The history of Verona Villafranca Airport, one of the oldest ports in Italy

Villafranca Air Base was a military airport during the First World War. The port was opened to civilian traffic in the early 1910s, with daily scheduled connections to Rome and charter flights to destinations in northern Europe.

In the late 1970s a passenger terminal, offices and handling facilities were built at Villafranca Airport as part of the first community project realised by the Province of Verona, the Commune of Verona and the local Chamber of Commerce. The management community Aeroporto Valerio Catullo di Verona Villafranca S.P.A. was established in December 1978. The ownership is currently shared between the provincial governments of Veneto (Villafranca di Verona and Sommacampagna), Lombardy (Province of Brescia), Trentino (second main shareholder) and Alto Adige/Südtirol.

In 1990, the passenger terminal was expanded to cope with the ever-increasing air traffic and access to the airport was improved with a road connection to Verona’s new ring road (SS12) in preparation for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

In 1995 the airport reached the record of handling one million passengers per year. In 1999, the airport was ranked second in Italy in the ‘Special Classification of Charter Traffic’, after Milan Malpensa Airport and Rome Fiumicino Airport.

During the Bosnian War, the airport was used as a staging area by NATO aircraft. In May 2006, the new arrivals terminal Terminal 2 was inaugurated by Cesare De Piccoli, Deputy Minister of Transport, and Luca Zaia, Vice President of the Veneto Region. This additional terminal is located right next to the original building, now known as Terminal 1. As a result of the expansion programme, the airport’s capacity has doubled. Terminal 1 is therefore only used for departures and Terminal 2 for arrivals.

Air traffic continued to increase in the 2010s, with 3,385,794 passengers travelling through the airport in 2011.

In 2015, Ryanair resumed service to the airport with scheduled flights to Palermo, London Stansted and Brussels. Many airlines converted charter routes into regular services during the 2015-16 winter season: Finnair flies between Verona and Helsinki, AirBaltic between Verona and Riga. However, flights between Paris and Verona operated by Air France were cancelled at the end of October 2015 and replaced by flights operated by its low-cost subsidiary Transavia.
