philatelic news The Rolling Stones : Royal Mail 2022 LONDON, Jan 11 (Reuters) - The Rolling Stones are being honoured on new British stamps, with a dedicated set featuring their performances worldwide as the legendary rock band marks their 60th anniversary this year. Royal Mail said on Tuesday it will issue a special set of 12 stamps “as a tribute to one of the most enduring rock groups of all time”. Eight stamps feature pictures of lead singer Mick Jagger, guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood and late drummer Charlie Watts performing at different concerts around the world: from London’s Hyde Park in July 1969 to East Rutherford, New Jersey in August 2019. The other four stamps are presented in a miniature sheet and feature two images of the band all together, and two of posters for their global tours. Watts died last year, aged 80. “Few bands in the history of rock have managed to carve out a career as rich and expansive as that of the Rolling Stones,” David Gold, Director of Public Affairs

& Policy at Royal Mail, said in a statement. “They have created some of modern music’s most iconic and inspirational albums, with ground-breaking live performances to match.”Formed in 1962, the Rolling Stones are one of the world’s most successful and long-lived rock bands, selling an estimated more than 240 million records worldwide and picking up numerous awards, including three Grammys, along the way. Their Stones’ oeuvre, rooted in American blues and rhythm and blues, has yielded hits like “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Sympathy for the Devil” from their peak 1960s and 70s era but also curios like the reggae-infused track “Send It To Me”, apparently about a lonely man looking for a mail-order bride. They are the fourth music group to have a dedicated Royal Mail stamp issue, following in the footsteps of The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Queen. While Novak Djokovic is not currently feeling the love in Australia, he recently became the first named athlete from Serbia to be featured on a Serbian stamp. “It is an honour to receive my very own Serbian stamp. Thank you to my generous country for this rare gift! I’m humbled!!” Djokovic tweeted. “Excited to share we’ll partner with the Serbian National Postal Service on Novak Djokovic Foundation projects for every child to have the opportunity to attend preschool.” The artwork, references some of Djokovic’s greatest accomplishments, including his 37 ATP Masters 1000 titles and 20 major triumphs. The general manager of the Post of Serbia, said “it is an honour to dedicate a stamp to Serbia’s “best athlete of all time”. “The Post, as a national institution, in this way made an appropriate homage and a sign of gratitude from the people of Serbia to Novak Djokovic, for his sport achievements, and everything he is doing for the well-being of the citizens of our country and its reputation in the world with his public and humanitarian work.”

If you’ve been to a post office in Broken Hill over the past six decades chances are you’ve come across Keith Austin, the man residents affectionately call “Stamper”. Mr Austin, who started work with the post office as a 16-year-old, said he was sad to be retiring from work. “After all these years more or less my life will be out of my circle. My circle was: home, post office, club,” he said. “I thought the time has come. Time to let someone else have a go.” Mr Austin started out as junior postal officer in 1956 at the city’s South office and over the course of six to seven years became a postman and then transferred to the Central office as a postal assistant. “Then about 1962-63 I seconded to Papua New Guinea for two years posting telegraphs,” he said. “I came back and transferred back to the Broken Hill post office ... and then took over the North post

office and then I moved up to the current address in McCulloch Street in 1983.” When he first started he was using pen and pencil and later transitioned to push-button technology. Mr Austin said keeping on top of technology had been key. Mr Austin said parts of the job had gone by the wayside. “Lots of telegrams, especially on weekends,” he said. “Everyone used to send a telegram for a wedding in those days. It’s all done electronically now.” As for his nickname, he said it came about from a need to press stamps properly. “You’ve got to get a good impression on the letters so they know when it was posted and the date,” he said. “I might’ve been a bit enthusiastic with my stamping but that’s what it was.” Australia Post network manager said Mr Austin’s personality had been particularly noteworthy during his time at the local offices. “His local customers absolutely adore Keith,” he said. “He loved meeting people, he loved talking to people and that showed in the respect that the community has for him.”

Judges in the United Kingdom have been advised to refer to postal workers as “postal operatives” instead of postmen in a bid for the court system to move towards inclusive, gender-neutral language. The Equal Treatment Bench Book, which guides judges to ensure victims, witnesses and defendants are fairly treated and was revised most recently this month by the Judicial College, says job titles where a gender is implied should be avoided. This includes terms such as postman, air hostess, businessman and chairman. Instead, judges have been urged to use titles such as “postal operatives” or “flight attendants” if they are
discussing a worker regardless of gender. These suggestions come as part of the “acceptable terminology” section of the guide, which is an apparent effort to cease judges inadvertently offending members of the public in a hearing.

