Herman Andaya, Arakawa’s Chief of Staff, is serving as Regan’s campaign manager. Regan is the latest in a series of Arakawa aides who’ve run for the Maui County Council. In 2014, aides Mike Molina and Joe Pontanilla (both former Councilmembers) lost their races against current Councilmembers Mike White and Don Guzman, respectively. But in 2010, former Arakawa aide Don Couch did succeed in ousting embattled South Maui Councilmember Wayne Nishiki.

KAHO‘OLAWE CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN NOT GOING WELL

Would you vote for this man?

KEITH REGAN RUNNING FOR OFFICE

• In January 2013 he got some press for removing a time capsule from the old Wailuku Post Office during its nowcontroversial demolition; • In the spring of 2014, he signed the law banning smoking on county beaches because Arakawa was in South Korea; • He walked back Arakawa’s January 2015 comment that a monorail was “being quietly considered for the county,” saying later in The Maui News that “The mayor means that we need to look into the future” and that “This isn’t an active county project by any means;” • In February 2015, he called together everyone who had ever made The Maui News’ annual “People Who Made a Difference” list (which he did in 2011) for a “brainstorming session” one afternoon in the Mayor’s Lounge; • Stood in for Arakawa in late March 2015 when the County Committee on the Status of Women presented its annual “Women of Excellence Awards;” • Appeared with Arakawa on May 21 of this year for the ground-breaking of Hospice Maui’s new facility in Kahului. • Took a delegation of county officials

MAUI POLICE FOLLIES Whoa, the Maui Police Department had to endure of what we in the journalism profession refer to as a really crappy week. Last week, two of their own have been or are in the process of being busted for some pretty serious crimes. Let’s start with the MPD employee who’s been charged with driving under the influence. Her name is Rachel Garvin. Her brothers in blue arrested her shortly after 11pm on May 31 for “Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant and Refusal to Submit to Breath, Blood, or Urine Test,” according to a news release the MPD sent out the next day. Garvin has been with the department for eight years, according to the news release, and works at the Receiving Desk. She’s surrendered her badge and gun, the news release states, and was released after posting $1,100 bail. For any department, that would be bad enough. But then on June 3, the department sent out a new press release, this stating that “an

It should surprise no one that County of Maui Managing Director Keith Regan is running for office. On Friday, June 5, Regan’s wife Lynn Araki-Regan sent out a press release stating that next year her husband would run for the Wailuku County Council seat. That seat’s currently held by Mike Victorino, but term limits bar him from running again in 2016 (which, just to be clear, is nearly a year and a half away). “Serving the people of Maui County has always been a passion of mine,” Regan said in the news release. “I enjoy working with the public, dealing with a broad range of complex issues, and developing solutions that are both sensible and achievable. My experience as a public administrator has provided me with skills that I believe will be complimentary and beneficial to the legislative process.” Regan’s spent more than seven years as Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa’s Managing Director. His campaign bio highlights all the big names–national and local–that you’d expect from someone who wants public office: master’s degree in public administration from USC; president of the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui; board member of the Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation, American Heart Association of Maui, Haleakala Waldorf, Maui Young Business Roundtable and the Tri-Isle Resource Conservation and Development Council. He’s a Cub Scout leader and has in the past held office with the Kiwanis Club of Kahului. Now the job of county Managing Director is a curious one. Less than a Chief Executive Officer who reports directly to the County Council, but more than a mere vice mayor, Regan “supervises and evaluates the management and performance of all line executive departments and agencies,” according to the official county website. The Managing Director also helps the mayor in “supervising and coordinating” the annual county operating budget and capital improvement budget. Of course, none of that instantly translates

into popular election success. But in the past few years especially, Regan’s face has popped up in the media in a number of instances that don’t really have anything to do with supervising agencies or the county’s budget:

With just a few days left in their 30-day online crowdfunding drive, the Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) has raised less than one-third of third of the $100,000 they need to show the State of Hawaii that people care about the restoration of the island, their latest GoFundMe results show. At press time, the campaign has raised just $33,857 from 322 people. Acknowledging this, the KIRC public information office sent out an email today that includes a passionate plea for funds from an unnamed “friend of the KIRC.” It’s a compelling statement, explaining why the KIRC needs to go directly to the people of Hawaii for money to use to help restore Kaho‘olawe, which was devastated by decades of bombardment from its post-war use as a U.S. Navy target range: “The Legislature, upon whom the Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) must now depend for funding, munificently appropriated less than one-third of the requested $6 million for the biennium budget, beginning July 1, 2015,” the unnamed “friend” wrote. “On June 30th, half of the KIRC staff will be laid off. These people don’t have cushy state jobs; they believe in the KIRC vision and mission; they live and breath Kaho‘olawe. Unless you have been on island with them, worked at their side, listened to their stories, and shared their food, you may not understand their passion, dedication to, and aloha for Kaho‘olawe.” For more information on the KIRC’s

