After the Sarasota City Commission voted in March to shut down its $510,000 parking-meter program, Schroeder-Manatee Ranch Inc. purchased all 459 meters to install in Lakewood Ranch.

Kayakers on the Manatee River last week discovered a mysterious Mr. Potato Head statue staring at them as they paddled upstream. The giant replica of the popular toy was complete with what appeared to be removable facial features, the kayakers said. Manatee County officials currently are searching for the statue’s creator.

+ Network considers Ranch for new show Talent scouts for the Bravo network will be in Lakewood Ranch next week to begin casting for a new “Real Housewives” series. According to network sources, “The Real Housewives of Manatee County” will be a suburbanmeets-rural adaptation of the popular reality TV series. Show producers are looking for three country club-type women as well as three from a more rural part of the East County. “We want to see people’s reactions to jeans and cowboy boots at their black-tie galas,” said producer Darren Doughty. According to SchroederManatee Ranch President and CEO Rex Jensen, his wife, Fran, owner of Knot Awl Beads, already has secured one of the spots on the show. Barring any complications with casting, taping will begin in September at the Music on Main concert in Lakewood Ranch.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Parking meters are coming to Lakewood Ranch. Schroeder-Manatee Ranch President and CEO Rex Jensen last week negotiated with the city of Sarasota to purchase all the assets from its failed downtown parking-meter program. The meters will be removed from Sarasota curbs this week and placed throughout Lakewood Ranch in the next two months, Jensen said. Sarasota paid $510,000 for the 459 meters; SMR purchased them for $300,000. “It was a bargain,” Rex Jensen Jensen said. “These things are practically brand new, and they’re top-of-the-line. They’re a perfect fit for Lakewood Ranch.” Jensen said SMR plans to place the majority of the meters in the busiest areas in the community, including Main Street, Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, San Marco Plaza, Premier Sports

Pat Neal leads new push to incorporate A new Florida statute will make it easier for Lakewood Ranch to incorporate into its own city. LAKEWOOD RANCH — With a background in politics, Lakewood Ranch-based developer Pat Neal is confident he has the skills necessary in helping Lakewood Ranch finally becomes its own city. And after a new Florida statute relaxed the incorporation process easier this year, Neal has become the main voice Pat Neal behind the second effort for cityhood. The Florida Senate passed on March 8 the CS/SB 692 bill, which will go into effect July 1. The bill, titled “Formation of Local Governments,” revised several of the steps required for incorporation, including the deadline for a feasibility study. It also makes it much easier to get the incorporation resolution placed for voter input. And because much of the work completed by the resident-led Incorporation Study Committee is still valid, Neal is confident his resolution for the incorporation of Lake-

Boot purchase complements meter program

In addition to the parking meters, Schroeder-Manatee Ranch also purchased 150 car boots for about $7,500, President and CEO Rex Jensen said. Because Lakewood Ranch does not have its own police department, the boots will serve as the primary way to enforce the meters, he said. If a person’s meter expires, a roving patrol will place a boot on the car. The driver must then pay a $39 fine at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall to have the boot removed, he said. Currently, SMR is painting each of the boots Lakewood Ranch’s signature green. Each boot also will feature the community’s sandhill crane logo. “These are upscale boots,” he said. “They will not be those ugly, yellow ones you see elsewhere in the county.”

Manatee County unveils taxpayer-financed stadium Manatee officials are hopeful their latest public-private partnership will attract an NFL football team to the East County. MANATEE COUNTY — Manatee Parks and Recreation Department officials want this to be a stadium for the people. And that’s exactly how it will be funded. In an unprecedented move, Manatee County commissioners last week approved a financing plan to construct a professional football stadium just east of DeSoto Speedway off State Road 64. The county already has negotiated with the private landowner, and officials say construction will be paid through a $600 million, 30-year

bond issue at 7.35%. Several construction companies have entered bids for the project, which will include 65,000 seats under a retractable roof. “In essence, it’s a smaller version of the new Cowboy Stadium in Dallas,” said Parks and Recreation Department Director Candy Turner said of the design. Cowboy Stadium is regarded as one of the most elaborate and expensive stadiums in the country. Once site plans are approved, county officials estimate con-

struction will take three years. To keep costs down, officials said they likely would not hire locally for the construction. County officials admitted they have not had any discussions with any National Football League team regarding moving to Manatee. “It’s an, ‘If we build it, they will come,’” said Manatee County Commissioner Larry Bustler. “We are confident an NFL team would find our county an attractive option, and we know our residents will respond with their wallets.”

