amazing doctor with a profoundly difficult decision to make which was unambiguously and only hers to make. Came mourning for the parents, clean up for staff, and ultimately a return to Station 14 for us. On the way back, the Marathon Fire Rescue team was physically and emotionally spent. Several had never been involved in the loss of a young child. All are young enough to appreciate the loss for themselves. At the station, the rescue vehicles became organized and orderly again. The team then took an hour to reflect and share emotions. This was not a “debrief,” rather a catharsis intended to ensure that these guys handled, as best possible, this very difficult event. Came next, a pounding on the break room outer door … the parents. We weren’t initially sure of the intention, but they were there to thank our
230BR
219FS
team for their outstanding efforts. The parents sat with us for a while and just talked. Our guys did the same. The parents couldn’t go back to their vacation house. (They literally had only been there for 20 minutes.) Ultimately, we convinced them to stay at the station. There was more talk and consolation during the remainder of the morning. This week, the team gathered again to share thoughts and emotions. The group included our fire rescue team, the Trauma Star medical staff, a trauma star pilot, the ER physician present Saturday evening, and Monroe County’s Fire Rescue chaplain. I offer my story to highlight the absolute professionalism of our city fire and paramedic personnel and that of the staff who participated at Fisherman’s Community Hospital ER (now Baptist). On a day when there were only three call-outs, more than six hours of it were spent on one physically and emotionally draining event. I offer these words in greatest appreciation for a job outstandingly done in the face of the worst of odds.

WITH A PURPOSE Event aims for safer communities Entertainment, refreshments and a chance to meet your neighbors – all with a focus on safety – are coming to the Keys next month. The Monroe County sheriff’s office will sponsor events throughout the Keys for the National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 1. “We get the opportunity to meet the people we serve in a less formal, more fun setting,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “I hope everyone will take this opportunity to meet their neighbors, learn about crime prevention and meet the deputies who are out patrolling our community and keeping it safe,” he said. The goal of the national event is to bring communities together on issues of public safety. In addition to refreshments and entertainment, there will be crime-prevention information available as well as information from related agencies. ALL EVENTS ARE FREE. THE SCHEDULE IS AS FOLLOWS: • Key Largo Community Park, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with Capt. Don Fanelli and Lt. Al Ramirez. Members of the sheriff’s office will be on hand, along with others from Florida Highway Patrol, Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Key Largo and Tavernier Fire and EMS. O
n July 10, seven men were arrested for taking 320 spiny lobster — of which 226 were undersized — before the start of season in the Middle Keys. It is perhaps one of the most egregious cases of resource theft the Keys have ever experienced. “Unfortunately, these individuals chose to take advantage of our valuable saltwater resources that we are so proud of in the Keys,” said Major Alfredo Escanio, Fish and Wildlife Commission Regional Commander for the area. “They are also stealing from lawabiding residents and visitors who are looking forward to taking lobster during the two-day sport season.” Sport season begins at 12:01 a.m. on July 26 to midnight on July 27. Just a week before, a Pembroke Pines man was found with 15 undersized lobster, again out of season. On June 27, two Homestead men were found with 17 undersized lobster, still out of season. This is, of course, only a very partial count of the people caught in Monroe County, charged with violating the laws governing lobster catch. What happens to these people? In Monroe County the State’s Attorney office is going to throw the book at the offenders. That first case, involving the seven men with hundreds of lobsters? Those men have all been charged with two third-degree felonies apiece, 586 first-degree misdemeanors for the outof-season wrung tails, and 14 seconddegree misdemeanors. State Attorney Dennis Ward and his staff of attorneys pursue these cases vigorously. Perhaps the only exception to the rule is if violators are found in posses-
What happens to the confiscated lobster? If it is found in the possession of a commercial fisherman who has followed proper handling, it is sold to a fish house and the money is held in escrow pending the outcome of the trial. If it’s been in the hands of amateur lobsters, who most likely don’t handle the seafood properly by keeping it sanitary and chilled, it is disposed of back into the wild. sion of fewer than four extra, or out of season or wrung tails. Those persons may be offered pre-trial intervention provided they have no criminal background. Anything more than that, and violators will face second-degree misdemeanors that carry a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. That could also mean court costs, fines, community service, writing out the regulation longhand, and classes taught by FWC. Violators caught with more than 25 out of season lobster, or wrung tails, can be charged with a first degree misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Frequent offenders with this many illegal lobster could have the charges upped to a third degree felony with mandatory jail time and penalties. Those seven guys? If convicted they face a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $5,000 fine and mandatory civil penalties. So … are a couple extra lobster really worth it?