employee of the Maui Police Department” was suspected of “exposing his genitals and masturbating in a vehicle in the Pukalani Terrace parking lot and the parking lot for the Hannibal Tavares Community Center” during the early morning hours of May 30.The news release states that that officer is on “personal leave” and that the case “is under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division.” “Callers described the male to be in his 40s to 50s, approximately 200 lbs., driving a green colored Toyota 4Runner,” states the June 3 MPD news release. “Investigators are pursuing a possible lead provided by at least one of the callers. Five separate Sex. Assault IV cases were initiated and the investigation is ongoing.” Earlier on June 3, Hawaii News Now reported that “multiple sources” (all unnamed) had said the Pukalani flasher was, in fact, a Maui police officer. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro

MAUI JOB CORPS DOES LANDSCAPING

The Maui Job Corps recently volunteered to perform a variety of landscaping maintenance tasks at the administration building housing Aloha House, Maui Youth & Family Services (MYFS) and Malama Family Recovery Center and the MYFS campus in Makawao. During the week of May 11, 75 students and 10 staff members, led by Facility Maintenance Supervisor AJ Delima, cleared yards of overgrown shrubs and plants, raked leaves, trimmed hedges and helped haul away large amounts of green waste. Each year, the three nonprofits help more than 5,000 individuals and families affected by behavioral health issues. “We are tremendously grateful to the job corps students and leadership for volunteering to upgrade our outdoor space so it is more welcoming for staff as well as our clients and their families,” said Jud Cunningham, tri-agency Chief Executive Officer. Maui Job Corps, also located in Makawao, is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 through 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. “Participating in community service and understanding the importance of giving are central to our program,” said Maui-site Director Robert Upton. “It is an integral part of our students’ training and learning

how to be well-rounded citizens.” The Maui Job Corps has volunteered for the tri-agency several times in the past. Last year, job corps students completely overhauled Malama Family Recovery Center’s backyard prior to the installation of fun and stimulating playground equipment for clients’ children. -Suzanne Kayian

MAKAWAO HISTORY MUSEUM WINS TWO AWARDS The little Makawao History Museum has recently been honored with two pretty substantial awards. On May 29, at the Historic Hawaii Foundation’s 2015 Preservation Honor awards ceremony on Oahu, the museum walked out with two awards. First, the museum itself won the Preservation Commendation Award. This award goes to an individual, organization or agency that takes some action in support of some manner of historical preservation. Secondly, the Discover Historic Makawao Walking Tour brochure (written by Gail Ainsworth, who is also the museum’s director, and designed by Patt Narrowe) took away the Interpretive Media Award, which is for a publication or visual presentation that interprets a particular historic property. “It is hard to describe to you the excitement, inspiration, pleasure and significance that this experience garnered for the museum,” said Ainsworth in a June 2 news

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is seeking to fill seven alternate and one primary seat on its advisory council. The sanctuary is accepting applications for the following seats: commercial shipping (primary), commercial shipping (alternate), Hawaii County (alternate), Lanai Island (alternate), citizen-at-large (alternate), education (alternate), tourism (alternate), and whale watching (alternate). The advisory council ensures public participation in sanctuary matters and provides advice to sanctuary management. “The members of our advisory council represent an extremely important element of our community,” said Malia Chow, sanctuary superintendent. “Their input, experience and expertise assist sanctuary managers in making informed and timely decisions on how best to protect and conserve our important cultural and natural resources.” Candidates are selected based on their expertise and experience in relation to the seat for which they are applying; they are also selected based on community and professional affiliations, and views regarding the protection and management of marine resources. Applicants who are chosen as members or alternates should expect to serve a two-year term. Applications are due June 30. To receive an application kit or for further information, please contact council coordinator Shannon Lyday via email at Shannon. Lyday@noaa.gov; by phone at 808-7255905; or visit the sanctuary website at Hawaiihumpbackwhale.noaa.govl. Completed applications should be submitted to: Inouye Regional Center, ATTN: NOS/ HIHWNMS/Shannon Lyday, 1845 Wasp Blvd., Building 176, Honolulu, HI 96818. The sanctuary is administered by a partnership of NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and the State of Hawaii through the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The sanctuary works to protect humpback whales through research, education, conservation and stewardship. -Suzanne Kayian

