Foreword

Welcome to the

Thai-Sweden Review Message by Kenneth Radencrantz President Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce

Year 2010 continues at a rapid pace and in a month’s time we will see the arrival of a new year. As we are all born optimists, we naturally hope that year 2011 will become a prosperous and a most successful new year. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but I think that we all feel that we have now left the financial world crisis behind us. At least there are clear indications that Thai export-import trade and overall business is expanding, which we all hope to benefit from. The TSCC is active on many levels. Basically we promote the development of Swedish business in Thailand and, as a partner, directly or indirectly contribute to the economic advancement of Thailand. You, as a member, probably notice only 10% of the work that the Chamber is doing, though we are really committed to modernizing our communication channels. Business information is vital and a priority. Our website has been improved considerably and now contains continually up-dated business information and links to other vital sources. Internally we have issued working guidelines for the board, chamber director and staff. We have reviewed financial policies and procedures. Every month we now get a Financial Report with budget comparisons and the board meets more frequently than ever before. Most important, however, is that the board has decided to refer major issues to board committees, chaired by board members. Thereby we hope to engage all board members and get all committee work independently done in a fast and professional way, only for the board to finally resolve. We also work together with 29 other chambers in the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce (JFCCT), where we actively contribute to the progress of the organization. It is a long-term, even tedious, work but JFCCT has attained the respect and recognition of the Thai government. The deciding body of JFCCT is the Presidents’ Council. A lot of work is done in a number of Committees, all manned by specialists in their own field. The Property Committee is governed by our own chamber and chaired by Khun Patima Jeerapaet, one of our board members. One day you may find that the Thai government has issued a new legislation concerning a matter that is important to you. You may be surprised to find that the new legislation is in your favour. Send a thought of gratitude to those, who have voluntary worked for years on your behalf, influenced the government and together with them have found a solution that will benefit not only you and many others but also the country of Thailand.

Royal Thai Visit to Sweden in 1960

Royal Thai Visit to

Sweden in 1960 Their Majesties King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit of Thailand visited Sweden 50 years ago in September 1960. The visit was of great importance to the relationship between Sweden and Thailand.

I

n 2010 it is exactly half a century ago since the current reigning Majesties of Thailand, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, visited Sweden. Back in September 1960, the Royal Thai couple went to Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Sweden had not been visited by a Thai royalty for almost 50 years before Their Majesties King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit paid this visit. The visit was an important milestone in the modern history of relations between Thailand and Sweden. Later, Swedish representatives visited Thailand on numerous occasions, and it made the bonds between the nations even closer and warmer. Following the visit, Thailand in 1963 appointed an Ambassador of Thailand in Stockholm. Later on, in February 1965, Prince Bertil, representing the King of Sweden, visited the Royal family in Thailand. Sweden’s relationship with Thailand’s Royalty reaches back to 1887 when His Majesty King Chulalongkorn visited Sweden. The next Royal visit was in 1911 when His Royal Highness Crown Prince Chakrabong visited Sweden. The next visit was King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit’s visit in 1960.

Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden, at the time not yet acceded to the throne, has since spoken of the huge excitement that surrounded the Thai Royal visit to Swedish and the Swedish people’s warm welcome of the Thai regents. Especially the beauty and elegance of Queen Sirikit, who came from a exotic far away country that not too many people knew anything about at the time gave, became the talk of the town. His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf has also often later referred to the impact of the Royal Thai visit to Sweden in 1960. In his official speech at the State Banquet during His and Her Majesty Queen Silvia’s State Visit to Thailand on 23 February 2003, His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf spoke about the earliest Thai Royal visit to Sweden by King Chulalongkorn in 1897. He continued: “Your Majesties have confirmed the will to continue and strengthen the contacts. You paid an appreciated State Visit to my Grandfather King Gustaf VI Adolf in September 1960. The attention You later showed through the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn at His funeral some ten years later was received with big gratefulness by our family.”

In Stockholm 1960

In September 1960, Their Majesties King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX, and Queen Sirikit paid an unforgettable three-day State Visit to Stockholm. Hosted by the late His Majesty King Gustaf VI Adolf and Her Majesty Queen Louise, the Thai Royal couple were greeted by tens of thousands of well-wishers who lined the streets of Stockholm. It was an occasion that remains vivid in the memories of many Swedes today. The young Queen Sirikit charmed Royals and commoners alike with her refined Thai grace, while King Bhumibol was admired for his enquiring mind, similar to that of King Gustaf VI Adolf, as both monarchs sought ever greater knowledge for the well-being of their people. In all, the Royal Thai visit gave a foretaste of the Thailand that is now fully embraced by Swedish travellers and investors. www.swecham.com

On 20-21 August the inaugural Thailand Festival 2010 was arranged in Kungsträdgården, Stockholm’s most well known park, and with the best possible outcome: 80,000 visitors over two days. By Joakim Persson

T

he festival, which was a cooperation between the Royal Thai Embassy in Stockholm, Team Thailand in Sweden (Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Airways International, Board of Investment, Department of Export Promotion) and the local Thai community was held during a weekend to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the State Visit to Sweden by Their Majesties King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit in 1960 as well as to further promote Thailand in various areas such as culture, tourism, trade and investment. The Festival also aimed to regain confidence from foreigners including tourists, businessmen and investors to return to Thailand. The decision to expand the commemoration into a historical, cultural

and touristic event was also proven to be right since the festival attracted an unexpectedly large number of visitors and resulted in positive feedback from the Thai community, Swedish residents and foreign tourists. Based on the huge success the intention is to hold a sequel in 2011. After the very positive feedback and requests that the Embassy received from the Thai community and the Swedish public, the Thai Ambassador H.E. Mr. Thanarat Thanaputt has decided to organize the Festival again next year, provided that a budget will be allocated. The Ambassador wants to make this Festival an annual event in Stockholm’s calendar, reports Naruchai Ninnad, First Secretary at the Royal Thai Embassy. During the Opening Ceremony which was attended by honourable guests from various sectors in Sweden, the

