Dampier communications tower to go ahead

5

Help us keep the Pilbara tidy. Once you’ve finished enjoying your Pilbara Echo newspaper, please recycle or dispose of it thoughtfully. A little action from everyone will make the Pilbara a better place to live.

By Ben Leahy Residents fighting to have a new telecommunications tower relocated from its proposed site in Dampier will have to make do with a compromise after Council voted last week to approve the project. Residents had claimed that at a time when money is being spent to beautify Dampier, the new tower will instead act as an eyesore so close to residential houses and the approach to town along the Dampier Highway.

“Council understands that the community still has some concerns with the design but at the end of the day, Council decided it was better to accept the amended design and conditions rather than take the issue to the State Appeals Tribunal,” Mr Adams said. If Council had rejected Telstra’s amended proposals, the matter would have been moved to the State Appeals Tribunal, which would then make a binding decision.

But while residents were unsuccessful in having the tower’s proposed site relocated, telecommunications operator Telstra did agree to modify the tower to a less prominent single-pole design.

Councillors debating the issue at last week’s meeting argued that if the matter went to the tribunal, there was a significant risk that the concessions already negotiated could be overturned.

Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said the Council weighed up considerations of town beauty with the need for infrastructure to service a growing community.

“The State Appeals Tribunal does not have to take into consideration all of the negotiations that have already taken place and it is possible they would decide to go back to the very

prominent original design,” Shire CEO Adams said. “That was deemed to be a too big a risk for the Shire to take so the Council has decided to accept the monopole design.” “As the Shire grows, we are going to have to accommodate more infrastructure to service our community. “We all want better mobile phone reception and faster 4G internet and these towers are a part of that.” Earlier, Telstra technical staff had advised Council that if they were to move the tower from its central location, they would then have to build three towers to provide equivalent coverage to customers on the outskirts of town. The tower will be erected on Telstra land that has previously been used to house telecommunications infrastructure.

“As the Shire grows, we are going to have to accommodate more infrastructure to service our community.”

Should Karratha become a city or not? That is the question Shire of Roebourne staff will be putting to residents in a new telephone poll of 500 households aimed at gauging community support for the change. Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said that now Karratha had passed the city status threshold of 20,000 residents, the Shire

was setting up a City Status Advisory Group to explore a possible change. “There are certainly strong cases for and against becoming a city and I know that people in the community will have strong opinions one way or the other,” Mr Adams said. “The Advisory Group has to weigh up the benefits of becoming a city, such as a providing a stronger sense of place

and sophistication when we promote ourselves to the rest of the nation with the costs, including the financial implications of changing our name,” he said. The Shire will be running a series of pros and cons for city status in the Council pages of the Pilbara Echo and Pilbara News throughout December and January, prior to the poll taking place. “We want to make sure that all

the information is out there so we can have an informed community debate,” Mr Adams said. Residents who are not polled will get the chance to have their say in future community engagement activities. “This will give us an idea of what the community feels about becoming a city and that will inform how we go about the next phase of the consultation process,”

The Department of Local Government has confirmed it has completed a probity audit of the Shire of Ashburton after a council request. Shire of Ashburton CEO Jeff Breen has been stood down pending the findings of the audit. A spokesperson for the Department of Local Government said the Probity and Compliance Audit Report now forms part of a formal communication between Local Government Minister John Castrilli and the Shire.

EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara

President Message I am pleased to share with all that the new main road into Newman Town Centre; Iron Ore Parade; is now opened to traffic. This is a significant event for the Shire because it is a major project of the Newman Town Centre Revitalisation Plan. The new road creates a new main entrance into Newman through the southern end of Boomerang Oval and connects the intersection of Kalgan and Newman Drives. We are also thrilled with the completion of the multipurpose facility at Boomerang Sports Pavillion which is also now open for public use. Both of these projects were officially opened by the Minister for Regional Development Brendon Grylls and myself with a small fun fair for the community of Newman I would also like to remind residents about of the $1000 reward to those who provide information leading to the conviction of vandals after a series of acts of vandalism around the region. The reminder is aimed to encourage residents to help police catch vandals after a significant increase of reported damage to council property in recent months. I’m sure you agree with me that vandalism of public property is a despicable offence especially when it’s rate payer funds that are used to clean and repair damage. So please, help the Shire win the war against vandalism and keep our public facilities in clean and in excellent working order by reporting vandals to police. Lynne Craigie Shire President

Have a Go Day Newman Aquatic Centre recently hosted the ‘Have a Go Day’ swimming and lifesaving session involving a water safety. The event included an information talk followed by a practical swimming and lifesaving carnival. The carnival included obstacle swimming relays, rescue races and rope rescues. While ensuring the activities are great fun and offer new experiences for the children, they also have a serious outcome of educating children in regional areas in essential lifesaving skills that may one day save a life.

FMG and YAC dispute makes new headlines By Ben Leahy The bitter dispute between Fortescue Metals Group and members of the Yindjibarndi community hit national headlines again after lawyer Kerry Savas claimed the mining giant created the Wirlumurra Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation. Mr Savas worked for WYAC last year after being seconded by Perth law firm Corser & Corser. WYAC is made up of a group of Yindjibarndi people, who wish to accept a compensation deal offered by FMG under The Native Title Act in exchange for mining an iron ore deposit known as the Solomon hub. But in a television report on the ABC’s 7.30 Report program last Tuesday November 20, Mr Savas told the program that he believed FMG had set WYAC up so that it would have a friendly organisation to negotiate with.

Before the WYAC came into existence, FMG had been negotiating with another group called the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation. “[The] Wirlu-murra was set up by FMG in order for FMG to have a party to deal with. So, what they did is created their own [group],” Mr Savas said on the show. FMG’s director of development Peter Meurs also appeared on the 7.30 Report and denied the allegations by Mr Savas. “Fortescue definitely did not set up a rival group to YAC,” Mr Meurs said. “The Yindjibarndi people are the land owners, YAC is one organisation that represents the people. “And we were approached as Fortescue by other people in the community, particularly the women of the community, that really wanted to work with

Fortescue. “The women of the community and many of the elders approached us and said what we see is a need for a future for our families, and what Fortescue offers is jobs and opportunities for us to grow.”