HALEAKALA BOOK ALSO WINS AWARD If you’ve ever hiked across the miles of acres spanning the rocky Martian ground of Haleakala Crater or gazed upon Haleakala Ranch’s extensive pastures as paniolos go about their work and wondered how this all came to be, local author John Harrisson wrote a book for that. Harrisson’s Haleakala Ranch: Celebrating the 125th Anniversary

provides such an in-depth look into the Haleakala Ranch’s history that it won the Interpretive Media Award at Historic Hawaii Foundation’s 2015 Preservation Honor Awards Ceremony in Honolulu on June 7. “We are honored by this award,” said Haleakala Ranch Company president Don Young in a June 7 Haleakala Ranch news release. “It is a privilege to be able to record the memories and stories of the Baldwin family and so many old-timers whose labor and dedication grew Haleakala Ranch and the larger Maui community in tandem over the past century.” Harrisson underwent seven years of intensive research collecting anecdotes and backgrounds about the Upcountry Maui’s renowned ranch, which culminated in a book that goes way beyond a textbook timeline of historical events. The bound 125-years worth of stories about Haleakala Ranch merits the “media” part in its award title for its pictures of families and employees, enabling readers to empathize with all of the Ranch’s past generations. The visual component of Har-

rison’s book also helps readers see past their Western perceptions of Texan cowboys roaming tumbleweed towns on horseback. His rich illustrations and photographs show readers that these old Upcountry generations were much like community members today who worked with fellow families to bring forth progressive developments on the island of Maui, as detailed in the author’s page on the Hawai‘i Book and Music Festival’s website. John Harrisson’s efforts to combine both narrative and visual elements using a personal tone has created a beautiful project that conveys the traditional spirit of aloha in its century-spanning biography of the Haleakala Ranch. Haleakala Ranch: Celebrating the 125th Anniversary is available in Maui County’s public libraries as well as in all public and private high schools on the island. -Jade Boren ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

News Of The Weird MEALS 2.0 Silicon Valley code-writers and engineers work long hours–with apparently little time for “food” as we know it. Eating is “time wasted,” in the words of celebrity inventor Elon Musk, and normal meals a “marketing facade,” said another valley bigwig. The New York Times reported in May that techies are eagerly scarfing down generic (but nutrient-laden) liquids like Schmilk and People Chow, largely for ease of preparation, to speed their return to work. The Times food editor described one product as “oat flour” washed down with “the worst glass of milk ever.” “Pancake batter,” according to a Times reporter. (That supermarket staple Ensure? According to the food editor, it’s “fine wine” compared to Schmilk.)

DISTRACTED AMERICANS Air travelers last year left $675,000 in (obviously) spare change in airport screening bins, reported the Transportation Security Administration in April. Of the cars reported stolen in 2014, 44,828 were with keys left inside them, according to an April National Insurance Crime Bureau release. American credit card holders fail to claim “about $4 billion” in earned “rewards” each year, according to CardHub.com’s 2015 Credit Card Rewards Report.

OUR LEAST HARDY GENERATION In March, following the departure of Zayn Malik from the British band One Direction, an executive with the Peninsula employment law firm in Manchester told London’s Daily Telegraph that he had received “hundreds” of calls from employers seeking advice about workers who were requesting “compassionate” leave because Malik’s resignation had left them distraught. Also, a spokeswoman for the charity Young Minds told the Telegraph she was concerned about Malik fans self-harming.

BRIGHT IDEAS Among recent inventions not expected to draw venture capital interest (reported by Popular Science in June): (1) A Canadian software engineer’s machine that unspools toilet paper exactly three squares at a time (but please keep fingers away from the cleaver!). (2) A Japanese shoulder-mounted tomato-feeder that provides nourishment to marathoners without their needing to catch tomatoes provided by supporters. (3) Google software engineer Maurice Bos’ whiteboard-mounted clock that writes down the exact time, with a marker, at five-minute intervals (after erasing the previous time).

Britain’s Home Office, judging requests for asylum by immigrants threatened with deportation but who fear oppressive treatment if returned to their home countries, recently turned down asylum for Nigerian lesbian activist Aderonke Apata, 47, apparently because the office doubted her orientation. Though

Apata had submitted testimonials (and even photographs) “proving” her homosexuality, the Home Office was skeptical because she had children from a previous heterosexual relationship. On the other hand, an immigration court in England ruled in April that a Libyan man, identified only as “HU,” could not be deported since he is a career criminal and a chronic drunk who would be so unlikely to reform his drinking that he would surely face a lifetime of prison in Libya.

CONTINUING CRISIS Suspended Catholic Monsignor Kevin Wallin, 63, was sentenced in May to more than five years in prison for running a meth distribution ring from Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he also operated a sex shop to launder the drug profits. (Though he faced a 10-year sentence, he had a history of charity work and submitted more than 80 letters of support from high-ranking clergy.)

PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US Walter Merrick, 66, was charged with aggravated assault in the New Orleans suburb of Harvey, Louisiana, in March after an altercation with neighbor Clarence Sturdivant, 64, over the comparative merits of Busch and Budweiser beers. Bud-man Sturdivant fired the only shot, but a sheriff’s deputy said Merrick was the aggressor–since he had offered Sturdivant only a Busch. (In Tulsa, Oklahoma, in April, police found two bloodsplattered men in an apartment parking lot at 1am, the result of a dual stabbing spree with broken beer bottles–over whether Android phones are superior to iPhones.)

POINTLESS Holly Solomon, 31, pleaded guilty in April to aggravated assault with her Jeep–against her then-husband–and has been sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison. The crime occurred in a suburb of Phoenix in November 2012, days after President Obama’s re-election, as Solomon ran down her spouse because she was angry that he had neglected to vote for Mitt Romney as expected. However, his no-show did not affect the outcome, as Romney easily won the state’s 11 electoral votes without him.

WHAT A COUNTRY! Faced with a government fee accepted by most real estate investors who view it as a routine cost of doing business, wealthy Arizona investor Wayne Howard balked. Instead of the ordinary filing-fee rate of $50 for registering a property deed, he demanded that all 2,922 of his deeds be recorded for $500, and when the Pinal County treasurer turned him down, he told the official he would simply use his pull in the legislature to change the law and get his 99.6 percent discount that way. He almost succeeded. The bill passed the state Senate and was favored in the House, but after the Arizona Republic exposed Howard’s imperial move, it failed, 30-28. ■

o the person who stole my slippers from Baby Beach the other week. You must have really needed them since they were two years old and falling apart. I left them in the sand with everyone else’s. And though it may have appeared that everyone had already left the beach, my car was still parked in the lot and I was walking the beach to watch the sunset. Of course, you’d never know the sentimental value they had since I was wearing them during my wedding on the beach two years ago. Back in the day, if you left something at the beach you could come back the next day and it’d still be there. Maui has changed. ■

THE ISLAND

IS A CANOE

MAUI’S FIRST VOYAGING CANOE IN 600 YEARS NEEDS A HOME STORY BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO • PHOTOS BY SEAN M HOWER

ome. A place to clean up, rejuvenate, rest. Above all, rest. We all need one, and the new voyaging canoe Mo‘okiha O Pi‘ilani is no different. The canoe needs a home, their crew says. And it needs it now. “Mostly, I’m looking for a safe berthing place for this canoe where kids can get out of the bus and walk over and step onto it,” Tim Gilliom, the canoe’s captain, told me recently. “They have to be able to step onto it. Kupuna too. The governor can’t even help me–nothing’s available. Oh, we don’t have access to fresh water, either.” Kala Babayan, the Mo‘okiha’s naviga-

tor, agreed. “This canoe belongs to the community of Maui. It has to be accessible to children and kupuna,” she said. “A mooring is not accessible. There’s only one voyaging canoe in Maui County. It also enhances the visitor experience–the culture is why many people come here.” The name means “Sacred Lizard of Maui.” When I visited the voyaging canoe Mo‘okiha O Pi‘ilani on May 28, it was perched up on blocks at the Mala Boat Ramp in Lahaina. Her paint was fresh and white rigging taught. The plan was that sometime in the next seven days, Gilliom told me, he and his crew would move the

big rocks that currently sit in front of it, get the canoe onto a trailer and then carefully–CAREFULLY–maneuver it into the water bow-first. “I have seven days to get it in the water or miss the tides,” Gilliom had said on May 28. “We’re trying to go to Kauai by June 21 for their canoe launching. They’ve been struggling like us. We’re always looking for water people, boat people, sailors. We’re starting intense crew training in the middle of summer.” Once in the water, the crew could begin to put the Mo‘okiha through sea trials. But the goal wasn’t just to get to Kauai by the