Bustler said Manatee’s demographics compare favorably to Green Bay, Wis., home of the Packers, one of the NFL’s most storied franchises. At 104,057 residents, Green Bay is about one-third the size of Manatee, he said. Given those statistics, commissioners concluded an NFL team would be successful here. Turner said she doesn’t expect Manatee’s close proximity to Tampa and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be a problem.

MANATEE COUNTY — The recent squawking about urban chicken-keeping in Manatee County may get louder as a new pilot program comes to roost in the East County. Manatee commissioners last week approved the county’s Chicken In Every Lot initiative — a pilot program to see whether urban chicken-keeping would be successful. Through the program, every homeowner in University Park, Palm-Aire, Tara and University Place will receive a chicken coop, four chickens and a threemonth supply of feed. Those residents will be asked to care for the chickens daily as well as complete weekly reports for commissioners and program officials to examine. The program is a response to the recent uproar CLUCK (Citizens Lobbying for Urban Chicken Keeping) made following their recent success in Sarasota, which approved its chicken-keeping legislation last year. Manatee officials said they had hoped to include Lakewood Ranch residents in the pilot program but met fierce resistance from Schroeder-Manatee Ranch President and CEO Rex Jensen. “This is just clucked up,” Jensen said. “Chickens belong on farms, in grocery stores, with Colonel Sanders and on the table. Not in the backyard.” District 5 Commissioner Donna Hays said she was disappointed with Jensen’s opposition and hopes he will reconsider once he

Diamonds discovered at SMR Aggregates

An employee at the Lakewood Ranch-based mining operation discovered the unbreakable crystals last week. LAKEWOOD RANCH — SMR officials say it’s better than striking gold. An employee at SMR Aggregates last week discovered natural diamonds at the East County-based mining operation. “I just couldn’t believe it,” said miner Aaron Snyder. “We were down there working on shell, and then some-

thing shiny caught my eye.” Upon further investigation, SMR Aggregates management confirmed the material as natural diamond. SMR Aggregates President Gene Crenshaw said all work at the mines has been halted as he and other mine officials decide how to proceed with the diamonds. The operation likely will implement pipe mining, a

process that uses volcanic pipes to extract the ore. Initial tests of the extracted material will determine whether the company will make major changes to its operation, Crenshaw said. The discovery makes Lakewood Ranch just the fourth location in the United States known to have diamonds. The gemstones also have been found in Arkansas, Colorado and Mon-

tana. Furthermore, the discovery makes Lakewood Ranch the only location in the world in which natural and lab-created diamonds can be found. Lakewood Ranch-based Gemesis has been producing colored gems in its lab since it opened in 2002. Most recently, it has produced flawless, colorless stones, as well.

+ Mud wrestling coming to Premier When Premier Sports Campus opening in Lakewood Ranch, Schroeder-Manatee Ranch officials remarked that it could accommodate any sport that could be played on grass. Turns out, it even is more versatile than that. The crown jewel of East County sports will host its first Lakewood Ranch Bikini Mud Wrestling XXXtravaganza at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 8. The event will feature bracket-style tournament of female mud wrestlers from throughout the Southeast and serve as a qualifier for the national Mud Wrestling Association championships in October. The tournament will take place in a custom mud pit, which will be dug out of the center of Field 1. Before the matches begin, Lakewood Ranch children will be able to hunt for Easter eggs in the pit along with the wrestlers. “We really want to show how mud wrestling can be a family-friendly event,” said Lakewood Ranch Community Activities Association Director

“Mr. Springer loves politics, mudslinging and circuses,” the official said. “This race is the ideal combination of all three.”

+ Jerry Springer enters local race The race for Manatee County supervisor of elections just got hotter. Jerry Springer, who recently closed on a home in The Concession, filed documents last week as a candidate for the seat being vacated by longtime Supervisor of Elections Bob Sweat. A campaign official for Springer said the popular talk-show host and former Cincinnati mayor wants to give back to his hometown and, of course, add some levity to local politics.

