NFL News NFL CLAIMS UNDER-15 GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIPS TITLE The NFL’s Under-15 girls created history by winning the 2017 AFL Victoria Metro Junior Championships Division 1 premiership.

The girls upset the Yarra Junior Football League 6.4 (40) to 4.6 (30) in the grand final at Vermont Reserve on Saturday to claim the league’s first flag at the Championships under the NFL banner. NFL representative coach Chyloe Kurdas said the win was evidence that hard work pays off. “It was a good example that if you do all your work and do all your preparation really well, in lots of ways you have what you need on match-day,” Kurdas said. After falling to the YJFL by 44 points in Round 1 of the Championships, the girls bounced back in the decider to claim the upset win. With scores level at half-time, the NFL held off a determined YJFL challenge in the third term and managed to keep the scores tied at the last change. The NFL then took the ascendancy early in the last quarter and managed to hold sway in a tense finish, with a last-minute goal securing the 10-point win Kurdas was full of praise for her young side, which contained as many as 14 bottom-aged players, and said the representative program had been a success, regardless of yesterday’s result. “My ultimate goal for this program was helping the girls take on and develop the elite habits you are going to need if you want to be successful to stay in the highperformance pathway and maybe play AFLW in the future,” she said. “We never positioned this game as a grand final. I didn’t even utter the words until yesterday and I only said them a couple of times. We talked about it as the fourth game and the fourth opportunity to continue to apply what we’ve learned. “It was a rare opportunity in this setting to do a pre-test and a post-test. We played Yarra in game one and played Yarra in game four. “We were able to test ourselves and analyse how far we’ve come across the journey and see the value of all the things we’ve been practicing and applying and obviously we got the result on the scoreboard.” West Preston-Lakeside’s Ashleigh Snow received the best on ground medallion in the win, and was well supported by Maeve Chaplin, Alyssa Bannan and Guilia Ceravolo. Championships leading goal kicker Chloe Williams finished with a game-high three goals.

Kurdas attributed the side’s success to the even contribution of all players in the squad. “We didn’t have anyone yesterday that didn’t perform below their expected ability, in fact most of the team we rated as being above their expected ability so they really rose to the occasion which was exciting.” she said. “Across the four games 15 players were named in the best. We didn’t intend to share it around, it wasn’t about that. 15 players of our 26 were named in the best and what I loved was that we didn’t rely on one player. “I would like to highlight our captain Guilia Ceravolo who played her role for the team. Her tackling pressure was extraordinary and something we really focussed on was honouring the front spot, not just in your football but psychologically in your head and in life. “It has to be a theme of your life – make sure you take front spot and don’t let anyone take that from you. Be empowered. That was our theme yesterday and Guilia really led from the front there.” Kurdas also praised the work of her support staff, including assistant coaches David Craig, Deanna Berry and Aimee McDougall. “Everyone played their role really well, it wasn’t just the players it was also the coaching staff, runners and trainers. Everyone invested in their role and executed really well,” she said. “All three assistant coaches are Northern Football League developed people and I’m really proud that it was NFL people that were heavily involved in developing these girls. It’s a credit to the league. “I’d like to say a big thanks to the league for letting me implement the structure that I wanted to build. It was great to have that level of support and backing from the league. “I’m a big believer in creating enriched environments for strong performances and that is what the league provided for us.” WWW. THE NORTHERNER —  The Northern Football League Record

NFL News COACH OF THE MONTH – APRIL Congratulations to Heidelberg West senior Gary Cutler,

who was awarded the AFL Victoria Northern Region Coach of the Month for April.

Heidelberg West won three games during April and finished the month sitting in third-place on the ladder. This was in contrast to the previous two years where the club finished on the bottom of the ladder. In the past two years, Heidelberg West won just two matches – one in each year – so winning three matches in the opening month of the season was a great result by Gary, in his first year as coach of the Hawks. Gary fits all the criteria, as he is an accredited Level 1 coach and the club has worked diligently this year in recruiting well and developing their playing group to become a leading team in Division 3 for the first time in years. Since taking over in 2017, Gary has implemented and worked with the playing group in a number of areas: PLAYER / COACHING STAFF FEEDBACK AND GENERAL COMMENTS “2017 is my first year at Heidelberg West, for the previous three seasons I was at North Heidelberg as reserves coach where I also assisted with the seniors on game day. The opportunity to coach at senior level was given to me by Heidelberg West and I’m so grateful to them and very happy to have found my way here. My first objective was to get an idea of what we had and what we needed. I have had some great club people help me in list identification but by far the best feedback was from the clubs two best players in Kane and Brad Moore. The common thread I got from the two boys was that training standards had to be lifted if success was wanted.” PRE-SEASON “We set about organising a gruelling pre-season program, one in which the players completely grabbed with both hands. It was amazing to see how hard these guys were prepared to work. We organised some very early practice games so that I could have a look at things like decision making and skills under pressure. I feel that

as soon as the boys realised how much fitter they were, the belief in the group went through the roof.” DEVELOPMENT “We are a very young group in the seniors with only one player over 26 and most guys between 20-23. We also have a 16-year-old playing too. For us as a coaching group having such a young list has been great. Young guys don’t keep ghosts from past seasons results. They live in the now and that’s why we have been able to push them so hard. We have been very lucky in that we have been able to add some very good players into our club who have driven the training standards. We are very confident of our young list not only staying together but growing together. Our mission statement is a very simple one. TEAM, CLUB, SELF with no exceptions. The club and I have worked closely in setting the direction in which we are heading. The club have been fantastic in assisting me in all areas. We are teaching the guys to play a whole new way. We want them to be brave with the ball, courageous with their running and the number one rule is to enjoy. I feel that it is very important for them to enjoy playing the game again and hopefully they are.” REVIEWS “We have just completed our mid-year review with the players and feedback was not only given but also taken. I feel that all players need to have an input into our team and club. Our guys have shown great leadership in that most time I speak to a player about an error in the previous week he has already noted it for himself and it is generally fixed the following week. As coaches we speak nearly daily about getting continual improvement from the boys.” PLAYING GROUP “As stated we are a very young group and more importantly a very tight group. One of the main reasons behind our improvement has been the buy in from not only the guys that have been at the club but the new guys. There are no groups or cliques at West. The best player mixes with the least talented player and that’s our strength. We want our club to be a destination club where good footballers but more importantly good people want to come to play footy.” Gary will receive a $50 gift voucher from Urban Grooves Cafe (99 Grimshaw St, Greensborough), a $100 gift voucher from Amart Sports and a coaches book for winning the April Coach of the Month. He is also now in the running to win the 2017 AFCA Senior Coach of the Year, which will be announced at Mantra Bell City, Preston on Wednesday September 6. WWW. NFL. ORG. AU

NFL News TIGERS TAKING IT ONE WEEK AT A TIME

by Jarryd Barca

After winning just one game in the opening month

of the 2017 Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 season, reigning premier Heidelberg is now just percentage outside the top-five. Consecutive close wins against Northcote Park and West Preston-Lakeside since the Queen’s Birthday weekend bye have elevated the Tigers to sixth place on the ladder at the halfway point of the year. Despite his side’s improved form, playing co-coach Charles Gaylard is weary of the evenness of the competition and conceded his side must not look too far ahead. “For the situation that we’re in, we just have to keep winning games of football,” Gaylard told The Northerner. “We can’t launch ourselves too far ahead, and I know it’s a cliché, but it’s also a reality. All we can do is focus on each training session and how we’re going to get better.” Heidelberg opened its premiership defence with a 13-point loss to West Preston-Lakeside in the opening game of the season, before falling 10 points short of Bundoora and 51 points short against Macleod in the fortnight that followed. A 0-3 record had Heidelberg facing the unlikely prospect of a bottom-five finish as it sat on the foot of the ladder with a lowly percentage of 72.39. But Gaylard insisted the Tigers heads never dropped despite the slow start. “Yes it was a disappointing start to the year, but our spirits never waivered,” he said. “While results weren’t going our way, we had some really quality leaders that were able to keep the spirits high around the club. “They kept focusing on the things we needed to do. They really drove that. Those guys were really good and kept driving the high standards in a number of areas. “We’d been working a lot during training and we knew that eventually it would come together for us.” The resurgent Tigers have been boosted by the return of several key senior players in recent weeks, allowing them to better execute their game plan. After missing the opening two months of the season,

premiership ruckman Sam Gilmore is one of many players who have had an immediate impact since coming into the side at Round 8. “Sam’s an exceptional player and has been really good for us,” Gaylard said. “He came back for us a few weeks ago and did a mini pre-season then got up for the Northcote game.” Gaylard ensured there was a silver-lining to the club’s disappointing start to the year. With a host of senior players unavailable for selection, the Tigers were able to showcase what was to come in the future. “We were able to blood a few young guys early in the year which was the positive thing for not having all our senior players in the team,” he said. “We saw some really positive signs from our young kids and we see them at the footy club for the next decade.” Heidelberg now has a chance to jump into the top-five this week if it defeats fourth-placed Bundoora at Yulong Reserve. “We absolutely give ourselves a chance and obviously where both teams are positioned on the ladder, it’s going to be really hotly contested,” Gaylard said. “We’re really looking forward to it as a football club.” WWW. NFL News ROOSTERS LEFT TO RUE TURNOVER

by Tim Michell (Leader)

