+ Car show to rumble onto Ranch Main St.

The Lakewood Ranch Town Hall Operations Department is replacing old irrigation controllers with new technology.

It’s a car lover’s dream Valentine’s Day gift. Muscle cars, imports and, of course, classic autos will rumble into Lakewood Ranch for a Car Show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 12, on Lakewood Ranch Main Street. Ed’s Tavern is hosting the event, which also will feature live music, food and more. For more information, visit edstavernlwr.com.

Bob and Peggy Donaldson say they don’t yet have any specific plans for Valentine’s Day, but they expect they will stay home and enjoy fresh seafood for dinner.

Bob and Peggy Donaldson + Honor Animal Rescue seeks help Calling all critter-lovers: Here is your chance to help. Honor Animal Rescue will host a volunteer recruitment meeting at 6 p.m. Feb. 13, at the Hampton Inn, 8565 Cooper Creek Blvd., University Park. “We found loving homes for 750 dogs and cats last year, and we’d like to save at least 1,000 this year, but if we don’t get more volunteers, we’ll have to save fewer, rather than more,” said Honor Animal Rescue President Rob Oglesby. Oglesby said that volunteers are needed at Nate’s Place, an adoption and education center at 8435 Cooper Creek Blvd., University Park; at The Ranch, 4951 Lorraine Road, Lakewood Ranch; and at Honor’s satellite adoption center at the PetCo at 131 N. Cattlemen Road, Sarasota. To RSVP for the recruitment event, email volunteer@ honoranimalrescue.org or call 302-0933.

Irrigation upgrades improve efficiency

Nothing reaffirms life and love with such alarming clarity as a near-death experience. And although it happened more than 25 years ago, Lakewood Ranch couple Bob and Peggy Donaldson can recall every minute detail of that day on Lake Erie. In August 1975, the couple had set sail from one marina to another. But once on the water, waves as tall as 8 feet pushed their vessel over. Because of the sheer power of the waves, the Donaldsons could not upright the boat and realized they would exhaust themselves in the fight. They attempted to flag down help but were unsuccessful. Clinging to their overturned boat and fighting

for every minute of life, Bob and Peggy spent time re-evaluating their relationship and priorities in life and eventually tied themselves to the boat, in case they lost consciousness and died. “It was a very scary discussion, but we had to have it,” Peggy says. Nine hours after they capsized, another boat, which was blown offcourse, found them. Both Bob and Peggy were suffering from hypothermia, but Bob told the sailors to take his wife to seek medical attention, if she needed it, and to rescue him later. Fortunately, the men were able to take them both to shore. “He has bought me

Husband-and-wife team Dr. Maria Galimidi and Ilan Kazmirik say they complete each other.

Ilan Kazmirik and Dr. Maria Galimidi Everything happens for a reason. And no couple knows that better than Ilan Kazmirik and Dr. Maria Galimidi. After Ilan and Maria started dating, they learned their families had known each other since the 1940s, when both lived in Alexandria, Egypt. During World War II, the families, both Jewish, fled to escape being deported to Germany. Maria’s father’s family fled to Uruguay, while Ilan’s mother’s family escaped to Brazil. Ilan’s father lost his family in the war and later lived in Germany, Sudan and Israel. He moved to Brazil in the 1960s. Maria’s family im-

migrated to the United States in 1981 to New Jersey and then to Miami in 1989. Ilan’s family emigrated from Brazil to Miami in 1987. While Ilan attended a local public high school, Maria attended a Jewish school, at which Ilan’s sister and Maria’s mother became friends. However, it wasn’t until their first year of college at Florida International University that Ilan and Maria met. Ilan was studying business, while Maria was preparing for a career in medicine. The two dated briefly before deciding to part ways.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Lakewood Ranch residents can expect to see improvements in commonarea irrigation and landscaping, as the Lakewood Ranch Town Hall Operations Department continues its efforts to update Lakewood Ranch’s irrigation system. Town Hall staff members are working to replace old irrigation controllers and valves with newer equipment that will allow the district to reduce overall water usage, make sidewalks more usable during evening hours, and reduce the amount of manual labor required for managing water, including programming and scheduling. “System improvements will conserve water, save money and decrease watering during peak traffic hours,” Lakewood Ranch Town Hall Operations Director Ryan Heise said. “Each of our (community development) district boards has done a great job in

Lakewood Ranch Main Street Property Manager Julia DeCastro said the plaza is at 94% capacity.

Retail Resurgence With several new businesses opening, both Lakewood Ranch Main Street and San Marco Plaza have reported their highest occupancy levels ever. LAKEWOOD RANCH — As patrons saunter along the sidewalk of Lakewood Ranch Main Street, Julia DeCastro has to smile. The plaza’s occupancy rate is as high as it’s ever been, at more than 94% overall, when including incoming tenants. “We’re seeing a resurgence in the market,” said DeCastro, who manages the property with Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty. “Hopefully, it’s a sign of the economy — that people are getting confident.” Within just a few months, the plaza, which already has seen the addition of seven tenants since fall 2011, will see openings for women’s retailer SOMA Intimates, American Shore Trading Co. and eateries such as Fast n Fresh and Pinchers Crab Shack. Loreleis at Lakewood Ranch, a women’s fashion retailer, opened Feb. 1. “There are three (retail) spaces left,” DeCastro said, noting the former 24,000-square-foot Good Earth space was subdivided into five — four of which already have been filled. “Office has been harder to come back — slower than retail. Just recently that began picking up, too.” Although Main Street no longer has an anchor tenant as originally envisioned since the loss of Good Earth, DeCastro said the change has been a boost to the plaza overall. Establishments such as The Polo Grill and Bar and McAllisters Grill and Tavern are serving as anchors, and the new businesses opening also are drawing more people to the plaza. “Now (patrons) have five choices,” DeCastro said of dividing the Good Earth space. “It creates more of the environment we’re trying to create. Walk around while you eat ice cream (and stop at the shops). From the center’s standpoint, and it being a mixed-use lifestyle center, it makes more sense. We’re providing more options for people. “The mix is good,” she said. “We’re getting three more retails stores, and that’s something we needed.” DeCastro said she’s not in a hurry to lease the remaining Good Earth space, wanting to secure the perfect tenant for the location. A high-end butcher shop may be a good fit, since the Viking Culinary Center, located just down the street, is gaining popularity, she said. Across Lakewood Ranch Boule-