Note : Thanks to Stampboards member The Pom for forwarding this article Sherlock Holmes might have balked, but the Royal Mail detectives came up trumps when they correctly delivered a letter with an address that was more like an episode of This Is Your Life than a conventional street name and postcode. Writing on Twitter, the County Antrim musician Feargal Lynn said the postal system deserved “hearty applause” for successfully delivering the letter addressed by following a brief history of his family in the area. Describing his parents and the “Spar his ma and da used to own”, the description of Lynn also included his later move to the nearby Waterfoot and the fact he is “friends with the fella [who] runs the butchers” in the neighbouring village. Lynn said he laughed for about 10 minutes when he first saw the letter and that the description on the front brought back “so many memories from my

The full description on the envelope reads: “Lives across the road from the Spar, his ma and da used to own it, his mother was Mary and da Joseph, moved to Waterfoot after he got married, plays guitar and used to run discos in the parochial hall and the hotel in the 80s. Friends with the fella who runs the butchers in Waterfoot too.” It is not the first time the Royal Mail has defied expectations in deciphering addresses that could, at best, be described as vague. Last year, Catrina Davies, who lives in a shed in Cornwall, was handed a letter in an envelope omitting a town, street name or postcode. The sender had simply addressed it to Katrina Davis [sic], noting that she lived in a shed “near a village 21 miles from Land’s End, as featured on BBC2 Simon Reeve Cornwall programme”. In 2010, a postie rose to the challenge when they were asked to find a couple with an address given as “somewhere near the golf course in Thetford, Norfolk”. But perhaps the most impressive feat was the delivering of a Christmas card to Paul Biggs in Longlevens, Gloucestershire, in 2015 – sent from Germany in an envelope simply marked “England”.

Swiss forensic geneticists have analyzed DNA recovered from postage stamps dating back to World War I to solve a century-old Austrian paternity puzzle. IN 1885, Xaver, a young Austrian blacksmith, left home to make it big. After finding a new job abroad, Xaver, a gentile, fell in love with Dina, the 17-yearold Catholic-Jewish daughter of his boss. He was subsequently fired. But that was just the beginning of this family drama. Dina ran away from home to be with Xaver and found lodging and work in the home of Ron, a 30-year-old Jewish factory owner. In 1887, she gave birth to a son, named Renc, believed to be fathered by Ron. Renc received Jewish rituals and was baptized in a Catholic church. But Dina and Xaver remained together and married in 1889. Xaver acknowledged the then one-anda-half-year-old Renc as his stepson, and Ron lent

support to the family. Xaver and Dina went on to have three more children, including a son named Arles. During World War II, Renc’s full Jewish ancestry was kept a secret, while he and his relations lived in fear of being deported to the concentration camps. The secret of his paternity was maintained publicly for years, but among the family the true identity of Renc’s father was passed down from generation to generation. Fast forward to May 2017, when Cordula Haas, a forensic geneticist at the University of Zurich, was approached with an unusual request. Renc and Arles’ descendants wanted to verify that Ron was indeed Renc’s true father. The family offered up cheek swabs from descendants of Dina, Renc, and Arles for DNA analysis, and some postcards that had been sent by Renc, Arles and Ron that might hold their DNA in the remnants of the saliva used to paste the stamps. The scientists compared the DNA found under these cards’ stamps with the DNA found on postcards sent by Renc while he was fighting in World War I. They found common Y chromosomal lineage, which meant that the two brothers shared the same father. After more than a century, the family had an
end to their paternity drama: Xaver, not Ron, was Renc’s father. Haas said the family was surprised by their findings but were ultimately glad to know. She laments that nobody knew of Renc’s true ancestry while he lived under the Nazi regime. “At that time,” she says, “it would have made their life easier.”

A family in Florida says it got a surprise post-Christmas delivery in the form of two packages left at their doorstep by a U.S. Postal Service carrier. What made it truly unexpected: The packages were postmarked in 1971 and were addressed to a previous owner of their home. Adding to the bizarre tale: When the family opened the packages, they found the shipment contained psychedelic-inspired posters — very much in the popular style of a half-century ago — promoting cocktails made with Southern Comfort, the sweet, fruity-tasting spirit. The family members told media that the whole scenario was almost like stepping into a time warp. “I thought, ‘Well, something’s not right here,’” said Paul Russo. An explanation as to what likely transpired eventually emerged: It turns out the packages weren’t sitting in a post-office facility for 50 years. Instead, they were in the possession of John Feigert whose family previously lived in the Florida home. John’s father, Paul Feigert, was the original recipient of the packages, though he has since passed away. John gave the posters, still in their original tube-style packaging with the old family address in Florida, to his daughter, Jessie Feigert, then forgot about them completely. In turn, Jessie recently sold the posters on eBay EBAY and bundled them together inside new packaging. John believes the tubes containing the posters must have fallen out of the new package, ending up in the mail again and getting Stamp News - 15

A USPS spokesman said that older items are sometimes purchased at flea markets, antique shops or online and then re-entered into the postal system. The Russo family says they made the discovery of the packages on Sunday, Dec. 26 — and confirmed via their doorbell camera that a postal-service employee dropped them off that day. The Russos decided to track down the Feigerts and tell them about the packages. John realized they were something he passed on to his daughter. “I have given her a ton of stuff from my father.” The posters have some value as a collectible and can be found on auction sites. One is currently listed on eBay for $99.95, with the sellers describing it as being in the style of Peter Max, the famed pop artist who became popular in the ‘60s.