West Preston-Lakeside paid the ultimate price for a

last-minute turnover against a resurgent Heidelberg in Round 9, falling by three points at Warringal Park. The Roosters led with 60 seconds on the clock in the Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 blockbuster, but were unable to hold on as the Tigers claimed a thrilling 10.13 (73) to 10.10 (70) victory. “We made a couple of poor decisions in the last 30 seconds,” coach Rob Maiorana said. “Heidelberg made the most of that, hit the front again and the siren pretty much went five or 10 seconds later. “The ball went deep in our backline and just the way we brought it out of our defence, we kicked it to a dangerous area which gave them a chance to go back the other way.” The visitors had rallied from 25 points down at quartertime to lead by four points at the main break. “I thought it was good of the boys to work back into the game and have a lead at halftime,” Maiorana said. “It was a game that ebbed and flowed all day.” Heidelberg regained control in the third quarter, taking a 16-point advantage to the final break. Inspired by five goals from Ahmed Saad on his return, the Roosters hit the front during the last term and

appeared set for their seventh win of the campaign. The reigning premier responded to the challenge, claiming its second win by less than a goal in two weeks after downing Northcote Park by one point in Round 8. Jacob Ramaekers was adjudged the Roosters’ best, while Mathew Stokes and Saad were prominent. West Preston is hopeful Jaylon Thorpe (illness) will return to face Whittlesea away this Saturday. Liam McVeigh (hand) is expected to be sidelined for another 1-2 weeks. “It threw us out a little bit, we had to go in with a makeshift forward line and alter a couple of things,” Maiorana said. “But that gave some other boys an opportunity.” Maiorana said West Preston-Lakeisde was keen for retribution against the Eagles after a four-point loss at home in Round 4. “Every one is a must win from here on,” he said. “Whittlesea won’t be an easy pushover, that’s for sure. We’ll be preparing for a pretty big fight, given they knocked us over first time.” The Roosters remained a game clear in third after Greensborough beat Bundoora by 13 points, while Heidelberg moved to sixth, outside the top five on percentage.

NFL News BULLDOGS HOLD-OFF BEARS

by Samuel Zito

A four-point home win over Lower Plenty pushed

North Heidelberg back into first place on the A Plus Labour Solutions Division 2 ladder. In a low-scoring and physical battle, the Bulldogs managed to outlast their determined visitors to hold on for a 10.6 (66) to 8.14 (62) win at Shelley Reserve. Lower Plenty will rue missed opportunities during the four-point loss, with the result pushing it outside the top-four for the first time this season. After taking an outstanding diving mark, Tom Keys had a set shot from 45m in the dying stages of the game. The shot narrowly missed to the left, with the Bulldogs able to hold on in a desperate final minute. Despite only 18 goals being kicked for the day, the match was played with finals-like intensity with few easy possessions to be had throughout the day. Blair Harvey was superb across half back for North Heidelberg and used his precise foot skills to regularly set-up attacking chains from defensive 50m. Nicholas Matthews and Daniel Bramich were also strong in defence for the Bulldogs and were able to restrict in-form Lower Plenty forwards Darcy Barden and Mark Favrin to three goals. Brent Harvey enjoyed an absorbing battle against Fabian Dorbolo. The Bear tagger was able to limit Harvey’s damage, however the AFL games record holder still managed to have an influence on the game. Matthew Duckworth was standout for the visitors, particularly in the third term when he found plenty of the ball and kicked a superb goal in congestion. Laurie Naismith won his battle against Shane Harvey, keeping the North Heidelberg superboot to a solitary major. Naismith received strong support from his fellow defenders, who often dropped back to outnumber the Bulldogs star. No side was able to kick a goal in a dour first quarter, with Lower Plenty heading into the first change leading 2-1. The ball pinballed between the two 50m arcs for much of the term, with both sides lacking a quality final kick inside 50m. The beginning of the second term was similar to the first, with both sides’ defensive lines absorbing pressure tremendously. Favrin broke the stalemate with the first goal of the day at the 14-minute mark of the second quarter. North

responded with its first through Leigh Gilbert five minutes later, before Marcus Hill slotted another soon after to put the Bulldogs ahead entering time-on. A superb set shot from the pocket from Darcy Barden gave his side a two-point lead at the main change, however the Bears were down to two on the bench following a knee injury to Sam Paterson and head knock to Tim Duckworth. The game opened up during the third quarter, with Brody Tardio getting North off to a fast start after a clever assist from Brent Harvey. The sides traded goals throughout the term, with a major to Tom Keys on the siren locking the scores at 40-apiece at three-quarter time. The opening ten minutes of the last quarter was again an arm-wrestle until Marc Lonergan stamped himself on the game. The big man was swung forward and kicked two goals in two minutes, before another to Marcus Hill gave the Bulldogs a match-high 17-point buffer. Lower Plenty bravely fought back and two goals in two minutes to Jordan Sacco and Dorbolo cut the Bears’ deficit to four points entering time-on. Despite finishing the match with the momentum, the visitors were unable to find a goal to take the lead, as North Heidelberg held on for its seventh win of the season. NFL News BLUES STORM HOME

by Doug Long

Kilmore came from 21 points down midway through the final term to grab an eight-point win over Heidelberg West at Heidelberg Park. After trailing at final break, the home team appeared to have the game in hand when Jacob Duson kicked the goal to put the margin over three majors. But Kilmore dominated thereafter to score arguably its best win in the NFL, winning 15.7 (97) to 13.11 (89). The result came in stark contrast to the Round 2 match at J.J. Clancy Reserve, which the Hawks won emphatically by 70 points. The win draws Kilmore level with Heidelberg West and Epping on five wins, albeit trailing both those teams by over 30 percentage points. In a pulsating final term, Ben Cooney booted three of his five for the day, while Lachlan Gough snared two of his three majors to get the Blues over the line. Both teams were guilty of hitting opponents on the chest in the first stanza – which was dominated by the Hawks. Kilmore trailed by 13 points at half time, but made its move in the third term to lead by five points at the last break. A feature of the Blues’ second half was their excellent pressure. It was described as “sensational” by their coach at the three quarter time address. The pressure applied by Kilmore saw the Hawks struggle to move the ball down the field. As a result, their players tried some adventurous switches from defence and gave away a few goals in the process. “Turnovers killed us today,” Heidelberg West coach Gary Cutler said. “They ran harder for longer today.” Harley Mozdzierz starred for Heidelberg West up forward with six majors and could’ve easily kicked more after missing a few set shots. Justin Bentley ran all day and used the ball well for the Hawks, while ruckman Jarryd Coulson regularly put his team to advantage with his tap work. The Hawks weren’t helped by indiscipline which cost them two yellow cards. The best for the Blues were harder to find, due to a very even contribution across the board.

Captain Ben Taskmakis showed composure in his ball use upon his return to the side. 17-year-old Calder Cannons-listed player Callum May contributed well, while Adam Milne and playing-assistant Leigh Irons were involved in everything. Thomas McMillan also finished off well with four goals, while Adam Goudge was a late inclusion and played his first game for 12 months. “The boys showed a lot of character when challenged in the last quarter,” a proud Kilmore coach Nathan Phillips said. “Our fitness showed out to be able to overpower the Hawks and then hang on for the last few minutes.” The win was especially satisfying as Kilmore had been a team often unable to fight back in such circumstances in recent years. Kilmore can potentially move into the top-four with a win in Round 11, depending on other results, with a home game at J.J. Clancy Reserve against Epping. Heidelberg West travels to Mill Park Lakes Reserve to take on South Morang. The Hawks will need to win to prevent the winner of Kilmore vs Epping replacing them in the top-four. MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview ONTO THE BACK NINE The second half of the 2017 Meadows Greyhounds Division 1 season shapes to be an enthralling race to the finals, with the stage set for an interesting final nine rounds. Macleod and Northcote Park have established breathing space at the top of the ladder, with their 8-1 and 7-2 respective records holding them in great shape to secure a top-three finish at the conclusion of the home and away season. Should the Kangaroos and Cougars continue their strong form, the chasing pack will be fighting for the final three places in the top-five – with a dog-fight well and truly on the cards between a host of sides. Round 9 defeats have left West Preston-Lakeside and Bundoora slightly vulnerable inside the top-five, particularly with Greensborough and Heidelberg beginning to hit their straps at the halfway point of the season. Despite missing a host of key players, Montmorency is hanging in the finals race, while Hurstbridge continues to impress and must in the picture to pull off the impossible – a finals berth in its first season back in the top flight. Eltham and Whittlesea have proven themselves capable on their given day, but both would currently be focusing their energy on avoiding relegation. However, such is the evenness of competition, a string of wins will have both knocking on the door of the topfive if they can reverse recent form. Yulong Reserve will host one of the round’s most highly-anticipated matches when Bundoora hosts Heidelberg. The Bulls are out to arrest a three-game losing streak, while the Tigers are aiming to jump inside the top-five for the first time in 2017. Bundoora looked well on track to claim its sixth win of the season when it led Greensborough by 20 points in a hard-fought battle at War Memorial Park. However, the Bulls couldn’t contain the Boro thereafter – conceding 10 of the final 15 goals to go down by 13 points. Danny Younan was superb once again and was his side’s only player to receive votes from both coaches in the Coaches Player of the Year voting. Gary Moorcroft slotted three goals, while Matty Dennis and Josh Grabowski again produced strong games. Just three matches after playing off against Northcote 12