Realtor Dave Neff said San Marco Plaza has enjoyed an increase in foot traffic in recent months.

There, in a plaza where all retail units are individually owned rather than leased, occupancy levels, when including all recent and pending sales, have reached more than 80% — also an all-time high. At one time, while banks were waiting to foreclose on at least 15 units, San Marco’s existing business owners — about 38% — were paying

all of the plaza’s operating expenses. “We’re turning the corner; we’ve turned the corner,” said Realtor Dave Neff, of JS Realty, who has focused on revitalizing San Marco Plaza. “We’ve got more traffic (here) than we’ve ever seen. It’s coming to life.” Since the third quarter of 2011, businesses such as the Yellow Strawberry Hair & Makeup Salon and Skybox Asset Management have opened in San Marco. Sashay Dance Club and Venicebased Montgomery’s CarpetsPlus, together occupying about 5,000 square feet of space, are expected to open in the coming days and weeks. “It’s a perfect store,” Montgomery’s owner Vern Montgomery said, noting this second location will be a showroom. “Interest rates are at an all-time low on commercial property; they’re just as low as home rates. “It’s a total reawakening of this plaza,” he said. “We’ve already done over the years a couple hundred projects in Lakewood Ranch. We’re looking forward to (being here). We think we have business waiting in the wings.” Neff said has possible buyers on two units, and pending sales on another two units, including the former Dagwood’s space. If all goes through, the plaza would have only three more units remaining, plus its 8,500-square-foot anchor space originally designed to hold the Golden Apple Dinner Theater. Girl Scouts improve Ranch animal safety Lakewood Ranch Town Hall leaders will install wildlife-crossing signs this week, at the suggestion of members of Girl Scout Troop 740. LAKEWOOD RANCH — Nearly every morning Willis Elementary School student Marissa Boccarossa rides along Hidden River Trail to school each day, she sees deer quietly grazing beside the roadway. In recent months, especially, keeping the deer and other animals safe has become a top priority for Boccarossa and her three friends — Emily LaPlaca, Anne Robinson and Anissa Sanchez — all members of Girl Scout Troop 740. The girls last month sent a letter to Lakewood Ranch Town Hall asking for two wildlife crossing signs to be installed along the roadway. Town Hall officials agreed. The signs the girls requested should be installed sometime this week. “When Town Hall received the request from Troop 740 regarding wildlife signage in Hidden River Trail, it immediately resonated with staff,” Town Hall’s Executive Director Eva Rey said. “Residents often comment on the majestic wildlife that can be seen in this area, but they are also concerned for animal safety due to the traffic and the curvatures of the road.” Rey said Town Hall staff coordinated the request with Manatee County to obtain the approved signage. “I am thrilled that these

THE REQUEST

young ladies were able to learn a very important civics lesson as a result of their project, and I hope that they continue to interact with their local government on future issues and requests,” Rey said. “Sometimes, even the smallest voice can make a difference.” The girls said they couldn’t be more excited that their idea is coming to fruition and that it will help keep the animals safe. “We were jumping up and down,” said Sanchez of hearing the news the signs would be installed. “It feels good (to help). Everybody gets to see (the signs) and will slow down.” Boccarossa agreed. “We see deer there almost every day,” she said. “We saw an otter, too. We wanted to help the community in someway.” Girl Scout Troop 740 leader Jolene LaPlaca said the girls have been working on the project for about six months, first looking around the community to identify a service project and then working together to craft the letter to Town Hall. The project, she added, is the girls’ last step in achieving the Girl Scouts’ coveted Bronze Award, considered a “leadership adventure” and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. Contact Pam Eubanks at peubanks@yourobserver.com.

An excerpt from the letter Girl Scout Troop 740 members wrote to Town Hall: “Animals are running all over the place on Hidden River Trail. The animals we see are deer, otters, turtles, birds, gators, squirrels, sand hill cranes and more. The problem is that people don’t watch where they’re going and the road is very twisty. We need to put up wildlife crossing signs. We have seen squirrels and turtles hit by cars and have had some close encounters with deer as well. We thought we could put up two signs facing opposite directions so everyone will drive cautiously. The signs can be designed to fit in to the beautiful landscape on the Trail. We hope you feel the same way we do after reading this letter.”

