Welcome aboard your SA Express flight and regardless of your destination, thank you for choosing to travel with us. October is Transport Month and therefore a sentimental month for us as an airline. Launched in 2005, Transport Month showcases the important role of transport in fostering economic growthand connectivity, which further leads to accessibility and urbanisation. SA Express remains steadfast in its mission of being an integrated, sustainable regional airline connecting secondary and main hubs. The Department of Transport encourages each one of us to participate in the provision of a safe, more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system for South Africa. During this period of reform, your positive feedback has been awe-inspiring. It encourages the SA Express team to continue to work hard as we endeavour to meet and exceed your expectations. I believe that it is symbolic that there has been a marked increase in positive feedback from our passengers during Spring, the season of rebirth. As our most important investor, your input, feedback and support are invaluable to our proudly South African airline. As we strive for a reformed and re-envisaged SA Express, your feedback is a constant reminder that the fruits of our labour do not go unnoticed. This restores our confidence that we can rise above our circumstances, and soar. In this regard, it is with great pleasure that I introduce to you our continuous transformational improvement programme, S.O.A.R. S.O.A.R stands for Sustainable Organisational Agile/Accelerated Reform. This programme focuses on four main drivers:people (to improve morale and increase accountability and productivity); sustainable

operations (to improve operational and financial sustainability); brand positioning (to reposition brand SA Express to all stakeholders); and governance (to restructure the organisation and enhance the compliance of processes and practices). This is our roadmap to a re-envisioned SA Express. S.O.A.R will enable the turnaround of the airline’s operations by implementing a change mechanism, as well as the processes required to drive significant operational improvements. True change is not an event, but a journey, one of rediscovery and betterment. This journey is one that I hope you, our passenger, will continue to support and engage in, but equally challenge us about. October is also an important awareness month. This month we highlight important socio-economic challenges, environmental commemoration days, as well asphysical and mental illnesses. 17th October is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a cause with which SA Express as a State Owned Company (SOC) strongly identifies. I look forward to hearing from you on victor.xaba@flyexpress.aero – and to you sharing how you S.O.A.R with SA Express! Until we meet on board!

SOUTH AFRICA The Uber of Volunteering

A hop-on, hop-off bus service has made it easier than ever to volunteer. Text: Lisa Witepski Images Š Better SA

30/

INDWE

You’d love to help out somehow, some way, but you just have no idea how to get started. Sound familiar? Probably – after all, many people are attracted to the idea of lending a hand to a worthy cause, but with all the logistics involved (which charity to support, how to get there, what kind of assistance to provide), it seems easier to do nothing. That’s exactly why Roberta Donovan launched Better SA. Living Ghandi’s exhortation to “be the change you want to see”, she thought about the eagerness with which friends greeted her suggestions to volunteer – so long as she organised the intervention, that is. “Volunteering has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Every weekend, holiday, Christmas morning, I’d sign up to help people. I’d beg my friends and family to come with me, and they’d be happy to do so if I arranged everything. That’s how I realised that the key to getting more people involved was taking the effort out of volunteering,” she recalls. Inclusiveness of this sort is important to her because, as she says, South Africa belongs to everyone, not just a chosen few. “South Africa has a lot of problems. This can be frightening, but it also brings home the fact that we all have to do something to make it better – even the smallest action makes an impact.” With no formal experience in nonprofit organisations besides her own on-the-ground interaction with charities and foundations, Roberta left her job in marketing to start Better SA in 2014.

INDWE

/31

Better SA has grown into a dedicated network of volunteers who meet weekly. She envisaged the initiative as “the Uber of volunteerism” – a platform that does pretty much everything for those wanting to get involved. All they have to do is check out Better SA’s website (www.bettersa.org), select a cause they’d like to get involved with, and show up at the bus hub. The rest is taken care of. Better SA provides transport to the relevant venue as well as the supplies required to make the intervention happen, and then takes the volunteers home again. Buses run in Johannesburg every Saturday morning, and volunteers are back in time to enjoy an afternoon braai. As Roberta says, it doesn’t get easier than this. That’s probably why the public has so readily embraced the initiative. Roberta says that when it was first launched, there were about five volunteers – mostly friends and family members who had been coerced – on the bus. Fast-forward three years, and Better SA isn’t able to keep up with the demand. The profile of volunteers is tremendously varied. The youngest helper has been just three years old, while the oldest person to

32/

INDWE

hop on the bus was 92. What’s fascinating, says Roberta, is the number of “have-nots” who are anxious to help their countrymen. “We see residents of [Joburg township] Alexandra coming on board to help out with projects in [another Jozi township] Diepsloot, for example,” Roberta enthuses. “We get everyone from students to retirees.” There’s certainly no dearth of willing hands. Nor are there any questions about who to help. Roberta explains that charities have to meet certain criteria before they will be considered as beneficiaries. For instance, they have to prove that they are reliable, as: “We can’t risk taking volunteers to a charity only to find the premises locked and empty.” They also have to demonstrate their willingness to work with volunteers. Cultivated over her long-standing interest in volunteering, Roberta’s connections in Johannesburg’s townships made it easy to find such beneficiaries when the project was first starting out – and since then, the number of projects supported by Better SA has boomed. Roberta explains that initiatives range from grooming and walking shelter animals to making sleeping bags for the homeless. There is, however, a strong focus on education, as Roberta is emphatic that this is the only way out of poverty.

Consequently, volunteers are invited to take part in projects like numeracy and literacy workshops, or teaching children and the unemployed how to use a computer. “It’s amazing to see how kids, especially, engage with volunteers. They seldom receive this level of attention, and they’re so eager to learn.” Experiences like this are what make volunteering so utterly addictive, she says. Despite its successes, funding remains a challenge for Better SA. With a little more sponsorship, Better SA would not only be able to provide more buses to service Johannesburg, Roberta would also be able to realise her dream of introducing the service to Durban and Cape Town. That’s something she’s desperate to do. Every week, she receives pleas from people in these cities who would love to take part in the kind of active citizenship offered by Better SA. For Roberta, this is a sign of South Africa’s remarkable spirit. It’s what keeps her hopeful for the country’s future. “It’s impossible to sit on a bus every weekend, surrounded by volunteers who want to make a difference, and not have complete faith that there are good things ahead for us,” she concludes. If you would like to sponsor a bus or take part in Better SA’s corporate Employee Volunteer Programme, email info@bettersa.org.

Not only is it slightly more kid friendly if you have little ones, but there’s no pressure to dress up, you can drink all the coffee you want (or wine, if you don’t mind a few judgmental looks), and when else can you have something sweet to eat as a main meal?

The Bike & Bean

The greater Durban area is a fantastic choice for breakfast outings – it’s warm all year round, sunrise happens appallingly early in summer (so breakfast can feel a bit like lunch), and there is no shortage of great eateries on the beach, in the leafy ’burbs or at bustling markets. Take your pick. THE BIKE & BEAN DURBAN Durban Country Club Beach www.bikebeandurban.com +27 82 773 6870 Open from 06h00 to 18h00, The Bike & Bean Durban pumps, particularly from about 08h00 to 10h00. They’ve kept things simple with great single origin African coffee and a small range of unpretentious meals – bacon and egg rolls, avo on toast, and toasted sandwiches, as well as a selection of cakes and muffins. Really, you can’t beat one of their cappuccinos and a “sarmie” as you sit at one of the tables and look over the vegetated dunes, beach and ocean. You may need to queue with the cyclists, surfers, families, skateboarders and other locals who flock to the café, but it’s totally worth it and the vibe is great. You can also rent a bicycle from the café if the idea of cycling up and down the promenade appeals to you. And why wouldn’t it?