At this time of the year when more letters are getting sent, it is easy for scammers to lure unsuspecting customers in with the promise of cheaper than usual stamps. Citing a proliferation of counterfeit stamps being offered on the internet, the United States Postal Inspection Service issued a warning Dec. 17, 2021, to avoid what it calls “phony postage” schemes. Its news release stated: “Is a substantial discount of up to 50 percent off an order of U.S. Forever Stamps too good to pass up?” “If so, keep scrolling, they’re probably counterfeit.” “The number of counterfeit stamps being sold from online platforms has escalated.” “The tell-tale sign of fraud is the deep discount” Anywhere from 20 percent to 50 percent off is typically being offered for bulk sales of nondenominated (58¢) forever stamps. 16 - Stamp News
The warning comes as an increasing number of news outlets are reporting sales of counterfeit stamps. The current price of a first-class forever stamp is 58 cents. However, some Facebook ads have been advertising the ‘Black Friday Facebook’ discount which was offering 100 stamps for just $39.90 a markdown of 31% on the true cost of a stamp. Postal inspectors at USPIS are aware of the increase of counterfeit stamps being listed for sale online across a number of platforms. They believe that the vast majority of these stamps are being produced outside of the US and they are working with other government agencies to identify and stop these shipments from entering the country. Facebook has responded with a statement regarding the ads that they were made aware of: “A number of pages have been removed from our platform after repeatedly violating our policies against deceptive and misleading practices meant to scam people out of money.” Facebook also encourages all users to report any ads they see which they believe to be in violation of their policies. eBay also has a tough job on its hands as it seems that no matter how many times they remove listings or seller accounts, more will just appear in their place. When asked about the counterfeit stamps eBay responded with the following: “We monitor listings to prevent counterfeit stamps from being offered and Forever stamps may be sold

only by sellers who follow our policies and have a history of high customer satisfaction. Nepal Post has recently issued 17 postal stamps highlighting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals using traditional Mithila paintings to make the message relatable to citizens. Mithila paintings are a renowned art style practiced by women of Nepal and some parts of India. Traditionally, women used to make the two-dimensional figures on the walls of homes with natural co-
lours, and they were particularly common during festivals and celebrations. The sketches of daily life and mythical stories are now fast disappearing from homes, but making a re-appearance in art galleries and craft shops. Local women artists of Janakpur created the images used in the stamp designs. The intermingling of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Mithila paintings is the first-of-its-kind interaction in the history of Philatelic and Postal Stamp Management in Nepal. The United Nations is promoting sustainable development in Nepal and has collaborated with the government on the stamp issue.
Emirates treasure the past

Striking Iron Age archaeological relics from the famous Saruq al Hadid site were selected to feature on recently released commemorative stamps. The eye-catching stamps are a reminder of a rich history and evoke stories of flourishing trade and skilled craftsmen involved in jewellery-making more than 5,000 years ago. The stamps feature a gold ring, a delicate crownshaped ornament and a carved earthen jar. “The stamp is our message to the world. We are informing the world that we have been here for thousands of years and we had strong trade with the west, east, north and south,” an Emirates Post spokesperson said.
New Zealand hidden treasure

Sacha created NZ Post’s original Fellowship of the Ring stamps in 2001, back when she was working for Wētā Workshop in Wellington, New Zealand. Ultimately, it was Sacha’s idea as the designer and visionary to add the micro text. To give the fans a surprise and add something special to the stamps and coins. NZ Post weren’t sure if they could print the stamps and produce coins with micro text that small. However, after consulting with the printers and the Dutch mint they found innovative ways to make it work.
Before and after of a national treasure in Denmark Reported at www.themayor.eu/ On 14 January 1972, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II became Denmark’s regent after the death of her father, King Frederik IX. Now, to mark the 50th anniversary of her reign, PostNord Danmark have issued a special anniversary sheet with 3 stamps. The first stamp on the sheet will depict the Queen’s first official photograph, taken in 1972 when she was only 31 years old. The sheet’s third stamp will portray a similar yet completely different image. In other words, it will show Her Majesty the Queen as her contemporary self, looking back at her younger reflection 50 years later. Between these two versions, PostNord 18 - Stamp News
Danmark has included a stamp of the Royal Arms, the symbol of the kingdom. Commenting on the idea behind the special anniversary sheet, Design Manager Martin Pingel said: “Our idea is to show a mirror image of the Queen, so we get the time span of the 50 years. With the Royal Arms between them, the young Queen looks forward to the upcoming task, while the experienced Queen looks back on the 50 years that have passed.”