Ambassador of Thailand to Sweden in his opening remarks highlighted the existing close ties between Thailand and Sweden at all levels and hoped that the event would further strengthen the relations at the people-to-people level. At the same time, Ms. Kersti Py Börjeson, First Deputy Chairman of Stockholm City Council, praised the Festival and believed that it would further promote Thailand to the Swedish people. The Ambassador also touched upon the return to a peaceful situation in Thailand after the recent social unrest. He reiterated the Government’s continuing policy of ensuring the safety of foreign nationals in Thailand and the country still being a safe place for tourists and businessmen. Moreover he highlighted that figures had shown that the number of Swedish tourists to Thailand weren’t affected by the political situation, meaning that they still have confidence in Thailand. The Festival featured an Exhibition to commemorate the State Visit to Sweden by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand displaying photos and captions of Their Majesties historical trip, the long-established relations between Thailand and Sweden - especially the close ties between the two Royal Families - and Their Majesties’ life-long devotion and hard work for the wellbeing of the Thai people through Royal Projects.

The Mae Fah Luang Foundation which promotes rural development activities through royal projects had also been flown in, which received much attention. Besides carrying out many projects which benefits underprivileged people, MFLF also produces many wellknown products; especially coffee and macadamia nuts. Visitors could taste their products and get samples. Also information were given to consumers wishing to buy the Mae Fah Luang products in the future. Visitors also enjoyed various cultural performances from both Thailand (a traditional dance troupe from Kalasin

province) and the Thai community in Sweden (including a local band playing various Thai music and songs), a colourful parade of Thai traditional costumes through the streets of Stockholm, Thai food-tasting etc. The Ministry of Culture sent demonstrations of Thai arts and handicrafts. Mr. Balloonman and Jo-Na puppetry from Thailand were also invited. The local Thai community was also involved on a voluntary basis and Thai restaurants, spas, shops and travel agents also joined the festival as exhibitors to add more “Thai-ness” to the event.

Kenneth Radencrantz, the new president of Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce, is about to change the way the Chamber operates. First of all, the new President will ensure that the Board gets real influence on how the Chamber is managed even down to the day-to-day business. The Board must be more than just a rubber stamp, he says. By Bjarne Wildau

I

t was clear for the new President of Thai - Swedish Chamber of Commerce when he was elected in March that the whole situation within the Swedish organization called for much more “Hands On” involvement from the Board and members and lesser dependency of the employed staff. “Slowly but surely the Board got less and less involved in the daily life of the organization they were elected to lead. Something had to be done,” says Kenneth Radencrantz who is now half way into the term of his election as the new President of Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce. “At my age I could have carried on with my company and the beautiful life we have here in Sukhumvit Soi 10. But to say ‘No’ to the 120 members, who saw the election of me as the President as a way to get the Chamber back on track, was not an option. I felt that I had to do it,” Kenneth Radencrantz says. But the Swedish businessman who started as a consultant for Q-Matic when it had a turnover of 5.0 mio. Swedish Kronor, and left it as a CEO when it had 50 times this turnover, had his conditions before he accepted the honor. “I would not do it alone. And for sure I would not just become a rubber stamp for the daily management of our organization. As I saw it, the board had to get much more involved, and we had to let several committees take responsibility for running our organization,” he says. And that is what the new President has done. Previously, the Board of the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce had four meetings per year. Now they have doubled that number to eight. On top of that, a written monthly report is prepared concerning the current standings at the organisation. Some of the other challenges Kenneth Radencrantz is coping with is the organization’s magazine “Thai Sweden Review,” the homepage, and not to forget the Best Practices Guidelines booklet.

A monthly newsletter would be beneficial for every one. Every time we have done something, our members ought to know about it.

The latter will be re-launched in a new set up. “We will make it a much more attractive magazine, with more articles and more pictures, and its important that we have our minds on the readers. Thousands of Swedes invest in new homes or a second home in Thailand. Some of those are not that confident with the English language, so we have to bring some article in Swedish,” Kenneth Radencrantz says. The President also feels a need and a chance to widen up the issues in Best Practices. “Many of our countrymen and women here in Thailand play golf, go fishing or what ever. If that is good activities for our readers, we have to tell about that kind of activities as well. Returning to the Thai- Swedish Chamber of Commerce again, Kenneth Radencrantz talks a lot about serving the members, doing thing they can benefit from directly. “A monthly newsletter would be beneficial for every one. Every time we have done something, our members ought to know about it.” At this time in the interview which takes place in the President’s residential apartment in Sukhumvit Soi 10, he touches upon one of the problems regarding the Board and the members’ possibilities to engage themselves in the daily business of the chamber.

16

www.swecham.com

“Active business people are already away from home far too often. I believe that I my self am out every second evening. So we have to ensure that all gatherings we organize are quality time, benefiting the members and the Chamber.” In a direct reference to that issue, the President comments on SSS, Scandinavian Society of Siam. “It is very sad to see how this organization is struggling to keep its members and attract new members. It’s obvious to me, that SSS has to approach their members in a new and more embracing manner. The time for huge and expensive events could be over, at least they are of much lesser importance,” Kenneth Radencrantz says. The experienced businessman, who thought he was going to retire more than ten years a go is not so old that he cannot put himself in the shoes of the younger generations for a moment. “Where are the activities for the younger people, what about the young families?” he questions. “I am sure that the members will support and even enjoy taking part in events where the whole family, included the children can participate.” Kenneth Radencrantz points on a positive note to what he calls “the only activity that works properly within SSS at the moment” - the SSS golf section. “The golf section is so popular

because the members love golf, the game, the social activities surrounding the game with the small white ball. But what happens if you go to the SSS homepage to find something about the golf section? You cannot! It’s a great shame that the only well functioning thing within SSS is actually outside the organization.” Then Kenneth Radencrantz turns his thoughts to a Swedish organization which has made one “Hole in one” after the other. “Take the Swedish association (Svenskföreningen) in Hua Hin. The number of members are increasing on a monthly basis, and they hardly have space for all the people who want to attend their meetings. Why?” the president asks. And he comes up with the answer himself: “They touch people’s daily need for information, support and social activities. I am sure most of the various associations who work for Swedish people abroad could learn a lot from our friends in Hua Hin.” Kenneth Radencrantz came to Thailand ten years ago on a three month mission. But instead of just collect a debt for the Swedish company Q-Matic he had just retired from, he ended up starting his own company in a new country. Goodbye to retirement.