First Aid Courses Public and private courses now available in: Karratha Port Hedland Newman Meekatharra Carnarvon

However, Michael Woodley, the chief executive officer of the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation, told the Pilbara Echo that Kerry Savas had nothing to gain from lying. “These people who are speaking out against [FMG] have no reason to lie,” Mr Woodley said.

Exmouth’s heliport wins national award By Ben Leahy Exmouth’s Learmonth Airport has laid claim to being regional Australia’s best heliport operator at a recent awards ceremony in Victoria. The Australian Airports Association’s National Airport Industry Awards named Learmonth Airport’s heliport operations the Regional Airport of the Year in the Awards for Excellence Category at a gala dinner on Wednesday November 14. Learmonth recently began its heliport operations to service members of the resource sector.

Exmouth Shire president Turk Shales said he was pleased that Council staff were able to step up at short notice and learn new skills to make the heliport service a success. “When the Shire took over the heliport operations last year, there were people who wondered whether this was the right decision,” Mr Shales said. “I believe that this national award proves that we can operate this facility to a very high standard and to the benefit of our community.” Andrew Forte and Jenny Kox accepted the award on behalf of Learmonth Airport staff and the Shire.

Women’s business luncheon By Tamara Binamat More than 120 Pilbara women sashayed into the Pilbara Women’s Network’s Women in Business luncheon on Tuesday for an afternoon of inspiring talks from successful business women and networking opportunities. The event features talks from keynote speaker Sandi Givens, renowned for her Life without Glass Ceilings presentation and SchellieJayne Price – Lead Lawyer for the Wheatstone LNG Project, Chevron Australia and Kylee Hodder – Operations Manager at the Bloodwood Tree Association Inc. The luncheon opened with a glass of bubbly and the chance for ladies to chat, network and mingle with other business minded locals. Rachel Whiting, manager of the Small Business Centre, West Pilbara, said the women in business luncheons are a unique chance for business minded women to hear from valued keynote speakers and to meet other women. Women, including CEOs of

large corporations, work from home mums and even whole businesses of women attended the event as a professional development opportunity. The Women in Business luncheons have come a long way since the inaugural event in June last year at which 95 women attended; four luncheons later Tuesday’s event was capped at 120 guests with a long waiting list of women hoping to fit in. Ms Whiting said the event is such a success because women need opportunities the Pilbara Women’s Network offers. “Women need it, women want it. We definitely want to maintain this level of commitment to the women in business in the region and there’s the possibility of more,” said Ms Whiting. An award-winning international speaker, author, women’s executive coach and MC, Sandi Givens delivered her highly regarded Shattering the Glass Ceilings that Limit Success presentation. Ms Givens says the session focuses on “how to get out of your own way”.

“Particularly here in Karratha in male-dominated industries, the most important glass ceilings that we have to smash are ones that are selfimposed,” said Ms Givens. “Our lack of belief in ourselves and the fact we are always nurturing others and putting ourselves last get in our way.

• Sandi Givens presenting Life Without Glass Ceilings

“I love to think that out of this room of 120 women, 120 women will walk away feeling they have found their own voice. “It is about helping women believe in themselves so they realise their opinions and ideas are valued and that we’ve go to get out of our own way. “If I can disturb their thinking enough that they say ’Right, today I draw a line in the sand and start living more of who I am, I start demonstrating my ability in this community’ then that would be a great outcome of today for me.” The event is sponsored by Chevron’s Gorgon project, RDA Pilbara, Landcorp and API West Pilbara Iron Ore Project.

Principal teacher of Ovation Performance Company, Megan Wood-Hill recently attended a 10-day intensive study period in Brisbane. Megan is halfway through a two-year course with the Royal Academy of Dance to achieve registered teacher status, a qualification that is recognised internationally. Megan attended the very physical and theoretically demanding study period alongside 12 other teachers from across Australia who are also working toward their registration. The course tutor was Lisa Clark, a very successful and accomplished ballet tutor from Canberra who has entered her students into the annual International Genèe competition, where the prerequisite is a Distinction in

the RAD Advanced 2 Exam. Many of her students have gone on to successful careers in ballet companies nationally and overseas. “Lisa’s tuition was inspiring and enlightening and the practical skills I acquired over this period were enormous,” Megan said. Megan has now successfully completed her first year of studies, receiving 99 out of 100 points for her end of year exam. “I love what I do and I am a complete perfectionist,” Megan said. “Ballet epitomises the pursuit of excellence, so it’s a good fit for me.” Together with co-teacher Leah Nagy, Megan is very excited to be presenting Ovations first performance,

Pilbara Endeavour at St Luke’s College on December 8. “This show isn’t just for parents, but anyone with an interest in dance and the performing arts,” Megan said. “Our goal is to develop a local youth performance company, something for students to strive for beyond a dance school offering.” With a bar available, supported by The Tambrey and APEX, it is set to be an entertaining night out. All proceeds from liquor sales will go toward a professionally sprung floor to be located at the St Paul’s Church Hall and available for anyone in the dance community, not just Ovation. “We believe in the health benefits of a sprung floor for all local dance students, not just our own,” Megan says.

Pilbara has award-winning plan for the future By Ben Leahy A blueprint document laying plans for future growth in the Pilbara has won an award at the recent Planning Institute of Australia’s Planning Excellence WA Awards. The award recognised the State Government’s Pilbara Planning and Infrastructure Framework document, which aims to shape development in the region over the next 25 years. Long-serving planning officers Jim and Wanda Kaucz have spent the past five years living in the Pilbara region, and are currently overseeing the implementation of the Framework. They accepted the award on behalf of the Department of Planning.

Department of Planning director general Eric Lumsden said the award was well earned because his team had created a document critical to the region’s future. “The Pilbara Framework forms the only single-source point of reference for planning and policy development in the Pilbara region,” Mr Lumsden said. The award comes as the Pilbara continues to battle a string of social and economic problems that have arisen due to the explosive and unplanned growth in mining in the region. But designers of the Pilbara Planning and Infrastructure Framework released earlier this year

are hopeful it can tackle many of these issues. It details strategies to address economic growth, environmental and heritage issues, transport, infrastructure, water resources, tourism and the emerging impacts of climate change. Creating affordable housing and access to higher standards of education, health and recreation services are another priority in the document.