+ Fire commissioner arrested for molestation

+ Court upholds teacher suspension

An East County man serving as a commissioner for the Southern Manatee Fire & Rescue District has been arrested on charges of molesting several children over the last seven years and suspended from public office. Mark D. Ruben, 45, was arrested Jan. 26 on eight charges of sexual battery and lewd or lascivious molestation. Gov. Rick Scott issued an executive order Jan. 19 suspending Ruben from public office, after the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office conducted an initial investigation and forwarded its findings to the State Attorney’s Office. The State Attorney’s Office conducted its own investigation and made the arrest. A report states the children told investigators they were encouraged to engage with sexual activity with each other and were subjected to sex acts at various locations. Ruben denied the charges, and one of the children, while being interviewed by investigators, recanted the story. A report states the abuse started in 2005 and occurred as recently as July 2011.

The Second District Court of Appeals has upheld the Manatee County School Board’s decision to suspend a Braden River High School teacher for inappropriately using Facebook. Braden River teacher Charles Willis formally was suspended in May for inappropriately using Facebook. Willis had “friended” more than 100 students on the social-networking site, to which he had posted profanity and sexually lewd images, according to the district. Willis in late August appealed the School Board’s decision. The court on Feb. 1, however, affirmed the School Board’s decision to suspend Willis.

+ Armed suspect invades home on Pope Road Manatee County Sheriff’s Office detectives are looking for a man who invaded a home by force Feb. 5, in the 2400 block of Pope Road. A Sheriff’s Office report states a male suspect, armed with a weapon, forced

himself inside an occupied residence at around 9 p.m. Once inside, he stole the victim’s personal property before fleeing the area. Public Information Officer Dave Bristow said the investigation is ongoing. “It could have been a burglary, where the (suspect) thought (the home) was unoccupied,” Bristow said. “At this point, though, we’re not sure.” Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 747-3011 or Crime Stoppers at (866) 634-8477.

+ County starts traffic signal re-timing project Manatee County officials are asking drivers to use extra caution on major thoroughfares in the coming months as traffic signals are adjusted and retimed. The effort is the first major implementation of the Advanced Traffic Management System, which will allow more than 230 traffic signals in Manatee County to be better coordinated with each other. Although drivers eventually can expect to see improved efficiency of signals, they will not see a continuous line of

Partick Rodricks, Brian Lindman, Lori Russo, Ross Russo and Josephine Rodricks will work to bring a more healthy lifestyle to Karnataka, India. While in India, Russo will meet with leaders in the Rotary Club of Bangalore Vijayanagar to discuss project details, forming a committee for the project and also working to determine what type of project will be completed, what materials will be used and where it will be installed, he said. Russo is continuing to lobby for financial support from Rotary clubs throughout Southwest Florida for the cause. A member of Christ Presbyterian Church, Russo traveled India

in May 2010, after church leaders encouraged him to help with a leadership-training conference there. “I work in construction,” Russo said. “I always figured I would do a mission trip somewhere local — the Caribbean or South America — and I would use my profession. “But I found myself on a plane ride to India, of all places, and the purpose of our trip was to build church leadership,” he said. “It changed my life.” During the conference, Russo

MANATEE COUNTY — Members of the Rotary Club of East Manatee may be few in number, but the group is gearing up to make a big impact halfway around the world. The Rotary Club is embarking on its first international project in Karnataka, India, where it is working to provide a clean source of water for the people, and also to educate them about basic hygiene. “The plan is a three-year commitment,” the group’s president, Ross Russo, said, adding the effort will help prevent the spread of disease in the community. “This year is to fact-find and connect with Rotarians in Bangalore and find areas in which to work. We need to make sure the right people are on board.” Russo left Feb. 2 for a two-week stint in India, where he will be meeting with fellow Rotarians and laying the foundation for his club’s project. “The program is a sustainable program,” Russo said. “What I saw in India (when I went in 2010) was the immediate and practical help of installing a well. I watched as the water truck rolled into the village and filled the tank with dirty, nasty water and women putting disease-filled water LBK - 2010 - K(in their conLBK - 2010 - K tainers). “Without realizing what I was seeing, it made an impact,” he said.

When a local Rotary raises $1, the national organization will match $1 for service projects, and Rotary International will match the $2, making a local Rotary’s $1 turn into $4 for an international project. Russo’s thoughts immediately returned to India, and how clean water and improved hygiene could drastically reduce disease and poor health in rural areas. Specifically, he remembered a child-dedication ceremony he attended for a 1-year-old girl. “Her name was Blossom Joy,” Russo said of the child, noting the child mortality rate in India is so high children are not named until they reach 1 year old. “She was being dedicated and received her name that day.” Russo knew his club could help. With the support of his members and several other clubs, Russo last summer traveled to more Rotary meetings throughout Southwest Florida to pitch the idea and help raise more funds for the project. During the next six months, Russo will continue trying to raise financial support for the project, and also will begin working with the Rotary Club of Bangalore to finalize project details. Installation of the well, as well as education on hygiene, will be handled by members of the Bangalore Rotary, Russo said. SINGING SENSATION

by Pam Eubanks | News Editor

Haile student releases song, music video East County resident Jordan Boyer, a longtime performer, is working toward a professional singing career with the release of her new song and music video, ‘Goodbye Love.’ MANATEE COUNTY — Haile Middle School student Jordan Boyer has never been one to shy away from the spotlight. But even for her, the events of the last few months, have been nearly blinding. Not only has the 14-year-old recorded her first original song, “Goodbye Love,” but also she has her first professional music video to go with it. “It blows my mind,” Boyer said. “It was crazy. I will never forget that feeling (of hearing the song and seeing the video for the first time).” Boyer said she’s loved music and acting ever since she can remember and recalls singing around the house at just 4 years old and joining the Spotlight Kids Theater Troupe at age 7. “I fell in love with it,” Boyer said of musical theater. “It was great. (In my first show) I played the guy that killed himself.” Since then, Boyer has played characters such as the rabbit in “Alice in Wonderland,” and Louisa in “The Sound of Music, among others. “I like theater, because you can play different characters — a snotty rich kid or a nerdy dork,” Boyer said. “Singing is two-in-one. You get to act, while you show off your voice.”