First thing in the morning, what else is there that matters? Set on the ground floor of the Belaire Suites Hotel, just across the road from the promenade and a forested dune, Café Jiran serves pastries from 07h00 and then breakfast from 08h30 to 11h00. And whether you’re there for a quick bite or a long, drawn out affair, they have the meal for you. really, why would you order anything but the banana bread French toast with bacon and honey? After breakfast, you’d be insane not to take a stroll through the 30-acre garden, with its multitude of camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias, orchids, bromeliads and cycads. It really is a spectacular place to spend a few hours. HONOURABLE MENTIONS Of course, you could go to a different place every day of the week for a topnotch breakfast. Surf Riders Café (+27 31 825 8528) at Addington Beach is right on the promenade and the place to go when you have a massive hunger. The Breakfast Works dish is gnarly – we’re talking a sesame bun filled with two poached eggs, Gouda and chorizo gravy, baked in the pizza oven, and topped with hollandaise sauce. Up in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, the Shongweni Farmers & Craft Market (www.shongwenimarket.co.za /

+27 31 777 4686) is held every Saturday, and you’d need to go there every Saturday for a year just to sample all the food on offer. A firm favourite is the falafel wrap by Falafel Fundi; if you’re hungry after this, there is no filling you. Up the coast on Chartwell Drive in Umhlanga, Vovo Telo (+27 31 561 6593) bustles every day. Say what you will about franchised restaurants, but there’s a reason the locals keep flocking back to Vovo Telo – their griddle stack breakfast (waffles layered with bacon, sautéed rocket, poached eggs and cheese sauce) will keep you going all day. For the ultimate early morning experience, the breakfast buffet at The Oyster Box’s Ocean Terrace restaurant (+27 31 514 5000) is about as lavish as things get – think champagne, oysters, a massive Continental selection, pancake and waffle station, and hot breakfasts to die for. We recommend the Welsh rarebit or whisky oats.

PICTURES The Man With the Red Bag

Take a street in Soweto. Any street. Most people will see it as it is. Photographer Andile Bhala sees the beauty behind it. Text: Lisa Witepski Images © Andile Bhala

INDWE

Though born and bred in Soweto, Andile first started falling in love with the township as a young soccer player. “We’d sometimes walk up to 5 km to get to our next match, so I got to see how different people lived and their struggles to make it through the day.” Soon, he had the urge to capture these scenes on film. With no camera of his own, he borrowed his cousin’s pointand-shoot. “I would barter chocolates given to me by kids as payment for soccer coaching in return for the camera,” he recalls. Later, he started shooting on his phone, swiftly gaining a strong Instagram following who appreciated his documentary-style photography. Andile’s breakthrough moment came after being selected as a finalist in Standard Bank’s Portraits in Progress competition. The same image later won him a Fujifilm X10 camera – the one he’s currently using – in a contest hosted by Fujifilm and Instagram. That camera has become his trademark. “People in the township know me as ‘the man with the red bag’,” he says. It’s a reference to the bag that’s always around his neck as he cycles through Soweto looking for a scene that speaks to him. Carrying his camera close to his heart is a physical expression of the way he sees his work: He’s prepared to wait hours for a moment that makes him want to take a closer look, because each shot carries meaning.

Generally, he prefers photographing people to places. “You can make a connection with people and you a learn a lot from them. I like to shoot a candid picture, then take a posed shot – it’s the difference between the front a person presents to the world and who they really are.” In this way, Andile gets to tell people’s stories, which is what his photography is all about. “One of my friends once pointed out that my photography has become about making the daily struggle look beautiful. But it’s not about taking pictures that are beautiful. I want to take pictures that make an impact. Instead of presenting problems, I want to find solutions. Things that I might consider to be small details are significant to others.” This approach has changed the way Andile passes through life. Although he has a full-time job, he admits that his photography refuses to remain a hobby. Instead, it’s shaped the way he lives and the way he looks at things, and in turn, his lifestyle influences the shots he takes. The music he’s listening to has a special role to play in this regard. When he’s got jazz on the playlist, his pictures have a distinctly old-school feel that make them very different to his images when he’s had hip-hop or Afropop on repeat. Andile’s aesthetic lets his images speak for themselves. But he also wants to be a mouthpiece for the Soweto he loves. That’s why his current project involves him cycling 150 km around the township’s 38

suburbs, capturing 150 images that tell its stories. Make no mistake: this is not simply a case of hopping on the bike, pointing the lens and then curating the results. Andile is taking thousands of shots in the hope that he will unearth a series that does justice to the vibrant street culture in South Africa’s largest township. It’s a project that’s particularly important to him because his ’hood is better known for its mean streets. “I’m trying to show people a side of Soweto they may not have seen. It’s not that I like poverty – I hate it. But I want to make my audiences imagine something different.

46/

INDWE

I want them to fall in love with Soweto’s shadows and see her beauty.” As part of this project, he launched 31 Faces, a tribute to South Africa’s women in celebration of Women’s Month in August. Andile views this initiative as a chance to have 31 conversations with sisters, mothers, wives and daughters. And also 31 chances to discover who he is as a man, through women’s eyes. He enjoys mentoring other young aspirant photographers. As a self-taught photographer, he’s certainly able to give an interesting perspective on their work.

At the same time, he’s working towards hosting his first exhibition – something which is taking a lot longer than he would like but, as he says, photography has taught him to have patience. “It would be amazing if I could enter a collaboration that would allow me to tell my stories. At the end of the day, I want to get people thinking, to be a positive role model. When I was a soccer player, people would say, ‘There’s that guy with a football scholarship.’ Now they say, ‘There’s that guy with the red bag.’ My photography has become a way to elevate life.”

The Ladies OF THE LAKE It is becoming increasingly difficult to find new places from which to explore South Africa’s exquisite natural beauty, especially when one wants to combine it with a sporting activity. World-renowned golfing legend, Jack Nicklaus, once remarked: “There are always new places to go fishing. For any fisherman, there is always a new place, always a new horizon.” True though this may be, finding those places are not always easy in a saturated tourism landscape. That makes our recent discovery of the Shayamanzi Houseboat experience all the more magnificent, as it offers the perfect synthesis of world-class luxury travel and an individually catered living experience, set within the splendid beauty of Northern KwaZulu-Natal. Traversing Lake Jozini (also known as Pongolapoort Dam), Shayamanzi I and Shayamanzi II are by far the best vantage points from which one can enjoy the superb wildlife seen on the shores of this vast natural expanse. Lake Jozini is located close to the bustling town of Pongola, and is a comfortable, yet brisk drive – on relatively good roads – from either Johannesburg or Durban. Shayamanzi is launched from the jetty at the world-class Jozini Tiger Lodge, where there is ample secure parking and a shuttle that ferries you and your luggage to the shore. Once on board a Shayamanzi Houseboat, guests can soak up the stunning scenery of the Lebombo Mountains and Pongola Game Reserve, and either enjoy calm serenity on the water or the thrill of tiger fishing. Meaning “to hit the water” in Zulu, the Shayamanzi experience is more than a

trip on a boat on a lake. Shayamanzi II’s luxurious cabins, stylish upper deck bar, and dining facility is a holiday haven for everyone. If attracting “tigers” on the fly is your game, then Jozini Lake is the place to be – in fact, it is the only place to be in South Africa to attract the striped “water dog”. Within minutes of boarding Shayamanzi II on our recent visit, both the experienced as well as the novice anglers in our group were bending their rods from either of Shayamanzi II’s three powered tender boats, as the “tigers” lit up the water’s surface. If you think fishing is best left to more experienced anglers, the surrounding Pongola Game Reserve and Pongolo Nature Reserve provide spectacular game viewing from the water’s edge. A large variety of wildlife can be viewed from the Shayamanzi decks or the tender boats, and even birders will find the area’s 350 species very enticing. Bush birds,

raptors, and water birds are plentiful, as are cormorants, herons, ducks, storks, and many more. Shayamanzi I and Shayamanzi II were the first houseboats in South Africa and are designed to deliver a one-of-a-kind experience. Manned by experienced staff, a trip on Shayamanzi is all about taking time out to appreciate the special wonders of the area in comfort and style. All meals served on board are prepared to the highest standards. A hearty breakfast will prepare you for the day’s many activities, while a sumptuous lunch is the perfect way to spend an early afternoon recalling the morning’s tall fishing tales. In the evenings, the onboard chef will prepare a stylish threecourse dinner, or even a braai under the stars. The fully stocked bar is open until late, while bottomless tea and coffee is available all day, accompanied by freshly baked rusks and other treats.

On-board accommodation is in one of ten cabins serviced daily by the deck hands. Six comfortable cabins are situated on the lower deck, and offer spectacular views of the surrounding Lebombo Mountains through large sliding doors that open onto the lake. The houseboats’ catamaran design allows for four more en suite cabins – two per pontoon – each with generously sized windows. With all cabins occupied, Shayamanzi II can accommodate up to 20 passengers, while Shayamanzi I will easily lodge up to 12. Every Shayamanzi adventure is to be savoured and can be enjoyed by both young and old. Perfectly suited for corporate getaways or special family celebrations, the Lake Jozini experience on board Shayamanzi will change your perception of this local holiday and call you back to “hit the water” again and again. For more information on the Lake Jozini experience aboard Shayamanzi, visit www.shayamanzi.co.za.