Park for top spot, the Bulls’ place inside the top-five is suddenly looking at risk following an unfortunate run with injuries, ahead of a showdown with a Heidelberg outfit on the rise. Back-to-back thrilling wins have dragged the Tigers’ season back on track and percentage alone keeps the reigning premiers outside the top-five, following last week’s last-gasp win over West Preston-Lakeside. Will Knight proved to be match-winner in the threepoint result, intercepting a defensive kick by the Roosters in the final minute and coolly slotting the goal from just inside the 50m arc. The Tigers had earlier kicked 0.8 in the final term after leading by 16 at the last change. It capped off a strong game for the young Tiger, who was among his side’s most influential players, along with Sam Gilmore, Marcus Marigliani and skipper Michael Brunelli, who made a strong impact in his return from injury. The Tigers will be looking to reverse the result of their last match against Bundoora – a 10-point defeat at Warringal Park in Round 1. The Bulls also took points in the last clash at Yulong Reserve, ending the Tigers’ 10-game winning streak to start the 2016 season in a 75-point demolition. A place inside the top-five is also at stake when Greensborough makes the short trip to Montmorency, where the winner will square the ledger at 5-5. The Magpies were 17 points to the good when the sides met in Round 3. Tristan Stead marked his 150th senior game with a best on ground performance to steer the Boro to their fourth-straight win in Round 9. The skipper was deployed forward and kicked a career-best six goals in his milestone match as Greensborough entered the top-five for the first time. Jacob Ireland, Ricky Mullins and Josh Callaway were also important in the come-from-behind win, while Nick Riddle appeared in his side’s best players for the seventh time this season. While the form-line might suggest the Boro will enter this game as favourites, Montmorency’s performance at De Winton Park indicated it is far from an out of form side, with the 34-point losing margin not doing the Magpies any justice. With key players out and coach Ben Haynes overseas,

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 - Preview the Magpies took it right up to the ladder-leader to lead at half time and trail by just nine points at the final break. They had the better of the opening stages of the last quarter without converting it on the scoreboard. Jesse Donaldson and Matt Hunt won plenty of the football, Patty Fitzgerald kicked a team-high four goals, while Xavier Cahill and Bobby Lamanna both produced season-best performances. Having already displayed its capability to contend in the top flight, Hurstbridge faces arguably its sternest test when it travels to De Winton Park to take on Macleod. The Bridges took it right up to the Roos in their Round 1 clash, before falling away late in the piece. The Bridges remain just one win outside the top-five after last week scoring a comfortable 43-point win over Eltham at Ben Frilay Oval, with the home side recording 40 scoring shots in the shootout. Jack Grimes and Tom Grimes (four goals) excelled in the win, while Rhyce Shaw made his maiden appearance after committing for a handful of games, in between coaching commitments for Sydney’s reserves. All three of Hurstbridge’s wins have come at home this season. With three of the next four games to be played on the road, the next month will prove vital in determining whether the Bridges spend the final weeks of the year striving for finals or fighting to avoid relegation. Macleod did enough last week to secure its third win on the trot and Garry Ramsay’s side now looks perfectly placed to secure a double-chance in the finals for the third consecutive year. Matthew Clark’s bag of five goals was his best haul with the season, with the strong-marking forward now sitting sixth on the goal kicking table with 22 majors – which includes 15 in his past four matches. Ned McKeown and Hamish Paynter were once again prolific, while Jack Langford and James Condello each capped off strong performances with three goals. Northcote Park will be looking to keep the pressure on Macleod at the top of the table when it hosts Eltham at Bill Lawry Oval. The Cougars were slow out of the blocks for secondconsecutive week in last Saturday’s clash against Whittlesea. After trailing by nine points at the first change, they were able to take control of the match – kicking 15 goals to five after quarter time to win by 55 points.

Bronik Davies and Jordan Perry got the job done in the middle of the ground, winning plenty of ball at the coal face to ensure the Cougars’ forwards had plenty of opportunities to kick a winning score. Dylan Campbell and Gerard Sutton backed-up recent strong form to again be named among the best, while Bryn Barnes-Webb, Ricky Fandrich and Jackson Starcevich combined for ten goals. Eltham couldn’t contain Hurstbridge on the smaller confines of Ben Frilay Oval and slipped to ninth place on the ladder. The last time the Panthers sat in this position they produced a massive upset to down Macleod. The damage was done in the second term last week, with a nine-point quarter time deficit blown out to five goals by the main break. Despite fighting out the game, the Panthers couldn’t make any inroads on the scoreboard as they fell by a margin of greater than seven goals for the fourth time. Anton Woods’ sparkling touch continued, with the star midfielder again putting in a dominant display despite his side losing. Brandon Freeman was opportunistic with five goals, while Sean Currie was good. Whittlesea and West Preston-Lakeside are on the rebound when they clash at the Whittlesea Showgrounds. The Roosters will be looking to avenge a shock four-point loss in the pair’s Round 4 outing. In an even campaign, the Eagles look to be the first side to have fallen from finals contention, following last week’s fifth-consecutive defeat. The 55-point final margin was the club’s second heavy defeat to Northcote Park this year. Janan Daniel and Brenton Briffa were their side’s best players in the loss, while Jai Robinson and Riley Dyson continue to display strong leadership in what is proving to be a difficult period for the Eagles. After paying the ultimate price for a late turnover at Warringal Park, West Preston-Lakeside will be desperate to bounce back quickly as it looks to keep its grip on third spot. Trailing by 26 points at quarter time and 16 points at the last change, the Roosters twice fought back against the Tigers. They looked set to record a come-from behind win, before losing the lead with nine seconds remaining on the clock. Mathew Stokes and Jacob Ramaekers were among their side’s best, while Ahmed Saad booted five goals to stretch his lead atop the goal kicking table. WWW. NFL. ORG. AU

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 BUNDOORA This week we are home to Heidelberg. SENIORS: A very hard fought game was played at Greensborough. No matter where our teams are placed on the ladder it’s always going to be a hard hitting game with no quarter given by either side. It was a game that we controlled till Greensborough goaled after the siren at three quarter time to hit the lead and once they got the sniff of a win they never allowed us to control the game again. Our best were Nipper Marshall, Matty Dennis and Josh Grabowski. RESERVES: Pressure, pressure, pressure was our mission against Greensborough as coach Stephen Krstevski nearly had all bases covered and we nearly pulled off a win. It was quite an achievement to draw with Greensborough as they had been unbeaten this season and I’m looking forward to see how we go against the Tigers. Best players were Brod Gray, Matty Little, Dean Richardson, Daniel Guccione and Housha Binn. UNDER-19: Fast execution of the ball had us dominating the play and the great work in our backline by Jamie Ozimek, Matthew Morison and Steven Christou played a huge part in an outstanding win, not forgetting our full forward Milad Almahtrah who

HEIDELBERG Another big test looms today as we travel to Bundoora. TODAY: Bundoora has been the scene of some cracking games over the years. Here’s hoping we can get the points without the accompanying cardiac arrests of the last few weeks. SENIORS: Nail biters seem to be the order of the day lately. We hosted West Preston-Lakeside and as has been the pattern in our recent hit-outs a tight contest was the order of the day. The Bergers jumped out early only to have the visitors lead at the long change. The second half was also tight. Both sides had chances to take the game by the scruff of the neck and neither was able to capitalise on the scoreboard. 7 behinds without a goal in the last made for severely chewed fingernails, until Will Knight slotted cooly from 50. RESERVES: In the twos West Preston-Lakeside kicked away in the third quarter. Our boys had a cracking final term but couldn’t reel the visitors in. SOCIAL: Our Godfathers group joined us for footy, food and banter and a good day was had by all. Word 14

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 MACLEOD We are at back at De Winton Park today to take on Hurstbridge.

SENIORS: A workmanlike performance in the second half against Montmorency last week meant we got the chocolates for the third week running and we maintain top spot. It was tit for tat early but Monty got on a roll in the second term kicking four goals to two to lead by eight points at the main break. But we made every post a winner in the third quarter, booting seven goals to four and we held on in determined style in the final stanza. Bluey Clark (five goals) and Jack Langford (three) were focal points in attack. RESERVES: A big win in the end after a pretty ugly first half. We clicked into gear kicking five goals in the third term and brought it home with nine in the final quarter. Lynchy (five goals) looked a class above everyone. UNDER-19: The boys were up and about from the opening bounce and notched up a big win. Tyler Peirce was the star with six goals. NETBALL: Macleod 1 went down to Epping while

HURSTBRIDGE This week we travel to De Winton Park to take on ladder leaders Macleod

SENIORS: Well what a week in footy does. It started Tuesday night with the boys wanting to make amends for our loss the previous week. The whole week on the track was magnificent and we certainly were up for it against a strong Eltham team that had a lot to prove also. Our guys were on from the start again and had 11 scoring shots in the first quarter to take a small lead. The attack on the ball was first class and at half time we snuck out to a five-goal lead. We spoke heavily about learning from our lapses which have cost us and I could see in the players’ eyes that they were not going to let this one slip. It was a free flowing game all day and we were really pleased to get the right outcome against a team that we rate really highly. This week sees us take on the ladder leader. This will be a great challenge for our kids and we will see if we have learnt anything from our Round 1 loss to Macleod. All the best for the weekend boys. RESERVES: What a great day for Chicken and the boys on their fantastic win. Well done boys the club and 16