But Boyer’s theatrical ambitions took a more musical note last year after sending an audition tape to and being picked up by manager Christian Stolfe. Boyer headed to Atlanta to record her original song, “Goodbye Love,” last fall. And with the release of her first music video on websites such as YouTube and Vimeo last month, Boyer still is reeling in excitement, especially since so many of her friends were able to join in the experience with her. “They wanted to use a school, and all my friends were here (at Haile),” Boyer said. “It was the perfect place to shoot it.” Boyer’s dad’s house also provided the background for the video’s opening scene, Boyer said.

“I thought it was a lot of fun,” Boyer said of shooting the video. “It was comfortable for me. I know the territory, the location. It was less intimidating (to be with friends, too). Additionally, Boyer met with the vocal coach for Taylor Swift about a month ago and recently began weekly voice lessons with her via Skype. “She’s a lot of fun,” Boyer said. “I feel like she’s my friend. I’ve learned a lot from her (already). I think it’s a big deal she took me (as a client).” Boyer said she has big goals for the year ahead, with plans to record three more original songs and another music video. “We’re going to pitch (the songs) to different record labels and start touring around the country, hopefully,” Boyer said, grinning. “It makes me nervous sometimes, but I’m ready to do it. Let’s go.” To view Boyer’s music video, visit www.YouTube.com and search for “’Goodbye Love’ Jordan Boyer.” Contact Pam Eubanks at peubanks@yourobserver.com. Pam Eubanks

8:11 a.m. — 16600 block of Waterline Road. Information. The complainant purchased a vehicle from an acquaintance in November 2011. The car wasn’t running and required engine work. About a month ago, the complainant had a person named Bruce take the car to his shop in Wauchula to put in a new engine. After a few weeks, Bruce released the vehicle to the suspect, who has been a longtime friend of the complainant. The complainant attempted to get the car back; however, the suspect isn’t accepting her calls. Currently the car is still showing registered to the acquaintance that sold the car to the complainant.

The suspect reportedly entered the store and wanted to buy four $500 Visa gift cards using two $1,000 American Express gift cards. The complainant stated she told him she would only do two $500 gift cards and not four. The suspect stated he gets the gift cards from work, but he exchanges them, because you can use the Visa cards at more places. The suspect showed a Florida driver’s license that matched his identity. The complainant just thought this was suspicious even though the transaction went through without a problem. The complainant called the next closest CVS to make the manager aware of what happened. The manager stated the suspect had just left and done the same thing, exchanging one $1,000 American Express gift card for two $500 Visa gift cards. The clerk who helped him also obtained his driver’s license and wrote down the suspect’s name. He also stated the suspect kept the American Express gift card with

If there were a record playing, the needle would have been pulled off like in the movies. Everyone turned to stare. Then, Chimbos took me into another room with a buffet and ordered me to fill my plate. Afraid, I complied. Every year, the Glendi offers four days of authentic Greek culture and celebration. There’s the food, prepared by restaurateur and Executive Chef Popi Ameres. There’s the performances by the St. Barbara Hellenic Folk Dancers and the live bouzouki music. And then there’s plenty of booths at which patrons can buy Greek groceries to take the culture home with them when they leave. But, none of that would mean anything without St. Barbara’s most important ingredient: love. Glendi organizers have prepared and produced 28 festivals out of the purist of intentions: Raise money for the church and share their culture with the community. in Lakewood Ranch and surrounding areas has been tremendous compared to other parts of the state. Further demonstrative of this is the size of my current State House seat, which is over-populated by 80,000 people. The proposed district I am honored to currently represent will include east Manatee and Sarasota counties; I will no longer represent southern Hillsborough County. Lakewood Ranch will remain as one House legislative district, thanks to the many Lakewood Ranch residents who attended the Sarasota redistricting meeting and spoke publicly about how important it was for our community to remain whole and in one House district. For most in the East County, your congressional district will remain the same, which is currently held by U.S. Rep. Buchanan. However if you live east of Verna Road or in Myakka City, you will be in a large, mostly rural and agricultural district, which stretches

as far east as Okeechobee and as far west as Port Charlotte. If you live south of University Parkway, you will be in the Senate district currently held by Sen. Nancy Detert. If you live north of University Parkway, you will be in an open district currently held by Sen. Mike Bennett. I encourage you to look at the maps located at our website, www.myfloridahouse.gov, to see more of the details. Looking at the newly drawn lines, we can see that a balance was reached and the protections granted under the constitution have been adhered to. The voting districts in our area will change, and the boundary lines have moved. However, the new lines represent you and your input. Whether you stand in line at a new precinct or perhaps remain at your old precinct, know that you are casting a vote in a district that reflects your valuable input and feedback as a concerning constituent. State Rep. Greg Steube represents Florida District 67.

