Brazil’s First Gay Publications

In the post-WWII era, Brazil witnessed a substantial expansion in gay culture, particularly in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Indicative of such expansion was the development of several gay publications, the first of which being O Snob (The Snob), a newsletter composed by the members of a turma of Northeasterners in Rio. Between 1963 and 1969, the turma published one-hundred issues of the gay newsletter, which usually featured gossip columns, interviews with drag stars, and elaborate illustrations.