The grassroots Occupy Myakka movement was inadvertently — but unceremoniously — disrupted last week. According to Manatee County Sheriff’s Office reports, three protesters handcuffed themselves to an old sofa situated under the blinking light in the middle of town. But a county-contracted Waste Pro Management driver did not see them and hauled the sofa — along with the protesters — away in his trash vehicle. The three later were discovered at Waste Pro’s Bradenton headquarters. They were dazed but unharmed. “They just blended right in,” the visibly shaken driver told the East County Observer. Although all parties involved were Caucasian, Occupy Movement leaders call the incident and act of racism and

School Board OKs creative cuts Following tumultuous budget discussion last month, the Manatee County School Board on Monday approved unanimously several creative cuts at schools district-wide. At elementary schools, all crayons will be broken in half to effectively double the use of each box. District officials say custodial staff has been monitoring the trash and discovered half-used crayons often were discarded. “That’s money going directly into the trash,” said outgoing School Board member Harry Kinnen. The initiative will save an estimated $15,000 per year, leaders said. At middle and high schools, the district will institute mandatory nap-

times from 1 to 2 p.m. daily throughout the campuses. During this time, all lights and air-conditioning will be shut off, saving an estimated $23,000 each school year. District-wide, Manatee also will adopt a no-new-textbook policy. Instead of purchasing textbooks, the district will ask each of its teachers to build curriculum for his or her classroom. The policy is similar to one already in place in Texas public schools. Officials say the cuts — although seemingly small — will yield big savings that will be used to bolster administration and supervisory salaries at the district’s

SMR also will convert about 100 of them into “mobile meters,” which will be placed at popular events taking place in additional locations. “They’ll be labeled as ‘Preferred Parking,’” Jensen said of the mobile meters. “Guests of events such as the Relay for Life, school concerts, Easter egg hunts and church functions will be able to take advantage of opportunities to park a little closer for a small premium.” In Sarasota, the program had a tumultuous history. After they were installed in April 2011, the meters faced fierce opposition from both downtown business owners as well as customers. Merchants said the meters impacted their businesses by discouraging potential customers from shopping downtown. In July, the city commission voted to bag the parking meters until Oct. 1. The city reopened the program for the holiday season but ultimately discontinued the program March 5. Commissioner Shannon Snyder said he changed his mind and voted to kill the parking meter program. “I’m not in favor of the parking meter program any longer,” Snyder said. “We tried it, and it didn’t work.” Despite its failure in Sarasota, Jensen said he is confident the program won’t experience a similar fate in Lakewood Ranch. “Businesses here know it is a privilege to work in Lakewood Ranch — and so do shoppers,” he said. “Actually, I believe the meters will attract more customers. There’s a premium to pay to have the best, and that is what we have here. “We are confident that the meters actually will increase business for our merchants,” he said. “People will be more LBK - 2010 - I inclined to make purchases if they know they’ve LBK -already 2010 -put I out one or two bucks for shopping. They were crafted carefully in hopes of ruffling your feathers just a bit. They all are part of the East County Observer’s annual April Fools’ spoof edition. No, Sarasota’s parking meters aren’t coming to Lakewood Ranch (at least, not yet!). Pat Neal isn’t spearheading a second incorporation

‘Tour de Cure’ raises diabetes awareness The Tour de Cure event, to be held April 1, on Lakewood Ranch Main Street, will raise money for the American Diabetes Association. LAKEWOOD RANCH — With family members who are fighting diabetes and as a former diabetic herself, Mary Ellen Fortier has over the last 20 years become familiar with the affects of diabetes. But one new statistic made even Fortier gasp. “More people die today from diabetes complications than breast cancer and AIDS combined,” Fortier said. “It has become a growing epidemic in the United States, and most experts believe it goes hand-in-hand with the growing epidemic of obesity in this country.” So this weekend, Fortier, who is controlling her disease through diet and exercise, will gear up this weekend to raise awareness of the disease and raise funds for finding a cure, as the American Diabetes Association hosts its annual Tour de Cure event held April 1, on Lakewood Ranch Main Street.