recognizing the need and benefits of funding a program for irrigation enhancements in the common areas.” Heise said the operations team began looking into replacing portions of the irrigation systems in Lakewood Ranch CDDs 1, 2, 4 and 5, when Paul Chetlain, maintenance manager, joined the operations team more than two years ago. At that time, he and Heise immediately began looking at the district’s irrigation control system, because it already was showing signs of failure. “That was a huge priority,” Heise said of making improvements to the system. “If the controllers aren’t functioning properly, not only do you have deteriorating landscape, but you also have residents (who are frustrated with sprinklers running too much, etc.). “We knew we needed to do something different,” he said. “We knew we had so much infrastructure in place, we couldn’t totally abandon our existing system, and we knew we couldn’t do everything at once because of budget limitations.” After researching options and testing pilot products, the operations team decided to convert the district’s Hunter Genesis controllers, which are targeted for the golf course industry, to a Tucor product. The new controllers will provide inputs for environmental sensors and allow more flexibility in programming watering schedules. Additionally, the new technology has a lower hardware footprint, meaning it has fewer parts — about two compared to 19 — that could fail and need replacement. Heise said each time an old Hunter Genesis controller fails, it costs between $57 and $1,267 to repair. “This was weekly,” he said. “We were constantly returning to the controllers and repairing similar components over again, especially during summer lightning events.” Additionally, the CDDs had about 20 to 24 faceplate failures annually, with repairs costing $250 per incident. The districts also are replacing about

Lakewood Ranch Town Hall also is working to solve problems with the community’s irrigation system, because many neighborhoods have experienced problems with water pressure over the years. Ryan Heise, director of operations for Town Hall, said preliminary findings of a study being conducted by irrigation consultant Azad Shah show the Ranch’s infrastructure is sufficient and changes to the watering schedule likely can fix water pressure and other problems. “That’s most likely a source issue,” Heise said. “(Water provider Braden River Utilities) really is the one responsible for determining why they have pressure issues. We’re working with them on that.”

120 Uniks devices, which are manually programmed, individual battery-operated valves used in cul-de-sacs and similar areas, with a product by WaterOptimizer, a subsidiary of Tampa-based King Engineering. The new product uses wireless communication to link each of the valves into a networked system, thus giving Town Hall staff the ability to program all the valves using internet-based software. It also allows for the use of soil moisture sensor inputs so irrigation can automatically turn off during rain events, for example. The Operations department tested the new equipment in Edgewater Pointe and, after seeing success, will begin installations throughout the rest of Edgewater, as well as in portions of CDDs 1, 2, 4 and 5. Each district has budgeted $10,000 toward the improvements in 2012, and Heise said he will recommend the CDDs add more in the Fiscal Year 2013 budget, so improvements to irrigation system can be completed more quickly. Improvements currently are slated to continue over the next several years. Contact Pam Eubanks at peubanks@yourobserver.com.

START OF A NEW LIFE

DONALDSON / FROM PAGE 1A

some beautiful gifts over the years, but nothing he has given me will compare to hearing him offer his very life so that I would be saved,” Peggy says. The Donaldsons still send a Christmas card every year to the man who saved them, thanking him for yet another year together. This Valentine’s Day, the Donaldsons, who have been married for 48 years, will celebrate quietly — likely at home with some fresh seafood for dinner. After all, no box of chocolates or lavish gift could ever compare to what the two already have: each other. “I can’t believe it’s been as long as it has been,” Peggy says, smiling. “It doesn’t seem possible.”

However, that connection never waned. In 2005, they reconnected after Maria saw Ilan’s niece. “It sounds very corny, but when you know, you know,” Maria says of when she realized she wanted to marry Ilan. “For me, it was a quintessential moment of that. Within two dates, I knew (I wanted to marry him). “It was like a domino effect,” she says. “Some people say you have to work at it, but for us, there was none of that. Everything just fell into place. Neither of us had to question ourselves — whether we were meant to be together, or (if this was right).” Ilan agrees. “We were on the same wavelength all the time,” he says. “We liked the same things. We never had an awkward, quiet moment. We complete each other.” The couple married May 13, 2007.

Originally from Buffalo, N.Y., Bob Donaldson was on leave from the U.S. Army, when his relatives told him about a post-high school group at a local church. Peggy and Bob Donaldson When Bob completed his were married May 10, duty and returned home, he 1963. plugged into the group. Young adults there collected pennies for UNICEF and completed other community service projects together. They’d go out to eat together after church each week, as well. “It just kind of evolved … with her very patient and quiet waiting,” Bob says, casting a playful glance at his wife. They both erupt laughing. “Quiet is one thing I’m not,” Peggy says, shaking her head. As the two became more acquainted, Bob got the feeling Peggy was interested in him but never acted on it. She was a bit too tall for him, he’d thought. “I was a marked man, from her version of the story,” Bob adds. Peggy chuckles with her husband and then smiles. “I fell in love with him before I knew him, really,” she says. “I really don’t know why. I think it was how he carried himself, how he spent his time. He had the characteristics I wanted in a husband.” And then one day at a group outing, Bob bought his future wife’s lunch. Their first date was to see the film, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” The couple got engaged in October 1962, after Bob saved up enough money for an emerald-cut engagement ring. The day he bought it, Bob picked Peggy up from choir rehearsal and handed her a paper bag, saying he’d picked up a sample of her favorite perfume. Tired, Peggy thanked him and tossed the bag onto the floorboard of the car — until Bob finally convinced her to pick it up and look inside it. The couple married May 10, 1963. Bob worked hard to provide for his growing family, working first as a metallurgist and gradually working his way up the corporate ladder. Peggy stayed home with their three sons and also found a voice advocating against domestic violence while living in the Detroit area. After receiving training, she helped with a domestic-violence crisis line and also did educational programming at schools to help break the cycle of abuse. The couple moved from Ohio to Longboat Key in 1992 and lived there until 1999, when they moved to Lakewood Ranch.