Costa Rica has released two new stamps featuring the two toed sloth (Choleopus Hoffman) and three toed sloth (Barypus Variegatus). This coincides with the inclusion of the sloth as a national symbol of Costa Rica and the “National Symbols of wildlife of Costa Rica” Law that was enacted.

This new law is intended to help ensure the protection of not only the sloth but all national symbols of Costa Rica and are yet another way of promoting the natural beauty of Costa Rica to both national and international travellers alike. The design of the postage stamps was worked based on an illustration created by the national artist Alex Núñez, in which both species of sloths are observed hanging from a branch.

Lunar New Year is the most important of the traditional festivals celebrated by Asian cultures throughout the world bringing families together to feast, exchange gifts
of money wrapped in red paper, and burn in to honour their ancestors. The 2022 Lunar New Year will begin on 1 February and 2022 will be the Year of the Tiger. People born in the Year of the Tiger are said to be very active, courageous, persistent, stubborn and imperious, with a tendency to irritability. Famous people born in the Year of the Tiger include Marilyn Monroe, Usain Bolt, Lady Gaga, Steve Irwin and Queen Elizabeth II. Here is a small sample of some of this year’s Lunar New Year stamps. Postal Stationery Welcome to the second postal stationery column for 2022. This month’s column looks at the aerogrammes and airmail envelopes of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate and the Solomon Islands. Solomon Islands Aerogrammes and Airmail Envelopes The British Solomon Island Protectorate commenced using airletters soon after World War II with the issue of an unstamped ‘AIR MAIL LETTER CARD’ (Figure 1) similar in design to the contemporary forms of New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga. One of these airletters used by the Post Office used in 1947 is illustrated in the Kessler Catalog of World Aerograms Volume 1. The initial airletter rates depended on the destination. From 1 June 1951, the airletter rates ranged from 4d to Australia, 5d to New Zealand, 8d to UK, 10d to South Africa, 1/1 to the USA and 1/4 to Brazil. On 1 August 1953, the rates were standardized at 8d to all destinations. The aerogramme rate was increased to 9d on 1 April 1950 which became 8c on 14 February 1966 when Australia converted to decimal currency and, as at the time the British Solomon Islands used Australian currency, they converted to decimal currency as well. The published rate table noted that ‘suitable aerogramme forms were purchasable from the post office’. The rate was increased to 9c in 1971. Formular (unstamped) airletter and aerogramme forms issued by the Australian Post Office for use in Australian territories were also used in the British Solomon Island and are believed to have been sold by the British Solomon Island Post Office. Forms known used in the British Solomon Islands include forms similar to the Australian 1945-50 7d airletters (on grey or blue paper), the 1954-59 10d aerogrammes with a border comprised of red or blue lozenges and AEROGRAMME in red with Figure 2 showing a formular aerogramme (unstamped version of ACSC A8) used in in 1955 at the 8d rate to the USA, and the 1959-60 aerogrammes with ‘AEROGRAMME By Air Mail Par Avon’ in blue at left and a border of red and blue lozenges (Figure 3 shows an example (unstamped version of ACSC A11 with red instructions ‘FOLD FLAPS BEFORE MOISTENING ADHESIVE’ on writing Panel) used in 1961 at the 9d rate to the USA.) The 1960 issue is also inscribed ‘Overseas Service’ (Figure 4). Formular airletters inscribed ‘BRITISH SOLOMON ISLAND PROTECTORATE’ were also used. Figure 5 shows an example CTO in 1951. There were a number of printings of these forms with Figure 6 showing a mint example with ‘BRITISH SOLOMON ISLANDS’ 43 mm in length rather than the 41 mm shown in Figure 5. Private unstamped aerogrammes required approval by the post office but standard British forms seem to have been accepted. Figure 7 shows an Apsley form used at the 8c rate to Australia in 1966 while Figure 8 shows an Apsley form used in 1967 to Hong Kong by the Philatelic Section of the Comptroller of Posts and Telecommunications, GPO Honiara providing advice to a stamp collector ‘The best method of payment is my bank draft, please do not send money orders as the ‘advice’ part much too long to get to us”. (The Post Office would usually send the money order advice by surface mail). An example of a private aerogramme with Solomon Island Post Office approval is shown in Figure 9. The form has been used to Brisbane in 1991 paying the 40c rate. Postal Stationery 1969. The 8c stamp shows a man fishing a night using a light to attract fish and a multipronged spear (Figure 11). The stamp has been impressed on a ‘B & P Aerogramme Form’. The Islands became independent in 1977 when the country’s name was changed to Solomon Islands. The first stamped aerogramme after independence was not issued until 9 September 1983 when a 25c aerogramme was issued for the South Pacific Games 1983 (Figure 12) with the stamp area depicting runners. This form was also issued without the commemorative text (on 30 January 1984) and for Solomon Islands’ first participation in the Olympic Games on 25 April 1984. A 40c aerogramme with the stamp depicting a Taro Beetle was issued on 16 November 1991 for PhilaNippon 91. A larger format 40c aerogramme showing B737 400 aircraft was issued on 22 May 1992 (Figure 13). A version of this aerogramme was also issued on the same day for the World Columbian Stamp Expo 92 in Chicago. On 7 August 1992 a 70c aerogramme was issued with a stamp showing an aircraft over Henderson’s Field (the airfield on Guadalcanal) and Queen Elizabet II in a design based on the 8d adhesive stamp issue of 1956. In addition, the aerogramme depicted a gull and the post office logo. nal with Henderson’s Field playing a significant role in the battle. Similar stamped airmail envelopes were also issued for the Guadalcanal anniversary. Two 50c envelopes (22 x 11 cm) were issued with a similar Henderson Field stamp design (Figure 14) with one of the envelopes having the Guadalcanal 1942-1992 anniversary logo. The envelopes are inscribed on the reverse ‘Manufactured by D&L Philatelic