Help your pet beat the heat With the Pilbara recently sweltering under 40 degrees Celsius days, it is not just humans but the region’s pets who are feeling the heat, according to vets. David Neck from the Australian Veterinary Association said pets are just as susceptible to heat-related illness as humans. “Not only can heat threats occur in parked cars, they can also happen in your own backyard,” Dr Neck said.

“Vets receive numerous calls from concerned pet owners during summer heatwaves seeing worrying signs like lethargy, excessive panting or breathing problems. “It’s important to take your pet to your local vet if they are displaying any symptoms of heat stroke.” Dr Neck said dog owners should take special note of their pets on over the Christmas holidays. Not only do temperatures around Christmas tend to be very hot, but dogs can become so excited by all the game and activities going on around them that they can their temperatures can rise even more. “It’s important around the festive season and social gatherings to give your dog time out in a cool place so they can get their body temperature down again,” Dr Neck said. “And it goes without saying that you really must never leave a pet unattended in a car, even when the weather isn’t very hot.

your dog or cat’s water bowl can help to keep their temperature down and provide some relief on a hot day.

Top ten tips to help dogs and cats beat the heat:

• If you don’t have air conditioning think about leaving a fan on during those really hot days in the height of summer.

By Ben Leahy A resident at the recently opened Karratha Seniors Village, behind Warambie Estate, has told the Pilbara Echo that she is unhappy with the service and quality of work at the new village.

Free Weekly 24 - 25 November 2012 National Lifestyle Villages strongly contest many of Ms Cory’s claims. Fellow residents Alan and Kathy Green said they are happy in the new village. “We are absolutely delighted with our new home,” Ms Green said.

Residents were last month relocated to the new village after a previous block of seniors apartments on Basset Road was knocked down to make way for a $65 million city centre revitalisation project.

The relocation of the seniors village has been a sensitive issue ever since it became clear last year that the Basset Road units would have to make way for a new main road running from the Dampier Highway to the Pelago Towers.

However, resident Kareena Cory said that when she moved into the new village 10 days ago, it was not yet completed.

At the time, hundreds of town residents came out to attend meetings to support the seniors.

She said builders had not completed parts of the concreting and landscaping or installed solar panels and a security fence at the back of the property. Ms Cory also said she was unhappy with the design of her house because it did not have wheelchair access and had a number of trip hazards. “These fences were still open to anybody and everybody [when I moved in], they only started to finish them last week,” Ms Cory said when we visited the village.

Ms Green said none of the residents wanted to leave Basset Road, but that once the decision was made, LandCorp and National Lifestyle Villages have worked closely with all residents to make the move as smooth as possible. “They have been in constant touch with us,” Ms Green said. “If we haven’t got someone from National Lifestyle then we have got someone from LandCorp ringing us, making sure everything is going well.”

“We have all been [left feeling] a bit lost [because of this move].”

Ms Green said she was consulted extensively on the design of her new home and that all her moving costs were paid for.

However, other residents, project managers LandCorp and developers

This included moving their belongings and reconnecting the power, telephone

line and an emergency alarm. However, Ms Green agrees that there have been things that needed fixing in their new home. Ms Green said she has given a list of these issues, including a request to install wheelchair access ramps, to National Lifestyle Villages. “It was minor things. We have given them a list and they are gradually getting them done,” Ms Green said. “When we first shifted in, the solar panels were put in a couple of days later, I mean, they were little things.” Ms Cory, on the other hand, remains unhappy with the speed at which the repair work is being done, and said she is so unhappy with her new home that she has asked to move to another unit in the village with a different design. LandCorp and National Lifestyle Villages have agreed to Ms Cory’s request but said it was an example of how they have had to bend over backwards to accommodate her. A spokesperson for LandCorp said Ms Cory’s original unit had been designed expressly for her with a long list of customisations she requested during the planning stage. They also promised to this week finish the concreting work near the village’s communal recreation centre, which Ms Cory had complained about.

Community Update Civil works are progressing in Bulgarra and it is anticipated that connections in Bulgarra will commence early next year. In Millars Well, contractors are connecting houses daily and recently over 300 houses were connected to the new underground network, just in time for the pending cyclone season.

Walkington Award presented to young role model

In order to prepare a house for connection to underground power, at times, a contractor may need access to a property especially if a meter box is inside the house. Residents will receive a notice advising of a time when a contractor will need access. Please note Horizon Power and its contractors will try to work with the resident at all times to minimise disruption. If the contractor specified time is not suitable, please do call the number provided to organise an alternative. Every house is required to be inspected and we thank the community for their co-operation in organising access for our contractors. For any concerns or questions about this process or any questions regarding the project, please call Community Relations Manager Monika Page on 0428 979 283. TOWN

The Pilbara Underground Power Project (PUPP) is a partnership between the Government of Western Australia (through the Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities program) and local Government Authorities, delivered by Horizon Power. The project aims to provide cyclone affected Northwest towns with a safer and more reliable power supply, replacing ageing overhead electricity infrastructure with underground networks.

Young achiever Daniel Baguley has been awarded the 2012 Walkington Award for his achievements in academic excellence and community achievements and contributions. The Walkington Award commemorates the service of the late Dr Al Walkington, Foundation Director of the Karratha College, from 1980-1983. The award aims to recognise the winner’s achievements in academic excellence and community achievements or contributions, as well as encouraging students to continue either full or part-time studies at a recognised educational institution. Daniel is considered an outstanding young member of our community, a leader amongst his peers and a role model in his school and wider community. Daniel has been a strong advocate for student interests. He has acted as school councillor since

year seven, and in 2012 Daniel took on the role of School Captain at Karratha Senior High School, voicing students’ concerns and working with the school to resolve any issues. In 2010 Daniel was awarded the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award. Daniel has also excelled outside of school, participating in soccer, cricket and tennis. In 2010 Daniel completed soccer referee training and has since officiated matches and assisted in the training of new referees. He has represented Karratha in a number of sporting activities including tennis matches in Broome and country week soccer competitions in Perth. Daniel hopes to further his academic interests in the fields of astronomy and physics at the University of Western Australia.

