Abstract
The Permian petrified forests of the Parnaíba Basin represent an important part of the Brazilian Palaeobotany heritage. The stems show excellent preservation and have a high scientific, educative, and touristic potential. These forests, especially in the central part of the basin (Poti River Petrified Forest, Petrified Forest of the Garapenses Hills, Altos Petrified Forest, and other occurrences), have gymnosperm woods as their main component, which constitute a rare record of life position stems, that is, autochthonous stems. On the other hand, on the southwest border (Tocantins Fossil Trees Natural Monument) there is a predominance of pteridophytes, with no presence of autochthonous elements. The majority of these sites are located within conservation units; however, they are seriously threatened by several factors, especially anthropogenic ones. Actions to increase the adequate protection of these sites by the public agencies are still scarce. The current conservation state of this fossil heritage sites shows that there is a long path toward the development of geoconservation strategies to be implemented in these forests to promote their preservation. The systematization of these strategies is a fundamental and a necessary stage for the recognition of the importance of these fossils by society and, consequently, for their preservation for future generations.
