Kenneth Kaunda International Airport is an international airport located in Chongwe District on Great East Road, approximately 27 kilometres northeast of Lusaka city centre, the capital and largest city of Zambia.
The airport has a capacity of 6 million and is the largest airport in Zambia. The airport serves as a hub for Zambia Airways, Proflight Zambia, Royal Zambia Airlines and Mahogany Air.
The airport was opened in 1967 as Lusaka International Airport. In 2011, it was renamed in honour of the country’s first President Kenneth Kaunda. The airport serves Domestic, Regional and International flights in accordance with the standards and recommended practices (SARPS) developed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. The port hosts more private jet charter than any other port in the country.

History of Lusaka Airport
Opened in 1967, Kenneth Kaunda International Airport was used for domestic flights in the first years.
In 2015, the airport embarked on an expansion project with a budget of $360 million, provided by government funds and a loan from the EXIM Bank of China. In addition, the design of the new terminal was carried out by China Airports Corporation, while the executive contractor was China Jiangsu. The new terminal was officially opened on 5 August 2021.

Transportation from Kenneth Kaunda Airport to the city centre
There are no alternatives other than taxi and car rental to reach the city centre from the port. In the country where the public transport network is not established, taxis that can be used to reach the centre are waiting at the airport exit 24/7. Comfortable taxis reach the centre in about 30-40 minutes. Although taximeters are not used in taxis, the fares are the same for each taxi.
There are only two car rental companies (Avis and Europcar) in the port, so it is necessary to reserve a car before your flights to the country. Passengers who want to reach the city centre by rental car or their own vehicle can reach Lusaka city centre in maximum 35 minutes via Great E/T4 road.