With Type 2 diabetes, which usually starts later in life, the pancreas still works, but the body is resistant to the insulin or is unable to use it, causing blood sugar spikes and other problems. East County to offer EASTER EVENTS plenty of Easter fun Bayside Community Church Eggolution Easter Egg Hunt

MANATEE COUNTY — For the past three months, thousands of brightly colored Easter eggs have been piling up inside the walls of Bayside Community Church — some 40,000 to be exact. And in a matter of days, those Easter eggs will be divided up and transported to the Lakewood Ranch High baseball fields and Bradenton Christian School for the church’s annual Eggolution Easter Egg Hunt. The event, which is one of the largest Easter egg hunt’s in Manatee County, will be held simultaneously from 10 a.m. to noon March 31, at both locations. In addition to the massive hunt, children of all ages will enjoy inflatable games and bounce castles, a rock-climbing wall and a visit from the Easter Bunny, among other activities. “It’s an event the whole community is invited to, and it’s all free,” Bayside Missions and Outreach Pastor Guy Breading said. “I enjoy seeing all of the families coming out and having fun together. I hope the children take

+ Bicyclist injured in East County collision A 66-year-old woman is in critical condition after an oncoming vehicle collided with her bicycle in the River Club community March 14. A Florida Highway Patrol report states Judy Holt, 70, was driving her 2000 Chevrolet van eastbound on Braden Run and the intersection of Glen Abbey Lane when she failed to observe bicyclist Nancy Janus, 66. The front right of Holt’s vehicle collided with the bicycle’s rear, and the bicycle came to a final rest on the south shoulder of Braden Run, the report states. Janus was transported to Blake Hospital. Holt sustained no injuries.

Charities receiving funds raised at the festival will be honored at a special luncheon April 5, at The Polo Grill and Bar. “Thirty local and international charities this year alone will benefit from our member-driven fundraising efforts led by the Wine Fest, which, this year, attracted more than 1,800 visitors,” the club’s President John Freeman said. + ADA changed animal requirements

Dear Editor: Neither a snake nor a goat qualify as service animals under the current ADA requirements. The ADA requirements for what counts as a service animal were changed more than a year ago. Service animals are now almost all dogs — a few miniature guide horses are grandfathered in. But that is it. And, a service dog must mitigate the handler’s disability, as described under ADA. + No one should shop alongside a snake Dear Editor: Regarding the service snake at Walmart — please reassure poor Trish Chandler that she does not need to resort to taking a goat to Walmart. Jim Jackson, the Walmart manager, is dead wrong. And no one should have to shop alongside a snake. In March 2011, the ADA laws regarding service animals were changed, and only dogs are recognized as service animals, with some exceptions for miniature horses.

Having gotten in trouble over their repeated violations of the ADA laws regarding service dogs, Walmart’s managers should know better. I thought that they were required to have training as part of the settlement of a class-action suit against Walmart. And even if not, it is pretty easy to find out the laws. + Reader questions service animal laws Dear Editor: I can hardy believe that (State Road 64 Walmart Store Manager) Jim Jackson would be such a wimp. Come on, a snake a service pet? I, too, was in the same Walmart, and there was a cute, little Yorkie dog sitting in the child seat of the shopping cart. This took place in the produce department, and I asked a clerk about the dog in the store. She gave me the same story Trish

(Chandler) got. That dog was no more a service dog than the goat Trish may borrow from a neighbor to take into the store. This was a spoiled pet, whose anus was on the seat where toddlers, purses, drinks and sometimes, food, sit. Where’s Walmart’s heads? Where’s the health department? Where are these animals’ owners’ heads? Horses are also service animals — maybe someone should ride one in to do their shopping. I would like to see health departments require that a service animal be certified as such and have a tag that must be worn when in service and that cost of the certification and tag be at the owner’s expense (and a fine if an animal is brought in to a place food is being sold). I don’t want anyone to think I don’t love pets. Over the years, I have had dogs, cats, ferrets and several horses. + School district budget needs overhaul Dear Editor: I would like to thank you for the editorial written by Michael Eng. I’m for good schools, good teachers and a working school board for the whole community, but that’s not what this community is getting. After reading the school budget, you will find many errors and omissions. It has taken a retired IRS enrollment agent more than two years to find some of the major problems with the budgets. With the taxpayer paying 50% of their taxes to school, you would think the Manatee district would be ranking higher than 47th out of 67 school districts in Florida. Each of Peridia’s homeowners this week will receive a special resident-made booklet full of the community’s history. “We’ve done an awful lot in 25 years,” said resident Dave Hauck, who researched the community’s history in preparation for the 25th anniversary celebration.