end of June and link up with the Namahoe (The Twins), that island’s voyaging canoe. Assuming all goes well, the Mo‘okiha would voyage to Tahiti in 2017 to escort the Hokulea–Hawaii’s most famous voyaging canoe–on its way home. “Kauai has its own canoe, even bigger than this one,” Babayan told me. “They’re getting ready to launch her. We’re a voyaging family–an ohana of canoes. Each island supports each other. Our goal is to be there when she’s getting ready to be birthed. It was the same thing here in July when this canoe was birthed. And when we go out of Hawaii to Tahiti, New Zealand, we have ohana there, too. People who give us housing, a place to stay. They’re like cousins you didn’t see for a long time.” For Babayan, the emphasis on ohana both resonates with her and exemplifies the best of voyaging, and Hawaii. “In a family you care for each other, practice kindness,” she said. “These are Hawaiian values, Polynesian values. It’s very easy to lose sight of these values as we progress at light years.” But that’s all in the future. On my visit, a few crew members that will eventually take the Mo‘okiha to Kauai and, eventually, across the Pacific were busy prepping the canoe–nearly 20 years in the making– ready for sea trials. Even just standing next to the massive, 62-foot, 11.5 ton canoe, I could smell fresh varnish aboard. The canoe’s red and white paint glistened in the sunlight, practically begging for a hand to touch it. The Mo‘okiha is the first voyaging canoe birthed on Maui in centuries, and getting it ready for the sea was a mammoth undertaking. The people who became known as Polynesians took to the sea in large voyaging canoes three thousand years ago. Over the next millennia, they discovered Tahiti, the Marquesas and eventually Hawaii, Easter Island and New Zealand. The Mo‘okiha’s design is very similar to the Hokulea, the voyaging canoe designed by Herb Kawainui Kane and Kenneth Emory in the 1970s. And that design wasn’t easy to come by. “Ships are as mortal as their makers,” Kane wrote in his 1998 essay “In Search of the Ancient Polynesian Voyaging Canoe.” “Except for fragments of ancient canoes excavated on New Zealand and pieces of a large canoe recently unearthed from a bog on Huahine, there is no hard evidence. Except for a petroglyph on Easter Island, and passing references in the old legends, there is no descriptive record.” Until the mid-1970s, when the Hokulea began traveling the world, showing everyone how Polynesians could venture across whole oceans with nothing more than sails and celestial navigation, Hawaiian voyaging canoes were quite literally the stuff of legends. And until last July, it had been six centuries since such a canoe came to life on Maui. All that changed on July 11, 2014, when the Mo‘okiha hit the water at Mala Wharf for the first time. The canoe was a product of a great deal of love and labor from the nonprofit organization Hui O Wa‘a Kaulua, which formed in 1975 to perpetuate Hawaii canoe building arts and culture. In 1976, the Hui launched the canoe Mo‘olele– “Leaping Lizard.” Though smaller than the

Mo‘okiha, that canoe has served as a “living classroom”–a way to teach everyone about Polynesian voyaging and wayfinding. Like the Mo‘olele, the Mo‘okiha is also designed to serve as a “living classroom” for students. “There’s everything on this canoe,” Kala Babayan, the Mo‘okiha’s navigator, told me. “Navigation is so much mathematics. There’s a system for calculating speed. The sails–they’re all physics. Distributing weight and how that affects your ability to steer. Finding direction based on the position of stars. We want to use the canoe as a way to bridge science and culture. It teaches kids science and math–they don’t even know they’re learning. We’re breaking down the walls of what you’d consider a traditional classroom.” Of course, there’s still a great deal of work that needs to be done. Like getting the Mo‘okiha a proper berth. “We’ve brought thousands of kids to the canoe,” Babayan said. “They touched her. This is the next step, to get them onboard.” For Babayan, serving on the Mo‘okiha is the culmination of a lifetime of immersion in the world of Polynesian navigation. “My dad is a pwo navigator–it’s an elite society of master navigators,” she said. “I grew up around voyaging. I sailed in my 20s with my dad. He taught me everything I know. In 2007, I was fortunate to go to Japan on the Hokulea. In 2013, I sailed from Kauai to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. It took us 24 hours. And in 2014, I was chosen as an apprentice navigator to go from Hawaii to Tahiti. We set a record for noninstrumental navigation.” But over the past two decades, few have been closer to the Mo‘okiha than Gilliom, who will serve as its captain. His dedication to the canoe borders on the obsessive; indeed, when I arrived at the boat ramp, one crew member pointed at Gilliom, who was then giving a brief tour of the canoe to some visitors, and joked that he was all but married to Mo‘okiha. “I’ve been working 19 years, going on 20,” Gilliom later told me. “Never let up, except to sail on the Hokulea.” Unlike his more famous musician siblings Amy Hanaiali‘i and Eric (the former of which is putting on a June 14 golf tournament to help raise money for the Mo‘okiha– see “E Malama Golf Tournament” below for

more info), Gilliom is a pure sailor. At one point during our brief tour of the canoe, Gilliom described in a perfectly matter-offact tone a recent voyaging canoe trip that could easily have ended in disaster. “One day we were stuck in a 50-knot gale, three days out of Papeete,” he said, then pointed to the Mo‘okiha’s rigging. “These donuts here snapped in half. We’re beefing up things here for when that happens. And it will happen.” Gilliom walked me around the canoe, which despite her length and 22-foot beam, didn’t take too much time. He showed me the bunks, mounted above the canoe’s twin hulls, that will house the 13 or 14 crew members who voyage on the Mo‘okiha. He also showed me the navigator’s chair, which was already crusted with sea water because Gilliom and the crew didn’t have sufficient fresh water to wash the canoe after its July launching. “She tracks real nice, sails real good,” Gilliom said. “She’s a Cadillac. Steers real easy. We’ve got everything we need except for a spot.” About that need for a spot–about a dozen years ago, I sat down with thenLahaina Restoration Foundation executive

me. “We’ve done very little work with the Hawaiian side of Lahaina history.” But according to Babayan and Gilliom, that won’t happen. “No, we can’t use that,” Babayan told me. “It’s a high-traffic area, and there’s too much danger of us getting bumped.”