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 MONTMORENCY We welcome a resurgent Boro in what is always a

must-see encounter. Victory against Rob Hyde’s boys would be sweet but won’t come easy. SENIORS: Missing several of our better players and our coach (away on business), the boys served it up to the ladder-leader and were right in the game early in the last quarter. A couple of missed opportunities and a lapse in concentration allowed Macleod to score three goals and get on top in the latter stages of the last term. But we make no excuses because Macleod was too good overall on the day. There were more positives than negatives, and our link-up play down the corridor was good to watch. Ball magnet Matt Hunt, Alex Chiocci and Big Joel were good all day, while Bomber was at his consistent best and Jesse Donaldson showed why he is a class player. Our veteran defenders in Josh Slattery and Brett Zorzi were also solid. It was also encouraging to see the twos players who got their chance have a big dip, especially Xavier Cahill. RESERVES: The twos supplied several players to a depleted senior side and suffered accordingly against Macleod. Our blokes may lack some skills but always a

GREENSBOROUGH We head to Montmorency to play for the Adamson trophy. SENIORS: Made it four in a row with a memorable win over Bundoora. In his 150th senior game, skipper Tristan Stead put on a master class, booting six goals in a game-winning performance. At half-time we trailed by 20 points, but thanks to a six-goal to two third term, we led at the final change before eventually running out 13-point winners. Jacob Ireland and Josh Callaway starred in the resurgence, Jamie Craker battled manfully against the league’s best, while Ricky Mullins was instrumental in our high “hard ball gets” numbers. It may sound like a broken record, but it’s another huge game against Monty, who we’re edging out of a topfive spot by percentage. RESERVES: Played out a thrilling draw against Bundoora. We were slow to find our feet and a tough, contested Bundoora outfit were more than up for the fight, with the draw probably a just result. Whilst it wasn’t necessarily the prettiest of games, both sides slugged it out right until the final siren, and have set the standard for future meetings. Rhys Boyden was dangerous up forward, while Max Johnston was huge in the ruck. Nick Johnson and Marcus Allen were solid 18

As Robin would say to Batman: “Holy blasts from the past.’’ Like a good bottle of wine, they get better with age. Thanks for helping out boys. Maybe I will make a comeback. Well, that may not be a good thing! UNDER-19: The young fellas were never in it against Macleod and will be aiming for a better performance against the old foe. WOMEN: The women are keeping the club’s name on the winner’s list and in the finals race. The girls had an amazing win to claim the Chivers Cup, sponsored by W. L. Chivers Plumbing. The 97-point victory against Whitehorse saw eight of our girls kick goals, including Maddy Bayes (four), Sian Capito (four), Nikki Blythe (two) and Shelby Rhodes (two). Every team member contributed. UNDER-19: The future stars slumped to their secondstraight loss, going down to Bundoora by 60 points. After a promising start, the boys were no match for the Bulls in the second half. Jaylon Smith, Matt Lewis and Basil Psarakos were shining lights in a disappointing performance. AROUND THE CLUB: Thanks to everyone who helped make the High Tea a great success. And of course, a huge thanks to Caz Brindley and Kellie Sannholm and their helpers for organising such a great day. MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 NORTHCOTE PARK This week we host Eltham. SENIORS: Once again the seniors had an ordinary start but after quarter-time outscored the Eagles three to one. The midfield was on top with Bronik and Jordan our best two. Dylan and Sutts are in fine touch and Carts and Svarc were among many other contributors. RESERVES: The reserves had their second huge win in a row and now head the ladder on percentage, if not points. Cobba had a day out kicking nine and could have kicked a dozen or more; Michael’s six made it 11 for the day, Dylan dominated the ruck, Mickyo took the mark of his career and Dezi and Jayden got plenty of the ball. UNDER-19: The under-19s’ must-win victory gives them momentum for the challenges ahead. Liam, Michael, Harro (nice to see this talent regaining his touch), Benny, Cal and Adrian were among the best. NETBALL: Bianca played her 50th netball game for Northcote Park on Friday. She has been our guiding light, our mentor, always smiling, even if she is

ELTHAM This week we travel down to Northcote Park. On paper it looks a pretty daunting task against the Cougars. Hopefully we can turn that around.

FOOTBALL: The seniors were pretty well outplayed all over the ground. Hurstbridge were far more desperate than us, they really wanted the win. We were able to kick a decent score but it was just not enough. One good thing is that we not give up trying right to the end. The reserves had a strong win and are back in the hunt for a finals berth. PRESIDENTS LUNCH: – 75 percent booked. Saturday August 5 at the new Eltham Community Centre. Special guest speaker is Kevin Sheedy. 3-time premiership player and 4-time premiership coach. 11:30am to 2:00pm prior to our home game against Hurstbridge. Two-course lunch with beer, wine and soft drink. Online bookings available at elthamfc.com.au. PANTHER CIRCLE: Tickets out now. Our major effort for the year – your chance to share in $12,000 worth of cash prizes, including weekly prizes leading up to Grand Prize Night on Saturday August 19. First Draws will be Thursday night June 8 with two $100 cash prizes going off. This will 20

ordering everyone to do another set of hill sprints with resistance bands. Bianca is a networker; she brings people together and helps them be their best. The club would not be where it is today without her, and we are extremely luck and grateful to have her as part of our club. BEST WISHES: Another unsung hero, waterboy, Sam Harford, has a health set-back. Everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery not only because we would miss his infectious smile around the place but also because Northcote Juniors need him back starring on the ground for them as well. SOCIAL: The Gold Cougar days are on 22 July (Macleod) and 29 July (Heidelberg) and a Sponsor’s day is on 19 August during the Montmorency game. That should be three good games for people who are the lifeblood of the club to enjoy. The player’s Cocktail Night is also on 22 July; see Joel for details and tickets. SPONSORS: Our sponsors of the week are David Feeney and Nazih Elasmar.

MEADOWS GREYHOUNDS DIVISION 1 WHITTLESEA This week we host West Preston-Lakeside SENIORS: We faced a very good team in Northcote Park last week and although we were beaten on the day, there were some positive signs coming out of the match. The boys took the game on and starting playing a bit more of the typical Whittlesea brand of football. Briffa, Jordy, Janan and Langers played their best game for the year and Jai and Riley continued to lead from the front. We hope to see another stepped improvement against West Preston-Lakeside. RESERVES: As we continue to struggle for numbers through a large injury list, we were thankful for the support provided from a few old faces last week. As always, the boys continued to fight it out to the end, with Pettit, Draper, Robinson, Dempsey, Burgess and Garrett Heenan among the best for the day. With some blokes returning from injury we hope to be competitive today. UNDER-19: Coach Simon Young said that last week’s loss was a disappointing result for the team. It was an important game for us that would have given us some breathing space inside the top-five, and instead

WEST PRESTON-LAKESIDE This week it’s up Plenty Rd to take on the Eagles who have always tested us in the past.

FOOTBALL: Nine seconds to go we were three points in front and then...the twos survived a late surge and after all the results both remain third on the ladder, but don’t forget we have a game up on everyone, except the Tigers. Next week we’re back home to take on Northcote Park and, yes, the Mellerick/McNeice Cup is safe AROUND THE TRAPS: Good week for our horse owners. Ernie Dingo has done the impossible tearing his other hammy whilst recovering from tearing the other one. The twos umpires featured one former champ and a potential future champ, well done Frosty and Snowy. Young Tills is doing well at Coburg, let’s hope his form continues. On the next stage former junior champion, premiership player, multiple B&F and Lew Hall trophy winner Trent Cotchin was on course to kick six last week. SPONSORS: The club is forever indebted to its sponsors so this week’s sponsor is Floridia Cheese so for all your cheese needs see the boys at 327 Settlement Rd Thomastown 22

we fell out on percentage. Northcote Park’s skills were cleaner on the day, which proved to be the difference. West Preston-Lakeside really tested the boys in our last encounter and Simon won’t be satisfied with anything less than the four points. NETBALL: Hope the girls are well rested after their bye last week and ready to continue their improving form to notch up a really well-deserved win. THANKS: Special thanks to Whittlesea Junior Football Club for organising and hosting the Screamin’ Eagles night. It was a popular and entertaining function and we look forward to working closely with you on other future events. LADIES DAY: We hope all the guests have a great time at the Ladies Day today. Thanks to Kylie, Tracey, Mary and the rest of the committee for getting the day together. Special thanks to our event sponsors Bread & Buttercream. $5,000 DRAW: Have you got your ticket for the $5,000 Draw yet?? Saturday July 15. $50/ea, includes free food, beer, wine, soft drink between 7:30-10:30pm. We will also have player interviews and random prize draws. Tickets available from the bar, players or committee.