Like a family

Peridia development began in 1985, with the first lots sold and constructed upon in 1987. The golf course opened with two public tournaments June 13, 1987. The country club opened later that month, as well.

TIMELINE 1985 — Southern Lakes Venture formed to develop the land now known as Peridia. Infrastructure improvements began, with the creation of lakes as part of the stormwater management system, the installation of underground utilities and the development of the golf course and roads. 1986 — Peridia incorporated (Aug. 15). Developer representative Mike Sullivan was appointed Peridia’s first president of the Master Board of Directors (August). Ray Bartels, Sr., was hired as the first golf course superintendent (September). 1987 — First lots sold (March). Construction of pro shop and other buildings began (June). Golf course held its grand opening (June 13).

“If you look back 23 years ago (when I moved here), very little was here,” Hauck said. “It was a bit of a gamble (to buy here). Most of the roads weren’t in. Peridia Boulevard ended.” But Hauck and his wife, Susan, liked the location and their home’s proposed floor plan. They also had confidence in developer Arthur Rutenberg Homes, Hauck said. “We saw the clubhouse built from the ground up,” Hauck said. “Once that happened, houses (really started selling fast). It was great to see it.” When residents took control of the Peridia Property Owners

Association, the entity responsible for maintaining the community’s common areas, pool and clubhouse, in 1993, resident board members negotiated with the developer so the new board inherited no debt. Hauck served as the new board’s first president. The community’s unofficial slogan was “No slobs, no snobs.” “When my husband and I came here and we drove down the streets, everyone was waving and smiling,” Dender said. “It was a very close-knit area, and it’s stayed that way. It’s a family.” Although Mary Williams has only lived in Peridia for about one year, she already has experienced that feeling of closeness. “It was a wonderful community when it started, and it’s still a wonderful community,” Williams said. “I think that says a lot.” Dave Hauck agreed, joking it takes him three hours to mow his

yard because so many neighbors stop by to catch up. “It never gets old,” he said. Williams agreed. “It’s just a great place to live,”

Rain? Who cares? We have a game to play It’s the one title nearly every athlete across the board longs to add to his or her résumé. It garners more glitz and glamour than just about any other competitive title, and it elevates those who are lucky enough to have received the coveted crown to an elite status. So with all of the hype and accolades surrounding it, it’s easy to see why, when I ask just about every one of JEN my athletes BLANCO what his or her goals are for the season, winning a state championship is is by far the common response. Of course, although every athlete dreams of winning a state title, the odds of it routinely happening aren’t good. But that doesn’t keep them from striving to run faster, kick the ball farther or play harder. After all, when a state championship is on the line, everything else takes a back seat, including injuries or unfavorable conditions. Such was the case this past Sunday, when I looked out my window to see the monsoon that had unleashed itself from the sky. My first thought was, ‘Seriously? You’re kidding me, right?’ You can imagine my enthusiasm at the thought of going out to cover the Florida Youth Soccer Association State Cup in the pouring rain. Oh yes, soccer players — they play in the rain. But even this

RIVER CLUB — Wendi Golden spent much of her childhood playing in a boys’ world. Following in the footsteps of her family members, the River Club resident started playing golf when she was 5 years old. Three years later, Golden began playing Atlanta Junior Golf Association tournaments. At the time, Golden was the only girl playing on the tour, forcing her to compete in the

boys division until she was at least 11 years old. The experience proved beneficial for the aspiring junior golfer, who learned the value of stiff competition. “It made me a tougher competitor, because I wasn’t intimidated by boys or girls,” Golden said. “It’s kind of (different) being a female in a guys’ world. I had to learn to adjust. It gave me an appreciation

for the level in which I got to compete.” Now years later, Golden is hoping to instill some of knowledge she gained from her time playing with the AJGA to local junior golfers as the Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association’s new executive director. Golden, who replaces 16-year veteran executive director Judy Christman, assumed her new po-

sition at the end of February. “I have such fond memories growing up that I feel like this is kind of an opportunity to pour back into the lives of junior golfers like people did for me,” Golden said. “I think it’s a good opportunity in that sense. I’ve covered so many different angles in golf, and it’s a new challenge.” Golden first learned about the open position from a friend in early December, but she was not interested at the time. Her friend