ABOUT THESE GRAPHICS:
Pictured are preliminary options for developing Marathon High School’s athletic fields and adding parking spaces. Common to all the plans are new restrooms and a new press box. Also, the areas marked storm water retention are rough guesses on size needed to address drainage and construction costs are ballpark figures. In every option, the 150 new parking spots are added to the top of the property, closest to Sombrero Beach Boulevard. BSSW & ROWE ARCHITECTS/ Contributed
$3.7 million Maintains the current baseball, soccer and football field configuration. Softball field and new practice field would be raised, and a four-lane, 341-meter practice track would be added. Marathon Manor’s footprint is preserved. $4.5 million Consolidates the baseball and practice fields, keeps the original placement of the softball field and extends it to include the football and soccer field. The football, soccer and softball fields would be surrounded by a four-lane, 367 practice track. This option partially covers the footprint where Marathon Manor structure now stands. $5 million Puts the baseball, softball and two practice fields — all separate with no overlap — directly behind the school. The football and soccer fields would take up the entire Marathon Manor property and completely cover the footprint where the structure is now.

FIELD PLAN SCHOOL BOARD UNVEILS INITIAL PLAN FOR MHS ATHLETIC FIELDS SARA MATTHIS
O
sara@keysweekly.com
n Tuesday, the Monroe County School Board tacked on a first review of plans to develop Marathon High School athletic fields at the first public meeting of the annual budget. School officials assured the very small audience that the plans would be heard again. Board member John Dick was not present, and board member Mindy Conn participated in the meeting via telephone. “We need some type of organized discussion between the community at large, the high school community and the school board,” said Board member Andy Griffiths. “Everyone is going to need to be involved in these discussions.” The issue is time. School Board Operations and Planning Director Pat Lefere wants to take advantage of the construction fill generated by the Plantation Key School construction project to raise the fields at Marathon High School. Both are slated to be in full swing by the summer of 2018. “It will be a lengthy and challenging conversations about competing priorities,” said Superintendent Mark Porter. The main priorities at Marathon High School are adding parking (plans call for an extra 151 spaces over the 116 it already has) and raising the level of the athletic fields and student parking lot on the north side of campus that flood after rain. All of the plans call for the extra parking spaces, plus a new press box and concession stand. All three of the plans use part of, or all, of the former Marathon Manor property adjacent to the high school that is owned by the School Board. The building has been vacant for about a dozen years and has fallen into disrepair. Last month, Marathon High School Principal Wendy McPherson told the Weekly the school needed at least 50 more parking spots. “This year we had 15 students who parked on the dirt lot (on Marathon Manor property) and another 10 on a waiting list,” she said, adding that several others parked without permission in the other school parking lot or across the street at friends’ houses. Not every student is eligible for a parking space due to class rank or standing. The other parking spots would be for teachers and visitors. On Tuesday, Lefere said more spaces are needed for special events. “When we started two years ago, drainage was the initial issue. But
Principal McPherson raised the lack of parking, especially for special events,” Lefere said. The third priority for MHS school officials was extra practice fields. Existing fields are under pressure to sometimes serve two sports in a season, plus provide space for physical education classes. Griffiths also asked questions about the areas marked for storm water retention in the initial plan. Lefere said they were rough guesses and something more exact couldn’t be determined without the help of a civil engineer.

“Maybe we could use some type of deep injection well type of technology. It seems like an awful lot of room dedicated to water retention.” — School Board Member Andy Griffiths
“Maybe we could use some type of deep injection well type of technology,” he said. “It seems like an awful lot of room dedicated to water retention.” Lefere said the dollar amounts next to each plan are only estimates until a better plan comes together. Marathon City Councilmen Mark Semnartin and Steve Cook were present at the meeting. Both encouraged the school board to keep an open mind, and referenced the letter penned earlier this week by Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey and signed by the council. The letter asks only for the school board to put aside a part of the Marathon Manor lot that could possibly be developed into a community pool by the city. A previous letter asked the school board to build a pool. Marathon Deputy City Manager George Garrett said the school board also needs to consider developing the building rights associated with the Marathon Manor parcel it owns, possibly as affordable housing. “The school district has about 50 units in Marathon Manor that we need to work very seriously and quickly to move somewhere, so they are not just sitting there. It’s a huge resource, and an important consideration regarding the issues that we have facing us.” Lefere told the board it has hired Vernis & Bowling to determine what can be done with the building rights.