LOVE LESSONS

The Donaldsons say each year that goes by brings its own joys and challenges, but their love for one another has only grown deeper over time, because they’ve faced each challenge together. “I say to people, ‘You have no idea what those vows mean (when you get married),’” Peggy says. “After you’ve been down (the road), you understand what you say.” Bob agrees. “You really appreciate it — understand the depth of it after time,” Bob says. “The hard part of marriage is working through that stuff (that’s hard). That, to me, makes it more (beautiful). If it were all roses, where would the substance be?” The Donaldsons say it is important, in marriage, to embrace each other’s differences. For example, Bob is organized and methodical and always has “one more question.” Peggy is spontaneous and more romantic in nature. “You have to understand you’re different people and you brought different things into the relationship,” Peggy says. “You need to tolerate, compensate, ignore and trust those characteristics.” Bob agrees. “We complement one another,” he says. “Those skills or strengths — our differences — seem to complete and bring us together. Each of us appreciates those traits in the other.” Contact Pam Eubanks at peubanks@yourobserver.com.

ing with the business side of the practice, while he also works fulltime as the national sales manager for Universal Storage Containers. “We look at it as a challenge,” Maria says. “When one can’t do something, the other one picks up the slack. It’s teamwork.” “We’ve overcome a lot of obstacles together, both at work and (personally),” Ilan adds. “We trust each other.” The couple works non-stop, but both remain committed to keeping each other as a priority. For Valentine’s Day, Ilan and Maria chuckle thinking about what they might do. A short cruise, they say, would be ideal, but may not happen because of work. “We’ll probably have dinner catered to the practice while we’re finishing up work,” Ilan says, laughing. THE EARLY YEARS

Six months after the wedding, the couple moved to Wisconsin for a job opportunity for Maria. “It was hard, because we were separated from our families, and we didn’t know anybody there, but at the same time, we had to grow closer together,” Maria says. “I think every marriage, once you are married and you have the reality of life around you, you have to work on how those things are not going to impact your marriage. If you let them, that’s what starts to build a wall between you. Now, especially, Maria and Ilan value their relationship and their constant support for one another. The couple recently opened their own podiatry practice, Suncoast Food & Ankle, in the East County. Maria is seeing patients at nursing homes and other locations as she builds a clientele. Hoops madness hits early out east The tournament seeds have been announced, and the brackets are set. March Madness may not start for another month, but playoff basketball is already alive and well in the East County. This week, the Braden River, Lakewood Ranch and The Out-of-Door Academy boys JEN basketball BLANCO teams will begin their district tournaments runs, hoping for district championships and regional playoff appearances. It’s the final push of a long and eventful winter season. So, without further ado, let the madness begin. The fourth-seeded Mustangs got the ball rolling Feb. 6, defeating fifth-seeded Dixie Hollins 58-41 in the Class 6A-District 12 quarterfinals. Lakewood could be the most surprising team of the tournament — a possible Cinderella story? Following its district quarterfinal, Lakewood declared it expects district champion. And with the return of 6-foot-6 senior Brian Cobb, who missed the first 22 games of the season after tearing his ACL last summer, the Mustangs may just have the added boost of confidence they need heading into their semifinal game against top-seeded Seminole Osceola Feb. 8. After finishing the regular season 20-4 and setting a school record for wins in a season, Braden River has the potential for a deep postseason run. The Pirates won their first district championship

BRADEN RIVER — Tori Kwiatkowski would have given anything not to let her teammates down — even if it meant having to walk away from the sport she loved at the end of the season. Last May, the Braden River High School senior co-captain suffered a stress fracture in her hip. But rather than taking time off to let it heal, Kwiatkowski re-

turned a week later and tried to put the pain behind her. “I pulled through and returned to cheerleading,” Kwiatkowski said. “I was at a competition, and I fell and started crying. I didn’t let it heal. We needed to practice, and I didn’t want to let down my teammates.” Now nine months later, Kwiatkowski is preparing to help

lead Braden River onto the mat for the last time. On Feb. 11-12, Braden River will compete in the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships at Walt Disney World. It will be the first time in school history that the squad has competed on a national stage. “Last year we got a bid and didn’t have the funding,” Kwiatkowski said. “It was the most

California native Shane Rice has received the Best Playing Pony award three times so far this season and also has been named the Most Valuable Player.

SARASOTA — Polo player Shane Rice was born to ride. Born into a family in which everyone around him — including his parents, aunts and uncles, cousins and siblings — played, it was only fitting that Rice would be thrust into the saddle at a young age. Rice was 4 years old the first time he saddled up and began playing cowboy polo. Three years later, the California native was ready to move on to English polo, which proved to be the perfect learning opportunity. “English polo was easier, because the ball was smaller and lighter,” Rice said. “When I first started, there were hardly any kids around, so I had to become stronger and quicker, because I was surrounded by better players. “I loved it so much,” Rice said. “It was so much better for me. Not only did it give me an advantage, but (also) my family always like a challenge, and I’m a fierce competitor.” Over the years, Rice’s passion for polo intensified. In high school, Rice won a national polo title with his cousin and sister, and it wasn’t long before Rice was focused solely on competing and turning professional. At the time, his main goal was to become a six-goal player, but now Rice, in his third season competing at the Sarasota Polo Club, is more concerned with putting the best horses he can out on the field. “When I first started out, I thought I had to make it to six goals to be happy, but now I always want to bring the best horses I can onto the field,” Rice said. “If we’re winning, I’m happy, and if we’re losing, then I’m talking to the crowd and having