COOL AS ICE The Out-of-Door Academy eighth-grader Vito Bavaro recently received a scholarship to play hockey for Brooks School in North Andover, Mass.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — While the outside world remains covered in calm darkness, a glowing light filters beneath the doors of the New Jersey hockey rink. The doors slowly begin to open, and within a matter of seconds, the sounds of pucks flying and blades slashing across the ice break the silence. It’s well before 6 a.m. and the sun has yet to creep up over the horizon. But that doesn’t stop a young Vito Bavaro and his friends from racing across the ice. Bavaro, who was 4 years old at the time, started playing hockey because all of his friends were playing the sport. But now 10 years later, what began as a chance to play alongside his friends has turned into a lifelong passion. And on March 12, The Out-ofDoor Academy student took the next step in his hockey career after accepting a scholarship to play hockey for Brooks School in North Andover, Mass. “I was excited,” Bavaro said. “This is something I’ve wanted my entire life, and for it to come true was really exciting.” Bavaro applied to two schools; and after nearly a year, he learned he had been accepted by his first choice. “They gave me everything I asked for, so I couldn’t really turn them down,” Bavaro said. “To get to the next step in my hockey career, this was the next step. “I really liked the coach, and I just felt comfortable there,” he said. “The kids were all really friendly, and I really liked the environment.” Over the years, Bavaro, who Vito Bavaro said his move to Massachusetts is the next step in his budding hockey career.

Golden considered it more, and by the time her friend approached her for the third time, Golden was ready for the challenge. “The more I looked into the opportunity, the more it just seemed perfect,” Golden said. “I applied and I thought, ‘If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, and if not, we’ll work with what we’ve got.’ I feel very fortunate and blessed that I was selected as the recipient of the position.” As the new executive director, Golden, who spent six seasons coaching junior and high school golf, will be responsible for conducting the GSJGA tournaments. The association is now finishing its winter tournament schedule, which includes one tournament per month. “I enjoy seeing the improvement and how excited they get when their hard work pays off,” Golden said. “When you

Lakewood Ranch High School drama students will present “Anything Goes” this weekend in the high school auditorium. The Mustang Players produced the musical 10 years ago and are revisiting the Cole Porter classic — this time with Ranch alum Katy Kowles, daughter of drama department head Roxane Caravan, serving as choreographer. “Between the cast, crew and orchestra, we probably have about 50 students involved,”

Caravan says. “We did two full musicals this year, and this one is the more traditional musical theater show. “We wanted to do a good tap show,” she says. “And we want to keep the old stuff alive.” Performances of “Anything Goes” will be at 7:30 p.m. March 29 to 31, with a matinee at 2 p.m. March 31. Willy Wonka musical sweetens ODA Students at The Out-of-Door Academy brought the story of Willy Wonka, Charilie and the Oompaloompas to life with performances of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” March 21 to 24, in the school’s Black Box Theatre. The musical featured live music, choreography and plenty of fun.

Percussion group scrubs cars for cash Musicians in the Manatee County Independent percussion group used their hands not only to perform on their instruments but also to clean East County cars during the group’s car wash fundraiser March 24, at Crowder Bros. Ace Hardware in Lakewood Ranch.

The car wash was a fundraiser for the group’s upcoming trip to the 2012 Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit State Finals this weekend in Daytona. MCI includes students from Lakewood Ranch and Braden River high schools as well as from throughout the county.

MD Anderson fundraiser trots into Lakewood Ranch Supporters of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center enjoyed a day of fun and fundraising during the annual Polo Under the Palms event March 24. The day began with the Making Cancer History Seminar at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota. Attendees then headed to the Sarasota Polo Club for an afternoon of action followed by an evening of dinner, music and dancing under the stars. Jamie Uihlein co-chaired the event along with his wife, Mary, son, James, and daughterin-law, Christie. “Our first Polo Under the Palms was an outstanding success, and we’re so proud to be a part of such an exciting and meaningful event,” James Uihlein says. “Thanks to the generosity of more than 300 attendees, we raised more than $150,000 last year to support MD Anderson and its message of hope for cancer patients and their families.”