Second-hand computers Stay A Little for Pilbara families The Smith Family is giving away free computers in a bid to bridge the digital divide that it says exists between wealthy and disadvantaged families in the Pilbara. Not-for-profit charity, The Smith Family said a recent government report had shown that there was a growing technological gap between highand-low income groups. The report by the Australian Social Inclusion Board found that 55 per cent of financially disadvantaged families had access to a computer at home, compared with 95 per cent of higher income families. To address this, Daphne Trevurza, The Smith Family’s Pilbara team leader, said her organisation had teamed up with Royalties for Regions, to create the Tech Packs Project in which computers are being given to families in Karratha, Roebourne and Wickham. “Families can use computers for homework and keeping in touch with family members whilst improving their literacy, they shouldn’t be left behind just because they don’t have access to

a computer at home,” Ms Trevurza said. In addition to refurbished computers, the Tech Packs program will also provide families with a 12-month Internet connection and basic computer training at no cost. Ms Trevurza said the Techs Pack Program aims to improve digital literacy in the community by equipping children and their families with the technological skills that are now prerequisites for social inclusion in modern society. “[The Internet gives families the ability] to apply for jobs and log their children on to Mathletics to improve not only their digital literacy but their numeracy skills,” Ms Trevurza said. Computer training courses have already commenced for two groups, but The Smith Family is urging community members to apply now so they do not to miss out on a computer. To find out more about the Tech Packs Project or to register for a computer, contact Daphne Trevurza on 9144 1854 or Carol Warren on 9144 1854.

New dolphin calves like peas in a pod Anybody planning a trip South for rest and relaxation has extra reason after the World Heritagelisted Shark Bay recently welcomed two new dolphin arrivals. The two dolphin calves were born into the dolphin pod that regularly visits Monkey Mia Beach and interacts with tourist visitors. Wirriya (pronounced Widdee-ya) was born to Kiya early this month, while the second calf was born a week later to pod matriarch Nicky and is yet to be named. The new calf is the ninth dolphin Nicky has given birth to and will be a sibling to four-year-old Fin. Environment Minister Bill Marmion said the calves were doing well and would be monitored closely over the next six weeks

by staff from the Department of Environment and Conservation. “The Monkey Mia dolphins are of worldwide significance and it is extremely important that great care is taken to ensure the newborns are given the greatest chance of survival, as unfortunately there is a high mortality rate for calves in the wild,” Mr Marmion said. “It will be some time before the calves become accustomed to visitors being near them but there are protocols in place to protect them, and the interaction sessions will continue to allow visitors to feed the other beach dolphins. “It is a very exciting time at Monkey Mia and I encourage people to take the trip to visit this spectacular place.”

Mobile phone recycling comes to Karratha supporting the initiative. “The Memory Muster is a fantastic initiative to encourage better recycling of old mobiles reducing pollution and keeping old mobiles out of landfill,” said Gyton Grantley. MobileMuster is a free mobile phone recycling program that accepts all brands and types of mobile phones, plus their batteries, chargers and accessories. According to MobileMuster, more than 90 per cent of the materials used in mobile phones can be recycled, which helps avoid future greenhouse gas emissions, saves energy and protects and conserves our environment and natural resources. They can also contain substances that are potentially harmful to the environment if not disposed of correctly. Did you know Australia’s domestic maritime laws are changing? From 2013 the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) will become the National Regulator for domestic commercial vessel safety in Australian waters and a new National System will commence operations. For the majority of Industry it will continue to be business as usual. However, to guide people who own, operate or work on board a commercial vessel through the key requirements of the new National System, AMSA will be holding a series of community information days in capital cities and regional centres during October and November this year.

Come along and talk to AMSA and local state and territory maritime officers about the changes. Copies of the latest compact guide to the National System plus accompanying fact sheets will also be available.

Karratha residents are being urged to recycle their mobile phones and send in their top phone pictures for the chance to win a trip to Sydney. The Memory Muster promotion is part of MobileMuster, a program run by the Australian mobile phone industry, aimed at recycling the 22 million old mobiles and accessories lying around in homes and businesses. As part of Memory Muster, Karratha residents, who send in their old mobile phone, batteries and accessories for recycling before December 31, can also send in six of their favourite photographs. MobileMuster will then turn the photographs into postcards and return them to the sender. Karratha residents can also enter the online photography competition to win tickets to the gala Memory Muster event to be held in Sydney next January. Perth-based education group Scitech are conducting a series of workshops and building partnerships in the Pilbara in the hope of encouraging more young students from the region to consider careers in science. Scitech presenters and representatives from the University of Western Australia’s sister program Aspire already visit Pilbara schools twice a year to conduct fun workshops in science and technology. But in addition to school visits, Scitech is now looking for local partners to run science programs in the region, according to Kerry Mazzotti, the group’s science partnerships catalyst.

Bo Keo from Pilbara Joblink said she had spoken with Ms Mazzotti and was keen to use Scitech’s help to apply for funding for a community science project and to include a stronger science presence in next year’s Karratha Career and Try a Trade Expo. In addition to building partnerships in Karratha, Scitech also recently dropped in on Tom Price Senior High School and ran a series of exercises to help Years 8 to 10 students prepare for university by mimicking activities they might be required to do in future higher education studies. large goanna. The female corella in that cage was having a fit. And I couldn’t blame her – a bird in a cage is an easy meal for a three-foot goanna. However, once the lizard saw me, it took refuge under one of the cages. But such was the racket the birds were making that the joeys were darting every which way again and causing trouble. I knew I had to take control of the situation. I managed to lead the three hopping joeys into their run and shut the gate. Then I located the lizard and guided it around the fence line to where there is a gap big enough and wide enough for it to get out. Finally, without so much as a backward glance, it lowered itself and scraped out under the Colorbond. Then I went round to all the cages to settle everyone down by talking and scratching and rewarding them for being the best watch birds possible. Next I took some bottles to the worn out Joeys and finally harmony was restored to the yard. But, oh boy, talk about a drama to come home to.