WHAT TO EXPECT • A uniquely memorable experience enjoying the best of nature from luxurious houseboats while cruising across 16,000 ha of open water. • Excellent game viewing and bird watching especially in the early morning and late afternoon. Seaside Holiday

THE ULTIMATE STRESS RELIEF The findings of financial news company Bloomberg are worrying: South Africa is the second most stressed country in the world. And the fact that half of South Africans do not take their annual leave – as reported in a global survey by Ipsos and Reuters – is definitely a contributing factor to this alarming statistic. Text & Images © Premier Hotels & Resorts

“Studies have shown that proximity to the ocean can have a positive impact on one’s stress levels,” says Grant Sandham, Group Sales & Marketing Manager of Premier Hotels & Resorts. “For example, researchers at the University of Exeter’s

58/

INDWE

European Centre for the Environment and Human Health have found that the seaside significantly reduces stress, with one of the reasons cited that it encourages physical activity – a proven stress-management strategy.

“This may also be due to the ocean’s sound, which a Stanford University neuroscientist says people find calming because of its regular wave patterns. Another possible reason found by the neuroscientist is that it induces a mild

meditative state that heightens awareness of one’s surroundings and emotions,” Sandham adds. South Africans can find out for themselves why the ocean is such an effective stress-reliever, as Premier Hotels & Resorts offers nine beachside properties, catering to all pockets, in the country’s coastal regions. In KwaZulu-Natal, they can unwind by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean at properties like Splendid Inn Pinetown, Premier Hotel The Richards (Richards Bay), Splendid Inn Bayshore, or Splendid Inn Port Edward. While in the Western Cape, they can mellow out at Premier Resort The Moorings (Knysna) on the banks of the lagoon, or enjoy the tranquillity of the Atlantic’s waves from Premier Hotel Cape Town. In the Eastern Cape, those staying at Premier Hotel East London ICC, Premier Hotel Regent or Splendid Inn King David, can de-stress while enjoying the ocean spray from the East London Esplanade. “Stress can have a negative impact both on your body and your behaviour. Non-profit medical practice and research group, the Mayo Clinic, states clearly that stress can lead to health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes, as well as anxiety, depression and substance abuse,” says Sandham. “With 2017 having been especially stressful for South Africans, given our current economic situation, it is important for our health and wellbeing that we take a well-deserved break to relax and recharge”. The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) World Heritage Committee recently added South Africa’s ǂKhomani Cultural Landscape in the Northern Cape to the country’s list of World Heritage Sites, during its 41st session in Krakow, Poland, in July. The committee also inscribed two other sites from Africa – one in Eritrea and another in Angola. “The decision that was taken marks a long-awaited historical moment for us, the ǂKhomani San, and all other San/Bushman communities,” said Dirk Pienaar, a ǂKhomani community member, who addressed the session. He said it was an acknowledgement of universal value and importance. “This listing will thus provide a foundation for us to continue to preserve, protect and practise our ancient culture and traditions with minimum threat of extinction within the current society.” The ǂKhomani Cultural Landscape is located on South Africa’s border with Botswana and Namibia in the northern part of the country. It falls within the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and covers an area of 959,100 ha, according to the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA). “The ǂKhomani and related San people are unique in that they descend directly from an ancient population that existed in Southern Africa some 150,000 years ago,” said a spokesperson from the DEA. “[They are] the ancestors of the entire human race.” This area with its red dunes has changed minimally since the Stone Age, and the

ǂKhomani Cultural Landscape has been home to people who learned to survive in the extreme desert because of their knowledge of the land. During the session, Unesco expounded on why the site was considered worthy of World Heritage status: “The ǂKhomani San developed a specific ethnobotanical knowledge, cultural practices and a worldview related to the geographical features of their environment. The ǂKhomani Cultural Landscape bears testimony to the way of life that prevailed in the region and shaped the site over thousands of years.” MUCH NEEDED RECOGNITION In her acceptance speech, the directorgeneral of the Department of Environmental Affairs, Nosipho Ngcaba, said South Africa is committed to supporting efforts of economic development in the area,

contributing to job creation, enhancing tourism experiences, and contributing to skills development. Pienaar said that the community would continue to respect their culture and pass it on to future generations. “Conservation for us is not a planned action or a buzzword to use to impress when needed,” he said. “It is not a choice but a way of life that is instilled within all San people from a very tender age.” He also gave thanks to the elder community members, including “Oupa Dawid Kruiper and Ouma Una Rooi, who died sadly whilst fighting for our cause”. South Africa’s other eight World Heritage Sites are: the Fossil Hominid Sites of South Africa, Maloti-Drakensberg Park (transboundary with Lesotho), the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, the Vredefort Dome, the Richtersveld

OTHER AFRICAN NEWCOMERS Angola’s Mbanza Kongo and Eritrea’s Asmara were the other African sites inscribed as World Heritage Sites in July. Mbanza Kongo was the political and spiritual capital of the Kingdom of Kongo, one of the largest states in Southern Africa from the 14th century to the 19th century. When the Portuguese arrived, stone buildings were added. According to Unesco: “Mbanza Kongo illustrates, more than anywhere in Sub-Saharan Africa, the profound changes caused by the introduction of Christianity and the arrival of the Portuguese into Central Africa.” Asmara, 2,000 m above sea level and the capital of Eritrea, became a military outpost for Italy, its colonial power. After 1935, the city went through a massive construction project. “It is an exceptional example of early modernist urbanism at the beginning of the 20th century and its application in an African context,” Unesco noted.

Touring an African

METROPOLIS The Best of Bulawayo

The terms “game drive” and “Victoria Falls” lit up my screen while googling the phrase “travel stories in Zimbabwe”. Deeply disappointed by these limiting results, I began to dig a little deeper to find a fresh approach to exploring our neighbour to the north.

Sick and tired of the humdrum tourist routes, I decided to explore the slightly lesser known Bulawayo region in Zimbabwe. As the second largest city in Zimbabwe, after Harare, Bulawayo presents a unique way of discovering what this African country has to offer. Unlike most Hollywood movies would have you believe, Zimbabwe does not just consist of open plains of bushveld filled with wildlife. Bulawayo is regarded as the industrial centre of the country, and is filled with sky-scrapers, boutique hotels, and upmarket restaurants. Motsamai Guest Lodge is a fine example of the sort of upmarket accommodation one can find in Bulawayo, and is perfectly suited for those who are travelling for business purposes. This luxury lodge offers conference facilities, as well as comfortable, contemporary accommodation options with complimentary Wi-Fi access. The lodge also has its own restaurant and pool

area, and offers airport transportation at guests’ request. Book online at Hotels. com, or call +263 9 246 201. For those who would like to experience more of the history of this nation, book in at the Cresta Churchill Hotel. A mere 6.7 km from the Railway Museum, and 7 km from the Natural History Museum, this hotel is the perfect base from which to learn more about the city. Located in one of Bulawayo’s older buildings, the Cresta Churchill Hotel is also steeped in character and old-world charm – without skimping on the conveniences of modern technology. The hotel has air-conditioning and allows its guests complimentary access to Wi-Fi. To book, visit www.crestahotels.com. 26 on Park Restaurant provides the perfect opportunity to venture into a Bulawayo suburb. Situated just outside of the city centre, 26 on Park serves up a diverse menu set in a beautiful old colonial house with a stunning garden and outdoor dining area. Try some local delights such as the regional Nyanga trout, game venison pie, or Zimbabwe dry-aged beef or – if you prefer to stick to what you know best – their thin-crust pizzas are also delicious. While accommodation offerings and restaurants are all fair and well, the question that might be lingering on your lips is why one might want to stay in Bulawayo in the first place? Firstly, it is the nearest large city to the famous Hwange and Matobo National Parks, and also to the iconic Victoria Falls, making it the ideal city

in which to stop over if you do still hope to visit the traditional tourist landmarks of Zimbabwe. It is also home to its own Matobo National Park, which provides some excellent opportunities for game sightings (animals including antelope, giraffe, zebra, impala, wildebeest, and ostrich can be found here). It is also well-known for the Matobo Hills, a range of balancing rock formations that stand atop a hill, as well as for its ancient San rock paintings at Nswatugi Cave. Its main draw card, however, is the Khami Ruins which lie 22 km west of the city. Listed as a Unesco World Heritage site, the Khami Ruins cover an area of about 108 hectares, spread over a distance of about 2 km. The ruins are all that is left of the capital of the Torwa dynasty, which arose around 1450 –1650 AD after the collapse of the Great Zimbabwe Kingdom. Objects from Europe and China have been found in these ruins, which shows that Khami must have been a major centre for trade in ancient times. Visiting what is left of the stone walls which once housed a vibrant, and once powerful ancient civilization is a deeply moving experience which helps a person regain perspective on life. Zimbabwe has many reasons for tourists to come and stay. As truly spectacular as its game parks and waterfalls might be, its cities and historic landmarks are equally alluring. Exploring Bulawayo is a great way for tourists to discover the fascinating metropolitan culture of this vibrant country.

