About

Spongebob Sees Flying Dutchman is a two paneled object-labeling image macro derived from a Spongebob Squarepants episode in which Spongebob emotes that he is no longer scared of the Flying Dutchman. In April 2016, Redditors began using the image to express that a situation which should be dramatic is unimpressive to certain people.

Origin

On May 5th, 2006, the Spongebob Squarepants episode "Ghost Host" premiered in the United States.[3] In the episode, Spongebob is unimpressed when he is confronted by the Flying Dutchman, who attempts to scare him by shapeshifting into various monsters (shown below).

Spread

On April 25th, 2019, Redditor ReekyPhatBomb uploaded a two paneled version of the scene which labels the Flying Dutchman as "endgame spoilers" and Spongebob as "people who don't care about the movie" to r/Me_IRL[2] (shown below, left). The post gained over 6,900 points (92% upvoted) in three months. On May 14th, Redditor SlothySurprise used the same template in a post to r/MemeEconomy[1] (shown below, right).