Local wildlife carer Jennifer Fox recounts the tale of a hectic afternoon caring for her furry and feathered brood. I recently returned home from shopping one afternoon to find my husband Patrick out on the road signalling to me and pointing to the house next door. I wound the car window down and asked what he wanted. “One of the joeys is out and it’s over on next door’s lawn,” he replied. As I got out of my car, the joey skittled out from the neighbour’s yard and whizzed past in full flight. I followed and found the Joey sitting in the shade at the side of our shed. So I squatted down and talked to it for a few minutes. It was agitated and ready to take flight again. But, from past experience with escapees like this, I’ve found the best way to handle them is to get their attention by calling and walking away rather than trying to chase them. Another technique is to walk past the animal and call to it without looking directly

at it. Nine times out of 10 they follow, and you can lead them home. But once this joey started to follow, I decided I wasn’t taking any chances and grabbed him by the base of the tail. Pat was surprised to see I caught the joey so quick and even more surprised when I said I had grabbed him by the tail – I’m not renowned for my catching abilities. With years of experience playing first base and shortstop, Pat is usually the one called upon to catch animals like birds when they escape or we are trying to net sick ones. But we didn’t have long to appreciate my catching skills, because as soon as I carried the joey back into the yard, another drama broke out. It was coming from our parrots, who were all in a flap and creating a racket. The yelling, screeching and flapping intensified so much that the wild corellas in the palm trees joined in as well. It didn’t take me long to see what the commotion was about. There, standing on its hind legs against one of the cages on the lawn with its forked tongue flickering, was a very

Principal’s property update Residential real estate in Karratha is well placed for growth as the city`s population increases to keeps pace with the development of our multifaceted resource base. There exists at present a window of opportunity to take advantage of the current market conditions and find a home for yourself or perhaps add to your investment portfolio. In the past 18 months or so I have had the opportunity to both live in and work as a licensed agent in both the Hedland and Newman markets. I can say from that experience that our house prices here in Karratha are cheaper on a property for property basis than either of those other major Pilbara marketplaces. At the moment you have the opportunity to buy here in Karratha at prices that are less expensive than any of the other major Pilbara towns and will thereby benefit from the greater likelihood of strong capital growth. This opportunity will in my opinion not last for much longer. Karratha is blessed with enormous diversity within our resource base. No other centre in the Pilbara has anything like the resource diversity and attendant employment opportunities that are in abundance here in Karratha. Existing projects will continue to ramp up and new projects that are due to

Woodside to name just a few have been operating here in Karratha for decades. They continue to pour many billions of dollars in to the maintenance, construction and exploration of a vast area off-shore. All of that activity is predominantly serviced through Karratha because of the huge gas and LNG plants on the Burrup Peninsular as well as the major marine supply base there. Fertilizer, salt and bio diesel are also produced and the Burrup is soon to be home, thanks to Orica`s investment, to a new explosives factory to supply the entire North West. No other town in the Pilbara and few in the world have such a huge and diverse resource base that will attract a highly skilled operational workforce for decades to come. These new arrivals are going to be looking for quality housing so that they can raise their families and enjoy the lifestyle options, quality of life and opportunity that this area will continue to offer both now and in the future. Our quality local builders are building top quality homes engineered for this environment and designed for the local market. The homes that are produced here would not be out of place in any capital city suburb. Homes built here are using local tradesmen to build them and training local apprentices to build them in the future. I urge you to buy locally produced new homes if you are in that market safe in the knowledge that your residential investment is safe here in Karratha. So if you have been waiting for just the right time to get into the Karratha market, in my opinion that time is now! Cyclone Awarenes LIFT OUT

Cyclone preparations urged for people with chronic conditions The Western Australian Country Health Service (WACHS) is urging people with chronic illnesses and pregnant women to give some thought to how they will manage their conditions in a cyclone event. Regional Director Tina Chinery said it was important that certain groups of patients were wellprepared for cyclone season.

Jim Cahill from FESA, Peter Cameron from FESA, Andrew Burton from BoM, Graham Ezzy from BoM

Official cyclone outlook The release by BoM of the official tropical cyclone outlook for 2012-13 forecasts a likelihood of around two coastal crossings, including a significant risk of at least one severe impact during the season. Andrew Burton from the severe weather section at BoM predicts this cyclone season will see an average number of tropical cyclones develop off the coast, but where they might cross is unpredictable. “We don’t know if you’re going to cop a big hit this year, so everyone should get ready,” said Burton. An average number of cyclones off the North West coast is around five per season, usually with two impacts, one of those severe. Cyclone season is officially from November until March, with the first cyclone impact usually around Christmas time. The Pilbara falls in “cyclone alley” which BoM calls the stretch of coast between Broome and Exmouth.

“It is by far the most cyclone prone area in the Southern Hemisphere, it really is a high cyclone risk area,” said Burton. FESA Pilbara District Officer Jim Cahill said the aim of the tour was to educate people about what to expect and how to prepare for the upcoming season. Prepare your cyclone plan by educating yourself about the alert levels and maintain your emergency kit. “You need enough food and water for the number of people in the house for four days,” said Cahill. “You might be stuck in your house for four days or the power might be off for four days.” FESA recommends your emergency kit should also include a portable battery operated radio, torch, spare batteries, mobile phone and a first aid kit. Peter Cameron from FESA says every home has different risks when it comes to preparing for cyclones. “Some people own boats, some people own camper

trailers, so what were trying to tell people now is this is the time to prepare,” warned Cameron. “If you’re not using your boat over summer or you’re not using your camper trailer tie it down now so you don’t have to worry when the alerts come.” Cahill said all the advice points to planning ahead. “You can get the information from the Bureau [of Meteorology] website and from the FESA website,” said Cahill. “It’s freely available, you can look up all the brochures and they’ll tell you what you need to do.” Cameron said it’s important to get smart about cyclones. “Being smart is looking for knowledge about cyclones because you live in a cyclone prone area,” he said. ”You need to take the actions and then recover from cyclones.” After a cyclone there are recovery committees to help the community and businesses. If you’ve been impacted by a cyclone report the damage to the State Emergency Service and be wary of fallen lines and consequential weather.