WOMEN’S: Footballers are going for nine in a row for the ladies. There’s no stopping so have a rest this week. The A grade netball and twos both back on the winners list last week. Netball courts are almost complete. JUNIORS: Are heading towards the pointy end and we have many teams booking a spot in the finals, we wish them well. We had five girls in the successful NFL team last week with Snowy winning the medal. MEMBERSHIPS: Sick of paying to get in? Become a Rooster member, starting from as little as $30. See Dooga to collect yours. IMPORTANT DATES: For the girls – July 8 See Robyn 0407 112 253 or Lisa 0433 521 862 to book your seats for Ladies Day, featuring Dave O’Neill and food by DiParsia Catering; July 29 – High Tea; July 29 – Is the huge Man O Man night and Natasi Events Manager isn’t holding back and ensured we have the next Saturday off to recover. SOCIAL: Celebrating 70 years since the West Preston FC was established. August 5 is the date so keep an eye out for more details. Next golf game is at Yarrambat on July 19. New players welcome.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 - Preview CURVEBALLS ADD INTRIGUE AT HALFWAY MARK There were surprises aplenty in Round 9 of A Plus

Labour Solutions Division 2, as three of the top-four sides going into the round were defeated. The shack up of ladder positions has made Round 10 one of the most intriguing rounds of the season. Diamond Creek will be looking to atone for last week’s poor performance against Thomastown when it travels to Lower Plenty. The Demons failed to perform at the level which has seen them dominate the season and a lack of killer instinct in front of goal saw them drop a game they were expected to win. One of the few issues for the Demons this season is their inaccuracy in front of goal. In five of the nine games this season they have kicked more behinds than goals, including last week when they kicked 5.13. Lower Plenty currently finds itself in fifth-place on the ladder at the halfway point of the season. Last week’s defeat to North Heidelberg was the Bears’ fourth defeat to a team inside the top-four from five matches. Despite having only two fit players on the bench after half time, Lower Plenty will view the defeat as a result that got away – losing by four points despite having six more scoring shots. Laurie Naismith and Fabian Dorbolo thrived in defensive roles, however the loss of Sam Paterson to knee injury is a massive blow, with the youngster among the club’s most important players over the first two months of the year. A match that has gained significant interest following last week’s result is Thomastown vs North Heidelberg. The Bears pulled off their best win of the season, defeating Diamond Creek by 12 points and climbing to third on the ladder. The win was all the more remarkable after the visitors lost Daniel Chadwick and James Mercuri to injuries. Jacob Osei-Duro and Cameron Dawson snared three goals each, while Joseph Vaccaro, Matthew Vasilevski and David Folino were the Bears’ best. The Bears take on a North Heidelberg side that returned to the top of the ladder following its close victory over Lower Plenty. With scores level at three quarter time, the Bulldogs kicked four final-term goals to secure their seventh win. Blair Harvey was a standout off half back, and was joined in the best players by Brent Harvey and Nicholas Matthews. Marcus Hill and Marc Lonergan both booted

by Christopher Chrysostomou

two goals, with the latter’s both coming in the last term after being thrust forward. Two teams coming off Round 9 victories meet at A.K. Lines Reserve when Watsonia plays Lalor. An eight-goal opening term got Watsonia off to a flyer in its six-point upset victory over the Fitzroy Stars. The Saints then overcame a half time deficit with a dominant third term, before holding off their fastfinishing visitors. Scott Barnett was best on ground, with Ben Kowski and Daniel Norden also important in the confidenceboosting result, which improved Watsonia’s record to 3-6 in its return to second division. Corey McCall’s side had eight separate goal kickers, which is the equal most they have had for the season. Jeremy Bennett and Allan Young were the leading goal kickers with three apiece. Lalor notched its second win for the season in a sixpoint victory over Panton Hill. The Bloods trailed for most of the day but kicked five final-term goals to run over the Redbacks. Terence Upoko, Beau Delcus and Harley Nancarrow were the Bloods best in the important victory, which importantly puts them two-wins and percentage away from the bottom of the ladder. Two sides who suffered disappointing results last weekend meet when the Fitzroy Stars travel to Panton Hill. A win last week would have cemented third position on the ladder for the Stars, however a number of lacklustre periods in the game saw them slip to a shock loss, despite seven goals from Vaasili Tuifao and strong games from Kain Proctor and Malcolm Dow. The heat will now be on the Stars to not repeat the performance again this week, at a venue that has provided some difficulties in the past. Panton Hill let victory slip out of its hands when it failed to hold on against Lalor, with the Redbacks left to lament wasted opportunities after kicking 11.18 in the six-point loss. Dane Robertson Matthew Fowler and Cameron Jordan were their side’s best, while Daniel Haynes and Jordan each slotted three goals. Despite losing, the Redbacks’ ability to move on quickly from such a massive Round 8 defeat would give them confidence they can string a couple of wins in the second half of the year. WWW. NFL. ORG. A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 LOWER PLENTY A day of mixed fortunes at The Kennel last Saturday as all three teams took on North Heidelberg.

FOOTBALL: The Cubs continued their dominance with a comfortable win. A very undermanned reserves side struggled all day, but never gave up as they were outgunned by a much stronger Bulldogs side. Thanks to Egga and Doggie for pulling on the jumper and helping the boys out. The seniors team played their best football of the year in a tense struggle that wasn’t decided until very late in the last quarter. Straight kicking might have been the difference, but the endeavour and willingness at the contest was a stand out. A special mention to Paul Pap who slotted seamlessly into the side in his first senior game, and to Leigh Gray who played half a game in the twos before getting a last minute call up into the senior side. SOCIAL: On the social scene, the Mid Season Ball was held at the Heidelberg Golf Club on Saturday night. A great band, a photo booth and some very dodgy, but well received, awards saw all who attended have a great night. All the social functions have been a stand

DIAMOND CREEK This week we travel to Lower Plenty. SENIORS: Well, for the first time this year we came up against an opposition who came more ready to play than we were. So what we learnt is that our preparation always needs to be at the highest level. Despite this we were nearly good enough to steal the win and will benefit a lot from the learnings out of this game. Bryce, Chappy, Tyler, Marchy and Hugh tried hard all day. We should all be looking forward to Lower Plenty this week. RESERVES: The guys finally got the monkey of the back with a great win against Thomastown. It was a hard fought first half with both sides playing great footy, but thanks to a great third quarter, where our skill and endurance became clear, we ran away with an 11-goal win. NETBALL: Round 10 ended up being one many of us would like to do over, in one of our worst rounds this season. DC1 – Playing a pretty settled game for the first three quarters into the 3/4 time break with a handy lead, before winning well against South Morang. 26

DC2 – An inconsistent game with moments of brilliance but we just struggled to get continuous flow down the court. DC3 – A game where we just struggled to find rhythm and consistency. DC4 – Another game that saw inconsistent passages of play. DC5 – After a win last week we took the court with a heap of enthusiasm and managed to keep things competitive for the first half. Not a great round for Creek. SOCIAL: Poker Night tonight so let’s get behind this function as it is a major fundraiser for our club. 10K tickets need to be returned to Loges ASAP. The President’s Lunch is on the 5th of August. See Dave Taylor to book your table. GO CREEK!

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 PANTON HILL This week we host the Fitzroy Stars. SENIORS: Defeat from the jaws of victory ... the one that got away! In control of the game all day and we appeared to have the answers at every attempt Lalor made to get back into the game ... at least until three quarter time! Lalor pushed and hit harder on the scoreboard than we did ... concentration was off resulting in our one goal six final term to Lalor’s five goals one ... pressured out of the game it seems. Congratulations to Cam Jordan and Taiter on your games last week. RESERVES: Only way to describe our effort was well and truly below par last week against Lalor. It was very disappointing in what might have been a great opportunity to add another win to our season. We need to learn that unless you bring the right attitude to any game, regardless of the opposition, you just don’t win ... simple as that. On at least one positive, our last quarter proved to everyone that very point. Congratulations to

FITZROY STARS This week we travel to the always difficult Panton Hill to try to get on the winner’s ledger again.

SENIORS: With a chance to put pressure on the toptwo, it was imperative to again fix up Watsonia at their ground. A good start was essential but we certainly didn’t do that, allowing a so-called lesser side to kick eight goals in the first quarter. To our credit we bounced back to get in front at the main break by five points but that’s when all the credit should stop. Watsonia outran us and just wanted to win so much more. Football will absolutely burn you if you turn up with the wrong mindset. In the context of the season and the rewards of a win, this could have been our most disappointing loss. Mouse, Kainy Proctor and big Vas, with seven goals their jobs, but it was left to way too few. One thing about this group is their resilience and pride and there will be a different effort this week. RESERVES: It’s a shame for Flaggy and the boys that do turn up week in and week out that others refuse to commit. We have the squad to have a charge at the finals but everyone has to buy in. Al Thorpe, Stevie, Tyrone and Ecca busted their gut but to no avail. We 28

Lalor as they deserved their win and we didn’t. Glofy, Brad, Cars and Oscar were among just a handful of players that gave their all. SOCIAL: Annual Players Ball at Heidelberg Golf Club - Eaglemont Room, 8 Main Road Lower Plenty, Saturday July 8 from 7:30pm. $150 per person, includes two-course meal, beer, wine, soft drink with DJ entertainment provided. Payment MUST be made prior to the night & can be done online via the web link: https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=291172 Players can put their names down for a table at the club or contact Scott Conte on 0438 505 364 or Tait Forster on 0403 685 773. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Hand written sign taped to the closed door of a women’s clothing store at Plenty Valley shopping centre last week: “If I’m not back in five minutes, just wait longer...” GO HILLERS!

just had too few fit lads on the park. Flaggy, Rick and Joshy keep up the good work and we can only hope our boys start turning up. NETBALL: A brilliant win against Northcote Park 51-28 has the Bamblett girls spruiking to me that they are third on the ladder, then Renae told me about every reason why they didn’t win, none of which were hers (such a Mckeown!) and grounded out another draw against Heidelberg, while our third side had an unfortunate loss to West Ivanhoe 39-31. Keep up the good work girls, there is a fair bit of excitement around your efforts this year. TOOL OF THE WEEK: Senior side, take a bow. SOCIAL: Tonight we host the inaugural Fitzroy Stars Ball celebrating the start of NAIDOC and celebrating the 10-year anniversary as well as the 40-year anniversary of our first flag. Many ex-players and supporters have assured a full house at San Remo. I look forward to hearing the tales of how good they all were. Great night ahead. GO STARS!

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 THOMASTOWN We headed to Diamond Creek in what proved a huge day for our seniors.