his past growing season, Tom Bordovsky and Donna Naylor grew enough tomatoes in their backyard hydroponic garden to feed their whole street. With seven different varieties of plants towering over their heads in 27 repurposed kitty litter buckets, every three days they were bringing in more tomatoes than they could ever eat on their own. Bordovsky and Naylor retired to Big Pine Key a few years ago after owning a successful garden shop in Fort Lauderdale. “We used to water garden, but we wanted to try true hydroponics when I came across Aaron’s shop,” said Bordovsky. “I think I was his second customer.” Aaron Patterson opened Keys Organic and Hydroponic Supply three years ago, looking for healthier options to change his eating habits. “The one thing I can control is what I put into my body,” he said. He stocks everything needed to start and maintain organic and hydroponic gardens, with more than 100 Keys residents using his systems. Keys Organic and Hydroponic Supply carries a full line of indoor and outdoor gardening supplies for year-round gardening. Two areas in his shop are dedicated to showcasing the water systems. In the front room, a pond is set up with plants and fish with the cycle: feed fish, fish waste is eaten by microbes, microbe waste feeds the plants, plants clean the water – water that Patterson hasn’t had to change in three years – and then the cycle starts over. In the back room, the hydroponic system is in full glory. “I never have to do anything in here but harvest the vegetables,” he said. The entire drip to drain system and lighting runs on timers. Small systems start around $200 and costs after that are low. “It’s perfect world gardening, and it’s particularly important during water shortages.” The nutrient to film technique, which is especially good for seedlings, veggies and herbs, starts around $35 to begin. Bordovsky and Naylor use this system for their lettuce crop, while they look forward to next season’s tomatoes, which they start from heirloom seeds. “We had the best season this year and we are just getting warmed up,” said Bordovsky. “It’s because of the support and great information we received from Aaron.”
Tom Bordovsky grows hydroponically at his home. He yields enough tomatoes in a season to supply his entire street with fresh grown, organic goodies. KRISTEN LIVENGOOD/Keys Weekly
What is hydroponic gardening? It’s a method of growing plants in a water-based, nutrient-rich solution. Soil is not used; instead the root system is supported by perlite, clay pellets or other bases. To learn the basics of hydroponic gardening in the Keys, visit Keys Organic and Hydroponic Supply at 85 Industrial Rd. on Big Pine Key or by calling owner Aaron Patterson at 305-872-7277 or by visiting keyshydro.com.

T
he documentary “Chasing Coral,” chronicling the unprecedented rate of decline in coral in the world’s oceans, premiered in the Florida Keys on July 14. This award-winning film was presented by Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, Mote Marine Laboratory, REEF and Coral Reef Foundation. “Chasing Coral” highlights underwater footage shot worldwide, including in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Over the course of three years, divers, scientists and
photographers compiled more than 650 hours of video illustrating how coral reefs are the nursery for all life in the oceans. The film, distributed by Netflix, debuted this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it took the People’s Choice award for the best documentary. The film’s chief scientific adviser, Mark Eakin, directs the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coral Reef Watch, a program monitoring the impact of climate change, coral bleaching and ocean acidification.

BRIEFLY Toll booth won’t close until Sept. 1
Free financial class held July 25
The closing date for Monroe County’s Card Sound Bridge toll booth is being delayed to Sept. 1, 2017. This change will allow Florida Power & Light time to relocate its power lines on the right of way prior to the start of construction of the all electronic tolling system. The original last day for hand-collected tolls was Aug. 1, 2017. Signs will be posted to alert drivers of the change. Tolls will be collected and discount tickets will continue to be accepted until Sept. 1. After the toll booth closes, unused tickets may be returned for a refund. During construction, which is scheduled to last 189 days, there will be no tolls. Some lane closures will take place. Those closures will be publicized when the schedule is known.
United Way of the Florida Keys is offering a free financial literacy class intended to help improve budgeting and money management skills on Tuesday, July 25 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Power Squadron Building, 5211 Loggerhead Lane in Marathon. Materials will be provided as well as information on how to identify ways to increase income, decrease spending, track spending habits, prepare a personal spending plan/budget, list and prioritize financial goals, identify budgeting tools that help manage bills, and create a personal workable and realistic plan for specific circumstances. For more information and free registration, contact Loretta Geotis at vita@keysunitedway.org or call 305-797-1704.