Vets say prepare for bushfire, cyclone and floods over prepared,” said Dr Burleigh.

help to reduce anxiety.

“The loss of livestock, pets and wildlife last season taught us this,” he said.

“For all of these events you need to decide if you’re going to evacuate or stay at home.

The AVA is encouraging farmers and pet owners in areas that are likely to be affected to talk to their local veterinarian about how to prepare.

“If you decide to stay at home, think about confining pets to the safest enclosed room of the house such as the bathroom.

Dr Alex Burleigh from the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) says that all states and territories may well be affected by some sort of natural event over the coming months, and that people with pets, horses and livestock should be prepared.

“Your vet will be able to advise you about how to prepare an emergency kit and animal evacuation plan,” said Dr Burleigh.

“Put together an emergency kit with lots of non-perishable food (dry food) and water in spillproof containers.

“Natural events like cyclones, flooding and fires can be extremely traumatic for pets and livestock just as they are for people and planning ahead can

“It’s also important to be prepared for possible disruption of services, including power, water and phone lines for extended periods of time,” he said.

K 30

After last year’s bumper season for natural disasters, vets are warning that bushfires, cyclones and floods are likely to put many animals at risk again this summer.

“It pays to be over cautious and

“People on home oxygen, dialysis or regular medications need to ensure they have sufficient supplies for the duration of the cyclone,” she said.

Ms Chinery reminded residents that all emergency calls should be made to 000. “The message we want to send is that if you’re someone who requires regular health care, you should speak with a health professional as part of your routine cyclone preparations,” she said. “Some people own boats, some people own camper trailers, so what we’re trying to tell people now is this is the time to prepare,” warned Cameron. “If you’re not using your boat over summer or you’re not using your camper trailer tie it down now so you don’t have to worry when the alerts come.”

n za a g a v a r t x E e’s Angel of Cuisin y Christmas Giveawa 3 Week It’s on to week three of my Giveaways this week and the prizes are just getting better and better. This week all our prizes are from our friends Corey and Dan at Harvey Norman. Many weeks ago, when I decided to try and run this competition for our community, they were the first people I approached. It was thanks to their support and encouragement that I decided to continue with my idea and from there it has grown to lots of prizes from lots of businesses in town and it’s a great fun thing to be doing this time of year.

This week’s prizes

í í í Timex Lap Watch with night light, two interval timers, three alarms, training logs and water resistant to 100 metres. A great sports watch is essential to any great training program, it helps you stay motivated, keep track and really see the results you are making. Harvey Norman Computers have a new range of health and wellness products, including watches, scales and much more. Stop in and see Corey and the team and make some positive choices for your Christmas presents this year.

í í í Jamie Oliver Professional Series Frying Pan 26 centimetre. This is the brand that I choose to use myself at home. Designed for any cooktop, the hard anodized aluminum and thermo spot heat indicator makes cooking healthy food a breeze. The 26 centimetre size is perfect for families and the non-stick surface means you don’t need oil.

Our aim is to make good health simple, attainable and practical for everyone We provide the highest quality health products, services, and training, which can be tailored to meet individual, team and company needs. We have nearly 50 years combined experience delivering health and well-being services, and regularly work with: • Olympic athletes • Pro surfers, golfers and triathletes • Professional sports teams • Mining industry • ...and of course, everyday workers & families.

í í í

Tefal Actifry Plus. This is the latest in thing in the healthy cooking market and to be honest I really, really want one. In reality, it’s hard to stick to complete lean and clean eating and everyone loves hot chips. The Tefal Actifry Plus cooks 1.2 kilograms of crispy chips using only one spoon of oil, producing only 3 per cent fat. It is revolutionary in what it does and has a recipe book included. Harvey Norman Electrical has a huge range of healthy cooking products and Dan and the team will be more than happy to spend time with you helping to pick products that will suit your family and lifestyle.

Soft drinks and Children When it comes to children, soft drinks have been linked to addict-like cravings, as well as twisting kids appetites so they hunger for junk food. Researchers of a 2008 University College London’s Health Behaviour Research Centre study of 346 children aged around 11 expressed concern that soft drinks give an increased preference for sweet things and may set the children’s habits for life. A 2012 Oregon University study of 75 children aged between three and five found those given soft drinks avoided eating raw vegetables such as carrots and went for foods high in calories, such as chips. This did not happen when

the children were given water to drink. The researchers said this wasn’t about simple fussiness. Instead, our tastes for food and drink seem to be shaped in a like-with-like manner. An earlier finding, by heart experts at St George’s University of London showed that children and teenagers who consume soft drinks are far more likely to prefer foods high in salt. Dr. Hans-Peter Kubis, a biological scientist and expert in exercise nutrition says “The body absorbs liquid sugars so much faster because they are more easily taken into the stomach lining, and this rapid intake fires up the body’s pleasure responses”. “At the same time, the

brain reduces its desire for the taste of nutrients such as vitamins or minerals. “This is what makes these sugary drinks so habitforming. There is a huge overlap between what is addictive behaviour with drugs and the use of sweet food. “With children, there is more evidence of addictive behaviour,” Dr Kubis says. “You get tantrums,

restlessness and distress if you stop their soft-drink consumption.” Sarah Penrose is a Registered Homeopath with the Australian Register of Homeopaths (AROH), a member of the Australian Homeopathic Association (AHA) and the New Zealand Council of Homeopaths (NZCH). By Tamara Binamat Room 49 is 23-year-old Michael Miller on drums, 17-year-old Ben Ferguson on lead guitar and 16-year-old Connor Clynes on lead vocals and guitar.

Connor Clynes said their gig at the Youth Shed was like being thrown in the deep end as they supported their idols, former Karratha band Common Bond. “It was really an overwhelming experience due to the fact that Common Bond are quite big in Perth, but it was a really great experience,” said Connor. The boys describe their style as punk, and cover artists such as Green Day, NOFX and Blink 182.