SENIORS: We turned up ready to play and were up to the challenge from the first bounce. Our pressure around the ball was really good and it was great for the boys to get reward for effort. To do it against a very good team and on a day we celebrated our 50th year as a club gave added meaning. The only dampener on the day was injuries to James Mercuri and Daniel Chadwick. We wish them all the best with their recoveries RESERVES: Despite many changes, we took the game right up to Diamond Creek in the first half. Then, in the second half, everything we did well went right out the window. Our second half was poor and we went back to bad habits, leading to a very disappointing result. Hopefully we can turn things around in the coming weeks NETBALL: Thomastown 1 were dismal against a strong North Heidelberg side. Many mistakes and disjointed play saw Thomastown go down by 10. Thomastown 2 were outplayed all game against Hurstbridge. The girls struggled to get through the tall defence line and were outplayed through the mid court, going down by 15. Thomastown 3 came back from a 6 goal trail to get over

NORTH HEIDELBERG Up to Thomastown today in what should be a good

game of footy. Post match after a few quiet ones with the Bears it’s off to the Mid-Season Ball. SENIORS: Struggled to adapt to what Lower Plenty dished up with their game plan and we were probably lucky in the end to get the points. Nevertheless we did and we are now clear on top which we will not give up lightly. Today against Thomastown who have hit some real form so they will serve it up to us, thus come prepared to play and respect the opposition and the result hopefully will take care of itself. DEVELOPMENT: Great win against the previously top Lower Plenty which is now where we find ourselves. Another test today against a side that will be hard at it so no sitting back thinking it will just happen. Plenty of players putting their hand up for senior selection so keep at it as there is much to look forward to. UNDER-19: Played the undefeated side and battled well with plenty of good passages of play with weight of numbers a key factor to the result. The young players with many not even at under-19 level have represented

the line against Greensborough by 2. Thomastown 4 were back this week, taking down Bundoora by 15. The girls took everything they learnt at training onto the court. SOCIAL NEWS: A huge congratulations and thank you to George Petsinis, Maz and everyone else involved in organizing the TFC 50 year gala dinner. All would agree that the night was a huge success and it was fantastic to blend the old with the new. Let’s hope the momentum gained from such a wonderful occasion can be utilised to embrace the challenges that still lie ahead for sporting clubs like ours. THE SHERRIFF’S DEPARTMENT: I have seen people slip on a banana peel but PK took the cake, slipping over a slice of tomato. It seems our runner Dagger believes messages can be delivered to players by taking three steps in from the boundary and then shouting it out to them. After two hours of being told what Uber was all about, Boxer was still left wondering what has happened to the old 13 CABS for a yellow. It appears most players found their way home from the 50 year gala in one piece. All except for one, who had to go home with someone else’s shoes after “misplacing” his. He will remain nameless but maybe Dom Mazza knows who I am talking about.

A PLUS LABOUR SOLUTIONS DIVISION 2 WATSONIA This week we host Lalor. SENIORS: Well that was unexpected! Wanting an improved showing against the Fitzroy Stars after putting in our worst performance of the year first time around, we came out all guns blazing with an eightgoal to two first quarter. Jezz was tearing up the wing, Nords caused havoc wherever he went and Scotty was intercepting marks left, right and centre. While we sat back and admired our own handiwork, Fitzroy piled on seven goals in the second to take the lead heading into half time. With the lively half time meeting next door firing the boys back up, we took up the running again in the third quarter. With an unlikely Saints win starting to look more probable than possible in the last, the Stars came again with a final surge but our boys held on to record a memorable win, with the margin being smaller than the font on Thommo’s state of the art plasma. RESERVES: The development squad came up against an undermanned Stars side and did what had to be done. Everyone contributed and goals were shared

LALOR This week we travel to Watsonia. SENIORS: The Lalor Bloods took on Panton Hill last week in what was always going to be a thriller. Both sides needed to win to stay alive in Division 2 next year. Panton Hill came out running and took the ascendancy early, with Lalor struggling to make any dent on the score and fumbling with the pressure as the game started to slip away. Panton Hill was leading by four goals at half time and the Bloods needed to dig deep. They did just that as the boys put on four quick goals in the third term to be within five points at the final term. The Bloods fought hard to come out winners by six points in the end with good performances by Terrance Upoko, Harley Nancarrow, Benny Curtis and Shannon Smith. RESERVES: The reserves too had a good win and are looking forward to this week with the return of some good players. TODAY: Today we take on Watsonia who had a great win against the Fitzroy Stars last week and both teams will be looking at taking another scalp today. 38

around. A mention must be made of Harley’s attempted torp after the three-quarter time siren that nearly ended up on the scout hall roof. Definitely a fine in my book. Also, we could be back to plain old Woolworths cakes, as Masterchef producers were in contact with Ocean’s missus after her caramel mud cake effort. Supoib! UNDER-19: Found South Morang’s outfit a little too strong to go down by 55 points. Keep those heads up boys. SOCIAL: Don’t forget Tom Classen day, next Sunday July 9. 50 smackeroos gets you drinks, a feed and a chance to win the $2000. Everybody say your goodbyes to the clock when you get a chance.

$5000 REVERSE DRAW: Make sure you buy a ticket in the $5000 Reverse Draw at the club in the coming weeks as this is the club’s major fundraiser. LADIES DAY: We also have the Ladies Day coming up so get behind the club and support these events. GO BLOODS!

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 - Preview BATTLE FOR THE FOUR HEATS UP Only percentage separates teams in fourth, fifth and sixth places after Round 10 action of Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3. Epping is now in fourth place on the ladder with a percentage of 124.31 – leapfrogging Heidelberg West on 118.59. Kilmore’s percentage is well behind at 90.82 The squeeze in the middle of the ladder came as sixthplaced Kilmore scored a come-from-behind upset win by eight points over Heidelberg West at Heidelberg Park. The Hawks looked to be in control until Kilmore booted the final four goals of the match to pull off a famous victory. Epping journeyed to Crispe Park to take on Reservoir and many expected a 100-point plus result. But the Mustangs were highly competitive except for a 6.6 to 0.1 second term. The Blues came away with a 71-point victory, but Reservoir fans are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. “The boys worked hard today and there is belief in the game plan,” Reservoir coach Aaron Collins said. Among the best for the Mustangs were midfielders Tom Crellin and Tom Goodwin. Reservoir now goes to its last bye before facing South Morang at Crispe Park. Banyule atoned for its Round 9 loss to Epping and immediately returned to the top of the ladder – with South Morang having the bye – following a massive 142-point win over an undermanned Mernda at R.J. Brockwell Oval. A nine-goal to two second term put the game beyond doubt and the Bears went right on with the job in the second half, kicking the final 21 goals of the match. “Fitness helped us in the end,” Banyule coach Pete Davey said. “We were able to finish off and find a way to hit up our forwards amongst extra Mernda defenders.” Kieran Malone played his best game for the year for Banyule, while Marcellin player Riley Loton contributed well. With a score similar to the Reservoir vs Epping clash, St Mary’s came away from its first trip to Laurimar Reserve with a 66-point win over the Power. The Burra had 13 goal kickers in the win, which keeps them at arm’s length from the three sides below it on

the ladder. They now lead the fifth-placed Hawks by a game and close to 50 percent in the tight race for a finals place. Lance Whitnall scored his best haul for the year with four majors and the Power fans would note the team’s improvement since the blow-out against St Mary’s at Whatmough Park earlier in the season. Round 11 action will help to shape the finals picture. South Morang comes off the bye to combat Heidelberg West at Mill Park Lakes Reserve. The Hawks have often played teams coming off the bye this season. The Lions will be favourites to win as they look to secure the double chance. Heidelberg West will need to cause an upset in order to jump back into the top-four at the end of the round. If the Hawks lose, they will slip one win behind the victor of Kilmore vs Epping. Epping will be going for three on the trot since the Queen’s Birthday weekend when it heads north to play Kilmore at J.J. Clancy Reserve. Epping may be slightly favoured to win, but Kilmore has improved immensely since last season. Kilmore has also won its past two matches and will go into the game with some momentum. The rivals’ current ladder positions is in stark contrast to the 2016 results between these teams – with Epping winning both contests by over 20 goals. In the run home, Epping plays only one match against teams currently placed in the top-three. This compares favourably to Kilmore, who plays three games against the current top-three and four such games for Heidelberg West. Banyule will be highly fancied to beat Laurimar and retain top spot. The Power makes its first trip to R.J. Brockwell Oval for the encounter. Mernda will be looking to snap a seven-game losing streak with a trip to Whatmough Park to take on St Mary’s. The last time these teams met was in Round 4 at Waterview Recreation Reserve. The Burra were down in the final term and risked beginning the season at 0-3, but managed a narrow win over the Demons. Since then, St Mary’s has risen from near the bottom to third place, while Mernda went from fourth place after Round 3 to plummet to seventh spot and three games outside the top-four. WWW. NFL. ORG. HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 BANYULE This week we host Laurimar. SENIORS: After a slow start where two and, at times, three extra defenders made clean forward entries difficult, we were able to register 22 goals after quarter time but more pleasingly, restrict our opposition to just two behinds in the second half. Looking beyond the score line, there were plenty of positives to be taken away including the addition of Mark Smith who worked nicely in tandem with Scott Gumbleton, 40+ possession games from both Kieran Malone and Dan Kelly (the former also kicking three goals) as well as terrific performances by small forwards Adam Barclay and Riley Loton who contributed seven goals between them and created many other opportunities for their teammates. A spread of 11 goal kickers showcased what was from start to finish a solid team performance and we now look forward to another big week on the track before hosting our inaugural meeting with Laurimar this weekend. Goals: A. Barclay 4, S.Gumbleton 4, R. Loton 3, K. Malone 3, M. Yarwood 2, T. Cowey 2, A. Cabdi 2, M. Italia 2, B. Nethercote, D. McDonald, J. Clark; Best: K.Malone, D.Kelly, S.Gumbleton, B.Embleton, A.Barclay, R.Loton, J.Keath, M.Smith. RESERVES: This week we hosted Mernda at home. It was a game that all the boys went into with plenty of confidence and that seemed to be the problem from the start of the game. To Mernda’s credit they were switched on from the start and had plenty of run and took the game on and really pushed us up to half time.