Christopher Stafford – the Anantara and Elephant Polo Man

Well travelled, highly experienced hotelier within Thailand hotel industry and the brain behind the Elephant Polo yearly competition in Thailand By Joakim Persson

18

Christopher Stafford the Anantara Elephant Polo Man

I

t is no understatement to say that hotelier Christopher Stafford has played an instrumental role within the Thai hospitality brand Anantara, and thus one of the most successful Swede within the hospitality industry in Asia. When highlighting his achievements, and learning more about his story so far, we find that Christopher has accumulated 25 years of experience within global hospitality and travel. And he turns out be an insightful person with lots of thoughts and strong ideas for the future. History says that Thai people would leave a jar of water outside their house to provide refreshment and extend a welcome to the passing traveller. An ancient Sanskrit word that means ‘without end’ symbolises this sharing of water: Anantara.

Today this word is also synonymous with one of Thailand’s most well-known hotel brands, with heartfelt hospitality at the core of its experience. In the year 2000, along with two other persons from the advertising industry, CEO Bill Heineke [Minor Group] and the Swedish-American Christopher Stafford conjured up this brand name. “With its meaning it was a brand you could bring out in the Asian region. Water has always been of importance in these countries, and that connection enabled us to expand to other places. It turned out we were completely right for once,” Christopher says with a smile. He came to play a major role in building the brand as the one who opened no less than the first seven Anantara resorts. Strongly connected to Anantara is also the elephant polo; today a well-

known tourist event, which Christopher also initiated and is still supporting as President of the Thai Elephant Polo Association. And he would probably still be leading the brand’s operations, were it not for the fact that he got tired of opening up resorts one after another. “We had opened 7 properties when Bill asked me to open another one. Then I declined,” smiles Christopher. To open another one he thought would not be fun. “Anantara had become a large corporation and then it was time for me to leave,” says the former Vice President. Now he helps out on a consultancy basis instead and is working on his own new hotel brand concept Eco Chiic hotel and an amenity company which is involved in design consultancy, eco product design and eco audits for hotels and service establishments. He also runs the company Classic Events which continues supporting the Kings Cup Elephant Polo tournament. For a quick retrospect on Christopher and how he ended up in Asia, Africa was the start of a long journey. He grew up learning Swedish in Ethiopia and Zambia (his mother is Swedish and his father worked for the UN). Christopher then attended a hotel school on Hawaii and the family eventually moved to live in Malaysia in 1969.

www.swecham.com

19

Christopher Stafford – the Anantara and Elephant Polo Man

His hotel career, though, actually started in Sweden and Norway before moving on to Sydney, Australia. He moved up the ladder to get his first GM position in Tahiti in 1985. Later on in 1990 he took his first job outside hospitality by setting up and running the first ever sound engineering school in Singapore – The School of Audio Engineering and the first such school in Kuala Lumpur. “I then decided to go back to the hotel industry. After a stint with Mandarin Oriental group in Singapore I was asked to help expanding the Harry’s Bar franchise there, so we started Harrys F&B International which was turned into a huge success between 1995 and 1998.” Then Christopher moved on to start Raffles Town Club in Singapore. And in year 2000 it was time to come back to the hotel industry for real; time for Anantara. “It worked very well; Hua Hin opened in 2001 followed by the Golden Triangle in 2003 which I opened with another Swedish colleague, Björn Richardsson. Then down to Koh Samui in 2004, and Maldives came up with a joint venture. This was the first time taking the brand outside Thailand which was an interesting task, where we built three hotels on three islands, one fivestar, Naladhu and then Dhigu and Veli.” “Anantara was very special in the beginning; the idea was that it would be a Pan-Asian brand and we tried to incorporate the Maldivian touches. What I have always felt is that they don’t incorporate the local culture enough, actually, and all things become very Thai style everywhere. Naladhu was an

20

www.swecham.com

attempt to do something completely different, sort of Tommy Bahama style, more colonial.” Doing things for local society permeates his vision of what a hotel is about. Christopher wanted to accomplish more than just running the hotels at Anantara where his stint in the Maldives is a perfect example. “I wanted to build a Dhoni museum. So I started and asked afterwards.” Dhoni is the traditional means of transportation of the Maldives. “If there’s anything they can do better than anyone else, it is building hand-made boats. So we started building many Dhonis, and we thought we should have a museum for such boats out on Anantara. The whole idea was to show how they do it, since it’s all done

by hand. At that time, at least it was my vision – and how elephants also came into the picture – a hotel with a social conscience should be able to do such things.” The whole initiative was stopped but the resort owns some lovely Dhonis as a result. And the elephant polo is still very much part of the brand. “It gets a lot of local support. And when it did not take place in Hua Hin for four years they complained. So now when we are coming back [in 2011] they are very happy, since something will happen again. And that’s the thing, it is important for a society to have such things.” In Chiang Rai Anantara incorporated an elephant school with the resort. There guests learn how to ride an elephant while at the same time contributing to a charity which helps buying stray elephants. “Today they have 38 elephants. And they bring the whole family, so the mahout owner and his wife etc. come to live in the village and occupy themselves with a small industry. And the elephants have a much better life in the camp. It was pure luck that we got the government to join.” Thanks to this initiative and that the authorities knew that Anantara had the right approach, the elephant polo sport also got the thumbs up. Christopher, who has been riding horses all his life and played polo in Singapore, got the idea of elephant polo from the owner of Qbar in Bangkok, Mr David Jacobson, inspired from Nepal. And like a bolt from the blue Christopher immediately could see an inner image of the form.