Services Australia’. Two $1.50 envelopes were issued in a large 25.5 x 18 mm size, again one envelope with and the other without the Guadalcanal 50th Anniversary logo. The two envelopes had a stamp design of an aircraft flying over Henderson Field based on the 8c 1967 adhesive stamp issued of the 25th Anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal. Two aerogammes showing orchids and epiphytes were issued for Indopex 93 and Taipei 93 on 29 May 1993 and 14 August 1993 Taipei 93 respectively. Two ‘postage paid’ aerogrammes selling for $1 were issued in 1995 for ‘Visit South Pacific Year 95 Solomon Islands’ which described the Islands as the ‘The eco Tourism Destination of the South Pacific; one depicting a Mask (Figure 15) and the other dancers and a hut. In about 1995, two ‘Postage Paid’ stamped envelopes (16 x 11.5 cm) depicting a gull were issued, one for internal use and the other for international use (Figure 16). Both envelopes had the stamp area inscribed ‘Kipim toktok long Solomone ran olowe’. The airmail international envelope has red and blue chevrons around the border of the envelope. An aerogramme showing two Nicobar Pigeons in the stamp area was issued on 4 June 1996 (Figure 17). Stamp News - 23
Postal Stationery The Nicobar Pigeon is an unusual large pigeon with green and copper hackles. The tail is very short and pure white. The rest of its plumage is metallic green. The illustration on the left of the aerogramme also shows two Yellow-bibbed Lory, a largely red and green parrot with a black cap and a yellow ‘bib’. The panel with the sender’s address shows a view of Arofe, Makira. The following issues were inscribed ‘Solomon Post’. Two aerogrammes showing flowers were issued on 13 September 1999, $1 Heliconia sp, ‘a bush flower commonly found in most jungles of the islands’ (Figure 18) and Dendrobium gouldii, ‘a showy orchid flower most obvious and decorative of Solomon Island wildflowers’. The sender’s address panel of the first shows a view entitled ‘a typical Solomon Island Lagoon village, Nusa Banga, Roviana Lagoon, Western Province’ while the later shows a view described as ‘cascading stream in the central mountains of Guadalcanal’. A ‘postage paid’ ($2) Christmas and ‘Happy New Millennium’ aerogramme was issued on 12 December 2000 with the indicium showing a candle and the address panel with an illustration of an island blowing a conch shell. On 2 January 2001 the aerogramme depicting Dendrobium gouldii was reissued for Hong Kong 2001. In about 2000, two stamped envelopes (22 x 11 cm) inscribed ‘Postage Paid’ were issued with stamps designs similar to the views on the sender’s address panel of the 1999 flower aerogrammes. In about 2010, five aerogrammes were issued with a stamp area featuring Solomon Island themes, the Solomon Post logo with an illustration on the left the same design as the stamp area. Similar designs were shown on the panel with the space for the sender’s address. The five designs were the suberb fruit-dove, a Tepuke Traditional canoe, an outrigger canoe, from the Temotu Province, Finsch’s pygmy parrot (Figure 20), Indo-Pacific Sailfish and the Cardinal Honeyeater (Figure 21). The aerogrammes have no indication that postage has been paid, however, they apparently were sold and used as prepaid aerogrammes. The Indo-Pacific Sailfish was also the subject of a “Postage Paid’ stamped envelope (25.5 x 18 mm) thought to have been issued about 2002. The Finsch’s pygmy parrot aerogramme is of particular interest as it is an example of an error of design on postal stationery as the parrot is incorrectly described as the Cardinal Honeyeater. The error is repeated on all three illustrations of the parrots on the aerogramme. Pygmy parrots are the smallest members of the parrot order. Finsch’s pygmy parrot is characterized by a green head and neck (and a typical length of 9.5 cm. If you are aware of any aerogammes issued by the Solomon Islands since this issue please let me know. David Gill was one of the most remarkable astronomers in the history of Southern African Astronomy. When Gill took over, the Observatory was outdated. He set out to modernise the facility and when he retired, the Cape Observatory was one of the finest and best equipped observatories in the world. Gill pioneered astro photography and did an incredible amount of work towards establishing photographic catalogues of the Southern Sky. He was also a remarkable person outside of the field of astronomy. On 18 May 1869, at age 26 in a time when photography was still in its experimental stage, Gill took a picture of the Moon. Cinderella Corner Welcome to the February edition of Cinderella Corner. This month’s piece will explore labels concerning three categories of commonly used household and outdoors’ materials: plastic, wood, and timber. It also commences by re-addressing some South Australia (SA) publicity labels previously discussed in September 2018’s Cinderella Corner.
South Australian (SA) Government Tourist Bureau
The September 2018 Cinderella Corner explored the six different multicoloured cinderella labels issued by the SA Government Tourist Bureau in 1939, each imperforate on all four sides and measuring 56mm by 46mm. These are illustrated collectively in Figure 1. Each label highlighted a key activity or place in South Australia, bearing the following information: LABEL 1 – One week in Adelaide for £5`5`0 LABEL 2 – The Murray Trip – South Australia – July to Nov – For Rest and Relaxation LABEL 3 – Kangaroo Island – The Fisherman’s Paradise LABEL 4 – August – Almond Blossom Time in Adelaide LABEL 5 – The Flinders Ranges South Australia – Where Summer spends the Winter LABEL 6 – South Australia – Vintage Tours March – April Some further information has since emerged about these colourful pieces. The SA Government Tourist Bureau ordered the labels from the Advertising Printing Office, in Adelaide, in June 1939. An order for 60,000 cinderellas was placed (10,000 of each label type) for a total price of 36 pounds, including tax. The cinderellas were continued in circulation in late 1940 and very early in 1941, with more labels ordered. Then, in January that year, all remaining labels advertising One Week in Adelaide were removed from circulation and destroyed as the holiday price listed on the label (i.e., £5`5`0) was increased to 40 - Stamp News