LAURIMAR This week we travel to Banyule. SENIORS: In Round 10 we welcomed St Mary’s to Laurimar for a return game and the chance to put up a better performance than the first time around. The boys showed spirit and discipline all day and our will to compete and do the little things saw is put up a very competitive performance that we can build on for the remainder of the season. Final score: Laurimar 7.5 (47) def by St Mary’s 16.17 (113). Goal Kickers: L. Whitnall 4, J. Gelsi, S. Toull, M. Carmichael; Best Players: L. Murphy, J. Lewis, L. Whitnall, C. Cullinan, C. Menzies, D. Humm. RESERVES: The reserves lost to St Mary’s 4.0 (24) to 15.24 (114). Goal Kickers: M. Liversidge, S. Duvnjak; Best 42

The start of the third continued the same way with Mernda doing all the attacking then all of a sudden we came to play football and looked like a finals team. W managed to kick five goals in the third and started to get on top. The fourth was a lot better with plenty of run and the game opened right up and we kicked away, kicking eight goals to one to run out with a 91-point win. Best players: Stevo, Posty, Shaun T, LJ and Glynn. UNDER-19: We looked forward to playing a top four side after the heavy loss we experienced before the bye, as it gave us a chance to prove that we aren’t going to be the easy beats of the competition. This was the first time all season we had a full bench, allowing us constant rotation and a large squad to pick from. We were once again thankful to have the help of three colts boys in the side, each of which did their job and were competitive throughout. The seniors loss was our gain, as Mikey Edwards also returned and his class was on display in patches. Best on ground was awarded to Ari, with his contested footy and ball use proving pivotal to the midfield battle. Skipper Ben Nethercote’s good run of form was rewarded by seniors coach Pete Davey, meaning Toby took the reigns as captain for the afternoon, with his no nonsense, head over the footy intensity being a highlight. We looked poised to provide one of the upsets of the season, however three second half 50m penalties against us proved to be costly, as each of which resulted in opposition goals. A hard fought contest unfortunately didn’t end up going our way, however was a vast improvement on previous weeks.

Players: C. O’Neill, J. Fitzpatrick, C. McCall, S. Duvnjak, B. Lawson. GO POWER!

HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 KILMORE We look forward to hosting Epping in what is another crucial game if we want to stay in touch with the top four.

SENIORS: We travelled to Heidelberg West, wanting to redeem ourselves from our Round 2 performance. It was a close contest all day with West in front for the majority of the day. We went into the final break five points up. West got the jump early in the last and got out to a 19-point lead at one stage. We were able to kick the last five goals of the game to get over the line by 8 points. Leigh Irons was again solid all day, Micky Marrett was huge in the last quarter when the game was there to be won, Ben Cooney slotted five goals in his return and Tom McMillan added four of his own whilst gathering plenty of ball as well. RESERVES: We travelled down to Heidelberg West on Saturday after having a considerable amount of time off due to the Queen’s Birthday break then a club bye. Feeling confident after winning our last game, we travelled with a full roster and a head of steam. Unfortunately we were met by a greatly improved

EPPING This week we are on the road to take on Kilmore SOCIAL: Our $10K Draw is coming up on Sunday July 9, tickets are now available. Tickets are $120 and cover two adults, lunch and beer wine and soft drink from 12pm to 4pm. Tickets can be purchased on Thursday nights at training or call Jackie on 0422 217 092 to arrange the purchase of a ticket. SENIORS: Not one of our best performances of the season against Reservoir, despite getting the win. RESERVES: We played an undermanned Reservoir last week. We knew they were going to come at us hard and they did. To our delight we stuck at our game plan and played the footy we know we can. We just need to do it week in week out, consistency is the key. Great games by the two little fellas. Dom after begging to be left on the ground and Ravi who had it on a string all day, not bad for an under-19. Special mentions, firstly to Ekka somewhat of a pretty boy wouldn’t have been happy with the massive falcon he copped in the third and secondly to Herbie. A veteran tall defender who let his wider and much shorter opponent take a mark 44

opposition who had bigger bodies and stronger unit structurally. We fought all day despite the large deficit in the end. KILMORE 1 NETBALL: Came up against the undefeated Heidelberg this week. The girls knew going into this match that it was going to be a tough game against the top side. The girls came away with an 8-goal win. Well done to all girls as every player stood out this week. This was a huge win for Kilmore 1 this week and as coach I could not be more proud of all girls. KILMORE 2 NETBALL: Worked hard all game and eventually broke free taking the lead in the last quarter. KILMORE 3 NETBALL: Played Heidelberg West this week. It has been great to watch so many of these girls grow throughout the season. The girls had a great third quarter scoring more goals then Heidelberg West. Unfortunately the girls lost by four. Well done girls and keep coming to training and working hard. HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 ST MARY’S This week we take on Mernda. SENIORS: Our first visit to Laurimar’s home ground was a successful one. The seniors came away with a win against a much improved Laurimar side that were particularly competitive in the second half. Our second quarter proved the best with six goals to one from the opposition. Some positive signs for us with strong performances from Myles and Cruze returning from injury or illness. Great to see Daiser in peak form and a week in Fiji has done Patti the world of good. The boys should be ready to go this week against Mernda wanting to come out strong and avenge their close defeat last time. RESERVES: The boys bounced back from their loss last week with a strong win. Despite missing both leaders from the backline they were able to keep the opposition to four goals. Great to see Potts returning from injury with a great game and Toby getting plenty of the footy even though conversion was a bit of an

MERNDA Just so everyone knows, the words you’re reading have

been very heavily considered for this week’s Murmurs.

SENIORS: Quite frankly, the downhill rate of knots from our first two wins to where we were at last Saturday has been alarming, it’s concerning, and obviously we have to do something about it. The fact is injury and suspension has affected what was already a threadbare list to pick from. But that doesn’t excuse the lack of effort from about 10 minutes in the second quarter onwards. When Blacky kicked a neat running goal, the margin was nine points. Banyule then went on to kick the last 21 goals. That’s not the Mernda way. It’s time we bounce back, and that starts with St Mary’s today. RESERVES: The reserves put in a slightly better effort, but were still largely overwhelmed in the second half. The second quarter, in particular, was really pleasing, and we went into the long break just a goal down. Our next goal came with a minute left in the last quarter. So our day was summed up by one second half goal across both sides. No need to do the math. NETBALL: At least we had teams on the right side of 46

issue. Well done also to Jonesy who just keeps on playing well and has surely put himself on the radar. UNDER-19: A good solid win by the boys against Banyule. A really good game of footy with plenty of ferocious contests and good skills on display. Limited to zero rotations from the first quarter the boys fought it out with great work around the footy from Noah and Gedgey. Great games also from Rory, Yoey and Macca was strong in defence all day. Well done to Mark – two in a row! NETBALL: Special mention to our netballers and their efforts so far throughout the season. Only St Mary’s 2 were able to score a win in last week’s games with a two-pointer against Diamond Creek. Good efforts however by 1 and 3. the ledger this weekend, with all three of our netball teams winning on Friday night. Mernda 1 was too strong for Diamond Creek, 32-21; while Mernda 2 had a bit of a tighter affair against Hurstbridge, winning 2216. Finally, Mernda 3 beat Heidelberg West, 24-11. CLUB FUNCTION: Our next function is on tonight, as we are holding an Op-Shop Night. Everyone is urged to attend and wear their best op-shop clothes! $5K DRAW: Our $5k Draw is fast approaching, with special guest comedian Sean Woodland promising a lot of laughs throughout the afternoon. HEIDELBERG GOLF CLUB DIVISION 3 SOUTH MORANG This week we return from the break to host Heidelberg West

SENIORS: Heading to St Mary’s in Round 9 was always going to be a strong task. St Mary’s kicked the first two goals and that was enough to anger the Lion. With seven consecutive goals, the boys went into half time with a commanding lead. With Raf Rachrache kicking four majors for the day and young Anthony Capeci kicking three, the likes of Tye Hall and captain Mitch Buckley striding into full gear set up the rest of the day with a convincing win away. It’s been a strong four weeks that have past, but with more to achieve. Things are certainly looking good down at the Den. Best on ground Tye Hall. RESERVES: Our reserves boys started well and were committed to the cause. Their pressure around the ball was relentless. At half time they were instructed to give one handball and kick long which proved to be fruitful. JC and Luke Inzillo both kicked four for the day. Recco and Curtly moved the ball from down back. Hien, Matty Arnold and Luke Nicol worked hard around the pack. Over all it was a good team effort. Solid win over the