Creating Resilient Cities in Challenging Times When the international Rockefeller Foundation extended an invitation to Durban and Cape Town to join its 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) programme, it committed to helping these cities become more resilient to 21st century physical, social and economic challenges.

Resilience, it seems, has become the new global buzzword. But in terms of the 100RC programme, the term has been refined to specifically describe “urban resilience”, which it defines as the “capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses and systems within a city to survive, adapt and grow, no matter what kinds of chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience”. Chronic stresses, of which there are 11 in total, are defined as slow-moving disasters that weaken the fabric of a city. These include high unemployment, an overburdened or inefficient public transportation system, and financial and/ or economic crisis. Among the 37 acute shocks recognised by 100RC which refer to sudden, sharp events that threaten a city are earthquakes, fires, floods and outbreaks of disease. Along with funding to hire a chief resilience officer to lead a city’s resilience efforts, the 100RC programme offers member cities: technical support to develop a holistic strategy to reflect each city’s distinct needs; access to an innovative platform of private sector and NGO services to support strategy development and implementation; and inclusion in the 100RC network in terms of knowledge sharing and best practice examples. The 100RC programme identifies seven qualities that a resilient urban area needs

74/

INDWE

to develop to mitigate shocks and stresses. These include being: • Reflective and resourceful: The ability to learn from the past and use these learnings to inform future decisions, while also finding alternative ways to use existing resources better. • Robust, redundant and flexible: Robust, for example, in terms of developing infrastructure that will not fail catastrophically when design thresholds are exceeded; redundant in terms of purposively creating spare capacity to accommodate disruption; and flexibility in terms of an ability to adopt alternative strategies in response to changing circumstances. • Inclusive and integrated: Ensuring broad consultation, engagement and involvement while at the same time bringing together systems and institutions and the pooling of knowledge and resources. When Durban was inaugurated into the 100RC programme and turned its sights towards achieving these qualities, it led to a partnership between Tongaat Hulett, Dube TradePort and the eThekwini Municipality, with the three bodies working together to develop a resilience framework for the northern area of Durban. “Being resilient is about making sure the foundations are in place to allow us to respond effectively to challenges and,

where necessary, to fundamentally change how cities operate,” says Durban’s chief resilience officer, Debra Roberts. The key corridor identified by the partnership stretches from the Ohlanga River in the south to the uThongathi River in the north and includes the uMdloti River. Inlands, it stretches to the edge of Verulam and beyond Tongaat into Buffelskloof. Acknowledging the need for balanced and sustainable development in the region to overcome poverty and provide economic upliftment, while still preserving the integrity of threatened wetlands in the region, Rory Wilkinson, planning director at Tongaat Hulett, says: “The project arose out of an acknowledgement that economic development is key if we are to alleviate poverty, which is an imperative at national, provincial and local government level. In order to achieve this, cities need to grow in a way that optimises land use, infrastructural provision and promotion of investment which will generate inclusive economic development, while managing the pressure urbanisation places on the natural environment through largescale transformation.” Meanwhile, on the opposite coast of South Africa, and recognising that strong central business districts invariably help to build strong economies in metropoles, the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) was invited to attend Cape

Town’s first large-scale 100RC workshop earlier this year. With the CCID primarily responsible for attracting new investment into the city’s traditional CBD while ensuring that existing investment stays, CCID CEO Tasso Evangelinos notes: “Cape Town’s participation in the 100RC programme is obviously a citywide, holistic one that covers the entire metropole, but we’re looking very seriously at how we can also bring the concept of resilience down to the microcosm of the Central City, so that we can prepare for future stresses or shocks that could affect not only our own area, but have a ripple effect in the metropole beyond our boundaries. “To achieve resilience for the Central City,” says Evangelinos, “we’re looking very specifically at how we can learn from the past and use the data we’ve collected and trends we’ve identified over the past few years. These can then inform the best possible strategies for the CBD’s future and the way in which that impacts all stakeholders, right from how an investor considers the CBD for investment, to how an employee who works in the CBD or student who studies here engages with the urban environment.” The data and trends Evangelinos refers to have been collated since the CCID came into being in 2000, initially to plan operations across three of its divisions, namely public safety, urban management and social development. More recently, since 2012, these have also been used by its communications division as the foundation for the CCID’s annual investment guide, The State of Cape Town Central City Report. Carola Koblitz, author of the publication and communications manager for the CCID, elaborates: “This guide has always looked back at the economic climate of the CBD in terms of being a ‘barometer’ for

investors, but the extent of our information gathering and the consequent analyses we now do has begun to enable us to forecast areas of potential growth and business opportunity, as well as challenges that we may be facing.” Although the report is only published once a year, research and analysis is ongoing throughout the year in order to be constantly aware of any changes in trends. “For example, six months into 2017, we know that commercial and retail vacancy rates are still relatively stable, while the unprecedented year-on-year increases we’ve seen in the prices of residential property are beginning to show a stabilisation,” Koblitz explains. This, Koblitz believes, bodes well for ensuring that residential property in the CBD remains within realistic levels, even though it has risen steeply in the past few years off a low base since the mid2000s. “Hopefully, the stabilisation we’re now seeing will also begin to encourage developers to take cognisance of the need for more affordable units that could accommodate those in the CBD workforce who find themselves in the ‘missing middle’ – people who do not qualify for government subsidies but who spend up to 40 % of their income just on transportation. “For example, how can we provide accommodation for bank clerks, shop assistants, social workers, teachers or call centre staff – the employees who very often make up the backbone of a CBD economy?” Evangelinos finishes by saying: “It’s time for us as a CBD to take a holistic view of our downtown strengths as well as challenges, and work out how we can create a strong core to take us forward and create urban resilience that stretches from our business communities to our residential and visitor economies.”

SEASIDE SLUMBERS Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel The phrase “I slept like a baby” must have been coined by a guest who had the privilege of staying at the Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel in Paternoster. Paternoster is an unassuming sort of town just two hours’ drive from Cape Town in the Western Cape. A local described it as an “ocean-side Franschhoek” because its culinary and accommodation offerings are roughly on par with those of its upmarket Winelands rival. No accommodation option better exemplifies that statement than the

Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel. This seaside gem is situated right at the edge of the town, thereby providing a sense of exclusivity. A stone’s throw from the secluded, soft sandy beach, the hotel is in the prime position for those who are hoping to escape the stresses of city-living – after all, there is nothing more calming than the ocean. The

sound of the waves crashing on the shore is like the soft whispers of a mother’s lullaby to a disgruntled infant who refuses to give in to weariness. One night at this hotel and any stress-induced insomnia will become nothing more than a distant memory. As a travel journalist, I have discovered that two things tend to determine my thoughts regarding a hotel. The first is

whether they provide fresh milk, or choose instead to torture their guests with those dreadful plastic capsules which offer only the promise of lactose goodness, but nothing more. The second is the kind of pillows provided. I am often left frustrated by pillows that are far too thin, or far too fat, or a combination of the two which results in a tower of neck cramps and sleeplessness. I am happy to report that Strandloper Ocean Beach Hotel scores well on both of these accounts. Fresh milk is provided in an adorable Alice in Wonderland-looking glass bottle with a handwritten sign indicating the contents as “Fresh Milk”, and the pillows are the perfect height and firmness for a restful night’s sleep. There are various accommodation styles at the hotel. The idyllic Ocean Suites overlook the shoreline, the spacious Nature Suites overlook the natural open veld, and the budget-friendly Courtyard Rooms include their own private courtyard in which to socialize after a day spent at the beach. The hotel’s restaurant, Leeto (meaning journey in the Khoi language), led by renowned Chef Garth Almazan, offers breathtaking views of the coast, and the owners encourage guests to bring a book and sit on the deck while sipping champagne and taking in the views. The hotel also offers its own Elements Wellness Suite which provides stressrelieving Kalahari treatments and pampering sessions. No matter which way you look at it, everything you need for the ultimate restful retreat can be found at the Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel. Mariner’s Wharf - Hout Bay Rich in history and pulsating with character, Mariner’s Wharf must be Hout Bay’s greatest asset. As the pioneer of harbour-front developments nd in the Southern Hemisphere, Mariner’s Wharf is now in its 33 32rd year, and continues to captivate visitors with its unique array of delicacies, history, curios and collectables.