Plastics
Plastics Week was held in Sydney from 4 to 12 September. The event was organised by the Plastics Institute of Australia and “Australian Plastics” and was celebrated alongside the 1953 Plastics Fair. Exploring the “World of Plastics”, the event attracted many members of the pubic and, alongside several stands, featured a fashion parade. A 22mm x 36mm cinderella was issued to help celebrate the 1953 Plastics Week, as illustrated in Figure 2. Multicoloured and perforated 11 on all four sides, it features the text: PLASTICS Week / SEPT. 4TH – 12TH 1953

Figures 4 & 5 The first annual Australian Plastics Convention was held at the Chevron Hotel, in Sydney, from 19 to 22 June, 1958. To help commemorate the convention’s third event, in 1960, a 40mm x 50mm cinderella label was issued, as illustrated in Figure 3. Coloured orange-red, black and cream, it is imperforate on all four sides and features the text: THE AUSTRALIAN PLASTICS CONVENTION / CHEVRON HOTEL SYDNEY / JUNE 19 – 22, 1960 The final of the three labels concerning ‘plastics’ is illustrated in Figure 4. It was issued to celebrate Plastics Month and features ‘Nylex’ in its centre. Measuring 29mm x 31mm and perforated 11 on all four sides, the red, black and cream product features the text: SEPTEMBER / nylex / REGD. TRADE MARK / PLASTICS MONTH The Nylex brand dates back a century to the early 1920s and today is recognised as one of Australia’s leading brands supplying watering products.
FRIENDLY. The label has been sighted affixed to the front of a 1993 postmarked Victorian cover. A woodworking Machinery Exhibition was held in Melbourne at the Exhibition Buildings (13 to 17 April, 1964). To help commemorate and promote the event, a label was issued and affixed to letters of correspondence to various timber and wood manufacturing organisations, nationwide. Multicoloured and perforated 11½ on three sides, the cinderella measures 63mm x 31mm and features the text: Woodworking machinery exhibition / EXHIBITION BUILDINGS / MELBOURNE APRIL 13 – 17th 1964 The Timber Merchants’ Association (TMA) operated in Victoria for over 130 years, commencing in 1883 and then combining with the Master Grocers Association of Victoria in 2017. The Association’s key objectives were to represent firms interested in timber trade, and the TMA was closely aligned with the Union for over a century, too. The label illustrated in Figure 7, issued by ‘Square Deal Tim’, advertises the TMA. Measuring 45mm x 32mm and rouletted 7 on all four sides, the multicoloured cinderella features the text: SQUARE DEAL TIM / We are members of the TIMBER MERCHANTS’ ASSOCIATION of Melbourne & Suburbs
Wood And Timber
Wooden products have been a staple of the Australian landscape and markets for well over a century. The 1990s-era label illustrated in Figure 5, produced in Victoria, measures 26mm x 39mm and is imperforate on all four sides with curved corners. Coloured yellow and green, it features the text: WARM WONDERFUL WOOD / ENVIRONMENTALLY