as much fun as possible.” Rice already has seen tremendous success in his first season competing with Ten Oaks. Through the first six matches of the season, Rice has received the Best Playing Pony award three times and also has been named the Most Valuable Player once. But of all the accolades he’s received over the years, this year’s Best Playing Pony awards are the most rewarding. Rice has 13 horses with him here in Sarasota and another six, including his favorite horse, Fifa, who was afraid of a polo ball when he first got her in Texas. “Growing up, I loved the competition with the horses, and now, it’s the satisfaction I get when my hard work pays off on the field,” Rice said. “The Best Playing Pony award — I’ve been very fortunate. For me, it’s a new experience, and it’s joyous and fulfilling. “It’s the best award you could ever win,” Rice said. “To be able to take less (productive) horses and make them better — not only to get along with them but to be effective. It’s the horse and you, and everything comes together for one chukker of that game.” Prior to coming to the Sarasota Polo Club, Rice won the 12-goal polo tournament in Ocala with fellow Sarasota Polo Club player James Miller.

last season and expect nothing less this season. The top-seeded Pirates, who will have home-court advantage throughout the tournament, play host to fifth-seeded Charlotte in a Class 7A-District 11 semifinal Feb. 8. Braden River defeated Charlotte in its two prior meetings this season, including a 20-point victory at home, where the Pirates won eight of nine games this season. If the Pirates focus on playing their game, they should easily cruise into the district championship game Feb. 10 and earn an automatic playoff berth. Finally, second-seeded ODA could be the sleeper of this year’s Class 3A-District 10 tournament. The Thunder only won five games during the regular season, but in a three-team district, anything is possible. ODA opened its tournament Feb. 7, at Cardinal Mooney. The Cougars defeated the Thunder by double-digit margins twice during the regular season. Cardinal Mooney would have been the top-seed, but the FHSAA recently declared leading scorer Antonio Blakeney ineligible and forced the Cougars to forfeit nearly all of their wins. If the Thunder can make it past the Cougars, they’ll face top-seed Bradenton Christian in the district championship Feb. 10. With three East County schools all in the mix for district championships and regional playoff appearances, it’s safe to say winter may linger around for at least another week.

“That started me mentally on a good note and helped me get fresh and ready to go,” Rice said. “I’m just enjoying what I get. You don’t always get to choose whom you play with, and I’m really enjoying whom I’ve been able to play with, which is rare. I’m just taking it one step at a time. “Field One isn’t always there for you, so we’re always working hard to try and get to the big show on Sunday,” Rice said. When he’s not busy playing polo, Rice enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, Nicole Stringer, and playing golf with the Polo Players Golf Association — a group of eight to 12 polo players who play golf together every Monday. PIRATES / FROM PAGE 13A competition of the season. The girls finished third and were one of five teams to earn a bid to the national championships. “I think they were definitely excited,” coach Dana Licata said. “They just wanted a bid, but to get third place also was very nice. UCA picks the number of bids it hands out, so when they said, ‘And fifth place with a bid,’ the girls all screamed. It was a great feeling because they knew they were getting a bid.” “It’s awesome,” senior co-captain Cassidy Geiger said. “It sets the grounds for this school that the cheerleading squad has been to nationals. It’s awesome. It’s hard to explain. I can’t wait.” Braden River will compete against 40 other high schools in

the 1A medium varsity division. The girls will perform their twoand-one-half minute routine in the preliminary competition Feb. 11. From there, the top 19 teams will advance to the semifinals. The top 14 teams will then move onto the finals Feb. 12. “At the beginning of the year, I knew they had the potential to make it this far,” Licata said. “They have all of the components. It was just up to them whether they would perform and make it. “I would be ecstatic if they make it out of preliminaries and into semifinals, which they are definitely capable of,” Licata said. “It’ll be up to how well they execute and the energy level they bring out there.” Most recently, Braden River finished sixth at the FHSAA Compet-

itive Cheerleading State Championships Feb. 3, in Kissimmee. The girls finished 12 points behind state champion Timber Creek, which finished third at last year’s UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships. The girls know the competition will be fierce at the national championships and are focused on doing their best and enjoying the experience while they can. “I just want to go out and have fun,” Kwiatkowski said. “My goal for us is to go out and hit our routine both days,” Geiger said of the competition. “I want us to be able to hit everything and walk off the floor with no regrets and feel like we did the best we could. It’s not just about what place you get.” Contact Jen Blanco at jblanco@ yourobserver.com.

PALMETTO — Lakewood Ranch High girls basketball coach Tina Hadley felt pretty confident heading into the locker room at halftime. With her team only trailing top-seeded Palmetto by nine points, Lakewood’s game plan appeared to be working to some extent. Hoping to slow the game down, Hadley told her players if they focused on boxing out, rebounding and, most importantly, controlling the ball, the game was theirs for the taking. But although the plan sounded good in theory, the Lady Mustangs were unable to account for the Lady Tigers potent fullcourt press. Palmetto forced the fourthseeded Lady Mustangs into 32 turnovers on its way to a 58-40 victory in the Class 6ADistrict 12 semifinals Feb. 1. “We knew … to win the game, we could not afford to turn the ball over,” Hadley said. “I thought we did a great job in the first half with ball management. Second half — I don’t know what happened. They weren’t doing anything different. We just panicked under pressure, and we turned the ball over.” Lakewood (10-14) kept the game close for most of the first half and eventually pulled within a point to open the second quarter. The Lady Mustangs trailed 33-24 heading into the locker room at halftime. But the Lady Tigers (20-2) took control in the third quarter, as the Lady Mustangs made just two baskets. Lakewood sophomore Emily Bulfin scored a layup in the opening seconds of the third quarter and hit a three-pointer late in the period.