There is an air of excitement as seagulls proudly parade along the pier and fishermen offload their morning’s catch. Lobster trawlers bob gently in the water, their cargo of crates and nets piled high, while off in the distance a group of minstrels begin their morning song and dance. It is a mix of all that a hot South African summer’s day encapsulates, while Mariner’s Wharf, situated at the entrance to Hout Bay harbour, offers visitors a truly eclectic experience. Stanley Dorman conceptualised, created and developed Mariner’s Wharf after visiting the USA in 1974 where he was inspired by the hustle and bustle of the San Francisco harbour-front. He made the decision to use his knowledge of several decades in the fishing industry to create something similar in South Africa. Having grown up in Hout Bay, this

seemed the obvious location for his masterpiece. He started assessing waterfronts around the globe and his vision began taking shape. He wanted something very different, that was memorably South African, and authentically Western Capelike. After ten years, his thoughts evolved into Mariner’s Wharf, South Africa’s very first harbour-front emporium. Mariner’s Wharf is now world-renowned and made up of an impressive complex of outlets specialising in seafood and maritime products. The Wharf as a whole serves as a sort of working museum, with the antique shop crammed full of most things maritime, with a remarkable array of items ranging from old carved whale’s teeth, maps and bells to shipwreck artefacts. The Wharf is also home to a seafood factory, as well as the Fisherman’s Wharf

Fish Market, where the remarkable hull of the original 1940’s trawler The Kingfisher welcomes one inside. The Fish Market is stocked with delicious delicacies, including internationally renowned Cape Coast Smoked Snoek, which is produced at the factory’s smokeries. Adjacent to the Fish Market is Ye Olde Wine & Liquor Locker, the fist bottle store in South Africa to be licensed for Sunday trading. Stocking an extraordinary range of local wines, beers, liquor and imported liqueurs, one can even buy special bottles of wine made exclusively for Mariner’s Wharf, presented in fish-shaped bottles. DRY SKIN Gloves In A Bottle

If you are one of many who are just plain sick and tired of your dry, cracked, red and itchy or flaky skin, then now might just be the time to toss out your old conventional artificial moisturiser and try the latest in shielding lotion technology, Gloves In A Bottle.

Text & Images © Gloves In A Bottle

The difference between a shielding lotion and a general moisturiser is that conventional moisturisers are designed to flood the external surface of the skin with artificial moisture. By contrast, Gloves In A Bottle is designed to achieve two key requirements when trying to maintain or establish a healthy vital skin, namely to: • Lock in the natural moisture, lipids and oils of the skin for deep-rooted nourishment through all seven layers of the skin, from the inside out. • Lock out moisture-depleting irritants that our skin comes into contact with on a daily basis such as solvents, chemicals, soaps and dirt. In essence, Gloves In A Bottle affords the user the opportunity to “keep the good stuff in and the bad stuff out”. Dry skin is inevitably the end result of the loss of the natural moisture, oils and

82/

INDWE

lipids of the skin. Gloves In A Bottle has been specifically designed to prevent this, and has been scientifically proven to be six times more effective than conventional moisturisers. Once applied, it creates a totally invisible and undetectable layer on the skin’s surface, whilst still allowing for your skin to breathe and perspire optimally. Unlike artificial moisturisers, Gloves In A Bottle does not wash off and instead comes off through natural exfoliation. A single application will last four to 12 hours, allowing for maximum protection and nourishment from the inside out. Gloves In A Bottle is manufactured in the USA by the leaders in shielding-lotion technology and is recommended and used internationally by more than 9,500 dermatologists and medical practitioners. It is gentle enough to be used on a

baby’s bum to lock out uric acid, yet robust enough that it is used by large industrial organisations that include the fuel, manufacturing, hospital, agriculture, chemical and construction industries. Once applied, it gives your skin a smooth satin feel and is suitable for use on your hands, face, body and feet. With more than 10,000,000 bottles sold, and the fact that a single 240 ml bottle will last six to 12 months (with more than 400 applications per bottle) at an average cost of R20 per month, can you afford not to give it a try? Take a step out of the box, try Gloves In A Bottle and give your body the platform to utilize its own natural moisture, lipids and oils for what they were designed for – creating a healthy, vital skin. The results are truly amazing.

SQUARE EYES

Extended Screen Time is Damaging Our Eyes Alarming statistics suggest that the average adult spends more than 11 hours staring at some sort of screen every day. In South Africa specifically, according to a 2016 article by tech news site htxt Africa, screen time per person is just under five hours a day. This has likely increased dramatically along with advances in smartphone and tablet technologies in the last year. What is so worrying about the inordinate amount of time people spend looking at screens, says Ruahan NaudĂŠ, CEO at Dynamic Vision, is the harmful effect it is having on our eyes.

Text: Supplied Images Š iStockphoto.com

INDWE

/85

“From working on laptops and computer screens, to checking smartphones for messages and updates throughout the day, to reading and browsing on tablets, followed by a healthy dose of TV or some cellphone games to round off the day, we are all spending most of our days looking at a screen. We are definitely seeing an increasing number of patients suffering with symptoms related to prolonged exposure to these screens. While most of us take great care to wear sunglasses to protect our eyes from the ultraviolet (UV) light and blue light in sunlight, very few understand the risks – or take any precaution – against the effects of blue light from screens,” Naudé says. He explains that digital devices and modern lighting, such as LED lights and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), emit a high level of blue light which is harmful to eyes. While UV light affects the front of the eye and forms cataracts, blue light causes damage to the back of the eye and increases the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and permanent vision loss. As the effects of screen time – and the resulting exposure to blue light – have started to take its toll on people’s eyes, the terms “computer vision syndrome” (CVS) or “digital eye strain” have been bandied about more frequently. “Oftentimes, people don’t even link the symptoms or discomfort they are experiencing to the prolonged time they spend staring at screens. It’s important that people start to understand the effects of exposure to blue light from screens, as well as know how to recognise the possible symptoms of digital eye strain,” Naudé says. According to SEIKO Vision, possible signs of digital eye strain include: • Headaches towards the front of the head and around the eyes. • Sore and tired eyes. • Body fatigue, feeling tired and wanting to close your eyes. • Vision fluctuation, which occurs when the muscles in the eyes become so used to focusing on a digital device that they can’t relax when they look at something else. • Sensitivity to light. • Poor night vision, which results from eye muscles being overstressed from constantly trying to focus on light sources and digital devices. • Dry, red eyes. • Itchy eyes that you need to rub frequently.

86/

INDWE

• Reduced concentration. As most of the symptoms of digital eye strain are uncomfortable, it causes distraction. To avoid digital eye strain, Naudé recommends that people: keep their screens at least 50 to 70 cm away from their eyes; use an anti-glare screen to prevent glare; avoid excessively bright outdoor or indoor light; and zoom into pages to increase the font size. “It is good to keep exercising your eyes by moving your eyes side to side, up and down and in a circle. Also, every 20 minutes try to take a break from staring at the screen, blink your eyes ten times, and then focus on something else that is some distance away for a few seconds. You can also wear glasses with fatiguereducing lenses. These provide what is called ‘accommodative support’, beyond that provided by traditional, singlevision lenses. Accommodative support from the likes of blue-light support lenses is literally energy

for your eyes. They ensure more focused vision in all directions and distances to prevent fatigue and strain.” He concludes by saying that people shouldn’t ignore unpleasant symptoms such as burning and itchy eyes, redness or vision fluctuations. “If your eyes are feeling sore and fatigued, and you are battling to focus, get them checked out. Regular eye exams will help to identify issues before they become major problems. If your symptoms are because of digital eye strain, you can take steps to protect your eyes and avoid permanent damage.” For more information on your nearest Dynamic Vision optometrist, visit dynamicvisionsa.co.za or have a look at the Dynamicvisionsa Facebook page for tips.

LIFTING AS HE RISES Changemaker Bonang Mohale

Aspiration, responsibility and a restless energy are some of the traits that Bonang Mohale, former Chairman of Shell South Africa Energy Ltd and newly appointed CEO of Business Leadership South Africa, wants to see in innovators. Mohale will be one of four “Backers” in Cell C’s new online reality show, Hangman, helping to decide who will walk away with R1 million and a chance to let their innovation take flight.