HEIDELBERG WEST This week we travel to South Morang. DANGER GAME PROVES DANGEROUS: A disappointing loss on the weekend to Kilmore FC. A mounting injury toll, increased turnovers, yellow cards and an improved Kilmore outfit was the formula to see an opportunity slip through the fingers of the young Hawks. Despite leading most of day, the boys never seemed to hit top gear and missed golden opportunities to put the game beyond doubt. To Kilmore’s credit West couldn’t shake the persistent Blues. Re-committing for season 2018 sparked a welcome return to form for co-captain Justin Bentley after weeks of nagging injury he was a welcome sight. He was well supported by Mozz who kicked a seasonhigh six goals last week, playing deeper inside the 50m arc. This week we head to South Morang to try to topple the Lions on their home deck. We know if we are at our best we will be in it for a long way. SOCIAL BUTTERFLIES: Thank you to everybody that 48

top opposition. UNDER-19: We played an undermanned but very determined North Heidelberg. With conditions very greasy with the dew over the ground, the first half was a little scrappy. The game opened up more in the second half but bad kicking for goal kept the score line down, until the last quarter where we managed to run away winner by 53 points. Not taking anything away from North Heidelberg as they battled well, but the boys knew when to lift. Excellent effort guys. GO LIONS!

has attended our past two social functions, the Frat Party and Ladies Day. Thanks to Misty and Adelle for the work they put in for Ladies Day and also Shannas who assisted in decorating the rooms two Friday nights in a row (he may have found his niche). Masquerade Party next week at the Olympic Hotel. Let’s keep up the off field shenanigans. PLAYER TO WATCH: #29 Ben ‘Hodgey” Kennan has been a welcome addition to the Hawks nest. A classy defender with all the trimmings, super courageous, good ball user, leaves his man to support, directs the traffic and marshals the troops. Tipping him to sneak forward and kick a goal this week just for good measure.

NORTHPARK NFLW - Review NORTHPARK NFLW REVIEW – ROUND 9

by Jacinta Frazzetto

Round 9 of Northpark NFLW pitted finals contenders in head-to-head match-ups that proved to have a huge effect on ladder positions in both divisions. The Division 1 action commenced on Friday night, where Kew marked its name back down on the winners’ list, defeating La Trobe University 12.13 (85) to 1.4 (10) at La Trobe University Oval. Kew dominated much of the play and produced a performance that ensured it remained a game clear in fifth position. Lucy Herd was fantastic for the Bears, while Natalie Gills kicked five goals in a terrific display. Denae Clow and Tayla Dando were La Trobe’s best. On Sunday, Bendigo took away the four points in its top-of-the-table clash against the VU Western Spurs, winning 6.6 (42) to 3.4 (22). The Spurs showed they were ready for the fight against the undefeated Thunder, taking a nine-point lead into quarter time. The Thunder’s class however, shone through as they kicked five goals one thereafter to run away with the match. Leah French and Jacinta Louttit were the Thunder’s best players, while Kirralee Myers and Elizabeth Skinner delivered strong performances for the Spurs. Diamond Creek Women’s backed up its great Round 8 performance with a 13.19 (97) to 2.2 (14) win over Pascoe Vale. Diamond Creek got off to a flying start, kicking eight first-half goals to set up the victory. The win moves the Creekers into second position on the ladder, with an important clash against the third-placed VU Western Spurs ahead of them in Round 10. Natalie Bire and Alexandra Morcom were instrumental once again in the win. Darebin kept itself in finals contention with a commanding 18.19 (127) to 0.1 (1) win over Deer Park. The fast-starting Falcons took a 42-point lead into the quarter time break and carried the momentum for the rest of the match. Rachel Hibbert and Shannon Egan excelled for the Falcons, while Gabrielle Colvin finished with a game-high four goals. Teresa Cassar and Isabella Seychell tried hard all day for the Lions. Melbourne University won its fourth match in a row, defeating Whitehorse 11.8 (74) to 6.3 (39). The Colts delivered a fantastic opening quarter, kicking four goals to one as an upset beckoned. The Mugars answered the challenge however, gaining back the lead before half time and playing an excellent

second half. Rhiannon Burleigh kicked three important goals for the Mugars, while Sera Catania and Katie Shanahan stood out for the Colts. In Division 2, Kew kept its finals dream well and truly alive with a tight 3.4 (22) to 1.3 (9) win over La Trobe University. After Rachel Hickey kicked the opening goal of the match for La Trobe, the Bears clicked into action and scored the next three goals to secure a win that keeps them in touch within six points of the top-five. Natassia Williams and Justine Cain were instrumental in getting the Bears over the line, while Stefania Velona and Georga Small were La Trobe’s best. Laurimar defeated Diamond Creek Women’s 4.7 (31) to 3.1 (19) in an upset that keeps Laurimar in finals contention. Despite being held to just one goal and trailing by nine points at three-quarter time, the Power displayed gallant fighting spirit to produce a remarkable 21-point turnaround in the last quarter. Zoe Mallia was great for the Power and Ellie Koiker’s two goals were pivotal. Jodie Marsh and Linda Thorp were strong performers for the Creekers. In the match of the round, West Preston-Lakeside defeated Darebin 3.5 (23) to 2.5 (17) to secure a vital four points. With the sides sitting second and third respectively on equal points, a win meant gaining some breathing space in second position. With neither team willing to give an inch, the match was a low-scoring affair that the Roosters came out on top of. Chloe Kalanj was fantastic for the Roosters, while Chloe Oakley was important in defence. Kristin Stensholt was best for the Falcons for the secondconsecutive week and Jem Wilson was also great. In a one-sided affair, Montmorency secured its fifth win with a 16.8 (104) to 1.1 (7) victory over Whitehorse. Dominating much of the play, the Magpies’ performance ensured they remain in fifth position with a match-up against third-placed Darebin looming in Round 10. Madison Bayes was great once again with four goals and Nicole Blythe continued her terrific season for the Magpies. Kate Griffin and Madeline Theofanides stood out for the Colts. The VU Western Spurs continued their fantastic season with a 7.5 (47) to 2.1 (13) triumph over South Morang. The Spurs’ eighth win of the season saw them maintain top position by virtue of them holding of the best percentage in Division 2. Kerrie Clarke and Brittany Wunhym were excellent for the Spurs, while Cassie Hurst and Alisha Pryde continued their strong seasons for the Lions. WWW. NFL. ORG. AU

Diamond Creek in a Round 10 upset in Section 2.

The start of the Round 10 match between WP-Lakeside and Bundoora was close, with neither team able to break away from their opponent in the first term. The second quarter had the same goal-for-goal play as Comets and Lakeside took every opportunity to rebound shots and go up for goals. An intercept by GK Rebecca McDonagh gave Lakeside their edge in the game, pushing into attack and converting to take a small lead. Centre Claire De Koeyer and WA Jessica Laird feed in passes, as well as acting as options along the circle, giving shooters Jane Scheetz and Stacey Jeffery better chances to score. Lakeside’s score increased and the team worked well together, backing each other up on passes and loose balls to control the play. Defensive work by Lakeside’s Katie Power and McDonagh held off Comets shooters Emily Williams and Megan La Rocca, making it difficult to make positions to score some goals. The scoreboard read 28-19 at half time, however Bundoora came out strong in response during the third term, with defenders Loren Weekes and Rachael Furgal keeping Lakeside’s shooters at bay and pushing the ball forward to their shooters. With the score tightening to 31-25, the Comets appeared to have pushed themselves back in the game, forcing held balls and giving their attackers options to score. Lakeside lifted their play though and stopped Bundoora’s attempts to get ahead, holding the advantage as they sides went into the last quarter. With GS Scheetz on her toes for the rebound Lakeside made the opening score of the term. Comets were quick to respond with a goal and picked up a runaway pass made by Lakeside to get a second goal right after. The Comets made some good plays as they looked to continue their fightback, however Lakeside was able to steady, snatching rebounds off Bundoora shooters and making direct passes to their attackers. An injury to Bundoora centre Jacinta Tonkin saw her go off court, further denting the Comets’ hopes of a comefrom-behind win. The last minute ticked down and despite Bundoora making some late shots, Lakeside’s lead was too much to come back from. FINAL SCORE: West-Preston Lakeside 1 (52) def Bundoora 1 (42)

After trailing for the opening three quarters, the Boro fought hard to get ahead in the last term to secure the victory. A tight first quarter kept the teams close in score as both Greensborough and Diamond Creek worked tirelessly to forced turnovers, which enabled both defences to hold off the shooters and denied either side getting far ahead. The first quarter ended with just a one-goal difference, with Diamond Creek leading 7-6. In the second term the Diamond Creek girls went in with more determination and increased their advantage to six goals. Diamond Creek put in two quick goals to open the quarter as shooters Lexie Giannakos and Eloise Whitcroft worked well around the circle and used their mid-court players, centre Olivia Calerri and WA Jacqui Harrington, to pass off to and move in closer to the ring. With her side trailing 16-10, Boro’s GS Elyse Sheuermann held her body against her defender and took a well-timed catch from a lob, which she converted to goal. The Boro girls pulled themselves together and improved both in attack and defensively to cut into Diamond Creek’s advantage. The Boro’s deficit was just two goals entering the final quarter, and it was in the last that they really took charge. Despite the first goal being scored by Diamond Creek, the Boro were able score with their next move forward. Minutes later the Boro missed a shot to tie scores, but Diamond Creek GK Lynsey Barrett’s throw from the circle was intercepted, as the ball was passed to Greensborough GA Olivia Mccluskey who tied the game. A contact by Diamond Creek gave GA Mccluskey a shot to give Greensborough the lead. She missed the shot, however the rebound was tapped out by Diamond Creek, with Mccluskey able to convert second time around. Greensborough was able to hold off Diamond Creek from scoring in the final stages of the game to run out a two-goal winner. FINAL SCORE: Greensborough 2 (21) def Diamond Creek 2 (19)