hile vacationing in Marathon six years ago, Devin Johnson ran into a buddy from college. “He was living here and working here, and said I should try it out,” said Johnson. “It’s the best decision I have ever made.” He’s been slinging drinks back at Faro Blanco’s Lighthouse Grill for the past month and said he loves the atmosphere, lighthouse and bay view, and the phenomenal people who come and visit him at the bar. But, the real winner is his co-workers. “I get to work with Cheddar, Mike, and Red, and that makes my job great,” he said. Johnson really likes the specialty mojitos featured at Lighthouse Grill. “All of our craft cocktails are made with fresh and house-made ingredients,” he said. “The mojitos use fresh muddled mint and lime, and we make our own mint simple syrup.” On the menu, he suggests the Shrimp Veracruz, or the killer steaks, like the tenderloin, prime rib, or dry aged New York sirloin; for apps, the tuna tartar or calamari. When he isn’t working, he’s on the water, or relaxing and enjoying all the islands have to offer with his friends. “Every day I am off work, I am living someone else’s vacation,” he said. MARATHON WEEKLY / JULY 21, 2017
THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING Making things better requires more than just complaining.
T
here’s a joke, somewhat adapted for the area, that seems to fit these days… Q: How many Conchs (or Conch wannabes) does it take to change a light bulb? A: Three. One to change the bulb, one to mix the margaritas, and one to complain that the new light bulb just isn’t the same as the old one. That joke goes hand in hand with this theory I have about people and the Keys — if they could, most people would turn the clocks and calendars back to the day and time that they first got here. Everything was better then, it was more quaint/outlaw/ Keysy, there were fewer chain stores/ tourists/developers, there were more 24-hour bars/square groupers/affordable homes. Let’s not forget that we were all younger then, too. No need to argue — it was just so much better in those days gone by. Or was it? Just as the passage of time makes the past seem better than it probably was, not all of the changes have been bad (Sombrero Beach, Marathon Community Park, Boot Key Harbor, local wastewater treatment). And most certainly, not everything that has stayed the same is good. Perhaps it’s time that we stop all this complaining about how things were better back then and try to work together to make things better now and for the future. Cry all you want about the old days, but they’re not coming back. It’s a new day, time for new approaches to our issues (especially affordable housing and insurance costs), time to let the past pass. Growth restrictions, economic downturns, circumstances, and speculations gone wrong have left Marathon with some very obvious blighted properties. Any of us around who still remember Hanley’s/Rip’s/Sakura/Pelican’s/Gators can only stare in sorrow at the ruins of what once was. That goes the same for the Longhorn Lodge property. The Crystal Bay Resort. And many other properties that have seen better days. At least many of the buildings that were rotting in place have been removed. Anyone who remembers the old Buccaneer Lodge, and believes that decaying property was better and more aesthetically pleasing
than the current Tranquility Bay Resort, has his head stuck somewhere it shouldn’t be. We live in a beautiful tropical island paradise, surrounded by a JOHN wondrous marine BARTUS ecosystem. Why is it wrong to want to is a City Council make things better, member and a improve our aging former Mayor of resorts, preserve the City of Marathon. John is also and protect our a musician who nearshore waters, performs around make our streets town at various look nice—actually establishments. make it a beautiful tropical island paradise? People complain incessantly. About everything. Including false accusations and statements based on gross ignorance of actual facts. A prime example is a shared story about the closing of Knight’s Key Campground and its redevelopment. People post absolute lies and fabrications. Like this: “All the politicians in the Keys are getting their pockets lined.” Or this: “Is the city handing new construction permits to the Very Rich again???” FYI — the permits attached to Knight’s Key came with the land. The state considers (in their questionable wisdom) each campsite equivalent to one transient unit. I can relate to the people who feel that Marathon is losing another connection to its past with the closing of the campground. But when there is a willing seller (with vested development rights) and a willing buyer (who wishes to take advantage of them), there’s not a lot a city can do. And don’t tell me the city should have bought it (or any of the other properties mentioned) when so many locals don’t think we should spend dime one on a community pool. Any time I go to Sombrero Beach, our City Hall and parks, the new Hyatt Place Faro Blanco or Courtyard Marathon or Holiday Inn Express, I don’t mourn the passing of something old (with the possible exception of Kelsey’s Restaurant and Krista’s peanut butter pie). I see a bright future still ahead. Let’s start looking toward that future instead of mourning a past that will never come again. Let’s all just take a look around, see how things can be made better, and make our island home the best it can be. ••••• John Bartus performs Wednesday at Tarpon Creek at the Holiday Inn Express, Thursday at Sparky’s Landing, Saturday and Sunday afternoons at Lorelei, Saturday night at the Key Colony Inn, and Friday, Sunday and Monday evenings at the Lighthouse Grill at Faro Blanco. www.johnbartus.com