“I do a lot of song writing by myself and I came up with a couple of riffs and got some songs down,” said Connor.

“We all want to go somewhere with our music,” said Connor.

“Thanks to [mentor] Gary Foster we’ve got one song recorded already and another can be recorded December 1.”

“We’re really thankful for all the support we’ve got from mates and people we don’t even know. “It’s been a really great experience so far and it’s only just started.

“We’ve always looked up to [Common Bond] as a band and what they’ve done in such a small time. “Playing with them was a real honour because we’re really proud of them for coming from such a regional place and making something out of their music. “We just want to do the same thing.”

A comedy for those who like football or designer dresses Managing Carmen is David Williamson’s hilarious production of manly proportions. Presented at the Black Swan State Theatre in Perth, the live show will be presented on simulcast at the Matt Dann Cultural Centre.

While the Perth audience will shell out $70, Hedland residents will get the chance to see it for free! From 6.30pm, prior to the performance and during the intermission, the Well Women’s Centre will be running a bar with all the profits going towards their organisation. Pre-show contents begins at 7.20pm with the live show starting at 7.30pm.

Managing Carmen Brent Lyall is a freakish young sporting talent. At 23-years-old the country lad is already captain of one of the most successful football clubs in the land. He is managed by the ruthless and famous sports manager Rohan Swift, a foulmouthed bully of legendary status. Not only is Brent paid a prodigious amount of money to play AFL football, he makes three times as much with product endorsements. The advertisers simply love him and his glamourous model girlfriend. But he should be raking in a lot more advertising cash – if only he wasn’t so guarded in front of every camera! Rohan is determined not to let Brent’s uptight performance get in the way of rich endorsement earnings and hires a psychologist to unleash Brent’s on-camera talent. But as Rohan finds out, Brent is not quite the simple country boy he seems; he has a secret passion for cross-dressing. Brent’s carefully managed career is in jeopardy and Rohan needs to come up with an emergency plan to keep Brent’s career and earning potential on track!

DVD review

Ted Director: Seth McFarland Starring: Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis

By Sean Smith, Karratha Ted is one naughty little teddy bear. In 1985, John Bennet (Bretton Manley), is a lonely little boy that can’t make friends easily. For Christmas he receives a teddy bear. He makes a wish upon a falling star for the teddy bear to be his best friend forever. He wakes up in the morning to find the teddy bear talking to him. Fast forward to 2012, John (Mark Wahlberg) is now 35-years-old and in a serious fouryear relationship with his girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis). Their relationship is strong, and they want to move things to the next level however, Lori grows increasingly frustrated by John’s childish antics and the fact that he is continually being swayed by Ted to go to parties and hang out with him. Ted moves out to give John space and to find his own way in the world, however, things take a turn for the worse when a weird stalker who dreamed of having Ted all to himself since being a kid, kidnaps Ted. I’ve known a few Teds in my time, most of us have. You know, the good friend that twists your arm and leads you into all sorts of strife.

Ted is a funny film; I really enjoyed it after the string of average movies I have watched over the past few weeks. I like the concept that a teddy bear comes to life and the idea that this bear is not exactly living on the straight and narrow. I couldn’t help but think that Wilfred inspired the original idea of this film. There are some similarities, however not to the point where you start to think that the movie Ted is a blatant rip off of Wilfred. The CGI is incredible in Ted, after a while you start forgetting that Ted is actually CGI. The fight scene was incredibly realistic and very well done. As my Dad used to say, “Adults are just kids with wrinkles.” His old saying rang true for me as I watched this movie. We’ve all got a Ted, albeit it’s usually what we call our subconscious mind. Up until I got married the Ted in my mind resembled Ted in the movie. He led me astray, got me drunk and got me into trouble, but he also allowed me to push the envelope in terms of squeezing the absolute most out of our youth. My Ted these days doesn’t have devil horns anymore, however he is still known to like a beer or two and he listens to Metallica.

Lighthouse centenary shines a festive light on Exmouth

By Ben Leahy

The Vlaming Head Lighthouse Centenary will feature a series of celebratory events between December 3 and 10, including the ever-popular Lighthouse Ball on Friday December 7. Ball organisers will transform Exmouth’s Shire Hall into a lavish turn-of-the-century ballroom for the event with Perth singer Libby Hammer and ensemble Hip Mo’ Toast playing swinging jazz numbers. Those residents wishing to kick-up their heels at the ball are encouraged to come dressed in their best 1912-style fashions and grab a ticket fast with most already booked out.

Australian Government to rush plans through for a series of new lighthouses – the cost of which would be footed by the Federal Government. Vlaming Head was not among those planned. But that changed when a steamship called the SS Mildura shipwrecked on the North West Cape just one night before the locations of the new lighthouses were to be announced. The tragic accident led to a frantic redrawing of plans and the adding of Vlaming Head to the list. The lighthouse was then completed in 1912 and has since perched on a hill overlooking Ningaloo Reef and the Cape Ranges, long before the town of Exmouth came into existence. Following restorations, Vlaming Head is also the only lighthouse in the world that can still be lit with kerosene.

n Vlamingh Head Lighthouse overlooks the Ningaloo coast

One of Exmouth’s leading lights will be the centre of attention next month as the town celebrates one hundred years since the Vlaming Head Lighthouse was built in 1912.

For those who miss out on the Lighthouse Ball, another highlight will be seeing the lighthouse beam its light through a 360 degree arc for the first time in 50-years. The event called Light Delights will be accompanied by an art projection show and music and story-telling performances. Other events include art exhibitions, a family campout and treasure hunt on Saturday December 8 and guided tours of the lighthouse. The weeklong celebrations are held to recognise Vlaming Head’s unique history and its popularity as a tourist destination. And yet, none of this might have ever come about had it not been for a last minute shipwreck and opportunistic State Government. The chain of events began in the early 1900s when the Federal Government announced it would take over ownership and operation of Australian lighthouses. This led the West

Paralympic champion swims with Pilbara kids By Ben Leahy With Olympic gold medalists visiting town and sweltering temperatures baking the streets, Port Hedland and Newman children flocked to their local swimming pools last week for the BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series program. As part of the program, athletes Matthew Cowdrey, Liesel Jones, Alice Mills, Thomas Whalan, Alicia McCormack and coaches Bernie Mulroy, Paul Oberman and Michael Shaw spent four days in the Pilbara running free water safety and swimming clinics. But despite being one of Australia’s most successful sportsmen in history, some Port Hedland kids were having a tough time recognising Matthew. “I am participating in Movember so I’ve got a pretty dirty moustache on at the moment, which is a bit of a disguise,” Matthew said.