22

www.swecham.com

TSCC - Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce

“It was instantly evident to me exactly how it should be. And that’s the most strange which has ever happened to me. So I drew it on a board immediately.” “The owner was very sceptical though supportive in the end. Nowadays it’s the opposite; they can’t wait for the next one. And ten years has passed with it. So now it is just like that this must take place every year and be grander every year.” It attracts distinguished guests with a common interest in gathering and having a jolly good time whilst contributing to the well being of society. Christopher has found out that the elephants love being together and playing elephant polo, on top of getting their best pay check of the year. It is within running specific events such as this, but also eco-friendly products and services and a more sustainable hotel industry that he is putting his efforts into. “We are researching for a new brand right now called Eco City. This would be a boutique hotel built with sustainable materials etc.; a bit similar to Six Senses but also fun. And it should be an affordable city hotel and have friendly rooms and trendy things in line with today. It should be a real environmental programme in the hotel, for example really having a forest where the trees are being planted. And like having an ice bar as entertainment in the middle of Bangkok, while having a menu with an organic food menu etc. So it’s really about doing things that can be helpful, thinking of sourcing locally.” Thus, his dream brand is in the making which will combine sustainable thinking with entertainment.

“Most hotels have become totally boring,” thinks Christopher. As for sustainability and social

responsibility the hotelier thinks the hospitality industry over all leaves much to be desired. “They all have their small programmes but it’s more what I call lip service. They don’t really give much, and it’s the same when it comes to ecology.” Location-wise he has plans for Sri Lanka, “the most interesting destination for the hotel industry ahead”, where he already bought some land. “Sri Lanka has culture, the best beaches in Asia, good English language skills and they are coming out of a long period of war and are now wellpositioned. All my clients are there buying land and starting up.” Looking into the crystal ball we might well see Christopher as the creator of a new brand in a year from now, he discloses.

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Bangkok is an English-language university which carries out high level education and research. All the photos from the campus are by Jennifer Liljenvald Tydén, Högskolan i Borås

M

ost people probably don’t know that Sweden plays a leading role in such a successful project in South East Asia or that a university can act as a peacemaker, says Sten Dellby, Director of Communications at the University of Borås who recently visited the Asian Institute of Technology. Since 2005, Professor Said Irandoust, former President of the University of Borås, has been the President of AIT. “Said Irandoust has carried out extensive negotiations in order to reach an agreement between the countries that supports AIT,” says Sten Dellby. At a formal ceremony in August, ambassadors from twelve countries, including Sweden, signed a treaty which officially gives AIT intergovernmental organisation status. Later this year more countries are expected to sign up.

At present, diplomatic relations between two of the countries in the region, Thailand and Cambodia, are strained and both countries’ ambassadors have been withdrawn. But Cambodia’s Chargé d'affaires was present at the ceremony in Bangkok and signed the treaty on behalf of his country, says Sten Dellby, who thinks that AIT is an excellent example of how higher education can unite countries. AIT offers mainly Masters and PhD programmes which focus on technology and sustainable development. Just as important is AIT’s role as a forum for international dialogue and as a breeding ground for future leaders in this part of the world. At AIT, students from countries such as Burma, India, Nepal and China are together in the same classroom and both North and South Koreans participate in AIT activities.

In addition to the Asian students, there are visiting students from the US and other Western countries at AIT. The University of Borås is planning on sending a whole class of international business engineering students, all in all 30 students, to AIT during the spring of 2011. Swedish students need to learn how to conduct business in this part of the world, Sten Dellby points out. AIT was founded in 1959 as a graduate school by SEATO, thought to become an equivalent to NATO in South East Asia. However, later AIT became independent of SEATO and has mainly been funded by contributions from Europe and other Western countries such as Australia, Japan, and Canada. There is also a strong support from the Thai government. Sweden is, via its International Development Cooperation Agency, SIDA, one of the largest donors. “That a university becomes an intergovernmental organisation is in itself quite unique, not to mention the fact that it is located at the centre of international politics,” says Sten Dellby. “It is positive that Sweden gets to play such an important role in this context.”

his is just one example of many different interactions with guests and his staff that the Swede at the helm of Rembrandt Hotels & Towers has during a typical day at work – a day that rarely lasts less than 14 hours for this devoted General Manager who sees the staff as his extended family. With 30 years’ experience of hospitality in Thailand Eric was understandably found to be the right man for the job when Rembrandt was looking to replace its first long-lasting GM. Eric was actually already in Europe then, assigned to open Six Senses’ first ever resort there. But destiny had other plans for his next challenge within the life-long endeavour within hospitality. Before returning to Bangkok to be at the helm of Rembrandt, Eric had a long stint with Six Senses, including some wonderful years at their Koh Samuibased ‘intelligent luxury’ property. “I have beautiful memories from Samui and all the hotels I have worked at. I’m still very much a ‘Six Senses’ person because that’s also how I was before I joined them; many of their values correspond with my own. Meaning how you manage staff, how to look after the environment and run social responsibility programmes and how to host guests etc. At Six Senses I had to do things in the way I want to, so it’s still something I am very found of.”

Wherever I Lay My Hat…

“I feel comfortable in all kinds of hotels; beach or in the mountains. I enjoyed the Maldives too. I have no problem to work anywhere but I feel at home in Thailand.

My home for the soul is Chiang Mai.” “At my former hotel the room prices were ten times higher or more, so it’s an entirely different clientele we target here. But for me it’s irrelevant whether it’s three, four or five stars. I enjoy hotels, and all of them have different challenges.” “As a child I grew up moving around so in principal where I open my suitcase I feel at home.”