Cinderella Corner The Timber Development Association of Australia (TDAA) has branches located across several Australian States. The TDAA was formidable during World War II in its function towards recognising the importance of timber construction during this time. A 1960s label was issued recognising TDAA membership. Measuring 31mm x 22mm and perforated 11 on all four sides, the red and blue cinderella illustrated in Figure 8 features the text: UNITY ACTION / TIMBER DEVELOPMENT ASSN. OF AUSTRALIA / TDA N.S.W. DIVISION / 5/Figure 9 features an example of the label affixed to the reverse of a Sydney cover postmarked 18 March 1966. The 1956 Timber Week was celebrated from 12 to 16 November. The event showcased a number of timber products and related equipment. A parade was also
Figures 7 & 8 held, and this was reported to have attracted a healthy crowd on onlookers. The label illustrated in Figure 10 is large in size, measuring 39mm x 58mm. Rouletted 7 on all four sides and multicoloured, the cinderella features a central motif of a piece of circular timber. It also presents the text: TIMBER WEEK / NOV 12th – 16th The small and elusive timber-related label illustrated in Figure 11 measures 35mm x 28mm and is perforated 10 on all three sides. It features the text TIMBER TIME, and the clock at its centre presents a time of

approximately 2:46. The cinderella is affixed to the reverse of a cover postmarked 20 November 1958, addressed to the Forests Commission of Victoria. The 5th All Australia Timber Congress was held in Adelaide from the 1 to 5 April, 1963. The event featured an extravagant dinner dance at the Hotel Australian, Adelaide, with a decorative souvenir menu produced on solid wood. Figure 12 illustrates a label issued to help commemorate the event. Measuring 100mm x 39mm and imperforate on all four sides, the

A$3,000,00 Melbourne firm, Abacus Auctions, recently held a four-day sale across all areas of the company’s operations: stamps and postal history; coins and banknotes; general collectables; and sporting memorabilia. Hammer prices of A$2,535,000 plus buyer’s premium resulted in total purchases exceeding A$3 million. The first day was devoted to the exceptional ‘Artemis’ Collection of Kangaroo & Map Rarities, for which Abacus produced a hardbound catalogue with a full page of description and illustrations for every one of the 150 lots. Lots priced up to $5000 attracted strong bidding, with most selling for more than the estimates. Top price was $119,800 for the stunning 2/- error pair imperforate three sides that graced the front cover of the catalogue. Day Two saw a further 850 stamp lots put to the market. Collections were hotly contested, with
most of them selling for multiples of the estimates. In the Australia, there was strong bidding for KGV Heads, Other Pre-Decimals, War Savings stamps and ‘Cinderellas’. All the Australian Colonies were well represented with many rare and beautiful stamps selling well. The feature section was 97 South Australian Departmental Stamps that attracted strong bids from around the world and that all went to new homes. Vigorous competition saw the same outcome for 20 lots of Victorian Specimen stamps. Elsewhere, China seems to be experiencing another bull run, with very high prices paid, even for defective stamps. From New Guinea, the GRIs were solid but the NWPI Overprints went ballistic. The 2½d forme of 30 with ‘JBC’ monogram made a record $16,170 but the much scarcer ‘CA’ forme Stamp News - 45

I started a series of articles on one of my blogs recently that I thought collectors here who do not read blogs might enjoy reading. Just a few short pieces to show readers some British Commonwealth stamps and to give examples of British Commonwealth trivia and philatelic things to look for when collecting or studying the stamps they have come across in their stamp collecting journey.
Aden 1953 QEII Definitive 48 - Stamp News
There is so much to learn and so much to enjoy if only one knows what to look for, perhaps. Don’t you agree? The first stamp I have chosen to show is from Aden, from the 1953 QE II definitive issue and showing the classic Dhow. This traditional sailing vessel with one or more masts with settee or sometimes lateen sails was used in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean region. Historians speculate that the dhow was either invented by Arabs or Indians and they were originally fishing or trading vessels used mostly to carry items such as fruit, fresh water or other goods, along the coasts of the Arab countries, as well as Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and East Africa. The next one is from the Ascension 1938 George VI pictorial issue. This issue shows the pictorial images of the George V issue which were reprinted for George VI with his image, and some colour changes. This stamp shows The Pier. Nothing like what it might look like today I would imagine. It is one of the main buildings of the Capital town of Georgetown. The town is named after King George III (of England), who reigned at the time the island was claimed for Britain and garrisoned by the Admiralty in 1815. Ascension Island is an island in the South Atlantic Ocean and part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena and Tristan de Cunha. It issues its own postage stamps these days largely for revenue from thematic collectors. Today the island is the location of a RAF station, a European Space Agency rocket tracking station, an Anglo-American signals intelligence facility along with the a U.S. Space Force ground tracking station in support of the Eastern Range and rocket launches from Cape Canaveral Space Force in Florida and the BBC world service Atlantic Relay Station. – according to my reading at least. I am happy to be corrected of course. I don’t believe it is somewhere you go to for a holiday ! But look at the stamp closely. What is the postal