Mohale is widely viewed as one of the most respected leaders in corporate South Africa, and his story is one of selfdetermination, hard work and ambition. Mohale grew up in Katlehong on Gauteng’s East Rand during the apartheid years. Despite his humble beginnings, Mohale says he owes a good start in life to “probably the best township school under apartheid at that time” where the teachers had a real passion to educate their learners. “We had a sense of self-responsibility, of fervour, of aspiration to aspire for better, and the restlessness to be better tomorrow than today,” says Mohale. And this is what he bases his Hangman criteria on. Mohale initially wanted to become a medical doctor and applied at Wits University so, as he puts it, “I could compete with white students.” But his heart was in the upliftment of the thousands of underprivileged and disadvantaged young South Africans, and thus he moved to a career in management. “I went and worked for a pharmaceutical company and became a professional sales representative. To leave medicine was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life,” Mohale says. He progressed through various positions and in 1996, he secured a spot at OTIS – the world’s largest and oldest elevator company. “So here I am, a boy from Katlehong, managing the world’s biggest and oldest elevator company, present in 223 countries and employing 210,000 people. Black lift mechanics at that time didn’t exist, so we hired good candidates and gave them a four-year apprenticeship. There was initial resistance. There was one client who originally did not like black people servicing his lifts, so I sent him eight black women who were excellent, and ever since then he’s become one of my greatest friends. He experienced first-hand that when people are well trained, they apply themselves and are ambitious and conscious of the opportunity that they have, which makes them very hard working.” After a stint at OTIS, Mohale then moved to Sanlam before being appointed at Shell. Mohale admits that he has always been an activist, and even today he looks at the system and wants to take it on to improve the quality of lives of most South Africans and to be the champion of the change that he wants to see. Poverty, racism, gender inequality, LGBTI discrimination – these are all issues that he wants to tackle.

Hangman backers Quinton van der Burgh and Bonang Mohale with host Maps Maponyane “Transformation is more than just breaking with the past. It’s about creating a future that bears no resemblance to that which replaces it. I’ve always found transformation to be profound, uprooting something and replacing it with something that is better and that is for the benefit of the majority of the population.” Mohale has a strong passion for innovation and entrepreneurship. “I take this notion of entrepreneurship seriously. Small and medium enterprises create jobs.

In South Africa, we have a problem because we have more people on social grants than those who are employed, so the maths doesn’t add up. Five percent of our people are responsible for our tax revenue. It’s an unsustainable system and it needs to be helped. “A show like Hangman allows us to focus on people who are passionate about starting their own businesses and helping them transform themselves from being employees to being employers. This helps

to create jobs. That’s why I wanted to get involved – to see whether we can plant the seed and start a chain reaction. Let’s think, lets innovate, let’s take risks.” So how does he want to be remembered? “I want to be remembered as a professional and effective businessman who produced good results. I also want to be remembered as a person who took time for his community because we want to lift as we rise, and lastly as someone

who was at peace in his own skin and not trying to be anything that he’s not.” Hangman Hangman – a unique fast-paced online reality show which aims to uncover South Africa’s greatest innovator – starts streaming online from 9th October and will run until 11th December. The stakes are high in this revolutionary new programme with R1 million in prize money

SAVE NOW TRAVEL LATER Everyone loves to travel. But an experience of a week or two can translate into months or even years of credit card debt. There is, however, another way to head offshore. Andrew Katzwinkel’s FOMO Travel offers a “save now, travel later” option that kills credit and the regret that comes from paying off debt.

holiday. When payment has been made in full, FOMO Travel pays the supplier and issues documentation. He understands that sometimes life gets in the way, so FOMO has lenient cancellation terms. “Unfortunately the deposit is usually non-refundable, as we have to pay that over to the supplier in order to lock in the accommodation. But depending on advance notice, one can cancel or change up to 12 weeks prior to departure.” FOMO Travel was launched in November 2016, after a year of research and establishing relationships with affiliates in the industry, such as hotel groups, tour groups and other travel agents. The response, Katzwinkel says, was “overwhelming” and the company has had to scale fast. In March, FOMO joined the Singer Group, forming a partnership with Embassy Travel and Amazing Holidays. Through this partnership, Katzwinkel says that FOMO can offer world-class service at competitive prices.

Katzwinkel says that 12,000 people have already signed up to the service and FOMO Travel processed 100 bookings in the first six months of business. (A booking could be a family or a group.) In a market burdened with debt, FOMO Travel, a service that teaches people to save for luxuries, is just the ticket. CRYPTOCURRENCIES

People travel for different reasons. Some believe it “broadens the mind”. Others want to get away from it all. But the fly-now-pay-later approach can turn the experience sour, says FOMO Travel founder, Andrew Katzwinkel. The tourism entrepreneur knows all about travel debt – it is the reason he’s pioneered a savenow-and-travel-later solution. “I had the personal pain point,” Katzwinkel says. “I couldn’t afford a holiday, so I put it on credit. I loved the holiday, but returned under a dark cloud. With the salary I was getting, it took over a year and a half to pay back the debt. I was paying hectic interest and had to say ‘no’ to a lot of other great experiences.” Katzwinkel adds that he spent a long time kicking himself for not saving for the trip ahead of time. FOMO stands for “fear of missing out”, an emotion that many people who’ve had travel debt – like Katzwinkel – can relate to. He admits that he finds it difficult to save. “There is so much I like to spend my money on.” After researching the travel market, Katzwinkel came up with the idea of a service that encourages saving and rewards the saving with travel. Users sign up to FOMO Travel and enter into a payment plan before embarking on a desired journey. It is basically a travel lay-by system. “Travel must be paid for upfront,” Katzwinkel says, and points to the problem with credit. “Why should you start paying interest on something before you even go on your travels? Sometimes more than nine months before?” Tourism and travel is one of the world’s largest industries, according to global statistics portal Statista, which calculates that the industry contributed over $7.6 trillion to the global economy in 2016. “The market is huge – from 18-year-olds to pensioners. Although 18- to 24-yearolds can’t always travel on credit, it’s great for them to go abroad. It exposes the youth to different cultures and is an important development phase for young individuals,” Katzwinkel adds. “A FOMO Travel customer commits to paying a certain amount on a monthly basis. As the instalments are paid in, the money is put in an escrow account, which is secure and audited. You lock in the holiday today, and commit to the payments over a period,” he says. Katzwinkel adds that FOMO Travel basically helps travellers create an advance payment plan for a debt-free

CAPTURING THE IMAGINATION Having sold more than 6,500 of the increasingly popular Renault Captur since its launch in our country in 2015, this crossover ticks all the right boxes on customers’ demand lists. It’s compact, attractively styled with dollops of French flair to set it apart from the crowd, economical and, best of all, probably one of the very best value-for-money buys currently available.

CUTE EXTERIOR Featuring a redesigned upper grille with some fancy chromed edging, full LED lights, and C-shaped daytime running lights, the latest Captur also offers unusual but striking two-tone colour schemes in the Dynamique model. Raised ground clearance now stands at 170 mm, and the seating position has been elevated, while the front and rear bumpers are fully protected by skid plates. THE CABIN AND MUST-HAVE GOODIES The interior is warm and welcoming with supportive seats (heating optional but standard on the Dynamique), lots of storage options and a soft-touch dashboard, as well as a leather-covered steering wheel. Rear park sensors, electric windows, auto headlamps with auto windscreen wipers, as well as cruise control and cornering headlamps make life that much easier. Dynamique models feature a useful integrated medianav touchscreen tablet, which I found to be particularly useful and accurate when navigating in the sticks. Parents with young children will appreciate the easily removable seat covers when these need to pay a visit to the washing machine.

INDWE

THE POWER Three turbo engines are on offer, starting with the 66 kW three-cylinder (898 cc) which was surprisingly nippy and able to cruise all day at 120 km/h, while sipping fuel at a rate of 5.4 l/100 km. The other petrol version on offer, the 1.2-litre four-cylinder, develops an effective 88 kW, and shares identical fuel consumption figures with its threecylinder sibling. The best kept secret, however, is the 1.5 turbodiesel which, although only rated at 66 kW, nevertheless produces 220 Nm of torque, has terrific acceleration for its size, and sips fuel at a miserly 3.6 l/100 km (claimed). Buyers may choose between either six-speed manual or six-speed automatic EDC gearboxes. THE RIDE Traditionally, French cars have supple and comfortable suspension setups, and the new Captur, whether in Blaze or Dynamique configuration, is a wellbuilt vehicle which the importers were confident for the media to experience on some rather rough gravel roads. The Spanish-built cars remained rattle-free and completely dustproof – another major advantage for those living in rural areas.