Fun days a hole in one with Exmouth golfers Exmouth golfers have been practising their swings and friendly banter at a series of corporate golf fun days that are being held for the first time this year. The competition is played every week on Friday afternoons from 4.30pm, with teams made up of four people playing four holes of Ambrose golf. Once the team’s finish, a light snack is provided to everyone while they watch the sunset over Exmouth and spend some time socialising with friends. As night sets in and it’s dark enough, the nearest to the pin

competition is held with glow in the dark golf balls, which is a great way to make the most of the fun golf night. The response from the community has been fantastic with eight to 10 teams playing each evening and all participants reporting having a great time. The winners for the first four games have been the Purple People Eaters, Nuggets Delights, The Blokes & The Fat Moley Cows. With only one week to go and so many new people looking to get involved, the Exmouth Golf Club is already planning on hosting another

The redevelopment will include an upgrade of the tennis courts, formalised car parking, landscaping and a large new clubhouse to cater for up to 250 patrons. Also presented in the tender will be options to upgrade one of the bowling greens, install playground facilities and change the surface of the tennis courts to acrylic. the proposed redevelopment works should email Julie Rouse, Infrastructure Administration Officer at the Town of Port Hedland (iao@porthedland. wa.gov.au) to request the Tender Documents.

six weeks of corporate golf at the commencement of the 2013 season. Next year’s season is planned to run from Friday April 5 to Friday May 10 2013. So get a team together next year and join in the fun. Ambrose golf is a form of the game where all team members hit their golf ball from the tee, but then change so that they all play their next shots from the location of the team member who hit the best shot. They then continue in this fashion, playing from the location of the best shot until they finish the hole.

Brad Hogg and the Scorchers spin into town By Ben Leahy The Perth Scorchers T20 cricket team might have recently had a tough time at the Champions League in South Africa, but last week they were back among adoring fans in the Pilbara. Children from Port Hedland, St Cecilia’s, Cassia and South Hedland primary schools mobbed the Scorchers players at a series of cricket clinics across town. Australian cricketer Brad Hogg said he and Scorchers teammates Michael Beer, Adam Voges, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Tim Morrison were rapt to see how excited the Hedland kids were about cricket. “The idea of the trip is to promote cricket as another sport for them to play,” Brad said. “And we are getting a good reception, and they are right into the Scorchers so it has been fantastic.” Cricket is riding a wave of fresh interest with the big money Indian Premier League

and the launch last summer of Australia’s popular Big Bash T20 tournament and Brad hopes it translates into more kids playing the game. “The talent around Port Hedland is amazing. “Cricket is a good option to pursue because it is an enjoyable career, you get to travel the world doing something you love. “Obviously, the Big Bash has created a lot of interest. “The game is a lot shorter and it is on when the kids are home at night – it is usually sharp and interesting. “I remember when I was young, I used to watch the tests, but after a few hours I wanted to be out in the backyard playing myself. “But the main thing is that the kids are participating. “You don’t want to see the kids watching it and then not going and participating.

Exmouth Auskickers to play on the big stage Young Exmouth Australian Rules footballers will be playing in the big league next year after 80 local Auskickers were given the opportunity to play at half-time during next year’s West Coast Eagles versus Fremantle Dockers AFL game.

“The whole idea is for kids to be active.” As well as visiting Hedland schools, the Scorchers also visited two Atlas Iron mine sites to meet the workers and to promote Movember male health issues. “I think the biggest thing with people like myself being at the age of 41 is that you go get regular check-ups,” Brad said. “If something does happen, whether it is prostrate cancer or anything else, it can sometimes creep up on you and you don’t realise until it is too late.”

season even started. He also said he was unlikely to earn a surprise call up to the Australian team as he did at the last T20 World Cup. “I think the World T20 was probably my last hit for Australia,” Brad said with a laugh. “I think they are going in a new direction to make sure they blood younger players. “I’ve had a wonderful career, and I was

And who will win the test series

“It was a great laugh and we just mingled with the workers and played a bit of backyard cricket outside on the tennis court.” As for the Scorchers this year, Brad said they will have to rejig their plans after losing their two biggest signings, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Marsh, before the

Our Golden Oldies are back! By Tamara Binamat Golden Oldies from all over the world descended on Fukuoka, Japan for the latest instalment of the world-wide Golden Oldies Rugby match. Every two years there is a world cup for players over 35-years-old. The match is played somewhere different in the world every time, originating in New Zealand. Clarke Harris from Dampier has played at the Golden Oldies for nearly eight years since he joined while living in Sydney, and when he moved to Dampier he carried on the tradition. There are teams all over the world, including a few in Australia, and even one in Port Hedland called the Galloping Goannas. Clarke stills sticks with his original team, the Penrith Legless Emus. The matches are a bit of fun for the old blokes, one of Clarke’s teammates is over 70-years-old! There are different coloured shorts for different players. For example, if you see a bloke wearing purple coloured shorts it means he’s pretty

experienced in life so you’re not allowed to tackle him, but he can tackle you! “Those blokes just run!” said Clarke. “I think there’s a bloke about 80 or 90-yearsold who plays. “They’re all the purple shorts. They can tackle you, but you can’t touch them. “We run along side them then just fall over in front of them or something … It’s just a fun day. “One of the teams from Japan, one of their blokes was in a wheelchair. “They gave him the ball and two blokes pushed his chair along. ”Well, the other team were falling over all over the place in front of him until he got right to the end!” There were about 151 teams this year, from Russia, New Zealand and America, to name a few. There are no winners at the end, presumably because making it through the event is winning already. “It is a fun contest, you get to hang out together as a team and travel the world.” All photos by Tracey Heimberger