At Rembrandt he had the challenge of taking over a hotel after someone who had run it for 15 years. “All general managers have slightly different ideas how things should be done etc. And we have changed many things since I came here; renovated all rooms, upgraded the entrance, built a new spa and fitness centre and other refurbishment. I belong to the modern school, meaning that if you’re F&B for instance you are responsible, but I act as support for all departments, representing the goals and functioning as the catalyst for change but doing it in consultation. We come to decisions in unison, so it’s a different approach.” But I am gradually changing the uniforms here too to more colourful, relaxed ones. And I am trying to upgrade all IT, and we are replacing several systems in order to become much more energy-efficient.” “It’s very grateful to work with hotels in Thailand since its people are fantastic to have in this industry. But there is no unison concept; each hotel requires special treatment. So I don’t have a fixed formula. If you take over after somebody else you have a culture there, and you

I am gradually changing the uniforms here to be more colourful and relaxed. cannot just change it. One must study it and see what’s specifically good with it, try to find the hotel’s soul, keep what’s good and enhance it.” “What I think has big importance within our industry is that it’s peopledriven, and one rather works with people one knows can deliver satisfaction to the end customer.”

On the Swedish Connection

This is the first hotel I have been at which has a large Scandinavian clientele, thanks partly to that we have had SAS cabin crews staying here during many years, and we also have many other Swedish companies that have come to use this hotel. So it’s been a long time since I spoke so much Scandinavian! I always wear Three Crowns cuff links and Swedish shirts. And I travel to Sweden up to four times per year to visit my elderly parents and to attend travel trade shows. Now I am looking at doing an exhibition with Orrefors glass. Then we’ll try to do it in Swedish style.

On his dedication as hotelier “There are many hotel managers leaving work at 6 pm and having a normal family life. Then there are the other crazy ones like me who sees it both as hobby and job. For me it’s great fun doing it. I don’t see it as a must.” “Sometimes it can be frustrating for my family because for me the hotel and its staff and guests are like a family too. But my wife is very supportive. Sometimes it becomes too much, though, and then she demands my time. But it’s not exactly any normal life, no.”

On the Bangkok hotel boom and tourism “There will easily be around 150 000 hotel rooms by 2010, so it’s an incredible increase. It seems as if there is no political will to limit the number of

30

www.swecham.com

hotels. The going says: ‘I also want a hotel’. The best thing with that is that the salaries in the industry go up – I think there will be less staff in each hotel, but with better salaries, so in a way that’s not too bad.” “Prices will also be kept down, for good and bad. Possibly Bangkok will become more attractive, though the Thai baht has appreciated against most currencies. I think the Baht will fall longterm. And hotel prices are low already, comparing with almost any other city in Asia. I’d say we still give very good value for money.” The huge selection of hotels can in itself also drive a larger number of visitors, thinks Eric. “But you get certain cannibalism if you have ten hotels of the same brand in one city, and three different categories.” “Location is very interesting to look at - and management. Some just work with calculations and spread sheets and it all looks good on paper, but do not know much about the business. And many will loose at lot of money while others will get stronger,” Eric predicts. During difficult times, such as recently in Bangkok Eric also thinks it is important to keep the business running and care for one’s staff. “I had to ask the owners for quite a lot of money to keep the business running and defended that by highlighting the need to keep our

policy. I think the pressure on the staff increases so one should be fair with them. And I think it’s very important to take good care of them - as long as you see the light at the end of the tunnel and that these troubles come in cycles and things bounce back again.

Putting the view of Thailand into perspective

Having seen crises come and go Eric has a slightly different take on Thailand’s recent political turmoil: “Thailand, and previously Siam, has under its existence often had political and other problems but it always solved them somehow. Sometimes it looks really ugly but at the last minute somehow they have a guardian angel watching over them. Always in the end things get resolved, ‘cause they always find a path forward. It’s a fantastic people and history shows it survives somehow, so I’m very optimistic.” “Thailand has during the last 30 years I’ve lived here experienced 150 years of development including an industrial and technological revolution. The country has gone from purely agricultural to an industrial nation during a very short time span, so certain things simply don’t catch up. And all countries, including Sweden, have experienced this, but there it took place during a period of 100+ years, while here at rocket speed.”

Bangkok is associated with both positive and negative things these days, and yet a draw for visitors from the world over and for foreigners wanting to come and live in. By Joakim Persson

I

n fact Bangkok was voted by readers of Travel&Leisure Magazine this year as the top city in the world, followed by Chiang Mai (though based on a survey completed before the most recent social unrest)! Bangkok is associated with both positive and negative things these days, but continuously allures visitors from around the world. In fact Bangkok was voted top city in the world, followed by Chiang Mai, by readers of Travel&Leisure Magazine this year. (Though based on a survey completed before the social unrest in April and May). Among those unconditionally agreeing with the survey result is Björn Richardsson, General Manager at two Oakwood properties on Soi 18 and 24 in Sukhumvit. Actually Björn prefers Thailand as a whole over anything else, well, apart from his family that is.

Asked to name three favourite things about the country he replies: “Everything, if I have to chose only one.” When being asked to be more specific he adds. “I’m married with Noi, from Prae, and have two children – that is what I appreciate the most. But basically... there’s nothing I need that I cannot have here.” More than ever before this became clear to Björn when he moved to work in Malaysia. “After I spent one year there I realised how much Thailand means to me, and I returned in a hurry,” he says.

