The Buganda Kingdom Prime minister (Katikiro), Owekitibwa Charles Peter Mayiga has on Thursday officially launched the 2017 Buganda Royal Canoe Regatta organizing committee.

The well attended launch took place at the Bulange – Mengo main conference hall.

The eloquent leader has appreciated the committee for the efforts intended to make this year’s championship a complete success.

Reflecting back to the early Kingdom days dating as far back as the last 800 years ago for the epoch of the first muganda, Kintu.

We now have the expertise; machinery and good foundation.

This is a historical event for Buganda Kingdom. Kabaka Kintu once used the navy force during his days.

Back then, the sport was vibrant.

Upon this back ground, the regatta is back not only to identify talented canoe riders and promote winning, but also to preserve cultural norms from our grand fathers

He hinted about the value of sports in re-positioning and rebuilding the Buganda Kingdom to its vibrant state of old.

Sports Club Villa Jogoo President Eng. Ben Misagga is the chairperson of the Buganda canoe Regatta organizing committee.

Hilda Bhati, a motivational speaker is the committee Vice Chairperson

Omutaka Mukeddi Nsubuga (Treasurer), Deo Lukyamuzi (secretary), Henry Kasajja (head of media) and Solomon Muwonge, president Nalubaale Rowing Club the in charge of Technical affairs.

The members on the committee are; Hajji Abas Tebandekke, Hajji Ssemanobe Musoke, Adam Ssematiko, Lubega Matovu and Kikomeko.

Committee chairperson, Misagga lauded the Kingdom for entrusting him with the powers and responsibility of running such a historical event.

He promised to serve to the best of his ability and restore the sporting pride for the kingdom.

I will work alongside my committee to serve to our best.

We are targeting to better last season.

The launch was also attended by Henry Ssekabembe Kiberu, the Kingdom sports minister, Masaza chiefs, kingdom officials, team managers and riders as well as members of the media.

The Buganda Kingdom Canoe Regatta competition will be challenged amongst the kingdom Masaza’s (counties).

This year’s championship is slated to take place on the 4th February 2017 at Speke Resort, Munyonyo, off Lake Victoria.

The Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Mutebi II shall attend the Royal Regatta.

Bugerere Ssaza is defending champion.