SAFETY Hill Start Assist on all models may be regarded as a safety feature, as will the multiple airbags, Isofix child seat anchor points, as well as anti-whiplash head rests. The Captur’s 5-star EuroNCAP rating is the result of ABS brakes with EBA (emergency brake assist), and an electronic stability programme to avoid possible loss of control on slippery road conditions. FINAL SAY There are very few, if any, vehicles as competitively priced as the new Renault Captur range. I expect them to start selling in vast numbers because of what they offer in terms of safety and comfort features. The warranty – five years/150,000 km – as well as the threeyear/45,000 km service plan makes the purchase of the Captur (any model) a real bargain. With prices starting at R229,900 for the 66 kW Blaze, and R294,900 for the 1.5 turbo diesel, the range is topped out at R309,900 for the 88 kW Dynamique with its super-efficient EDC automatic gearbox. I believe that the Captur range will have a detrimental effect on the sales figures of their Duster cousins.

BATHROOM BLISS Remodelling in Style Looking at the multitude of different bathroom styles currently available, you would be forgiven for thinking that when it comes to decorating, anything goes. But if you take a closer look, you’ll find that the different designs share a common thread – universal design principles that you can apply to your own bathroom, whatever your style choice.

Text: Katlego Sekano, Property24 Images © iStockphoto.com

INDWE /103

RECONFIGURE THE LAYOUT Extra space in cramped bathrooms can be freed up by swapping a separate bath and shower for a two-in-one option, as well as making do with only one basin as opposed to two. You could also look into removing, moving or replacing items such as light fixtures and cabinets. CHOOSE TIMELESS FITTINGS A bathroom with classic features is unaffected by the passage of time or changes in style trends. Sticking to timeless, well-made bathroom items means you won’t have to spend money on new fixtures every few years. Think of quality fittings like standalone or corner bathtubs, subway tiles and nickel fixtures as investment pieces or the backbone of your bathroom. Not only do these items look good now, they’ll retain their appeal for years to come. LIMIT YOUR OPTIONS Cramming too many different materials into one small space could result in a messy and unwelcoming bathroom that nobody wants to use. To avoid falling into this visual clutter trap, limit the number of different materials and finishes you use and scale back on the décor. To do this successfully, use some of the colours, textures and finishes you’ve already used in your home. By repeating the same design elements throughout your bathroom, it adds cohesion to the space while keeping it simple and elegant. INVEST IN STORAGE Something as simple as a vanity

with cabinets and drawers can free up bathroom surfaces. If your bathroom doesn’t have enough room for a freestanding cabinet, you can also look into wall units, shelves, baskets, bins, trays and product organisers. The more storage, the less clutter. SPLURGE A LITTLE Planning a remodelling project is always a balancing act, especially when it comes to the budget. The reality is, to make room in the budget for big ticket items, you’ll have to pinch a few pennies in other areas to make this happen. Fortunately, the bathroom, being one of the smallest rooms in the home, allows you to splurge where it matters most. If you’re unsure about where to spend your money, take inspiration from luxury hotel rooms. Splurge on bath towels. Anything you use on your skin should be made of the best quality you can afford. Luxurious towels may cost you a little more upfront, but unlike cheap towels which tend to wear faster, luxury towels will last for years to come. You also want to spend a little bit more on lighting. Statement light fixtures can take your bathroom design to a whole new level – just remember to use suitable lighting for different zones. You can also create a high-end look in the bathroom by making simple changes like installing a fulllength mirror above your vanity or tiling your bathroom from floor to ceiling. BE A SPORT! Kia Sportage

Taking full advantage of the swing towards SUVs in general, and mid-sized ones in particular, Kia South Africa recently impressed with the introduction of seven new derivatives of the increasingly popular and dramatically attractive Kia Sportage. The launch also saw the introduction of a 1.7-litre turbo diesel which, while only producing a fairly modest 85 kW, adds an impressive 280 Nm of torque for some real pulling power.

Text: Bernard K Hellberg Images Š Kia SA

INDWE /107

IMPRESSIVE RANGE Kia’s strategy cleverly seems to indicate that there should be a Kia Sportage for every taste and budget. Starting with a 2-litre manual petrol version at R370,000, many buyers will be tempted to pay an additional R13,000 for the joy of an automatic gearbox. The 2-litre petrol models (all four of them) are followed by the sole 1.7-litre turbo diesel, which only comes in manual transmission mode, and will be available at R407,000. Still staying with 2-litre petrol versions, but now with several enhancements under the EX banner, there’s an automatic at R430,000 and another automatic version, described as the EX PLUS, at a further R460,000. These versions are followed by two 2-litre turbo diesels, the automatic CRDI EX at R488,000, and the PLUS version at R518,000. The last three models in the line-up have been around for a while, and consist of the 2.4 SX AWD automatic at R558,900, the 2-litre turbo diesel SX AWD automatic at R568,000, and the stunning 1.6-litre turbo GDI GT Line AWD with the equally impressive DCT gearbox at R600,000. BOLD NEW DESIGN The fourth generation Sportage features an even bolder new look courtesy of KIA’s European design studio in Frankfurt, as well as input provided by other design centres in Namyang, Korea, as well as Irvine, California. Visually, the Sportage, extended in length by 40 mm, appears larger than it really is, with higher headlamps and a lower, wider grille. The GT Line models are visually recognisable by their “Ice Cube” LED fog lamps, while the rear end had also received some attention with a smoother tailgate to emphasise width and give the car a more stable appearance. DELIGHTFUL INTERIORS There was a time when Kia interiors did not emit the delightful aroma of high grade leather. Rather, it was the bothersome acidic smell of cheap plastic, which I found offensive. The new interior, with its high-quality cloth or leather (depending on model), is now a pleasant environment with a wide, driver-oriented dashboard, blending metal with soft-touch materials for the kind of perfect fit expected of a quality vehicle. Below the display zone is a control zone which is tilted 10 degrees towards the driver for safe operation, even while

108/ INDWE

on the move. Buyers choosing a GT Line model may also specify sporty add-ons such as a D-shaped steering wheel, highquality piano-black fascia and aluminium alloy pedals. Any interior, however, should be way more than shiny and pretty, and should place the focus on passenger comfort. This the Sportage does with well-shaped seats and decent legroom which, while adequate in the past, now adds another 19 mm for that elusive “limo” feel. The rear seats may be reclined from 23 to 37 degrees for even greater comfort, especially on long-distance trips. Thanks to good design thinking the adjusting levers are now located lower down, enabling adjustment while the doors are closed and the vehicle moving. ENGINES The base engine, the reliable 2-litre petrol version, is completely adequate for most buyers, and makes 114 kW and 192 Nm of torque. Despite being a carry-over from the third generation, this four-cylinder now has variable valve timing, and a lighter, all-aluminium block, as well as improved injectors for better fuel economy. The 2-litre turbo diesel (my personal favourite) is a real powerhouse with 130 kW and 400 Nm of torque – outputs

which should make towing a horsebox or a ski-boat while driving through the front wheels a real pleasure. The 2.4 petrol direct petrol injection engine is new and does duty in the EX AWD model. It produces 135 kW and 237 Nm which, with a six-speed automatic gearbox, turns this model into a longdistance tourer as well as a competent suburban all-rounder. The other engines – the 1.7-litre turbodiesel and the advanced 1.6-litre GT Line petrol version – are all technologically advanced and provide customers with a wide choice. Some would say too wide perhaps, though. FINAL SAY It’s tough out there in what is, arguably, the most competitive market segment. This is the world in which Hyundai’s Tucson plays, where Volkswagen’s superb Tiguan is right at home, while Mitsubishi’s ASX may also be considered. Nissan’s two offerings, X-Trail and Qashqai, may also be regarded as potential rivals, albeit somewhat smaller than the Sportage. Selling some 70 units each month, though, the Kia Sportage is an excellent choice and worthy of consideration as a brilliant and reliable all-rounder amongst this selection of popular SUVs.