The Stamps of A.E.Cousins When writing a story about the stamps of the Cook Islands some time ago, I discovered a man who really put his mark on the early stamp issues of the Pacific area – A. E. Cousins. For a brief period in the late 1880s and early 1890s, he designed and engraved numerous iconic stamp issues including the first Life Insurance service stamps of New Zealand. Alfred Ernest Cousins was born in 1852 in St. Helier, the capital of Jersey in the Channel Islands. Quite early on he showed considerable artistic talents and in 1868 he moved to London where he spent the next several years as an engraver’s apprentice. He became quite an accomplished engraver but obviously also had an adventurous side. In 1874 he decided to leave the British Isles for a new life and a new career in New Zealand. In the new country he continued to make a living
as an engraver. In 1885 some of his work was exhibited and he was awarded a silver medal. Perhaps this was the reason why he was approached to engrave Tonga’s first issue in 1886? The following year he also produced stamp designs for Samoa. In 1890 there was a competition to find new designs for New Zealand stamps to be printed locally. Cousins took part and one of his designs was accepted. The 2½d stamp (Fig. 1) features a portrait of Queen Victoria as did all of New Zealand’s postage stamps at the time. He also engraved the dies for the ½d, 2½d and 5d stamps which were typographed by the Government Printing Office. This is the set which was also issued with advertisements printed on the back. However, when selecting a design for the New Zealand Life Insurance service stamps, the British

Christer Brunström Queen was relegated to just being mentioned as V R. Instead of a royal portrait, the stamps feature a lighthouse which was deemed a far more suitable design for this kind of stamp. Cousins engraved the dies in 1891. The Cook Islands issued its first stamps in 1891. They were rather primitive productions but in 1893 it was decided to release a new set of definitive stamps. There were two designs: Queen Makea Takau Ariki (Fig. 2) and a Torea bird, also known as white tern (Fig. 3). These two designs were then used for all of the territory’s stamp issues until 1919. Queen Makea Takau Ariki (1839-1911) was one of the chiefs on the island of Rarotonga where there were at least three different political entities. She seems to have been quite a competent administrator. She reportedly managed to get the islands’ disastrous
finances under control. Even after New Zealand assumed control of the islands, Queen Makea continued to run the country until her death in in 1911. It seems that Cousins’ career in the stamp business had started in 1886 when he was involved in engraving Tonga’s first stamps which were typographed by the Government Printing Office in Wellington. The stamps feature a portrait of King George I (Fig. 4). In this particular case, Cousins worked together with W. R. Bock, a fellow engraver. William Rose Bock (1847-1932) was a Tasmanian who moved to New Zealand in 1868. He lived in Wellington where he worked as an engraver, medallist and stamp designer for the rest of his life. Bock and Cousins established a partnership which lasted from 1883 until 1889. Bock has designed and engraved numerous early New Zealand postage stamps

The Stamps of A.E.Cousins In 1892 Tonga released a new set of definitive stamps which were engraved by A. E. Cousins. In addition to a new portrait of the king (Fig. 5), there was also a design showing the kingdom’s Coat of Arms (Fig. 6). The collaboration between Bock and Cousins continued and in 1887 there was a set of new definitive stamps issued by Samoa. Over the years there were several printings resulting in different perforation and watermark varieties. The engraving of the Palm Trees design (Fig. 7) was done jointly by Bock and Cousins. Cousins both designed and engraved the stamps featuring a portrait of King Malietoa Laupepa (Fig. 8). In 1894 there was an additional 5d value showing the Samoan flag (Fig. 9). The design and the engraving of the die was the work of Cousins. It seems that during his rather short career in the stamp business, Cousins only worked for the Government Printing Office in Wellington. Cousins’ career in stamps more or less ended when the New Zealand Post Office decided to or-
der its new definitive postage stamps from England where several stamp printing companies could produce a superior product. This decision of course angered Cousins who had envisioned a splendid career designing and engraving postage stamps for New Zealand and the other Pacific territories. For the rest of his life, he had to settle for less spectacular engraving work. Cousins was a talented engraver but not always truly appreciated by his contemporaries. Someone once used these words to describe him: “a steady, sober and industrious workman”. All good qualities but who knows where his career would have taken him if he had been commissioned to design and engrave more stamp issues for his adopted homeland. Cousins passed away in Wellington in 1935. Perhaps it is now high time to remember his legacy. He produced some of the most well-known stamp designs in philatelic history. Assembling an exhibit of the stamps designed and/or engraved by Cousins would certainly make for an interesting presentation at a stamp club meeting.
