Nissan Silvia S 15: Things to know about this drifter’s delight!

Nissan Silvia is one of the top sports coupes manufactured by one of Japan’s top automakers – Nissan! When the car was first introduced in the JDM, the Japanese loved it! It’s with this success in the local market did Nissan decide to take the rest of the world.

In 1999 the Nissan Silvia S 15 was launched in Japan. It is the 7th generation of it’s line and it has enjoyed success within the local market and overseas. The Silvia S 15 saw some major exterior changes with a more modern car design being introduced. This generation of the car was first sold in Japan, New Zealand and Australia only. It was marketed as the Nissan 200SX in those two countries. The car was available as a grey import to rest of the world. The Silvia S 15 was the last of Nissan’s S series and in 2002, all productions of the platform ended.

The S15 boasted of an impressive 245bhp 6,400rpm with 203-ft/lb torque, with this kind of performance power and stunning exterior – it was one of the most sought after sports cars even to date. Back in the day Nissan enjoyed tremendous sales boost due to this beauty.

Here are some common questions answered about the Nissan Silvia!

What is the difference between the Spec S and Spec R?
Just like its successors the S 15 also has different options and the Spec S and Spec R are the two main models. The Spec – R was generally the most sought after model of the two since it came a with a turbocharged engine. Apart from the engine the Spec R also has major strength in suspension and chassis.

Is the Nissan Varietta a part of the S15?
The short answer is yes! The Varietta is another S15 model, which is a convertible style design. This is quite a unique model since it’s the only S15 to offer an electric folding retractable hardtop. Only a little over thousand Varietta models were produced so they are not so commonly seen in the world. Howver if you are keen to get your hands on one, then try a Japanese auction house.

Silvia S 15 in Motorsport
What’s a sport scar if it doesn’t sparkle on the racetrack! The S15 is known for its drifting capabilities and it rose to fame in the Formula Drift series. Tope races such as James Deane and Forrest Wang opted for the S15 in for their time on the racetrack.

The S15 is undoubtedly one of the best looking cars out there even today. It has a great power plant and it’s great handling capability along with the lightweight chassis makes it a dream come true for many. The S15 can be used for daily driving and is ideal if you are alone or as a couple since the rear leg space is insanely small. It’ll be the coolest car as a second vehicle if you could afford one!