“WE WANT TO USE THE CANOE AS A WAY TO BRIDGE SCIENCE AND CULTURE. IT TEACHES KIDS SCIENCE AND MATH–THEY DON’T EVEN KNOW THEY’RE LEARNING. WE’RE BREAKING DOWN THE WALLS OF WHAT YOU’D CONSIDER A TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM.” director Keoki Freeland about what would take the place of the old Carthaginian ship, once it was towed away from Lahaina Harbor and sunk off Puamana. Accounts at the time said the voyaging canoe then under construction in Lahaina Town might find a home at the Carthaginian’s old berth. “That’s a definite possibility,” Freeland told

At one point during my brief tour, Gilliom got down on the deck to assist a crew member with some varnish. As he did, he recited an old Hawaiian saying. “He va‘a he moku, he moku he va‘a,” Gilliom said. “‘The canoe is an island, the island a canoe.’ When you’re on a canoe and you run out of water and food, you perish. It’s the same for all canoes. The things you take for granted at home– there’s no ice on board. We only take exactly what we need: safety gear, food, water for drinking and cooking. Showering–we use salt water, and coconut oil keeps you from getting crusty.” If it seems that finding a space for everything and everyone on such a cramped canoe on voyages across vast oceans would be next to impossible, Gilliom betrayed no hesitation. “When you’re a captain, you see how much gear people bring on,” he said. “You really gotta know how to balance it out.” When he was done, Gilliom pointed me to the canoe’s steering blade, mounted near the stern. Carved into the handle was the name “Mau,” after Papa Mau Pialiug, the Micronesian sailor consider the father of modern non-instrument navigation. “He’s gonna steer us in the right direc-

tion,” Gilliom said (the canoe also mounts a small Honda outboard motor, for getting in and out of harbors). I asked Gilliom to show me how the steering blade worked. “It’s up and down, not side to side,” he said. “Lift up, the canoe goes into the wind. Pushing down, you go downwind. If you’re lucky, you tie the blade down, trim the sails, put four to five people amidships and you can hold the line without steering. Mostly though, we use the sidesweeps when we’re going downwind.” Mounted on the stern itself are solar panels. “Those are for our radio box and lights,” Gilliom said. “You have to have lights on in the shipping lanes. These canoes don’t really show up on radar. But the lights can hinder the navigator at night– makes it harder to see the stars.” When I told Gilliom that the canoe’s navigation and propulsion systems were really quite elegant, his eyes lit up. “I’ll tell you, there’s nothing more efficient than these canoes,” he said. “You can manipulate the water jugs for weight. The rigging’s redundant. There really is no metal, other than the hardware. It gives a little bit, everything is tied. But it’s real simple, and it doesn’t wear out very fast, as long as you keep it clean and check the rigging. I wish you could get a car… well, they don’t make a car like that.” For more information on how to help the Mo‘okiha crew and the Hui O Waa Kaulua, go to Huiowaa.org, email info@ huiowaa.org or call 808-667-4050. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

zak. “The road to wellness can be long and winding but it starts with one day, and that one day can change your whole life. Global Wellness Day began in 2012 in Turkey. Belgin Askoy of Richmond Nua Wellness-Spa started the event. It’s a day that centers around awareness and pledging whole body wellness. The idea is to take the pledge on the second Saturday of June and build a healthier lifestyle over the long term with seven key steps: walk for an hour, drink more water, do not use plastic water bottles, eat organic food, do a good deed, make a family meal and be in bed by 10pm. “We all want to be healthy, look good and live a good life, both physically and spiritually,” says Askoy. “Four Seasons shares these values and we are thrilled that they are supporting this worldwide initiative.” For Maui’s Wellness Day, meditation starts at 8am. his Saturday, the Four Seasons Resort is inviting the community to participate in Global Wellness Day. This makes sense, because Four Seasons Senior Spa Director Pat Makozak is passionate about wellness. In fact, some of the best health wisdom I’ve received has been from her. “Drink lemon in warm water to start the day,” she says. “Lemon has the necessary electrolytes the body requires first thing in the morning and also assists in alkalizing the system. Lemon also assists in the detoxification process and makes the liver’s life a lot less stressful.”