The hotel alternative

When Oakwood wanted to hire Björn back in 2006, their Bangkok property near Rama 3 was the second largest serviced apartments complex in the world. “That gave me a new spark in my

career. Serviced apartments is like taking the best parts of working in hotels, plus you have more time for the guests. You’re more of a host there,” he says. And Björn Richardsson truly knows which service areas to focus on. Something he picked up through many years of experience in various hotels and destinations throughout Thailand, to which he arrived in the early 90’s, in time realising that the serviced apartments were the way to go. “In Bangkok there is a large market and demand since people have learned that it is a very good alternative to hotels. I think it has to do with the fact that Bangkok as a city has developed immensely. For instance, fifteen years ago you would go to a hotel for socialising and dinner. But today you have good restaurants on every second corner,” says Björn.

www.swecham.com

33

SUKHUMVIT Soi 18: Oakwood Trilliant generally has larger apartments and more 1 and 2 bedroom units,” Björn says. Each unit has a fully equipped kitchen which is a main difference from hotels and yet the room rates are very competitive. “That’s a very strong selling point for us. Guests coming as hotel guests and who check into a serviced apartment for the first time are generally very pleasantly surprised,” says the General Manager. According to Björn, the newest property, Oakwood Apartments Trilliant in Sukhumvit, is set to excel. “We offer superb service and have everything guests expect from an Oakwood, and it’s brand new. The location is brilliant: Soi 18 is very cosy with no traffic and with everything close by – but not too close to disturb,” he ensures. And the guests seem to agree. “Many guests who have booked for a month or so come to me and say: ‘This was very good, we’d like to stay on,’ and extend their contracts,” Björn says.

Scandinavian confidence

Broad targeting

Serviced apartments traditionally cater for monthly and yearly guests, but most also have a hotel license in order to cater to daily guests as well. So, at the new Oakwood Apartments Trilliant on Sukhumvit Soi 18 he is also welcoming quite a few short-term guests. “The Oakwood Apartments brand is targeting the younger customer base, mainly single business travellers, and hence the apartment mix consists of more studio apartments. The Oakwood Residence brand which targets families

34

www.swecham.com

Personally Björn Richardsson is disappointed by the way international media presented the April-May crisis in Thailand. “It was evident that the violence was limited to certain areas and also not targeting any foreigners,” he says. “I believe that overall the reports in foreign media were too sensational. However we did see many regular guests, some even contacted us directly asking about the situation, who decided to go ahead with their travel plans, which is a testament to the safe reputation Thailand enjoys abroad,” he continues. Luckily for the Swede, the serviced apartments sector did not really take a beat as the hotels did. For that, Björn could thank the long term residents. “When things like that happen, there is obviously an effect in occupancy, mainly in the transient segments. Fortunately, guests staying on a monthly or yearly basis don’t move out instantly, so during that period we enjoyed better occupancy than many hotels,” he states. The biggest confidence Björn Richardsson has in his fellow Scandinavians. “For the Scandinavian market, I think Thailand is just as strong as, or maybe even stronger than it has ever been. I think Scandinavians know that it is safe here and they feel at home. Hopefully Thailand will continue to be their number one travel destination for many years to come,” he says.

Scandinavian deli and restaurant has opened up in Bangkok with a delivery service covering all of Thailand and, possibly, also the neighbouring countries as well. Four Swedes and one Thai investor will in November this year open Scandinavian Deli Ltd. after several years of wheeling and dealing to get all the permissions in place. Thai-Sweden Review has interviewed the “Public Face” of the Deli, Gunnar Sjobeck, who is one of the five investors. “It’s so obvious that there is a market for Scandinavian products, and it’s been a long time since we started talking about the need of a Scandinavian deli in Bangkok. But we wanted to be sure that we did it the right way. Better late, than doing it quickly without a proper lease on a proper location,” says Gunnar Sjobeck.

Finally in March this year, Gunnar and the co-investors found what they were looking for. A spot in Soi 18, just beside the Swedish Managed Rembrandt Hotel Bangkok, only seven minutes walk from Bangkok’s MRT subway and BTS sky train. The final negotiations were done in April, and the key was handed over. Since then at least seven millon Baht has been invested in rebuilding the property. “Everything is perfect now. The kitchen for instance is just beautiful, all clean, new, and practical,” Gunnar Sjobeck says.

The right location

The biggest hurdle in the project has been finding a proper location. Without convenient parking facilities and a natural flow of costumers there is no reason to waste investments, creativity, and time. “In our search for at proper lease facility we simply walked up and down the Sois in the west end of Sukhumvit. It was some project, I can tell you!” Gunnar Sjobeck smiles.

SUKHUMVIT Soi 18: Scandinavian Deli

It’s been a long time since we started talking about the need of a Scandinavian deli in Bangkok. But we wanted to be sure that we did it the right way. A fantastic selection

So what will you be able to find at Scandinavian deli? Everything. What ever you can think of in Swedish or other Scandinavian foods, it will be there. From Kalles kaviar, over goat cheese to Danish salami. “We have done almost everything we could think of to make this deli a success,” says Gunnar. “The preparations include a costumer survey. More than 600 hundred people have filled out forms about what they would buy if it was made available to them. I would say we are prepared,” says Gunnar Sjobeck with a hint of pride in his voice. He is confident the shop will be a winner, making colleagues jealous and its costumers happy. And the restaurant in front of the deli shop will be as efficient and cozy as planned.

Doorstep delivery

Another side of the new business that the Swedes see as promising and important, is the delivery service to Scandinavians and other customers outside Bangkok. “More and more Scandinavians settle for shorter or longer periods in the Hua Hin area. We have already had several request from there and other areas as well, despite the fact that we haven’t opened yet,” Gunnar says.

38

www.swecham.com

He talks about the possibility of delivering goods with a company owned van. Maybe even with a mobile deli shop. If the demand is there, a van will visit the greater Pattaya and Hua Hin / Cha-am and Prachuabkhirikhan. The rest of Thailand will be taken care of by express delivery.

The Deli’s specialities

“Scandinavian Deli will also be the place where you can buy freshly baked bread delivered by a baker educated in Denmark and Switzerland. He will be able to deliver what ever sort of bread our costumers may demand,” Gunnar Sjobeck says.