Jen Blanco

Lakewood Ranch High senior Gabriella Diaz-Granados scored a team-high 16 points in her final game in a Lady Mustangs uniform.

Palmetto sealed the game in the fourth quarter, as the Lady Tigers went on a 12-0 run in the first two-and-one-half minutes. Senior Gabriella Diaz-Granados finished with a team-high 16 points, and Bulfin added 14 points to lead the way for Lakewood, which played most of the season with only seven players after losing three to injuries. “The season was a good learning experience for the younger girls,” Hadley said. “They have had to grow up fast.” “All season we’ve had the one-two punch,” Hadley said. “I expect a whole lot of people to step up to the plate next year.” Contact Jen Blanco at jblanco@yourobserver.com.

The Out-of-Door Academy boys soccer team saw its season come to an end Jan. 31, with a 4-0 loss to Indian Rocks Christian School in a Class 1A-Region 2 quarterfinal. The District 8 runnerup Thunder (11-5-1), who were coming off a hard-fought 3-0 loss to Saint Stephen’s Jan. 27 in which seven players were injured, were held to just six shots — two of which were on goal. “I don’t think we were ready for this game,” head coach Dave Hawkes said. “We came out flat-footed; and if you don’t warm up properly you’re not

going to win the game. When you’re relying on the same 11 guys — it’s too much.” ODA loses five seniors from this year’s playoff team, including goalkeeper Mark Marcello, who finished with five saves, Daniel Pivonka, Harry Lempriere, Sam Kimmell and Neil Sullivan. “We had a good season,” Hawkes said. “I think a lot of teams didn’t expect us to get this far. They just have to try harder, and if they want to see what it’s like to get further and into the semifinals they’re going to have to step it up.”

DAVE KOSTURA LAKEWOOD RANCH — At nearly any major community event, Edgewater resident Dave Kostura is there with a camera in hand. A longtime photography enthusiast, the retired engineer now spends his days photographing families at Lakewood Ranch Community Activities’ events, editing pictures, playing tennis and more. “I just enjoy the experience of taking pictures of people and seeing their reactions — making memories,” Kostura says. “I am having a great time living in Lakewood Ranch, pursuing my tennis and boating hobbies, and operating my photography and digital imaging business, PhotoGraphic Media.” Kostura grew up in Johnstown, Pa., but ventured to Louisiana to study electrical engineering at Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now called the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. To launch his first real career job, Kostura, in 1964, joined a team of engineers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in working on the Gemini project, a pre-cursor to the Apollo mission that sent men to the moon. There, while working on NASA’s Gemini project, Kostura supervised a group of electronic technicians who installed

From 1966 to 1971, Kostura worked at Bendix Corp. in Baltimore, Md., where he served on the design team for FPS-85 Space Track Radar, which is still in use today. Kostura then spent 30 years at Eglin Air Force base, in Florida’s panhandle, as the chief of

telemetry data processing at Freeman Computer Sciences Laboratory. “During the first Gulf War, we tested smart weaponry,” Kostura says of his time at Eglin. “I ran a data-processing lab that got information from missiles and analyzed it to see it if it was within the manufacturer specifications and hit where it was supposed to hit. “They can drop a bomb from 20 miles away and have

it hit a target and drop into a basement and explode,” he says. “It’s unbelievable what they can do.” Then in 1999, Kostura retired from government work so he and his wife, Nan, could be closer to their children. “Our kids live in Orlando and Lakeland,” Kostura says. “My parents used to live in Miami, and we drove here on vacation in the 1970s and 1980s. We decided to come here (to

the East County area).” Kostura continued working until 2002, transitioning to the private sector upon his move to Florida. Then, Kostura ventured into his own part-time business, PhotoGraphic Media, an event photography and digital imaging company, in 2006. “During the first Gulf War, we tested smart weaponry and I got involved, practical knowledge of digital cameras,” Kostura says. “That transitioned into (an interest in photography). “I’ve always liked to take pictures,” he says. “It was a progression into this.” Although Kostura tries to keep his schedule full with work, he makes sure to carve out time for tennis twice a week. “I schedule everything around that,” Kostura says, noting he got involved in the sport seriously in 2006. “I play doubles. It’s easier on the knees.” The Kosturas also enjoy riding around their neighborhood and visiting St. Armands Circle and the beach — particularly Lido Beach — whenever possible, he says. — Pam Eubanks

UPWC walks red carpet at meeting

Fashion expert Pam Yulke and Oscar hopeful Jan Wallace

Nearly 200 University Park Women’s Club members and their guests had an opportunity to “Walk The Red Carpet” at the group’s annual general meeting, lunch and fashion show Jan. 25, at Michael’s On East. The Hollywood-themed event featured movie-inspired table settings, martinis, champagne and even some members of the paparazzi. After UPWC Presdent Cheryl Kleiman gave her opening remarks, she presented a check for $16,000 to Kristen Theisen, of the Manatee Food Bank. The money was raised at the organization’s Diamond and Crystal Charity Ball. In addition to the check, members donated items and chocolates that will be used to make 250 gift bags, which will be delivered to Meals on Wheels recipients on Valentine’s Day.