THE BIGGEST ISSUE OF THE YEAR IS ALMOST HERE! 18 JUNE 11, 2015

Good Scare ‘Insidious: Chapter 3’ isn’t as good as its predecessors, but it’s still fun staged scares. I love the Insidious movies, ★★★★★ which have little to no on-screen violence Rated PG-13 / 97 Min.

M

y introduction to the Insidious films began at the Mesa Drive-In movie theater.Yes, there are still drive-in movie theaters across America and I was fortunate enough to catch one of the defining horror films of this generation while sitting in my Saturn. I was living in Colorado at the time and attended the opening night premiere of Scream 4, which shared the double feature bill with Insidious. While Scream 4 front-loaded its best scene in the opening credits and fizzled fast, Insidious delivered. James Wan’s 2010 haunted house thriller had me so petrified that I was jumping at all the scary sounds coming out of my car stereo (the days of outdoor drive-in speakers are gone). I locked my doors but kept checking my rear view mirror. The next day, I took my buddy Dave to see it and fiendishly watched him jump out of his seat and yell out expletives in fright. Horror movies can be an ordeal, an endurance test of fighting back nausea but Insidious, like the best fright films, puts the emphasis on suspense, style and creatively

and zero gore but succeed by doing what horror movies are supposed to do: scare you until you walk away a limp noodle. It’s unusual for horror movies to be “fun,” while working its audience over time with jack-inthe-box-like jolts, but that’s what Insidious does. I also loved Insidious: Chapter 2, which dropped the original’s ode to Poltergeist and paid homage to Carnival of Souls. It upped the ante for ghoulish imagery, provided a much stronger villain and demonstrated an uncanny affection for the genre. While Insidious: Chapter 3 isn’t as good as what came before, it’s not bad, either. There’s still creepy atmosphere and genuinely unsettling sequences, but they’re not as strong as the earlier movies. If key collaborators Wan (who only produced this one and puts in a cameo appearance) and Leigh Whannell (the series producer who directed this one and appears in a supporting role) have one more of these up their sleeve, they need to go out with a much bigger bang. In this prequel, Stefanie Scott plays an aspiring young actress who’s bedridden after a car accident. She’s hearing voices in her vent and thinks her deceased mother is trying

Nearly as scary as that new Entourage movie

to contact her. A burned out psychic (series MVP Lin Shaye) knows better and tries to protect the girl from a supernatural monster. It’s fun to see Shaye, a 71-year-old character actress, carry the film. Scott leads the central plot line and Dermot Mulroney is the biggest name in the cast but it’s Shaye’s movie and gives it everything she’s got. These movies are always at their best when characters enter “the further,” a dimly lit, smoky and under populated version of the afterlife. There’s an anything-can-happen excitement in watching these characters

brandish a lantern, fearfully making their way through vast, empty spaces. The silence and Halloween haunted house spookiness of these sequences are punctuated by runins with ghosts who are unfriendly but, in an eerie touch, always smiling. The biggest scare is saved for the very last scene. Unlike the recent, limp Poltergeist remake, which ends with a warm and fuzzy wrap-up better suited for a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, the third Insidious leaves you with one final image to keep you from getting a good night’s sleep. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Your life is a Theater of the Absurd this week. Only when you are at your freakiest will things go smoothly. In fact, if you do this whole trip well enough, things will go better than smoothly; they’ll accelerate, intensify, and multiply in delicious ways. So go jogging in a ball gown this week, wear bunny ears to work, or tap dance while cooking. Flash your lover. Prank call your best friend. Don’t resist your wildest, most whimsical urges. It’ll do you good to go Da Da for the moment, and it’ll be mighty fun (for us as well as you). CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Some people find the raucous rambunctiousness of children noisy and intrusive, but that’s rarely the case amongst your tribe. Usually, the chaotic cacophony of youthful playtime is the perfect background music for your life. I mention it because it’s the element you’ve been missing, but you’ve been too busy to notice. Go sit near a playground this week, or otherwise inject some playful chaos into your everyday existence. You only think you like peace and quiet. In truth, silence is good sometimes, and certainly better than just plain noise, but what you really need is some joyful clamor. You’ll see; once you have some, you’ll be thinking more clearly than you have in months.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

My hustler friend is complaining about being outsourced by cheap boys from Poland and the Czech Republic, driving prices down. Consequently, he’s turning to his artistic talents to make his way in the world, instead of trying to compete with those boys’ bargain basement blow jobs. I think it’s for the best; sex work’s a rough life if you do it for too long. A similar force is driving you from once-lucrative work you’re not crazy about to slightly less fruitful labors that you enjoy immensely. Go with it. Don’t cling to the old dealio long after it’s done. It’s yesterday’s thing. Head toward tomorrow’s and don’t look back.