“The same will be the case with different types of sausages made in Bangkok but definitely within the range of Scandinavian expectations.” Gunnar Sjobeck’s own role in the Scandinavian Deli is linked to his successful Tasty Thai franchise chain of restaurants. “People know me from Tasty Thai. That’s where I and most of my professional life belongs. But I made an investment in Scandinavian Deli and I’m very happy about that. Right now I’m impatiently anticipating the opening,” says Gunnar Sjobeck with a broad smile.

ts right there smack on the beach. The Swedish “Huay Yang Sanuk School” will open here on 10 January in a dream location that fully matches the location of its sister school on the beach in Koh Lanta. “The school will open here in our former beach restaurant, Sea Breeze,” explains Mrs. Ann-Christine – or ‘Anki’ - Leidstedt, the Sales Manager at Nishaville Resort and Spa. Then she pushes the door open to what will be the school yard in front of the building and the sun streams into the classroom and the rolling waves glitter in the background. The view is truly stunning. “For safety reasons, we will build a fence around the school yard, though,” Anki explains. “It’s not safe if the children are able to run down and play in the waves when the teacher turns her back. We will also change the brick floor to be a smooth concrete floor so the children will not fall and hurt themselves,” she adds. “Just because we are in Thailand, we don’t forget Swedish safety precautions – especially not when we are talking about our children!” The Headmaster of Huay Yang Sanuk School will be Eva Brandelius. She will be backed up by Mrs. Camila Lebert Hirvi, the founder of Lanta Sanuk School, the first Swedish school in Thailand which opened in 2004, who has more experience than any other person in Thailand in this field. Apart from setting up the Lanta Sanuk School, Camilla Lebert is also involved in Danish school that has been established the same place. The other partners in the school are first of all Khun Supakorn Kijkanakorn, the owner of the whole Nishaville area where the school is located, and Khun Panadda Hongsakul of the Australian International School of Bangkok. “Initially, the school in Huay Yang will open for a single term ending on 1 April 2011, but the goal is for the school to be open all year round in a few years,” Camilla Lebert explains. ”The purpose of the school is that the Swedish and Norwegian families can take a ”Thaim-out”, a break from their everyday lives and spend some time abroad with their children,” she adds.

New Swedish School in Huay Yang

”Our students should reach at least the same goals in our school as they do at home, while getting great experiences and new experiences to take home. Many students are even ahead of their peers in Scandinavia, all because of the small classes with only 10-12 students in each class and the fact that there are only experienced and qualified teachers working in both Sanuk schools,” Camilia says. On the website, the ideological foundation of the school is explained further: ”The school’s motto is diversity - in an increasingly globalized world, an openness to different perspectives. We want to contribute to the realization that there are multiple truths, depending on the culture, perspective and situation.

42

www.swecham.com

TSCC - Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce Huay Yang Sanuk School’s vision is to contribute to an increased inter-cultural respect and understanding and thus a more peaceful world,” it says. The school is open to preschool children 3-6 years and students in grades 1-9. ”We attach great importance to all students knowing each other. Every morning, we will gather all the teachers and children in a single morning assembly where everyone sees all and we do various team-building exercises, morning exercise, yoga or other exercises together,” Camilla explains. Like the Lanta school, Huay Yang Sanuk School is for the whole Swedish community in the many Swedish settlements in the area south of Prachuab Khiri Khan – not only for Nishaville residents.

“Some residents asked if the school will be only for the Nishaville residents. But of course it is not like that. Although we at Nishaville provide the facilities, this school is for the whole community here!” Anki Leidstedt explains. “This is so typical for the way our owner, Khun Supakorn ‘Goff’ Kijkanakorn thinks. He wants to see the whole village and the whole area prosper,” she adds. Today, many outside residents already enjoy the hospitality of Nishaville, especially the restaurant inside Nishaville, which has moved to a new building, sees a lot of customers from outside for lunch or dinner. And soon a new Cafe pavilion will open next to it. See also: www.svenskaskolanthailand.se

The Nishaville villas feature large outdoor terraces ideal for an open, outdoor lifestyle. Inside, the houses are functional and based on Swedish quality solutions throughout.

St. Andrews International School, Sukhumvit 107 is getting bigger. This year, the school has a new Secondary Building, new soccer field, basketball court…and a new nursery teacher: Swedish Ann-Marie Goverde.

A

nn-Marie Goverde kneels down in the nursery section of St. Andrews School. The toddlers around her have just finished singing “Twinkle, Twinkle” and now it is time to go home. The children all amble up to their teacher and give her a nonchalant hug before they go home. It is a little thing, but for Swedish Ann-Marie, who recently started as nursery teacher at the school, it represents the core in the values she wants to teach them: The children should feel safe and secure in their home away from home. Numbers in nursery are kept low to make sure there is a lot of time for each child to feel valued and nurtured. “I really enjoy the international school work”, she says of her new job. “The teachers are very involved and they have much to give to the children.“ Ann-Marie Goverde moved to Bangkok from an international school in Hanoi in August. But back in Sweden, the 54-year-old mother of five was in various positions within the Swedish school system. For 30 years.

“I feel like I should have done this a long time ago. When I was at the interview for the position, I felt something just clicked – the opportunity to be able to play a lot with the children and let them explore that way is very similar to the Swedish way of thinking. I like the atmosphere here at St. Andrews 107 a lot,” the experienced Swede says.

Growing with the students

The nursery section of St. Andrews Sukhumvit 107 is where it all began. It was built in 2004 and over the years, St. Andrews has expanded to fit the needs of the ever growing student body. Today, there are 105 students - from the toddler group in the nursery section to the teens in Year 10. In October, the school opened up a whole new building with a library, secondary classrooms and science lab, drama/ music room, art room, food technology and language classrooms. The building overlooks the brand new soccer field and covered basketball court. “We are very proud of our new facilities which will benefit all the students in the school. Students here love learning and the extensive new amenities together with the installation of the integrated IT systems will further enable our students to thrive and achieve their very best,” said Head of School Julie Way. Already, outside next to the school’s grassy school yard, a couple of girls in school uniforms are shooting hoops at the basket court. Quite a few of them land in the basket.