Books Must Read

The Golden House By Salman Rushdie When powerful real-estate tycoon Nero Golden immigrates to the States under mysterious circumstances, he and his three adult children assume new identities, taking “Roman” names and moving into a grand mansion in downtown Manhattan. Arriving shortly after the inauguration of Barack Obama, Nero and his sons, each extraordinary in his own right, quickly establish themselves at the apex of New York society. In a new world order of alternative truths, Salman Rushdie has written the ultimate novel about identity, truth, terror and lies. A brilliant, heart-breaking novel that is not only uncannily prescient, but shows one of the world’s greatest storytellers working at the height of his powers.

How Do You Explain That? By Danny Fourie We know that the moon influences the tides, but did you know that during full moon, you always see the same side of it? Or what precisely causes birds not to bump into one another when they swerve while flying in a flock? These facts are part of a huge amount of knowledge about nature, physics and space that the Afrikaans RSG programme Hoe verklaar jy dit? has been sharing for 37 years. This book, translated from the original, bestselling Afrikaans version, contains a selection from the hundreds of questions curious listeners have been asking the experts to answer in order to make the world a little less strange – because not all knowledge is obvious.

Tears in My Hands By Stan Montsho Sechaba’s journey is one of trial and tribulations. Determined to become the man his family never had, he becomes a true confirmation of the biblical verse that, “If you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you will fear no evil, for you are with God; His rod and staff will comfort you.” He walks day and night into the unknown with only hope tucked tight in the pockets of his tattered trousers. Tears in my Hands is a hypnotic, gripping and rousing narrative that many South Africans – particularly those living in rural areas – can identify with. It is a story of loss, courage, survival, forbidden love, and perseverance in the face of poverty and a ruthless system.

Otlotleng Moralo Cabin Crew Length of Service With SA Express: Eleven months

Tell us more about yourself: I’m a humble guy, and usually funny once you get to know me. I’m also a House music DJ in my spare time and am all about making people dance. What is your favourite part of your job? Meeting new people from different parts of the world and hearing their stories. What do you find most challenging about your job? Being on standby. What do you like about working for SA Express? The flexible working hours we have and the colleagues I work with – they really make coming to work so easy. What would people find surprising about your job? I’ve had people asking me: “How’s the jet lag?” But we never get jet lagged. Have you ever had any funny incidents or encounters on-board? Yes, when I was making an announcement I accidentally told passengers who were on a Bloemfontein flight that the flight was going to Richards Bay. Everyone started to panic thinking that they were on the wrong flight. Luckily it was 1stApril so everyone thought it was an April fool’s joke!

Special services Special Meals Passengers with special dietary requirements are provided for through the following special meals: kosher, halal, Muslim, Hindu, low-fat and vegetarian meals. Orders for special meals should be placed at the time of making flight reservations. The airline requires a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to departure in order to assist with confirmation of requests. Only available on selected flights. Passengers requiring special attention Requirements for unaccompanied minors (passengers under the age of 12 years) or passengers requiring wheelchairs should be stated at the time of making the reservation. Owing to the size of the cabins on our aircraft types, the airline is not in a position to carry stretcher passengers or incubators. Cabin baggage SA Express will accept one piece of cabin baggage not exceeding a total dimension of 115cm and 7kg in weight. For safety reasons, cabin baggage must fit into approved stowage spaces: either the overhead luggage bin or under the seat. Owing to limited storage space in the aircraft cabin, cabin baggage may be placed in the Skycheck at the aircraft for hold stowage. Skycheck This is the airline’s special hand-luggage facility that assists with in-flight comfort, speedy boarding and disembarking. When boarding one of our flights, simply place any hand luggage that will not be required during the flight on to the Skycheck

cart at the boarding steps of the aircraft. Your hand luggage will be waiting for you as you disembark from the aircraft at your destination. Baggage liability Valuable items such as cameras and accessories, computers – including laptops and notebooks – mobile telephones, perfumes, aftershaves, colognes, legal and company documents and legal tender – including cash, credit cards and cheques – bullion, leather jackets, all types of jewellery and any other items with a value in excess of R400 must be removed from either checked-in or Skycheck baggage as the airline is not liable for loss or damage to these items. In addition to building on our motto to express excellence and consistently striving to provide the best service, we know that “you” is the most important word in our airline. SA Express proudly launched its new brand on 2 December 2009 at OR Tambo International Airport. The new brand is set to ensure that it’s distinctive and positioned to build awareness and affinity in the domestic and regional markets. The new proposition “We Fly for You” is set to position SA Express as a premier intra-regional African brand. The main objective of the re-brand is to ensure that SA Express is distinctive yet still aligned to the country’s mainline carrier. SA Express’s unique positioning as an airline that

provides a bespoke, personalised travel experience was the rationale behind the proposition “We Fly for You”. The new brand mark is in line with the symbol and colours of the national flag, encouraging national pride. The new brand will be applied to all brand touch-points throughout the operation as well as the staff uniform. Awards SA Express has won the AFRAA Regional Airline of the Year Award at the end of 2009, and the Allied and Aviation Business Corporate Award. Our airline was also the recipient of the Annual Airline Reliability Award from Bombardier at the end of 2007. Other previous awards include the International Star Quality Award, which indicates our commitment to service excellence, while our prominence as one of the top 500 best managed companies is proof of our success as a business. Onboard service The airline’s onboard service is unique and offers passengers a variety of meals or snacks. The airline pioneered its unique meal-box concept, and meal choices are frequently updated and designed using balanced food criteria: appearance, taste and nutritional value. Passengers can also enjoy a wine and malt service on specified flights as well as refreshments on all flights. Light snacks will be served on selected flights. Our customers can expect a safe, comfortable, quality air-travel experience, with the added benefits of frequency, reliability, on-time departures and unmatched value for money.

We fly for you About us SA Express is a domestic and regional, passenger and cargo carrier which was established on 24th April 1994. SA Express prides itself in aiming to offer incomparable service standards. In addition to building on our motto to express excellence and consistently striving to provide the best service, we know that “you” is the most important word in our airline. With our consistent and seamless service, our customers can be assured of stellar customer service that will exceed their expectations. Vision To be a sustainable world-class regional airline with an extensive footprint in Africa. Purpose A sustainable, integrated regional airline connecting secondary and main airports.

Passenger Letters Good day, SA Express As a fairly regular flyer it is indeed a pity that my business does not take me more frequently to destinations that are serviced by SA Express. Once a quarter I travel from Port Elizabeth to Durban, and I have to tell you that these four trips annually are the highlight of my travel for the year. You may ask why this is. Well, it’s simple. The professional flight crew and highly competent and friendly cabin attendants I encountered on my most recent flight on SA Express once again confirmed my feelings that operating smaller aircraft with a smaller, more focussed crew provides a far more personal experience for the passenger. In fact, it feels like you are on your own charter jet! The CEO’s letter in the August edition of Indwe, titled “Good Customer Service is Good Business”, about sums it up. Here, Mr Xaba talks about “satisfaction being top priority” and about “getting back to basics in daily operations”. Satisfaction is multi-faceted, and extends from the minute one boards the aircraft and receives the welcome smile and assistance to your seat, to the minute you disembark and once gain receive the greeting, “Goodbye and enjoy your day.” So many things can go wrong between these two points in time, but by simply doing the basics right as mentioned by the Acting CEO, SA Express Flight Crew and Cabin Staff most certainly, from my point of view, excel time and time again. So, Mr Xaba, rest assured, your staff are on the right track and support your drive for operational excellence, as well as repositioning of the airline. Wishing you further success, and keep up the good work. Thank you and kind regards, Stan Bezuidenhout Congratulations to Stan Bezuidenhout who wrote our winning letter this month, and walks away with a 55 cm Samsonite Cosmolite suitcase valued at R6,495. Good day I would like to compliment your ground staff and, in particular, your flight attendant Shouness on two occasions recently. The first, the evening flight from Johannesburg to Richards Bay, was delayed by four hours. Although the ground staff explained about the delay, a group of agitated passengers demanded to speak to the airline manager. The two ground staff handled the situation effectively and efficiently with their polite and professional approach and speedily pacified the agitated passengers – in fact, they were even on friendly terms by the end. My most recent – and 50th – flight with SA Express was made even special by the smiling, swift, passionate, proactive and exemplary service provided by your flight attendant Shouness throughout the flight. The ground staff and cabin crew are the two direct contacts with the airline’s customers and their actions can therefore result in either dissatisfied or delighted customers. In his CEO letter in the August edition of Indwe, Mr Xaba emphasised: “Good customer service is good business.” These two outstanding actions by your staff prove that this customer service not only exists in theory, but is also practised by SA Express professionally and personally. I am looking forward to flying again with my favourite SA Express soon. With Best Regards, Subramanian Saravanan