ANSWERS

...to questions from page 4

1: A–Requires the University of Hawaii to establish the collective goal of becoming net-zero with respect to energy use by 2035. 2: D–$3.7 million 3: B–Upcountry

SHINE BRIGHTLY AT BODY ALIVE YOGA.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

You’re a babe in diapers. You’re not used to being so totally helpless. Your legendary ability to control variables is at an ebb right now, and that could be pretty scary, or exciting, or both. Don’t just lie there and cry, though. You’re more than a blob of baby fat and poo. So you’re not as on top of things as you thought you were. So what? Being out of control means other things can happen, things that are beyond your conception. Letting other people’s imaginations in on the action means you might experience some lameass bullshit, but it also opens the door to amazing stuff that you’d never have dreamt up on your own.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Words are meaningless. What you need right now is action, or at least a picture. Unfortunately, all I’ve got is words, so I’ll try to paint you a verbal illustration. You’re like a ship–the old fashioned, wooden kind, with three masts and square sails. You’re ready to colonize the world, or at least explore it. Only your ship is piloted by monkeys. They’re the most agile and swift crew you could ask for. But they can’t talk. That shouldn’t stop them, though. You’re more prepared to go far (and in style) than you’ve been in ages; just don’t try telling anyone that. It’s no big deal; as long as you know not to bother trying to articulate your intentions (which is doomed to backfire, miserably), you’re free to just act on them, instead.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Children are better disposed to learn new languages; their brains are generally more flexible and able to form fresh structures to accommodate differing modes of thought. Using a different language to express your thoughts changes those thoughts fundamentally–which is pretty cool. If you have a kid, make them learn to speak fluently (and therefore think) in other tongues. But even more importantly, try to get back to the place where you could be flexible enough to think and talk about things in dramatically different ways. It’ll probably take you ten times as long as it would’ve when you were seven. But do it anyway. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

You’re a diesel engine being forced to run on moonshine. It’s a wonder you can get your motor started at all! Trying to operate without the things that nurture you is a bad mistake, but an understandable one, considering your circumstances. However, it’s time to correct it, before your whole gravity vehicle breaks down completely. Get loaded up with premium fuel this week. That might require a bit of running around and research, to get all the pieces in place, but better now than later, when running around will be about half as possible as it is now. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Admit it. You have no clue what you’re doing. Finally fess up to exactly how long you’ve been flying by the seat of your pants, and basically just guessing about which way to go and how to get there. We’ll actually admire you more, not less, once we learn that you haven’t planned everything out from the very beginning. It means you’re much more courageous than we suspected (and therefore hotter). Milk it. You’re a clueless but talented adventurer. Cast off the mantle of ruthless and foresighted plotter and don the one of dashing swashbuckler, and see how your life changes. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Don’t let people help themselves to an all-you-can-eat buffet of your soul’s best tricks. Those delicious morsels are special and rare. Bury them like truffles, under the ficus tree in the corner of your apartment if necessary. Put them someplace unsuspicious and altogether inconvenient, lest you retrieve them in a moment of weakness. Then you’ll be able to resist the subtle psychological torture and bribery employed by the search parties sent to plunder you of your coolest mojo, and you’ll still be able to dig it up once they’re gone, to be shared amongst those who really deserve it.

This week, all your supposedly tried-and-true techniques for navigating social situations will cease backfiring with such frequency. I’m sure you’ve noticed that whenever you’ve tried to turn on the charm lately you’ve mostly come off as a chump, instead. It’s kept you from getting jobs, laid, or your way in so many situations that part of you has started to feel like a real loser. Luckily, you’re not. It was just a bad patch. Come out swinging next week. You’re back on your game.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

I was a Sign last week, a marker on someone else’s newly-chosen path that she was doing the right thing. It was kind of cool; I didn’t need to do or say anything in particular, just be myself. That was enough to help her on her way. I mention it because the mantle of Holy Omen is being passed to you this week. Resist the temptation to overthink it, or to try and talk your way through it; you’ll simply screw it up with too many layers of complexity. This kind of thing is actually quite simple. If you stumble into the role of a significant character in someone else’s play, don’t freak out about what lines to say, or the direction of the plot. Just be yourself; that’s how you got the part in the first place. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

There’s a powerful hermit-force within you, the part of you that sometimes longs to go find a tiny, scarcely inhabited island somewhere, like Micronesia, and just hang out there for the rest of your life. Indulge yourself this week. Hell, go to Micronesia if you can afford it. It doesn’t pay to force yourself to be social just because it’s expected of you. You’re great with people when you want to be; when you’re not in the mood, you just end up stinging them instead. Then you feel guilty, and they’re in the fetal position, whimpering in misery. Nobody wants that. Go be a hermit for a while. Come back to civilization when you’re ready, not when we are.