International environment

The student body comprises of part expatriates and part internationally orientated Thai families, so as is natural for a school like St. Andrews, students come and go. However, there is a majority of long term families and the philosophy behind recruiting is very clear – the school is a place to where each student has a sense of belonging and the teachers of St. Andrews Sukhumvit 107 guide the children to be creative, independent, life long learners. In the nursery, where Ann-Marie Goverde and two teaching assistants work, they have a special toddler programme for the pre-nursery children. This is part of the British Curriculum for Early Years. Twice a week, the toddlers (and their parents or nanny) come in to play for an afternoon. They are just at the stage to develop communication, language and social skills. The children are given a wide range of multi-sensory activities to enjoy and explore. “Some of them have never felt sand or grass, but for me it is natural, that they get messy, explore and play here, Ann-Marie Goverde says. The children from last year’s toddler group have joined the school this year and so it is the hope, the new ones will as well. If they do, the now expanded St. Andrews Sukhumvit 107 is ready for them - although it might take a couple of years, before they are ready to play basketball.

A Decade among scandinavians

A Decade Among Scandinavians For nine years, Vipaluck ‘Mam’ Chomchuenjit has been the assistant of Executive Director John Svengren at the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce. Everyone knows her because she handles pretty much every assignment there, but who is she really? By Katrine Sigvardt

A

nswering phone calls, organizing dinner and breakfasts, recruiting new members, coordinating events, translating, and a bit of accounting – these are just a few of the things that Vipaluck Chomchuenjit, or Mam as she prefers to be called, takes care of at the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce. Officially, her professional title is “secretary” but on a daily basis, her business tasks go far beyond that. She is the coordinator, assistant, and right hand of John Svengren – in short, Mam is the woman who keeps the Chamber running. Having worked with Scandinavians for almost a quarter of her life, Mam has taken a liking to Scandinavian culture and especially the Swedish royal family.

The beginning

It was actually by chance that Mam practically became part of the inventory at the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce. Having worked in different places for no more than two years at a time, Mam came straight from Phuket to her job at the Chamber. With her degree in hotel operation, she has been helping her cousin set up a hotel business in Phuket, but even though she has a university degree in that business, she actually does not like working in hotels. “It is strange but I don’t actually like it. I am not that comfortable working in that environment and with so many people all the time.” Therefore, when her friend, the previous secretary at the Chamber, recommended her as her replacement, she quickly accepted.

According to Mam that was one of the best decisions she ever made, and that is why, after nine years, she is still there.

Everyday is different

Although most of her work is very much dominated by routine, there are also often fun and odd jobs that might not fall under her job description. One of the things that happens and shakes things up a bit is when the Swedish King and Queen pay a visit to Thailand. It is always stressful to prepare for a Royal visit, which is all up to Mam, but she loves it and feels like it is all worth the effort when the royal family gets here and enjoys itself. “Usually, they are only here for about one or two days but I always have to start planning everything about three months in advance.” The Scandinavian environment has rubbed off on her and Mam has developed an interest in the Swedish Royals. She reads all the interviews with them in the paper and during one of their many visits to Thailand, she was lucky enough to meet and shake hands with King Carl XVI Gustaf himself, who, according to Mam is a very kind and warm person. Her work and the odd jobs that need to be taken care of are not always as pleasant as a royal visit, though, and for months in the spring, a huge part of Mam’s time at the office was spent on the Red Shirts and the issues their activities in central Bangkok raised. As the gravity of the situation increased and demonstrations escalated, she got more and more busy. She hopes there will not be a repeat of this next year.

A Decade among scandinavians

My job is to know stuff, so when people ask, I immediately have to give them an answer. Scandinavian interest

Despite having worked for the Chamber for the past nine years and having developed an interest in Scandinavian lifestyle, she has never been to Sweden. “I have never been. I can’t believe it!” she says and adds with a chuckle that she hopes she will get a chance to go there soon. She has a very clear idea of where the people she works with on a daily basis come from but she would love to see for herself and with her own eyes what Sweden is really like. And going to Sweden is at the top of her wish list. She really wants to, because she enjoys the company of Scandinavians and she likes the way they do business. “I don’t think I could work well under a Thai boss again,” Mam says and shakes her head to underline her point. She has gotten used to the casual relationship that exists between employer and employees, which is very characteristic for the Scandinavian business culture. And this is exactly the kind of relationship she has with her boss, John Svengren at the Chamber.

48

www.swecham.com

“There are just the two of us here at the office. We know each other so well after all these years and we are open and have developed mutual respect for one another.”

A Swedish preference

Most of all, Mam enjoys the Scandinavian approach to business because it allows her to focus on her job as she is not disturbed bye her boss who wants her to run personal errands for him and take care of his personal business as she has experienced in the past with Thai superiors. The fact that the Swedes do not beat around the bush and get straight to the point if there is a problem also suits her very well and she much prefers that to keeping one’s emotions hidden in order not to offend anyone. “If there is a problem, we talk about it, and that’s it. The end is the end,” she says with an approving nod. Mam feels both very happy and very lucky to be working at the Swedish Chamber of Commerce and she feels certain that that is why nine years have

just flown by without her really noticing it. “I just take it one year at a time,” she says as she looks forward to her 10 year anniversary. “I would like to work here for as long as I possibly can.” Her job gives her a great opportunity to improve her already perfect English and although she realizes that some people might consider it boring, one of her favourite parts of her job is the routine it has become over the years. “I have been here so long that I can do my job with my eyes closed. My job is to know stuff, so when people ask, I immediately have to give them an answer. I have the experience now and that’s why I like it,” she says. “I am not like a young person who needs action all the time. I am very comfortable with the stability I have here. That’s enough for me.” Mam is the glue that is holding the Thai-Swedish Chamber together. She is the one working behind the scenes, pulling all the strings, and making sure everything happens according to schedule.
